Papa looked up from his desk and regarded me with a puzzled expression.

"Didn't you already pick Otto?" he asked.

"I've changed my mind," I simply replied.

Papa walked over, placed his arm around my shoulders, and leaned in to look at me. "Are you serious about this?"

A slight pause later, he asked again, "Did they bully you?"

I fell silent for a bit. I didn't want Papa to think that the people he'd chosen to protect me had become the ones who hurt me. After all, I used to think that I was the only one that the four of them—Enzo Mazzola, Otto Giunta, Marcela Sechi, and Raphael Rosetti—cared about.

Marcela would scour the entire city in the middle of the night just to find a specific pastry for me; Raphael would tear up and fuss over me like a mother hen if I got injured; Enzo would take punishments on my behalf; and Otto would take a bullet for me without a moment of hesitation.

Those moments of tenderness were real. That was why I always told myself that the kindness they showed toward Lia was simply because she'd been my companion since we were young.

But now, I finally realized the truth. Their kindness hadn't simply spilled over onto her. They were really biased and showed genuine favoritism toward her.

The moment I came out of Papa's study, I heard Lia sobbing in the drawing room. The four of them surrounded her, patiently trying to comfort her.

She was wearing the new dress that I'd bought her just yesterday. She had burst into tears, claiming that she was just the housekeeper's daughter and therefore unworthy of attending my banquet, so I had specifically taken her out dress shopping and bought her a seven-figure dress.

And now, a large diamond necklace hung around her neck as well.

I had seen that necklace in Otto's room before, and I'd assumed that it was a surprise he was preparing for me. I'd even gotten so overjoyed that I barely slept all night.

Raphael was the first one to notice me. He glanced toward the study and let out a cold snort.

"Don't tell me that you just came out from Don Cisati's study, Miria."

Everyone turned to look at me. Lia was the first to jump to her feet in alarm.

"M-Miria… I… I…"

She ended up sobbing even harder after that.

Enzo immediately steadied her and eased her back onto the couch before looking up at me. "Did you really have to go and bother Don Cisati over a minor incident?"

I curled my lips into a smirk and met his eyes. "Just a minor incident? Is that why all of you ran off so fast?"

Enzo scoffed. "Aren't you the one always complaining that you never got a chance to show off your skills whenever we're around? That was the perfect chance for you to 'practice your skills.'"

Raphael chimed in. "Exactly. How could we possibly let someone as innocent as Lia witness bloodshed like that?"

Marcel reached out to smooth Lia's hair without even looking up at me. He said, "It's not like you lost any limbs or got hurt, did you? Stop making a huge fuss over nothing."

Otto, who was still holding Lia's hand, sighed softly. "You know Lia is timid and scared easily. Since you're home safe now, there's no need for you to continue making things awkward for everyone else."

He used to say this to me, and I thought it was quite gentlemanly of him. But now that I was hearing it from him again, it just grated on my ears.

"What if something had happened to me today?"

The four of them reacted as though they'd just heard the joke of the century. They laughed out loud in unison.

"Come on," Marcela said. "You trained with us since young, and there are less than a handful of people who can beat you. There's no way you got hurt."

Otto saw the look on my face and got up to approach me. He then said in a resigned tone, "Alright, that's enough. You're back safe and sound, so go get some rest now. We'll all make a grand appearance at the suitor selection banquet tomorrow."

I unclenched my fists, looked up, and smiled at him.

"The suitor selection banquet tomorrow has been cancelled."

  • Gave Up Four, Gained My One   Chapter 9

When I came back in the afternoon, Soldati and bodyguards were stationed all along the roads for at least ten miles leading into the estate. As soon as I drove my car through the main gate, I saw Lorenzo pacing anxiously in the foyer.I quickly got out of the car and ran over to hug him. He didn't ask me any questions and simply stroked my hair and spoke softly to me."Next time, tell me if you want to go out. It's only safe if I'm by your side."I nodded meekly and took out the gift I'd prepared for him. It was a pair of matching mother-of-pearl cufflinks—a unisex design that I had specifically created for us.I fastened them onto his cuffs and planted a kiss on his lips."I want to hold onto the rest of your life and lock you by my side forever!"And just like that, Lorenzo, a six-foot-three man towering over me, was actually moved to tears by my words.Neither of us brought up the unpleasant people or events of the past anymore after that. Life after marriage was quiet and h

