Chapter 6

Author: Faye Murrow
When Selena saw Zachary like this, she actually felt a little flustered.

Maybe it was the heat radiating from his body, or maybe it was just that she hadn't seen a man with that kind of raw, physical presence in a long time.

She took a small step back to steady herself, forcing her voice to stay calm and polite. "Good morning, Mr. Foster."

Juliet greeted him, too. "Morning, Mr. Foster."

Zachary glanced at Selena. She wasn't wearing any makeup, but she still looked striking. Her skin was fair and flawless.

She had on a plain T-shirt and tight jeans—simple clothes, but they showed off her mature figure. The innocent outfit somehow gave off an unintentional sensuality, like a forbidden fruit that made people want to reach out and touch.

Zachary's throat moved slightly, but his expression stayed cool and unreadable. He nodded at them politely.

"Morning. Make yourselves at home."

With that, he turned and walked upstairs.

Juliet went off to find Leona, while Selena followed the butler, Leroy Neal, into the kitchen.

Vince Maxwell, the head chef at Isle Haven, was usually the one in charge, but today, he was helping Selena instead.

He didn't mind at all. After all, he worked for Zachary, and Selena was here because Leona had invited her to cook for the gathering. Their roles didn't conflict.

Actually, from the moment he saw Selena, the normally serious chef had turned a bit red around the ears. Clearly, her looks had thrown him off a little, and the only thing he could do was keep his head down and focus on his work.

Upstairs, Juliet had dragged Leona out of bed after a long struggle.

When they finally came downstairs, they ran into Zachary again.

He was wearing a black dress shirt and slacks, no tie, and the top button was undone, revealing his collarbone. The sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, giving him a relaxed, effortless look. His tall frame made him seem even more composed and striking.

Leona blinked. "Uncle Zach, you're not going to work today?"

His voice was cool and even. "It's the weekend."

"Oh… I just figured a workaholic like you didn't take weekends off. Haven't seen you rest before. Guess you're finally realizing your body's not what it used to be, huh?"

Her teasing earned her a sharp, piercing look from Zachary.

Leona immediately shrank back, gave an awkward laugh, and pulled Juliet downstairs with her. As they walked, she muttered under her breath, "I wasn't wrong. He's 40 already. Of course his body's slowing down…"

Juliet thought back to what Zachary looked like earlier when they arrived, sweaty from a morning workout.

"I don't know, he still seems pretty fit. He works out a lot and looks young for his age."

"Who knows?" Leona scoffed. "Maybe it's all for show."

They reached the dining room just as Selena finished preparing breakfast.

"Leona," Selena said with a warm smile, "Juliet told me you like the samosas I make. I brought a few from home, made some sandwiches too, and some mushroom soup. Just something simple for breakfast."

"Wow, Ms. Jones! I love anything you make!"

Leona eagerly dug in, and Juliet joined her.

Zachary soon entered and sat down at his usual spot. His breakfast—a chicken sandwich and milk—was already waiting.

He glanced at Leona's plate. Her food looked much more appetizing, colorful, and fresh.

The mushroom soup was creamy and smooth, beautifully served in a white bowl. The samosas were golden and crisp, with a bit of spiced potato filling peeking through. Even the sandwiches had wavy edges, cut into bite-sized pieces and arranged on a pretty plate with a small cat drawn in ketchup on the side. It was cute and playful.

He must've been staring for too long, because Leona noticed and instinctively shielded her plate with one hand.

"Uncle Zach, what are you looking at?"

He wasn't eyeing her breakfast, was he? She felt that it was impossible.

Zachary's meals had always been the same plain sandwiches and milk. If he wanted something else, he'd have asked the chef to make it long ago.

So, Leona figured he definitely wasn't interested in her food.

Zachary's expression cooled again, and he quickly finished his breakfast.

When he got up to leave, his gaze brushed briefly toward the kitchen. The woman inside was focused on her work, her graceful figure moving quietly. The sight only lasted a second before he turned away, his steps never slowing.

Soon after, Leona's friends began arriving at Isle Haven.

Some were older students from the high school division, others were classmates, and a few were from families connected to the Fosters.

It wasn't a huge crowd. They were all kids from well-off families, eating, laughing, and chatting like any normal gathering.

The "art viewing" was just an excuse. The real point was networking. Everyone here belonged to the same upper-circle crowd in Harbor City.

The snacks and tea were all prepared by Selena. She also cooked most of the lunch herself. When things got too busy, she shared her recipes with Vince, and he helped with the rest. It turned into a fun little cooking collaboration between them.

Leona didn't make a big deal out of who made the food; everything just happened naturally.

Still, a few guests couldn't help but comment.

"Leona, your chef's got amazing skills. These dishes are all so creative. Did your Uncle Zach hire someone new?"

Others joined in.

"Yeah, the tea was great! Way better than most places."

"I loved the lunch dishes. I've had them before, but they taste totally new here. It's so refreshing!"

Leona smiled and explained, "She's not our regular chef. I hired a special one just for today. She's really good at creative cooking. Everything she makes looks great and tastes even better. If you ever need a private chef for an event, I can recommend her."

"Wow! With praise like that, we've got to try her food too. Let's meet her. I might need someone for a family event next week."

"Sure thing."

Selena soon walked out of the kitchen. She wore a simple white T-shirt tucked into high-waisted jeans, making her look tall and effortlessly stylish. Her face, flushed from the heat of cooking, glowed softly, and her smile had a calm warmth that filled the room.

