The soothing music playing in the luxury lounge I went to meet up with my crew did nothing for my nerves. If anything, it highlighted the pain and disappointment tearing me apart.
I don't know who I hated more. Howard… or myself… for being too weak to stop him. In the face of his scheming, my S-class alpha powers became trash. Since my childhood, Howard Rivera has been a very annoying shadow cast over my life. I thought blocking him and taking the hits was acceptable.
At least, it kept Summer nice and warm, letting her live peacefully. I don't want Summer to become another me, forced to grow up before her time. I want her youth, innocence and purity to last for as long as I can stretch it out. Letting her live worry free.
Just this one thing. Why is it so hard to achieve? I already made all the sacrifices, why wasn't my sister spared?
Smoke curled in the room, the smell of whiskey and expensive wine intertwined with pheromones.
Japheth is partially obscured, thanks to the muted lighting. A male omega kneels between his thighs, his head bobbing up and down as he took in Japheth’s engorged length.
The poor thing had tears in his eyes like he was being choked to death.
My nose wrinkled with distaste at the obscenity playing out before me. They might be my friends, but their lifestyle is…something else. Champagne confetti kind of bastards.
“Yo!” Japheth called, half moaning, a glass of maccallan whiskey in his hands. Burning millions on a bottle of rare alcohol. That was exactly what Japheth could do.
“You made it?”
Caelum looked up from where he was sitting, cigarette between his fingers, hair slightly messed up, glasses on, with a laptop open before him. Behind him, an omega girl stood, caressing him, her fingers dipping into his shirt.
I didn't know whether to classify him as a tech genius or a randy.
“MVP, I thought you would be too busy comforting your treasure to care about us.”
I rolled my eyes and grabbed an unopened bottle of Dalmore 64 Trinitas. It might be expensive but it burns real nice. Perhaps, it might numb the fire inside my chest.
I popped it open and reached for a glass.
Japheth moaned, a raw harsh sound that had me wincing. Shameless thing.
Two seconds later, he pushed away the omega who now had a face marred with streaks of cum. Like he always does.
He shoved a card into the boy's palm. The omega appeared humiliated and ashamed, but he accepted the card anyway, with gratitude. Life wasn't easy for omegas.
“Thank you, Alpha. If you need me again, I will be here right away.”
Japheth waved him away like fart, and he scurried out. Watching his haunting beauty twisted something inside me.
If Summer didn't have a capable alpha brother…me…this could have been her fate. It could still happen if she's pushed into that snake pit. I've heard of privileged families who pass around their omega spouses for their friends or investors to sample.
I shuddered and downed four glasses in a row.
“You're drinking that like a fish,” Caelum called out with a hint of worry. “Slow down.”
“Ryker, the semi finals is just a week away. You didn't come to the race track last night.” Japheth pointed a lazy finger at me, his other hand still holding his precious whiskey. “If we don't win the trophy this year, I'm holding you responsible. After all the money I invested in our team…”
Malik who was sitting silently in a corner shot him a warning glare, and he instantly shut up. Malik always had that kind of presence. Mostly invisible but when he makes a move, everyone is forced to listen.
Xander kicked Japheth. “Idiot. Don't you know Ryker’s sister got betrothed yesterday? Will he still be in the mood to drive?”
Caelum smiled awkwardly. “Ryker, just let it go. He's a bit drunk.”
He waved off the omegas and betas hanging over them, and everyone filed out.
The door closed behind the last person. Finally, it was just me and my five shithead friends.
“Ryker, what are we going to do now? The breakout attempt failed. And Howard is more vigilant than ever.” Caelum sighed. “Will you let her marry Zarek?”
I shot him a piercing glare and he raised his hands in surrender.
“The only option now is to switch the bride.” Malik said drily, taking a slow sip of his alcohol. “We got caught tonight because we were ill prepared. Dealing with someone like Howard requires more than just wisdom.”
Japheth lit a cigarette and crossed his legs. “Switch the bride? The reason he's not letting her marry Zarek despite his status is because his previous brides never lived to tell the story. Who are you going to swap her life for? Your sister?”
“I don't have a sister.” Malik drawled, leaning back against the Eames.
Caelum sighed, his gaze distant. “That's a relief really. In a family like ours, being born a girl, or worse an omega, is a curse. You never know whom you will be sold to for a merger.”
An idea occurred to me, a malicious smile forming on my face. Zarek's previous brides died because they were weak and helpless. What if I send him a wolf who is equally as deadly as he was?
I turned to Malik. “Malik, the pheromone modifier you asked me to invest in, has your lab made any progress?”
Malik’s eyes narrowed slightly before he answered. “It's passed the first testing phase. But it's not market-ready.”
“That will do.”
“That look in his eyes.” Japheth chuckled and shook his head. “Our MVP is up to something wild again.”
“I have an idea.” I lowered the glass of whiskey and stood up, then slowly placed my left foot on the table before me.
“And if we execute it well, Zarek will be the one crying.”