I took a few steps back to avoid Otto."You don't need to apologize. If anything, I should actually thank you instead," I replied. "If it were not for your betrayal, I would have missed out on Lorenzo completely."Otto's arm hung in midair. His eyes were bloodshot, and his voice was low and hoarse. "Really? But I can't let go of you. What am I supposed to do now?"He covered his face and crouched to the ground in despair, sobbing in remorse. I just looked at him with an impassive expression on my face."It's not my business whether you can let go of me or not," I said. "It's got nothing to do with me anymore. Also, don't you show your faces in front of me again. I have no desire to see any of you."Enzo spoke up tentatively. "But… Are you still living here, though?"He was still as smart and cunning as ever. Even now, he still thought there was a possibility that my marriage to Lorenzo was nothing but an act.I cocked an eyebrow at him. "You can wait here for Lorenzo to return a

Gasps rippled through the crowd as they watched the video, and my hands clenched instinctively. It wasn't that I was still in pain. I was simply angry at myself for having been so blind to their true colors. Then, I appeared on the screen. This time, Enzo, Otto, Raphael, and Marcela could all see that Lia was the one who staged the fall herself, yet they had criticized me and forced me to apologize to her without hesitation. The scene then cut to Lia deliberately splashing the beef stew onto the back of my hand, followed by the moment they barged in and hurled verbal abuse at me.Finally, the footage froze on my expressionless face. The four men instantly slumped to the ground, utterly defeated. Meanwhile, Lia's face turned a sickly white, looking completely wretched.I said nothing and just watched them being dragged out of the estate by the bodyguards, feeling absolutely calm and collected. I then turned to Papa with a smile and walked toward him and Lorenzo. The engagement ba

A deep, resonant voice rang out, startling the four suitors into dropping to their knees almost instantly.I turned to look at Papa as he approached. He was a man of few words and decisive, ruthless authority. His crimson eyes were burning with rage as he approached us.I remembered attending a wedding when I was little. Back then, I'd watched the bride tearfully bid her parents farewell, and at that moment I'd turned to Papa and told him that I never wanted to be a bride when I grew up and marry into another Famiglia because I didn't want to be separated from him.Not long after, the four of them showed up and began to keep me company."I'm sorry for my oversight, Miria," Papa said. "I can't believe that I allowed such ungrateful wretches to stay close to you all this time!"I lit up with a bright smile and stepped forward, affectionately linking my arms with his, staring at the graying hair at his temples."It's okay, Papa. I'm all grown up now. I can handle this myself."He p

In an instant, every gaze in the venue snapped toward the main entrance of the estate. A fleet of jet-black Maybachs was lined up in a perfect row, flanked by two long lines of bowing bodyguards.A young man in a bespoke suit walked toward me. It was Lorenzo Vaccaro. His eyes were sharp and menacing as they locked on Otto's hand that was grabbing my wrist. Otto was so intimidated by his imposing presence that he withdrew his hand at once.Lorenzo stopped before me and gently took my hand, his eyes full of deep affection. A murmur of astonishment rippled through the crowd on the lawn."Oh my god, it's Lorenzo Vaccaro! The heir to the Vaccaro Famiglia!""If Signorina Casati really entered into an alliance with Signore Vaccaro, they'd be a perfect match!""Exactly! Although the four of Signorina's suitors were personally selected and groomed by Don Casati himself, they're still no competition for Signore Vaccaro!""They make such a perfect couple!"Otto clenched his fists until h

  • Gave Up Four, Gained My One   Chapter 4

I slept exceptionally well that night.Early the next morning, the engagement gifts, jewelry, and formal attire prepared for us by the Vaccaro Famiglia arrived. The entire estate was surrounded by a sea of flowers and exuded an air of romance.Stylists and dressers bustled about, transforming me into something like a royal Principessa.Meanwhile, in the men's dressing room, Marcela tugged at his bow tie and grumbled, "All that talk about cancelling the suitor selection banquet was a bluff. She was just trying to scare us."Raphael leaned against the table, glancing out the window with a nonchalant air. "Unless Miria comes to personally invite us today, I'm absolutely not going."Enzo nodded thoughtfully. "Indeed, she needs to learn a lesson—she must understand that one of us four is the true heir of the family." Marcela rubbed his chin. "Who do you think Miria's going to choose?"Otto, who had been adjusting his cufflinks, paused for a moment, the corners of his mouth lifting a
