Chapter 5

Author: Faye Murrow
Selena was a little surprised, but relieved. At least there would be no misunderstanding.

Juliet leaned over and whispered to Leona, mostly about whether there was something wrong with her uncle since he was still single. Her smile was teasingly ambiguous.

At that age, girls already understood everything.

Selena couldn't help but sigh. "Alright, that's enough. Let's eat."

The two girls quickly focused on their meal. Once finished, their excitement returned as they eagerly began brainstorming with Selena about how to shoot videos and make them eye-catching. They were way more experienced with short videos, and their youthful creativity was endless.

Selena listened carefully, taking notes and soaking up every piece of advice.

Time flew by. When Leona's driver arrived, the girl didn't want to leave.

Selena escorted her downstairs, where a car was already waiting. When Selena saw the car, she was slightly surprised.

It was Zachary's car, the same car she had seen earlier today.

Leona's eyes widened. "That's my uncle's car."

The rear car window rolled down, revealing Zachary's figure. In the darkness, the streetlights cast into the car, highlighting the sharp, clean line of his jaw.

He looked up, his deep black eyes cold and piercing.

"Uncle Zach, you're a busy bigshot, but you actually came to pick me up yourself? I feel truly honored!" Leona's tone was sarcastic, and she didn't look particularly pleased.

Still, she introduced the two formally.

"Ms. Jones, this is my uncle, Zachary Foster. Uncle Zach, this is my friend Juliet's mom, Selena Jones. You've met before, right?"

Selena smiled. "Yes, we have. Hello, Mr. Foster. Leona, you should get in the car. Come over again when you have time. You're always welcome."

"Got it, Ms. Jones. See you!"

Leona climbed in, and Zachary gave a slight nod before the window rolled up. Then, the car slowly pulled away.

Inside, Leona couldn't resist complaining to her uncle.

"Did you just get off work now, Uncle Zach? Not that I'm judging, but you're such a workaholic. And you're still single at your age. Doesn't your life get boring?"

"And at your age, don't you think your crushes are so exciting?" Zachary coldly replied.

Leona froze instantly, her face flushing bright red. She couldn't move.

"W-What? I would never! Don't accuse me like that!"

"I'll tell your parents the truth when they get back," Zachary said calmly.

"No, don't! I'm sorry, Uncle Zach. It wasn't a crush or anything. I was just...confused for a bit. I didn't do anything. Really, I'm sorry," she stammered.

Zachary closed his eyes, tilting his head back as if resting. Leona dared not speak another word, though she was still worried that he might tell her parents.

After a while, she said cautiously, "Uncle Zach, it's actually kind of nice that you're single and unmarried. Look at Ms. Jones. She's single too now and seems to be living so freely alone."

Zachary slowly opened his eyes, his gaze deep and unreadable as it landed on Leona.

"She lives alone?"

"Yeah. She's divorced. But Juliet said the paperwork isn't finalized yet, so Ms. Jones moved here to live alone for now."

Zachary remained silent, listening as Leona chattered on, and didn't interrupt her.

"Ms. Jones is so pretty and really talented. That apartment may be small and simple, but she's made it so cozy and unique. I even took a ton of pictures! And her cooking is amazing, Uncle Zach! Better than the fancy chef we have at home.

"Also, she's looking for work, but she wants to start with social media and private catering. I'm definitely going to support her. Uncle Zach, if there's any event at home, you should invite Ms. Jones to cater and give her some business—"

Leona didn't expect an answer from Zachary.

But to her surprise, he suddenly spoke.

"You painted a piece you thought was good, didn't you? You could invite friends to come see it."

"What?"

Leona blinked, clearly surprised.

Wait, really?

"T-That works too, I guess." Leona couldn't think of a better excuse, but it would do. "So next week, I—"

"This weekend will work."

"That soon?"

Zachary's eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at his niece, and Leona immediately felt she had said something wrong.

"Actually, that doesn't sound too bad. Ms. Jones does need work now, and she wants to expand her reach. This is kind of urgent, right? I'll tell her tomorrow and invite her over the day after. It's a good chance to test the waters."

Back at home, Leona went to her room. After showering and scrolling on her phone, she told Juliet about what had happened.

Selena was nearby, and she overheard and promised to prepare carefully. It was already late, so they didn't discuss the details much that night.

The next day, Selena got right to work. She planned the menu, checked with Leona about how many friends would be coming, and made note of everyone's likes and dislikes. She finalized the menu and sent it to Leona.

After checking with her friends, Leona confirmed the guest list. As for the ingredients, she had her family buy everything according to Selena's instructions.

Early Sunday morning, Selena would arrive at the Foster family's residence to begin preparations.

On Sunday, Selena brought Juliet to the villa, Zachary's residence.

The villa was located in a luxury neighborhood developed by the Foster Group a few years ago, set amid hills and rivers, with elegant villas quietly nestled into the landscape.

Since Leona's parents were often abroad, she usually lived with her grandparents in Foster Manor. With her grandparents traveling recently, she was staying at Zachary's villa instead.

Selena took a taxi and passed several security checkpoints before entering Isle Haven, Zachary's private villa. She was escorted to the front door, and she stepped inside after knocking.

A butler led her in, and she bumped straight into Zachary.

He looked like he had just finished working out, and the heat radiating off his body brushed against her in the cool morning air.

