LOGINMy roommate Lilith is still passed out. She got in pretty late last night, so it works out that she doesn't have class this morning. She swears she's a heavy sleeper, but I still tiptoe around getting ready anyway.
"First day of college, Nana. Wish me luck," I murmur, brushing my fingers over a framed photo of my Nana sitting on my study table. Her warm brown eyes stare back at me. I wonder sometimes if she's proud of me now. "I'll study hard...but not too hard. These human guys won't know what hit them," I promise her. "Love you, Winston. Try not to miss me too much today." I give my teddy bear's head a little pat. Lilith's got a huge mirror mounted near the door, so I take a second to check myself out before heading off. "Oh, hello there," I say to my reflection. "Hey, sexy beast." I make finger guns at myself and wink. Yeah, it's ridiculous, and I don't actually think I look sexy, but Nana always said if you tell yourself you look good enough times, eventually you believe it. I like feeling good about myself, so sometimes I hype myself up as a sexy beast. Mostly just in my own head. A laugh erupts from the bed beside mine. "That's it, I can't keep quiet anymore. What on earth are you doing up this early, Freya Hayes?" Lilith asks, her head popping out from under her blanket. Mortified that she caught my whole finger-gun routine, I plant my hands on my hips instead and shoot back, "Hey! I thought you said you were a heavy sleeper. Were you eavesdropping this whole time?" She cracks up again. "How could I not? You're hilarious...and a little unhinged. Do you always narrate your life like that?" Unhinged? This girl has no idea what she's talking about. I'm the picture of normal. Actually, scratch that, I'm beyond normal. I toss my hair dramatically. "Pfft, but you love me anyway. See you later, bitch," I tell her. "Yeah, later, skank," she calls back, laughing. Having a friend like Lilith feels amazing. We click easily and joke around like we've been friends forever. She's definitely going to help keep my swear jar in business. Grabbing my bag, I step out of our shared room and nearly walk straight into Caleb, who's just standing there in front of the door like he's been waiting for me this whole time. "Oh, hey, Caleb." I flash him a smile. "Morning!" He just stares at me for a beat, like my cheerfulness caught him off guard. "Here," he mutters, shoving a rectangular object at me, wrapped messily in colorful paper. "What is it?" My hand's already reaching for it before I even finish asking. "Is it food?" Please let it be food. He looks like he wants to roll his eyes but manages not to. Sorry that my stomach runs the show most of the time. Okay, all of the time. "Corbin mentioned it's your birthday today. So...happy birthday," he says, looking painfully awkward about it. Oh my god, I completely forgot my own birthday! Guess I've had way too much on my plate lately to even remember it. I'm eighteen now. Supposedly that's the magic age where a werewolf's instincts kick in and they start sensing their mate. Not that it applies to me. No mate here. A thought hits me suddenly: if old Mr. Thorne, the former alpha, wanted to formally claim me, today would've been the day. I shiver at the idea. Thank god I got out when I did. Staring down at the sloppily wrapped gift, I picture Caleb wrestling with tape trying to make it look presentable. It's honestly hilarious, but also incredibly sweet. I can't help the huge grin spreading across my face. I throw my arms around him and squeal, "Thank you! Thank you so much, Caleb! You're the sweetest!!!" His whole body goes rigid and his voice comes out strangled. "You don't even know what it is yet." I ease up on the hug and glance at him. He's back to scowling, though somehow it doesn't come across scary at all. "And I'm not sweet," he adds gruffly. Honestly, it doesn't matter what's inside the wrapping. The only people who've ever bothered getting me anything or wishing me happy birthday have been my Nana and Corbin...and now Caleb too. I'm pretty lucky, all things considered. This marks my very first birthday without Nana. Tears sting the back of my eyes without warning, my throat tightening painfully. My smile falters. I blink hard, shove the thought away, and force my smile back into place. "True, I don't know what it is, but I'm betting it's amazing!" I rip into the wrapping paper eagerly, then freeze in surprise staring at the book in my hands. Skulduggery Pleasant, Midnight, the newest release in the series by Derek Landy. I don't even need to ask how he figured out I wanted this. Corbin must've mentioned it to him. I've been obsessed with Skulduggery Pleasant since middle school. Never could afford my own copies, so I always borrowed them from the school library instead. Corbin was never really into reading, but somehow I got him hooked on this series too. He knew I'd been dying for this particular book to finally release. Carefully, I open it and run my fingers reverently across the printed pages. Then I lift it close to my face and inhale deeply. God, that smell, crisp paper, that unmistakable scent of a book cracked open for the very first time. Nobody's touched these pages before. Just me. "Thank you, Caleb," I say, pulling him into another hug. I know he's not big on hugging, but I honestly don't care. He claims he's not sweet, but he totally is. This time he stays quiet, just clears his throat and pats my head somewhat awkwardly. "Now put this on," he says brusquely, the second I release him. A weird, sickly-sweet, overpowering smell hits me as he yanks a thick black material out of a plastic bag"So, Freya Hayes..." he murmurs, like he's tasting the sound of it. The way my name slides off his tongue sends a shiver straight down my spine. I'd just finished signing the attendance sheet as it circulated, and apparently he's only now piecing together my full name. "Freya..." he repeats under his breath, then lets out a low chuckle. "The fvcking irony," he says. "Perfect." Excuse me? What is that supposed to mean? God, the man is exhausting! Is he mocking my name now? Because if so, I will happily gouge his eyes out with this pen. I mean it. I spin around and shoot him a look meant to promise violence, holding my pen up in a stabbing motion for emphasis. He laughs quietly, clearly delighted by my reaction. "Easy with the threats, sweetheart," he whispers, pitched just loud enough for me and every nosy student nearby to catch. "You're putting ideas in my head. Getting me worked up. Giving me all sorts of thoughts..." Oh my god. A strangled little sound, half squeak half whimpe
