Chapter Seven:

The Pack That Wasn't Dead

I was on the floor when Ronan found me.

Not because I had fallen. Because at some point between reading the seventh entry in my father's journal and the eighth, my legs had simply stopped holding me up, and the floor had seemed like the most honest place to be.

"Selene." Ronan crouched beside me, not touching, not crowding, just present. "When did you last sleep?"

"I don't know." I looked at the journal open across my knees. My father's handwriting cove

Chapter Thirty Eight: Come Alone"No," Kael said.He said it before I had finished explaining what the letter contained, before I had finished reading it aloud to the group on the road, and the single word landed with the particular finality of something that had not been considered and then decided but had been decided before the consideration began."You have not heard the full plan yet," I said."The full plan is that you go alone to a man who has spent forty years eliminating people who knew too much, and in exchange he gives you a journal that is the only irreplaceable piece of evidence in a case that already has substantial documentation." He looked at me steadily. "That is not a plan, that is a trap.""I know it is a trap.""And you are still considering it.""I am considering it because the journal is the only evidence that establishes the timeline of the conspiracy from my father's own hand. Everything else we have can be argued as assembled after the fact. The journal cann

Chapter Thirty Seven: The Thing Crane Left BehindNobody moved for a moment after Kael said it. The word sat in the small room and did the work that words do when they reframe everything around them, the shift that comes from understanding that the shape of the problem has changed while you were looking at the same problem.Crane without a purpose was not the same as Crane with one.Crane with a purpose had spent forty years building something meticulously, sacrificing people he considered expendable to preserve the structure. Crane without a purpose was simply a man who knew exactly how much we had on him and had nothing left to lose by acting recklessly."We need to leave," I said. "Now, all of us."Elara looked at me. "You mean me as well.""I mean especially you." I looked at her steadily. "You just told me that Crane looked at you the way he does when he has already planned for something and then left. Which means he has a plan for a version of events where you do not come wit

Chapter Thirty Six: Twelve MilesThe northern track was exactly what the survey notes had promised and considerably worse than I had imagined, a narrow path through densely grown foothills that required the horses to pick their way forward rather than move at any pace that felt adequate given what was waiting at the end of it.Kael rode ahead, I rode second. Behind me, Ronan, Cole, Dane, and Brann moved in a line that spoke to how much the last several days had changed the shape of what we were doing, because a week ago none of us had been in the same room and now we were riding single file through an unmapped track toward a property that did not officially exist, looking for a person whose name had been kept out of every record for forty years."How much further?" Dane said, from the back of the line."Half a mile," Brann said. "The track curves left and then opens onto a cleared area. The main structure is stone, set back from the clearing.""How do you know that?" I said."I have

Chapter Thirty Five: A Day's RideCole's finger moved across the page the way it always did when he was following something, slow and deliberate, pausing at each entry with the specific patience of someone who knows the answer is there and is not going to rush past it."The payments originate from a private holding registered in the neutral corridor," he said. "Not the messenger house, a separate property, registered under a different name, with different registration year." He looked up. "But the handwriting on the registration is the same as the handwriting on every document we took from the messenger house.""Crane's handwriting," I said."Yes. Which means he owns the property directly. Not through intermediaries, not through a shell." Cole turned the ledger toward me. "The address is in the foothills north of the festival grounds, not four days north, twelve miles."Nobody spoke for a moment.Twelve miles.Aldous Crane, the architect of everything, the man who had ordered my fat

Chapter Thirty Four: The Man Who Walked BackBrann looked nothing like a traitor. That was the first thing I noticed when Dane brought him into the common room, and I noticed it specifically because I had spent nineteen years watching people decide I looked exactly like what they had already decided I was, and fairness required me to extend to him the same caution I had always wanted extended to me. Even now, even knowing what he had done.He was younger than I had realised. The kind of young that gets obscured when someone is competent, when their face settles into a professional expression and holds it long enough that you stop registering the age underneath. He stood in the doorway with his hands open at his sides and his eyes moving around the room in the way of someone assessing it, not for escape, but for the thing they had decided before walking through the gate."Sit down," Kael said.Brann sat.Kael did not sit. He stood at the end of the table with his arms at his sides an

Chapter Thirty Three: What Coran Vale Almost SaidLyra worked on Coran Vale's wound for forty minutes in a room above the festival grounds inn, and for forty minutes nobody spoke except Lyra, who narrated her own work under her breath the way she always did, low and steady, more for the patient than for herself.I stood at the window.Kael stood at the door.We had not discussed what Coran Vale had said on the road, because the moment we arrived at the festival grounds Lyra had taken over and that had been the right call and we both knew it, but the words sat in the room with us the way important things do before anyone has decided how to handle them.Someone in Valdenmere, someone Crane protected above everything else, that thought kept ringing repeatedly in my head. Outside the window, the festival grounds were almost empty now, the last wagons pulling through the main gate with the ordinary pace of ordinary travel. Two days ago this space had held every powerful Alpha in the Nor
