Chapter 2

Author: Icicle
A deathly silence fell over the drawing room. I didn't care for the stunned expressions on Enzo's, Otto's, Marcela's, or Raphael's faces and just turned my back on them, heading for the stairs instead.

The maids around us began whispering, "Look, I think Signorina Casati is really angry now."

"She wouldn't actually cancel the suitor selection banquet, would she?"

"How could she? The whole Famiglia knows that her husband must be chosen from one of the four signori."

"You're right. But if that's the case, then why is she making such a huge scene? What if none of them show up tomorrow? That's going to be even more embarrassing for her."

The maids weren't loud, but it was so quiet that everyone could hear their whispers.

The four men who'd just stood up from the couch sat back down at once.

"Miria!"

I paused on the stairs and turned around. Lia stood at the foot of the stairs, clutching the hem of her dress and looking up at me. The diamond necklace on her neck glittered dazzlingly in the light, and tear tracks still lingered on her face, making her look deeply aggrieved.

Her shoulders trembled as she spoke softly. "Please don't blame them for this, Miria. I know that my status makes me unworthy of their protection, but I was truly terrified."

She met my expressionless gaze, and her shoulders shook even more violently as fresh tears spilled down her cheeks.

"I know that I'm just a lowly commoner, but I still spent many years trying to be your friend. I've only longed for you to treat me with genuine sincerity!"

I smiled. I was laughing at my five-year-old self back then, when Lia did and said the same things to me, and I was moved to tears. Ever since then, I'd kept her by my side as my companion. We ate together, slept together, attended the same elite school, wore the same dresses, and shared the same table.

Whenever I had something, I would always make sure to prepare her portion as well, worried that she would feel inferior to me.

And now, she was standing in my Famiglia's drawing room, wearing a seven-figure dress I had given her, and looking every bit a Principessa, yet still shamelessly telling everyone that I had been trampling on her "sincere" feelings all along.

I didn't want to waste another word on her, so I turned my back to her and continued walking upstairs, but she grabbed the hem of my dress from behind.

"Please don't ignore me."

I reached out and pulled my dress free without even looking back. But before my hand even touched the fabric, I heard Lia cry out in alarm.

I stopped and turned around, only to see Otto catching her as she stumbled.

"I didn't—"

Marcela interrupted before I could even get another word out. "Miria Casati! Apologize to her this instant!"

I looked at him and scoffed. "Why should I?"

Raphael also rushed over in a rage. "You can't just go around bullying people left and right just because you think your high status makes you think you're better than us!"

Enzo walked up and shook his head. "It's fine if you refuse to treat her as a friend. You should just say it to her face instead of playing with her dignity just for fun."

Otto also looked at me darkly. "Miria."

I felt my heart clench. This was the first time he'd ever spoken to me like that.

"You know that the difference in our statuses creates an inherent psychological burden on all of us, and your words and actions have always been oppressive toward her. Can't you see that she's already suffering from a nervous breakdown?"

As I listened, I felt my heart being pierced by a thousand needles. The pain was simply too excruciating.

Scenes from the past flashed through my mind like an endless movie reel.

Before my period, Marcela would always prepare hot water bottles for me and help me massage my tummy to ease the discomfort. Every night, Enzo would quietly tuck my blanket around me if it had slipped off. Whenever I felt down, Raphael would come up with little surprises to cheer me up, and at meals, Otto would swap out the foods I didn't like for the ones that I loved.

Now, all of their affection and tenderness belonged to Lia instead.

I took a deep breath and tore off the cross necklace from my chest. It was the one they had obtained from the chapel after praying there on their knees for 100 days.

Marcela and Raphael cried out in unison.

"What… What are you doing?"

Enzo also took a few nervous steps forward. "You're being far too willful and reckless. Do you really think this gives you leverage over us? Who else would ever want to marry you if not one of us?"

Otto stared fixedly at me, his Adam's apple bobbing as he said, "Don't test our patience, Miria. Reflect on your behavior tonight, and we might still show up for the banquet tomorrow, albeit reluctantly."

Lia glanced up at me, a hint of smugness flashing in her eyes.

I let go of the cross necklace, letting it drop into the trash can.

"Sure. Just you wait."