Freya's POVNobody's home when I get back, same as always. After showering, I throw on pajama pants and a tank top, then scrutinize myself in the mirror. There's zero chance anyone in this house misses that massive hickey on my neck. I'd been careful hiding it under my hair all day, but even Harper caught it. We were sipping smoothies at the cafe after my interview with Owen, the manager, when Harper cracked up and said, "Oh, boy, poor Nolan, he never stood a chance, huh?" Her eyes kept drifting to the bruise the entire time. Nolan had looked anywhere but at me, pretending he hadn't noticed or heard a word Harper said. It's impossible to miss, honestly. Caleb definitely won't be thrilled. He's ridiculously overprotective lately. I'm technically an adult, yet my cousin still treats me like some twelve-year-old.I refuse to hole up in my room avoiding everyone until this thing fades. I did enough hiding back at Night Shade Pack, and I despised every second of it.Ugh, fine, decision mad
I glance over my shoulder to watch her stomp away like a queen-child. She is fuming. Her hips sway as she walks away. It's not done intentionally or in an exaggerated way like some girls do either. That's just the way she walks and it's as sexy as fvck and I can't take my eyes off of her, damn it! I can't help the grin from forming on my face. I never had to work to get a girl before. This would be interesting. I live for challenges but I'll be damned if I have to wait for years, like the way Caspian waited for Livana before I claim my erasthai. I watch her disappear from view before I push myself off the wall to stalk back to where I left my bag. I weave through girls standing in front of my bag and books. "Julian, we can continue with our project in my room, if you want. We won't get interrupted there," says my project partner, Serena. "No, I have a class in ten minutes," I tell her as I sling my backpack over my shoulder. "What about later? I'm free the whole day." "I'm
Julian's POV The air crackles with electricity between us. The pull is intense. I fight for control but now, my vision is tinged red. My animal side is taking over. The thought of her with some other guy, even just for a simple lunch drives me crazy. Her hiding my mark on her, even a temporary one, just snaps off my control and my lycan takes over. I inhale her incredible, magical scent deeply to calm the beast in me. "Tell me you're not seeing anybody. Tell me there's no other man." She's mine. I can hear the thunderous drum of her heartbeat, the heated blood that rushes through her body, the ragged breathing that matches my own but she remains silent. It doesn't matter. She belongs to me. If there's another man staking a claim on her, I will crush him. I will destroy anything that comes between me and her. The graceful curve of her neck looks so tempting as I run my nose close to it and breathe in her scent deeply one more time. Her scent manages to calm me and excite me at
"I'm not going to tell you my name and I'm not going to show you anything that's mine." "Well...that's too bad, Princess," he says. "I want to see everything that's yours and it's hard to get to know each other if you won't tell me your name. It's going to take a while for us start making out, huh?" What the hell? I stop in my track and turn to look at him. He has that annoying smile that says he knows something that I don't. So very annoying. "Listen here bud, we're not ever going to be making out," I tell him. "Okay. Tomorrow then?" he says with that sexy stupid cocky grin. Ughh!!! I start walking again but I have this urge to stomp my feet like a five-year-old throwing a tantrum. "So....not tomorrow either? Is the next day okay?" I stop again and glare at him. Is he doing this just to annoy me? He bursts out laughing. I have to admit, the sound of his laughter almost makes me melt into a puddle at his feet. It's beautiful. Low and manly yet full of tempting naughtines
Werewolves generally have variants earthy smell of the forest. Living among them all my life makes me familiar with their scent. I can spot even the faintest of their scents anywhere. Even Nana had her own unique scent of the wild. The beautiful stranger whose hands are currently gripping my hips and whose lips and nose are firmly buried in my neck has a different kind of scent. It's definitely wild and it's something I'm not familiar with, mixed with the smell of an expensive cologne. He smells rich...and oh, so very good. Like catnip to cats, like crack cocaine to an addict, I can't resist burying my face into his soft silky golden hair, taking a long deep drag of his addictive scent into my starved, deprived lungs. The feel of his lips on my neck is sending bursts of electrical current to every cell and nerve ending in my body. I place my hands on his broad solid shoulders and succumb to the urge to plaster the front of my body to his until there is no part of the front of our bo
