The roar of the crowd still echoed in Kai Reynolds’ ears as he stormed into Coach Harlan’s office, helmet dangling from his fingers. His jersey was soaked with sweat, his body buzzing from the game they’d barely won. But the victory tasted like ash tonight.

“Sit down,” Coach barked without looking up from his desk.

Kai dropped into the chair, jaw tight. “What the hell is this about?”

Coach slid a tablet across the desk. On the screen was Zara Kane’s latest article, the one that had blown their program wide open. “Cover-Up at the Top: How Star Athletes Play Dirty While the University Looks Away.”

Kai’s blood turned to fire. That woman.

Zara Kane. The sharp-tongued journalist who had been a thorn in his side for months. The same woman whose brother he ……..

“You’re going to fix this,” Coach said coldly. “Publicly.”

Kai laughed, dark and humorless. “And how exactly am I supposed to do that?”

Coach leaned back, eyes hard. “You’re going to date her. Fake it till the scandal dies down. Make the world see the team’s golden boy in a committed relationship with the woman who tried to destroy us. Humanize the program.”

Kai shot to his feet. “You’ve lost your damn mind.”

“Sit. Down.”

Sit. Down .”

Sit. Down.” The coach's voice was steel. “This isn’t a request, Reynolds. Your NFL future is on the line. Hers too, I hear the university is considering expelling her for the article. Play nice, or you both lose everything.”

***********

Across campus, Zara Kane slammed her laptop shut, heart pounding with a mix of triumph and dread.

She had done it. The article was out. The truth about the football program’s dirty plays, the ones that had ended her brother’s career, was finally public.

But her victory was short-lived.

Her phone rang. Unknown number. She answered anyway.

“Miss Kane.” Coach Harlan’s voice was calm, too calm. “We need to talk. Now.”

Twenty minutes later, Zara stood in Coach Harlan’s office, arms crossed tightly over her chest like a shield. Kai Reynolds was already there, leaning against the wall with that arrogant, entitled posture, as if he owned the entire building. His intense dark eyes locked onto her with pure, burning hatred.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Zara spat, her voice sharp with disbelief.

Coach Harlan didn’t even blink. “No jokes here, Miss Kane. You two will publicly date for the next nine months.”

“What?!” Zara shouted, her heart slamming against her ribs.

“You heard me,” Coach replied coldly. “Appear together. Smile for the cameras. Repair the damage you caused with that article.”

Zara’s stomach dropped like a stone. “I’d rather drop out of school than pretend to be with him.”

Kai pushed off the wall, stepping closer until his towering frame loomed over her. His voice was low and dangerous. “And I’d rather lose my entire NFL future than fake a relationship with the woman trying to destroy my team. But here we are.”

Coach stood from his desk, eyes hard as steel. “Pack your things, Miss Kane. You’re moving into the athlete housing with Reynolds tonight. For authenticity. Refuse, and both of you can kiss your futures goodbye.”

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Zara’s eyes met Kai’s. The air crackled with raw animosity… and something dangerously hotter.

Kai’s gaze dropped to her lips for a split second before he looked away, jaw clenched so tight it looked painful.

“Fine,” Zara whispered, her voice shaking with rage and fear. “But don’t think for one second I’ll make this easy for you, Reynolds.”

A dark, dangerous smile curved Kai’s mouth.

“Wouldn’t dream of it, Kane.”

The next three days blurred into a suffocating cycle of performance and barely contained chaos.Every morning, Zara woke to the relentless thud of weights from the home gym. Kai punished his body like he was fighting demons, grunting with each rep, the sound vibrating through the walls. She would lie in bed, fists clenched, reminding herself why she hated him.Every evening, they were paraded like trophies. A quick coffee run where Kai’s arm stayed possessively around her waist while cameras clicked. A study session in the library where his large hand rested high on her thigh under the table, fingers occasionally tightening in silent warning whenever someone glanced their way. A late-night “romantic” walk around the illuminated football field, PR snapping photos as Kai pulled her close and pressed a kiss to her temple for the cameras. Each touch burned. Each forced smile chipped away at her soul. Each lingering look made her question her own sanity. And every single night, Zara la

The kiss still burned on Zara’s lips as the SUV carried them back to the athlete house in heavy silence. Neither of them had spoken since they left the balcony. The air between them was thick, electric, and dangerous.Kai stared out the window, jaw locked so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. His hand flexed on his thigh like he was still fighting the urge to touch her again. Zara sat as far away from him as possible, arms wrapped around herself, trying to steady her breathing. She could still taste him. Feel the possessive grip of his hand in her hair. Hate and desire twisted so tightly inside her chest she wanted to scream. When they finally stepped inside the house, Kai closed the door behind them with deliberate slowness. The soft click sounded louder than it should have.Zara didn’t even make it two steps before he spoke.“We need to talk.”She spun around. “There’s nothing to talk about. That kiss was a mistake. It won’t happen again.”Kai stalked toward her, eyes dark and inte

The next morning, sunlight sliced through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the athlete house like a knife. Zara hadn’t slept more than two hours. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt Kai’s body pressed against hers, his breath on her forehead, the dangerous heat in his eyes. She hated how her body remembered every second. She emerged from her room in black leggings and a cropped hoodie, determined to act normal. The smell of coffee hit her immediately. Kai stood at the kitchen counter, shirtless again, pouring two mugs like he owned the entire world. He didn’t look at her. “Coffee’s there. Don’t expect me to make it every morning.”Zara walked over and took the mug, careful not to let their fingers brush. “I don’t expect anything from you except staying out of my way.”Kai finally turned, leaning back against the counter. His eyes slowly dragged down her body before snapping back to her face. The look was so intense it felt like a physical touch.“We have our first public appearanc

The heavy front door of the luxury athlete housing unit clicked shut behind Zara like the final nail in a coffin. The sound echoed through the sleek, modern space that smelled of expensive cologne and barely contained rage. She stood frozen in the entryway, suitcase handle tight in her grip, eyes locked on the man who had just become her worst nightmare.Kai Reynolds leaned against the kitchen island, arms crossed over his bare, sculpted chest. Gray sweatpants hung dangerously low on his hips, revealing the sharp V-line of his abs. His dark hair was still damp from a shower, and those intense, stormy eyes burned into her with pure, unfiltered hatred.Neither of them spoke for a long, suffocating moment. Finally, Kai’s deep voice cut through the silence like a blade. “You’ve got some fucking nerve showing up here.”Zara’s heart hammered against her ribs, but she refused to let him see her fear. She lifted her chin, gripping her suitcase harder. “Trust me, this is the last place I want
