[Region of Avarice, Demon Continent]

The body of a woman hit the floor with a dull thud and did not rise. She was bruised from throat to ankle, her hair spread across the black stone, and only the faint lift of her ribs said that she was still alive.

“Oh no.” The man who had dropped her stood over her, shirtless and barefoot, his dark gray hair damp against his forehead. He tilted his head and regarded her as one would a toy that had stopped working. “This one broke too.”

[Obsidian Castle, Frostveil.]Adrian stayed on the bench long after the sound of Daeron’s paws had faded from the path. The cracks his friend had left in the flagstones crept across the floor in a pale, branching web. He would have to send for a mason later. Daeron started doing this after he shattered half of his mansion... Accidentally. Beyond the fence, the blue leaves shivered in the wind, and down in the settlement the celebrating had not stopped.'Since they cannot hurt you, they will hurt the ones closest to you.'He regretted it.He regretted the choice, and he did not enjoy how easily the admission sat in his chest. Yet it had needed doing. Hayden and Leticia would have hounded him for another hundred years, and when the chance came to end it, he had reached for the one woman in the world whose death he could bear. It had seemed sound at the time. Any enemy who wanted to hurt him would go for whoever stood closest, and Estella stood closest on paper alone. If they cut her do

[Silvervale, The Great Hall]Nineteen figures sat around a wooden table inlaid with veins of gold, and none of them spoke. At its center stood a gilded chalice burning with blue fire, its flames giving more shadow than light. Beyond that small circle, the Great Hall climbed into blackness, its silver-veined pillars rising until the ceiling was lost to the shadows.Twenty-one seats stood around the table, ten at each side and one at its head. Two of those seats, however, were empty. At the head sat a man with gray hair and gray eyes, and his gaze held a stern glint that would not pardon a single mistake. He was Jorad Montharne, lord of Silvervale and father of Estella. Two places to his right, beside an empty chair, a man with dark brown hair and hypnotic green eyes rested a small smile on his lips. He was handsome in a polished way, with a sharp jawline and neatly styled hair, and he had the air of a refined scholar who would never hurt a fly. This was Darius Hale, who had once been E

All women are useless.”The wind that came through the open window smelled of smoke and perfume, and somewhere far below, a drunken song rose and broke apart. Under a low violet sky, the streets of Avarice glowed with lamplight, and women moved through it with horns curling from their heads and thin, whip-like tails swaying at their heels. Demons, mostly succubi.

The door closed behind Adrian, and what little expression he had worn in that chamber drained from his face. Something was amiss. He knew it before he saw it, for the noise had already reached him through the stone, a restless swell climbing the castle walls, it sounded far too merry for an ordinary day.He walked down the corridor to the nearest window and looked out.Beyond the great fenced grounds, the settlement of Frostveil had spilled into its streets. Werewolves stood in scattered patterns, shouting words at each other. Even those at work were all clamouring. The glass dulled the noise, but not enough. Adrian’s ears sorted the voices for him whether he wished it or not.“...Tethered, the Alpha, can you imagine...”“...they say she is a beauty...”“...I heard she is tall...”He pinched the bridge of his nose, then dragged a hand back through his silver hair until the strands fell loose and unkempt across his fingers.“Fuck.” he cursed. “I ought to have foreseen this.”His grandp

  • Frost and Ember    Chapter 16: Frostveil's council

[The Grand Conclave, Frostveil.] The council chamber sat deep within the most ancient hall of Frostveil Castle, windowless save for a single narrow slit near the ceiling, through which a blade of gray daylight cut across the obsidian table and little else. Torches lined the walls in its stead, casting most of the chamber in restless amber shadow. Within that half-light sat a dozen of Frostveil’s eldest bloodlines, elders and wolves of high rank who had governed its affairs for decades, if not centuries. “At last.” An old man broke the silence, his voice worn thin and rasping with age. He laced his fingers atop the table, his shoulders sagging as though a burden long carried had slid from them. “The Alpha has chosen. That alone should silence half the quarrels this council has squandered years upon.” His eyes slid toward certain persons farther down the left side of the table. They clicked their tongues and looked away. This was Ronhard, a foremost member of the council. Across from

Estella went rigid. The word struck like a thrown blade, and rage rose to meet it, hot enough to scald.“Say that again.” Her voice shook. “Say it once more, Adrian, and I shall tear that tongue from your mouth.”“Why bid me repeat what you heard full well?” His voice sank, far more mocking than before, which only inflamed her the further. “Does it not suit you? Or shall I seek a gentler word for what you are?”'How dare he? Such humiliation... never have I...'A low, feral growl built in her chest as she wrenched against his hold with all that her body had left, her claws sinking into her own palms behind her back. “I shall make of every hour of your existence a torment, Adrian! I swear it upon my life.”His brow arched.“What life is there to swear upon? The life you do not even prize? The very life you wished to take with your own hands? The life that belongs to me?” His words struck hard, and she twisted again, but his grip did not loosen in the slightest. If anything, her thrashi