As she stepped forward, the tall windows were open, and a light breeze caught the loose strands of hair around her face, making her look even more radiant. The movement drew everyone's attention, breaking the silence that had fallen as they stared.

"Wait… Juliet, isn't that your mom? Why would she be cooking here?"

Some of the students recognized her right away. After all, with looks like hers, she wasn't the kind of woman you forgot after seeing once.

Jonathan looked at Isabella."You can help me? You're Selena's best friend. What's in it for you?"Why would she turn on her friend to take his side? It didn't make sense to Jonathan. Unless… Isabella wanted something from him.Seeing the suspicion in his eyes, Isabella slowly leaned closer and brushed her fingertips against the back of his hand. Her voice trembled slightly with a hint of nervousness, and her eyes glimmered with soft charm."Actually, I've had feelings for you for a long time."Jonathan raised an eyebrow, but didn't move."It started even before Selena came into the picture."A faint, knowing smile tugged at Jonathan's lips."Really? Then why didn't you say something back then? If you had told me before Selena showed up, maybe things would've turned out differently."A blush spread across Isabella's cheeks. She looked shy, like a girl confessing her first crush."You were way out of my league back then, so I didn't have the confidence. Soon after, you star

Jonathan sat alone at the bar, drinking one glass after another. A few women came over trying to flirt, but he shooed them away.Normally, if he were in the mood, he might have taken one of them upstairs to blow off some steam. But tonight, he wasn't in the mood for anything. The anger from being played by Selena still burned in his chest, refusing to fade.In Jonathan's mind, Selena had always been a pretty but stupid woman. For years, he had kept her at home like a pampered pet, thinking she would just cook a little, shop for fun, and go to the spa. He never thought she had any real thoughts of her own.He figured her demand for a divorce was nothing more than a burst of emotion, some desperate measure driven by love and disappointment. But what he didn't expect was that Selena would actually go behind his back and take half of his assets.Sure, it was all under Juliet's name now, but it still felt like a huge loss to him."Mr. Campbell."A woman's voice came from behind him,

Jonathan's expression faltered for a moment, guilt flashing briefly in his eyes. But just as quickly, his anger returned, sharper and hotter."So you really still want a divorce?""I've wanted it all along."Selena met his gaze head-on, calm and unwavering. That flawless face of hers, which had seemed so gentle and tender just hours ago, now looked hateful to Jonathan. She was so sweet and soft during the day when she coaxed him into signing away nearly half his assets, but she was now cold and distant.Jonathan realized he had really underestimated her. He clenched his jaw, his anger spilling out. "Hah, well-played! You're really something else."Without another word, he got into his car in a huff and drove off.Selena's eyes lowered slightly. The night air was cool, the streetlights casting a shadow of her thin figure across the pavement. She looked lonely, yet somehow radiant. When Selena got home, her phone lit up with a video call from Juliet. She answered right away, w

Selena didn't respond to Jonathan. She turned her eyes toward the school gate and quickly spotted Juliet. A genuine smile warmed her face.Juliet instantly noticed her mother standing there, looking tall, graceful, and effortlessly beautiful. Even her gentle smile seemed to make everything around her feel lighter."Mom!"Juliet hurried over, her ponytail bouncing with every step. Her face glowed with joy as she threw herself into Selena's soft, familiar embrace.Selena looked at her daughter with affection, took the backpack from Juliet's hand, and passed it to Jonathan. "Is there anything you want to eat? Your dad and I are taking you out for dinner tonight."That was when Juliet finally noticed Jonathan. Her face instantly gave her away. After all, she was never one to hide how she felt. Her smile faded, and she puffed her cheeks slightly."I thought you were too busy."Her tone carried a touch of sarcasm.Selena shot Jonathan a sharp look, kind of like a silent warning. He

After wrapping things up at Campbell Enterprise, Harley returned to his law firm and gave Zachary a call."It's all taken care of. Everything went smoothly. Ms. Jones got exactly what she deserved.""Thanks."Harley raised a brow. "Funny, you're the one thanking me. Shouldn't Ms. Jones be the one saying that? Also, who's covering my legal fees, you or her?""I'll have William handle it.""So you're paying, huh? What are you to Ms. Jones, exactly?"Zachary stayed silent. Harley smirked, but didn't push it. Then, his tone turned playful."You know why things went so smoothly? Guess I underestimated Ms. Jones yesterday. She's not naive at all. Beauty can be a dangerous weapon, and she sure knows how to use it. The way she sweet-talked Jonathan into signing that deal was impressive, to say the least. Let me give you a friendly warning: watch yourself. That sweet smile of hers might end up turning on you next."He laughed. "Actually, judging by how eager you were to help her and

After Harley left, Selena glanced at Jonathan."You should get back to work. I'll wait for you outside Juliet's school this afternoon. Maybe we can take her out for dinner?"A flicker of joy crossed Jonathan's eyes. Seeing Selena speak so calmly and warmly, which was so different from her usual cold distance, he immediately thought she had finally softened."Alright," he said with a smile.Jonathan returned to his office, leaving only Selena and Isabella in the lounge.Selena's slender fingers wrapped around the cup on the table. She took a quiet sip before setting it down, her clear, calm eyes landing on Isabella."Isabella, do you remember how we first became friends?"Isabella's lips twitched slightly, but Selena continued before she could answer."We used to live in the same dorm. Everyone there was from different majors. I studied literature, and you were in law. At first, you weren't very friendly to me. Honestly, I even felt like you didn't like me. Later, things changed