RYKERThe room was cold, colder than I remembered, and tidied. It appeared someone had gotten inside to clean it. The room was called mine but never felt like it. Perhaps, it was because deep down, I recognized it for what it was. A giant gilded cage with an air con and soft bed. After a quick trip to the bathroom to wash up, I opened my laptop to continue my work. My mind drifted to Summer, I didn't call her tonight. It was already so late. It must be almost morning in Hong Kong. Let's wait a few more hours. My fingers flew over the key pads, going through the slides and messages I had missed. I need to make a trip to the office, maybe tomorrow. I've stayed out of Zero tech holdings for more than a week now. Even with competent staff driving the boat, I still know nothing beats overseeing things yourself. Howard's move to botch our new chip development meant he had someone working on the inside, and that person needed to be found and flushed out. He must be furious because of the s
RYKERI had barely crossed the threshold when I heard the sound of running feet. My eyes moved towards the stairs while I extended the car keys to a maid waiting by the door. It was Zarek Lachlan. He rushed to me. I tried to draw back, but he was already holding my arm. His face lit up, eyes filled with genuine joy and relief. “You're home.”I scoffed, lips curling. “What? You thought I would run away. You sure know your own nature.”He shook his head, totally missing the sharp insults hidden in my second sentence. “It's not like that. I wasn't thinking you would run away.”The expression on his face let me know even he wasn't so sure of what he was spouting. “If I want to leave, I will just move. No need to sneak around or run like a fugitive. You're not so powerful that I will run away in fear when you approach.” My tone was harsh and grating, but he nodded, totally not minding my attitude. He clutched my arm, the smile on his face made me sneer. He looked like a teenage girl ou
ZAREK 1:00 P.M [Eleven hours earlier] My eyes were fixed on the slide, watching for flaws. Two assistants stood behind me, pens moving in silence. Beside the slide, an omega man stood, giving the presentation. His voice was steady but faint tremors could be seen on his hand. For gatherings such as these, I’ve always tried my best to keep my aura and pheromones restrained to avoid affecting the staff. People outside call me demon, forgetting that the demon they spoke about ran most of the organizations that offered equal compensation and favorable working conditions for everyone in the ABO system. Some omegas earn way higher than alphas in my companies, depending on how well they discharged their duties. Numbers didn’t care about rank. “The fifth slide…” The man’s breath caught, his face going pale as if I was going to eat him alive. His throat worked. Before I could point out my observation or request a correction, my personal phone rang. My brows furrowed. Few people knew thi
RYKER Rage was the first emotion that hit my heart the moment I heard their absurd suggestion. Hot and fast, scorching the inside of my chest. Then embarrassment followed right behind it, crawling up my neck and burning my ears. “You’re really treating me like a gigolo, aren’t you?” I spat the words out, eyes blazing. My voice came out rougher than I meant it to. Japheth chuckled and spread his arms wide, like he was offering me the world. “Come on, what’s so strange about that? He’s your husband for fuck’s sake. If you don’t take advantage of him, is he supposed to give it out to other people? Just ask him to sponsor. His money is now shared marital assets.” “Shared marital assets?” I gasped, half anger, half disgust. His absurd suggestion was biting hard on my nerves, teeth sinking deep. Me, beg Zarek for a favor? That wolf dog would finally find a leverage to keep me shackled, like some lowly consort waiting for scraps. I would never give him that kind of power over me. Not
RYKERMy eyes drifted shut, and I inhaled a ragged breath. I cut the call, and set my phone to silence. A strong stomp to Caelum's foot followed. He howled in pain and turned the other side, doubling over as he shook his leg, still laughing beneath the pain. “For the final time, he's not my husband.” I spat through gritted teeth. “This is just a temporal arrangement till I figure out better ways to keep my sister out of harm's way.”Japheth sneers. Malik laughs. Most of them didn't seem to believe me. “Who knows, you might end up,” Toby gestures with two fingers in the air. “Falling in love.”“Pah!” I almost choked on my drink, then I burst into laughter, slapping my thighs, shoulders quaking with mirth. “Me…” I pointed to myself, lips curled. “Fall in love with Lachlan?”I laughed some more and shook my head. “You really have a taste for bland humour.”The omega hostess brought a plate of the roasted chicken, and pulled a stool beside me and placed it on it. Then she squatted bes
RYKERReluctantly, I began to wash the pots and dishes. I loved my place sparkling clean. Taking out the trash followed, then sorting through my wardrobe. Just my bad habits at work. It didn't need much touch up. Once I was satisfied that everything was perfect. I turned on the air con, kicked off my shoes and dived into my bed. Within seconds, I was knocked out, sleeping with such comfort and happiness that I never felt in Zarek's castle. This was the difference between home and prison. A prison was still a prison, no matter how luxurious it appeared to be. My ringtone was what woke me up. I yawned, hating the idiot that interrupted my heavenly nap. I pulled the blanket over my head and tried to go back to sleep. The caller was persistent, causing the phone to ring over and over. “Which mother fucker is this?” My hand reached for the phone, simultaneously kicking the blanket aside. It was Caelum. I should have known. The idiot was the only one thick headed enough to invade my per

CAELUMMy heart wouldn't stop pounding in my chest at Ryker's crazy plans. I tried to keep my expression blank, and focus on the task at hand. Camera flashes fell against my face, lots of media personalities were covering what they called ‘yet another suicide bride’. We were currently in the mass
RYKERThe contract lay between me and Howard, his gaze fiery. The vein in his temple was twitching violently, as if he would snap at any moment. As for me, I leaned back against the chair, my lips slightly curled, arms crossed. Howard’s fingers steepled, then clenched into fists. I could hear his
By the time I finished, everyone was staring at me like I've grown ten heads. Even Xander, the statue, had his mouth open…incredulous. “Ryker, have you gone crazy? Or am I the one whose brain has been addled.” Caelum gasped. Since I was young, I've never been one to do things as expected. Why sho