  • Gave Up Four, Gained My One   Chapter 9

When I came back in the afternoon, Soldati and bodyguards were stationed all along the roads for at least ten miles leading into the estate. As soon as I drove my car through the main gate, I saw Lorenzo pacing anxiously in the foyer.I quickly got out of the car and ran over to hug him. He didn't ask me any questions and simply stroked my hair and spoke softly to me."Next time, tell me if you want to go out. It's only safe if I'm by your side."I nodded meekly and took out the gift I'd prepared for him. It was a pair of matching mother-of-pearl cufflinks—a unisex design that I had specifically created for us.I fastened them onto his cuffs and planted a kiss on his lips."I want to hold onto the rest of your life and lock you by my side forever!"And just like that, Lorenzo, a six-foot-three man towering over me, was actually moved to tears by my words.Neither of us brought up the unpleasant people or events of the past anymore after that. Life after marriage was quiet and h

I took a few steps back to avoid Otto."You don't need to apologize. If anything, I should actually thank you instead," I replied. "If it were not for your betrayal, I would have missed out on Lorenzo completely."Otto's arm hung in midair. His eyes were bloodshot, and his voice was low and hoarse. "Really? But I can't let go of you. What am I supposed to do now?"He covered his face and crouched to the ground in despair, sobbing in remorse. I just looked at him with an impassive expression on my face."It's not my business whether you can let go of me or not," I said. "It's got nothing to do with me anymore. Also, don't you show your faces in front of me again. I have no desire to see any of you."Enzo spoke up tentatively. "But… Are you still living here, though?"He was still as smart and cunning as ever. Even now, he still thought there was a possibility that my marriage to Lorenzo was nothing but an act.I cocked an eyebrow at him. "You can wait here for Lorenzo to return a

Gasps rippled through the crowd as they watched the video, and my hands clenched instinctively. It wasn't that I was still in pain. I was simply angry at myself for having been so blind to their true colors. Then, I appeared on the screen. This time, Enzo, Otto, Raphael, and Marcela could all see that Lia was the one who staged the fall herself, yet they had criticized me and forced me to apologize to her without hesitation. The scene then cut to Lia deliberately splashing the beef stew onto the back of my hand, followed by the moment they barged in and hurled verbal abuse at me.Finally, the footage froze on my expressionless face. The four men instantly slumped to the ground, utterly defeated. Meanwhile, Lia's face turned a sickly white, looking completely wretched.I said nothing and just watched them being dragged out of the estate by the bodyguards, feeling absolutely calm and collected. I then turned to Papa with a smile and walked toward him and Lorenzo. The engagement ba

A deep, resonant voice rang out, startling the four suitors into dropping to their knees almost instantly.I turned to look at Papa as he approached. He was a man of few words and decisive, ruthless authority. His crimson eyes were burning with rage as he approached us.I remembered attending a wedding when I was little. Back then, I'd watched the bride tearfully bid her parents farewell, and at that moment I'd turned to Papa and told him that I never wanted to be a bride when I grew up and marry into another Famiglia because I didn't want to be separated from him.Not long after, the four of them showed up and began to keep me company."I'm sorry for my oversight, Miria," Papa said. "I can't believe that I allowed such ungrateful wretches to stay close to you all this time!"I lit up with a bright smile and stepped forward, affectionately linking my arms with his, staring at the graying hair at his temples."It's okay, Papa. I'm all grown up now. I can handle this myself."He p

In an instant, every gaze in the venue snapped toward the main entrance of the estate. A fleet of jet-black Maybachs was lined up in a perfect row, flanked by two long lines of bowing bodyguards.A young man in a bespoke suit walked toward me. It was Lorenzo Vaccaro. His eyes were sharp and menacing as they locked on Otto's hand that was grabbing my wrist. Otto was so intimidated by his imposing presence that he withdrew his hand at once.Lorenzo stopped before me and gently took my hand, his eyes full of deep affection. A murmur of astonishment rippled through the crowd on the lawn."Oh my god, it's Lorenzo Vaccaro! The heir to the Vaccaro Famiglia!""If Signorina Casati really entered into an alliance with Signore Vaccaro, they'd be a perfect match!""Exactly! Although the four of Signorina's suitors were personally selected and groomed by Don Casati himself, they're still no competition for Signore Vaccaro!""They make such a perfect couple!"Otto clenched his fists until h

  • Gave Up Four, Gained My One   Chapter 4

I slept exceptionally well that night.Early the next morning, the engagement gifts, jewelry, and formal attire prepared for us by the Vaccaro Famiglia arrived. The entire estate was surrounded by a sea of flowers and exuded an air of romance.Stylists and dressers bustled about, transforming me into something like a royal Principessa.Meanwhile, in the men's dressing room, Marcela tugged at his bow tie and grumbled, "All that talk about cancelling the suitor selection banquet was a bluff. She was just trying to scare us."Raphael leaned against the table, glancing out the window with a nonchalant air. "Unless Miria comes to personally invite us today, I'm absolutely not going."Enzo nodded thoughtfully. "Indeed, she needs to learn a lesson—she must understand that one of us four is the true heir of the family." Marcela rubbed his chin. "Who do you think Miria's going to choose?"Otto, who had been adjusting his cufflinks, paused for a moment, the corners of his mouth lifting a
