Celeste

That night, sleep refused to come.

The castle felt heavier than usual, as though every wall was listening. Even the wind outside had gone still. It was the kind of silence that made you feel as if something was about to happen, something you couldn’t name yet but could feel in your bones.

Lyra had fallen asleep hours ago, her breathing uneven. She was pale, drained from what happened in the interrogation room. When I touched her forehead earlier, her skin was cold, and she’d murmured something under her breath before slipping back into uneasy dreams.

I sat by the window, staring at the pale wash of moonlight spilling across the floor. My reflection in the glass looked ghostly—familiar, but not entirely mine. The book on telepathy lay open on my lap, its pages whispering faintly when the wind moved through the cracks in the wall.

I should have burned it.

But I couldn’t. Not when it might be the only thing that could give me an advantage over Edgar.

My mind kept rep

CELESTE Another round of training Lyra ended, and I sat exhausted. Volunteering your mind to a mind reader a the easiest of decisions to make. There were secrets I kept close to my chest. I, of course, didn't give her full access, but who's to say she'd need one in the future. I shook my head I was being paranoid. I didn't like that. “How about some tea?” Selene asked. “I'm going to need something stronger than tea.” I said to her She smirked. “Coming up.” As teens, Selena and I used to sneak out and go get drinks from my father's cellar. One time, we drank something stronger than what we usually did without knowing. We past our for a day and a half, and that was how my father found out we were the “drink thieves.” Just thinking about those simpler times filled my chest with warmth. That's why if was hard for me to believe Edgae's words about my father. He wasn't that type of man. To kill his own people and blame it on. Arthur? No, it made no sense.

Edgar “You seem deep in thought,” Maverick said as he walked into my study in his usual slow as a tortoise fashion. I looked up, and sighed. “Yes, just trying to understand the motives of the resistance.” I said casually. “I thought we already established that it's because of your queen.” “And I told you, I believe there's more. Celeste is just a way to get more people to join their insane sect.” A sect that I would soon crush. I had been pondering this ever since Celeste’s servant girl was kidnapped. Why her? They could easily have kidnapped one of the concubines, but they didn't. Instead, they settled for a servant girl I wouldn't care about. I suppose whoever was the mole knee Celeste would want to get her back, and I wouldn't be able to say no to her. “I'm sure it has something to do with your reign.” Maverick answered, taking a seat in front of my desk and curling his leg in his usual serpentine fashion. “Really? I wouldn't have guessed. I need more. I need to crush

Celeste I didn't go to the ridiculous gathering.I hid in a corridor with Lyra…I had sent Sylvester on a wife goose chase too.If they thought I was going to attend and play doll house with a bunch of catty women, they had another thing coming.I didn't care about keeping up appearances with a kingdom that hated me. I was sure the only reason I had been left alone all this while was simply because Edgar would kill whoever tried to mess with meIf there was one thing, I knew about him was his off affection, no, obsession for me.He was ruthless and mean when it came to everyone else, but me? He spoke to me like I was the most important thing to him which I found incredibly hard to believe. But I was going to utilize that privilege as possible, but for now, there were too many things on my mindLike my father's arrival. Why had he not written to me that he was coming? Was he upset that I hadn't made any real progress yet?I couldn't wait to tell him about Lyra.Lyra was our gate way t

Celeste “Duties?” I asked, staring at the flies on the table.“Yes, my love. You are queen. You have social duties. The people expect it. You've been here for two weeks. It's time you show you are queen to your people.”I winced at the way he said those words.Like being queen was the most prestigious position in the world. It was in a way, but there was something about the way he said it that made me uncomfortable.“So, what? I am supposed to host tea parties with the ladies at court that despise me?”I asked“Precisely.”I glared“You can't be serious. I don't want to do any of this. I don't care for it, besides we are still working on the case, remember. The translator is not done yet.”He smiled, and walked over to me, his hands closing in on my shoulders. My wolf, as usual, was happy he was near. She was such a a harlot “My love, you can do two things at the same time. I have seen you lead an army, and conquered nations in your father's name. Surely, a couple of catty women do

CelesteI didn’t move. Not even an inch. I let Edgar hold me close to his chest. The steady rhythm of his heartbeat brought me a strange comfort that I tried to bury, but refused to be buried.“I think I should be paid for this particular service,” I said into the silence.Edgar's chest rumbled as he laughed.“Do not pretend you don’t enjoy my company. I can smell your scent, remember?”I froze.“Shhh. Relax your body, my love. There's no reason to hide from me, you'ree my mate. I will always see you.”My breath caught. Why did he insist on saying things like this? Was it to arouse me? or worse was it working?“You're thinking again.” He murmured. “You don’t have to be so cold in the bedroom, you know that, don’t you?”“You don’t know me, Edgar,” I whispered.Edgar remained silent, but the weight of his unspoken word sat between us.“Your father will be here in a few days.”I turned faster than I thought was possible, and came face to face with him, our faces too close to each other.