He wore a gray tracksuit, sweat dripping from his forehead and tracing the contours of his muscles. His damp black hair fell loosely across his face, softening the faintly intimidating presence he usually projected in formal attire.

Now, he moved with the relaxed, effortless ease of someone just coming off a workout.

Jonathan looked at Isabella."You can help me? You're Selena's best friend. What's in it for you?"Why would she turn on her friend to take his side? It didn't make sense to Jonathan. Unless… Isabella wanted something from him.Seeing the suspicion in his eyes, Isabella slowly leaned closer and brushed her fingertips against the back of his hand. Her voice trembled slightly with a hint of nervousness, and her eyes glimmered with soft charm."Actually, I've had feelings for you for a long time."Jonathan raised an eyebrow, but didn't move."It started even before Selena came into the picture."A faint, knowing smile tugged at Jonathan's lips."Really? Then why didn't you say something back then? If you had told me before Selena showed up, maybe things would've turned out differently."A blush spread across Isabella's cheeks. She looked shy, like a girl confessing her first crush."You were way out of my league back then, so I didn't have the confidence. Soon after, you star

Jonathan sat alone at the bar, drinking one glass after another. A few women came over trying to flirt, but he shooed them away.Normally, if he were in the mood, he might have taken one of them upstairs to blow off some steam. But tonight, he wasn't in the mood for anything. The anger from being played by Selena still burned in his chest, refusing to fade.In Jonathan's mind, Selena had always been a pretty but stupid woman. For years, he had kept her at home like a pampered pet, thinking she would just cook a little, shop for fun, and go to the spa. He never thought she had any real thoughts of her own.He figured her demand for a divorce was nothing more than a burst of emotion, some desperate measure driven by love and disappointment. But what he didn't expect was that Selena would actually go behind his back and take half of his assets.Sure, it was all under Juliet's name now, but it still felt like a huge loss to him."Mr. Campbell."A woman's voice came from behind him,

Jonathan's expression faltered for a moment, guilt flashing briefly in his eyes. But just as quickly, his anger returned, sharper and hotter."So you really still want a divorce?""I've wanted it all along."Selena met his gaze head-on, calm and unwavering. That flawless face of hers, which had seemed so gentle and tender just hours ago, now looked hateful to Jonathan. She was so sweet and soft during the day when she coaxed him into signing away nearly half his assets, but she was now cold and distant.Jonathan realized he had really underestimated her. He clenched his jaw, his anger spilling out. "Hah, well-played! You're really something else."Without another word, he got into his car in a huff and drove off.Selena's eyes lowered slightly. The night air was cool, the streetlights casting a shadow of her thin figure across the pavement. She looked lonely, yet somehow radiant. When Selena got home, her phone lit up with a video call from Juliet. She answered right away, w

Selena didn't respond to Jonathan. She turned her eyes toward the school gate and quickly spotted Juliet. A genuine smile warmed her face.Juliet instantly noticed her mother standing there, looking tall, graceful, and effortlessly beautiful. Even her gentle smile seemed to make everything around her feel lighter."Mom!"Juliet hurried over, her ponytail bouncing with every step. Her face glowed with joy as she threw herself into Selena's soft, familiar embrace.Selena looked at her daughter with affection, took the backpack from Juliet's hand, and passed it to Jonathan. "Is there anything you want to eat? Your dad and I are taking you out for dinner tonight."That was when Juliet finally noticed Jonathan. Her face instantly gave her away. After all, she was never one to hide how she felt. Her smile faded, and she puffed her cheeks slightly."I thought you were too busy."Her tone carried a touch of sarcasm.Selena shot Jonathan a sharp look, kind of like a silent warning. He

After wrapping things up at Campbell Enterprise, Harley returned to his law firm and gave Zachary a call."It's all taken care of. Everything went smoothly. Ms. Jones got exactly what she deserved.""Thanks."Harley raised a brow. "Funny, you're the one thanking me. Shouldn't Ms. Jones be the one saying that? Also, who's covering my legal fees, you or her?""I'll have William handle it.""So you're paying, huh? What are you to Ms. Jones, exactly?"Zachary stayed silent. Harley smirked, but didn't push it. Then, his tone turned playful."You know why things went so smoothly? Guess I underestimated Ms. Jones yesterday. She's not naive at all. Beauty can be a dangerous weapon, and she sure knows how to use it. The way she sweet-talked Jonathan into signing that deal was impressive, to say the least. Let me give you a friendly warning: watch yourself. That sweet smile of hers might end up turning on you next."He laughed. "Actually, judging by how eager you were to help her and

After Harley left, Selena glanced at Jonathan."You should get back to work. I'll wait for you outside Juliet's school this afternoon. Maybe we can take her out for dinner?"A flicker of joy crossed Jonathan's eyes. Seeing Selena speak so calmly and warmly, which was so different from her usual cold distance, he immediately thought she had finally softened."Alright," he said with a smile.Jonathan returned to his office, leaving only Selena and Isabella in the lounge.Selena's slender fingers wrapped around the cup on the table. She took a quiet sip before setting it down, her clear, calm eyes landing on Isabella."Isabella, do you remember how we first became friends?"Isabella's lips twitched slightly, but Selena continued before she could answer."We used to live in the same dorm. Everyone there was from different majors. I studied literature, and you were in law. At first, you weren't very friendly to me. Honestly, I even felt like you didn't like me. Later, things changed
