BETWEEN THE BEEPS

The room was strangely silent, you know? Machines just kept measuring his heart, beeping, pausing, then beeping again, while the fluorescent lights buzzed loudly overhead, almost too bright for it being this late. Ethan could only see the dark through the tiny window next to the bed, with headlights crisscrossing across the parking lot.

Jake was asleep, and for once not all broken up from the crash, and instead, he looked pretty peaceful.

CODINGEthan followed the doctor back to the room where Jake still snoozed in bed. He sat in the chair next to the bed and this time, when the monitor caught his eye, his gaze lazily swept across to where Jake lay. The boy who had spent years instructing him how not to do everything, driving him nuts, frightening the crap out of him and well, humiliating him too. But the boy who'd stood by him in ways Ethan hadn't yet figured out. Who made him afraid to be himself. Hard to imagine losing him now.Ethan touched Jake's hand softly, and Jake's hand twitched. Ethan held his breath; Jake's eyes fluttered."You still here?" Jake croaked out.Ethan blinked quickly. "Yeah. " he chuckled."You're supposed to be home.""So are you.""Technically, no." Jake looked around at the rails of the bed and the hoses.Ethan chuckled, and Jake groaned, rubbing his hand against his side. "Please don't make me laugh.""Sorry."Jake closed his eyes for a moment, then continued to speak with his eyes closed

BETWEEN THE BEEPS The room was strangely silent, you know? Machines just kept measuring his heart, beeping, pausing, then beeping again, while the fluorescent lights buzzed loudly overhead, almost too bright for it being this late. Ethan could only see the dark through the tiny window next to the bed, with headlights crisscrossing across the parking lot. Jake was asleep, and for once not all broken up from the crash, and instead, he looked pretty peaceful. That didn't make Ethan any more comfortable, though. His eyes kept darting to the monitor, checking the changing numbers, and whenever Jake moved even a little, he pushed himself closer to the bed. Blake was in the chair on the other side of the bed, quietly for a few minutes until he finally spoke up. "You're doing it again," Blake said as his head tipped to the side. "Doing what?"Ethan asked. "Watching the monitor."Ethan looked at the screen again, his jaw tight. "I'm just making sure he's okay." "The monitor's already doi

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 159: THE ACCIDENT

THE ACCIDENTThe ambulance ride to the hospital felt never-ending. Ethan was strapped into the jump seat as an EMT attended to Jake. The steady monitor beep-beeped in rhythm with their journey through the congested streets. Jake was mostly alert, though he struggled to keep his eyes open."Ethan?" he murmured, shifting his gaze toward him."Right here.""Are you all right?"Ethan let out a brittle laugh. "I'm not the one in an ambulance."Jake attempted a lopsided grin. "You worry entirely too much.""You could have died," Ethan remarked, gripping his seat.Jake blinked slowly. "Didn't.""Don't, just… don't.""I'm here," he repeated quietly.Ethan scrutinized his own hands, which were nicked from the asphalt, with drying blood caked on one of his palms. He hadn't noticed them until now. Jake observed them, too, his expression clouding. "You're hurt.""It's just cuts," Ethan said, clenching his fist."Are you sure?""Yes."Jake squeezed his eyes shut while the EMT took his vitals. "Alm

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 158: STILL BREATHING

STILL BREATHINGThe front door was still wide open. Jake was inside, holding it open and watching them through the doorway."Are you two coming, or are you planning to nap in the driveway?" he shouted.Blake grinned and Ethan shook his head. "We'll be right there." Ethan stepped onto the porch with Blake right behind him.The night air had cooled considerably, with the last of the sun disappearing behind the houses on the other side of the street. A few cars passed by occasionally and headlights started to flicker on as the neighborhood settled into bedtime. Jake let go of the door, ran back to the SUV to turn out the headlights he'd left on, and grabbed his keys from the ignition."You two are gonna be the end of me," he said, leaning into the driver's seat. And then it happened. They heard a car coming way too fast, and not quite right, and Ethan barely turned his head before a vehicle shot around the corner. Everything started to slow down. It was going way too fast for this street

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 157: AFTER SCHOOL

AFTER SCHOOL Once the school day was over, Ethan made his way to the chemistry laboratory, with Blake trailing not far behind. Mrs. Keller was already at her desk, stacking up her papers."You're early, you two," she said, raising her eyes."We wanted to wrap it up," Ethan nodded."Good."She slid a folder across the desk. "Here. I want you to look over the results again. Your numbers were on the nose, but your explanation was too brief."Ethan was thumbing through the folder and Blake peered over his shoulder. "How short?""Three paragraphs."Blake looked genuinely offended. "That's short?"Mrs. Keller eyed him for a moment. "For Ethan, yes."Ethan smiled. "Thank you.""Thank me when you graduate," she said as she returned to her papers.Blake sighed. "That sounds far away.""It is."They sat at one of the lab tables, and the next forty minutes they actually worked. Ethan did the calculations and Blake read the notes, arguing about the wording. Blake suggested a sentence and Ethan

  • GOLDEN BOY, BAD BOY   CHAPTER 156: AN ORDINARY KIND OF HAPPY

AN ORDINARY KIND OF HAPPYThe next morning felt different, though nothing around Brookwoods High had actually changed. The same buses stopped outside the gates, and the same students crowded around the entrance. The same teachers stood in the hallways with coffee cups and tired expressions, reminding people not to run.But Ethan felt different walking through it all. He wasn't checking every reflection in the glass, and he wasn't wondering whether somebody was watching him. He wasn't thinking about the administration calling his parents or his grades being frozen. The investigation was still open, but the worst of it had passed, and his name had been cleared of the accusation. For now, that was enough. He was halfway to his locker when someone bumped his shoulder."Morning, genius," Blake said, grinning down at him with his football bag hanging from one shoulder.Ethan glanced up at him. "You're early.""You're late.""It's eight.""Exactly."Ethan looked at the clock above the hallwa

THE TASTE OF REGRETThe house carried the strong smell of beer–one that Ethan knew too well. It mixed with the faint scent of cigarette smoke clinging to the couch cushions and curtains, welcoming him as he opened the door. Coughing, he pushed through the ash cloud as he prayed his brother was alr

DREAMS, DESKS AND DIRTY THOUGHTSHis hands were everywhere and his kisses were like fire, burning with passion.
