The mall was louder than Iris expected.

Voices overlapped, music spilled from open stores. It felt alive in a way her world rarely did. Her face was calm but her eyes moved more than usual, quietly taking everything in.

Abigail stayed closer to Larry, pointing at random things. It didn’t take much for her to ditch her sister to explore the place with him.

For Jake this was the perfect chance to show Iris a glimpse of normalcy. To impress her with simple gestures.

And he saw just the

Jake turned away before they could notice him.He quickly got into Larry's car and shut the door. For a moment, he simply sat there. His hands clamped around the steering wheel."So he's the one you've always wanted..." The words came out barely above a whisper. His eyes burned, his breath grew weary. He hated that he felt this way. He hated how helpless and weak he felt. Most of all, he hated that he had realized his true feelings for his boss. He loved her.Jake struck the steering wheel out of frustration. The horn blared through the garage. Not far off, Iris immediately turned toward the sound. But the space was already empty.Apollo gently touched her chin, drawing her attention back."Would it bother you if someone saw us?"Iris looked at him for a moment, then shook her head."No." Her voice was calm. "I answer to no one."Apollo smiled gently. "Good."He kissed her forehead before helping her into the car. "We don't want to be late."As they drove away, Jake remained parked in

  • HER BABY   Chapter 34

Abigail collapsed onto the grass after finishing the final lap around the track. Her lungs burned as she heaved out rushed breaths, and her legs felt like jelly. A shadow fell over her. "Need a hand?" She looked up to find Noah offering one. "Thanks." He pulled her to her feet, but she stumbled forward. "Easy." "I'm okay." She steadied herself and stepped out of his grasp, hoping none of her classmates had noticed. "Hey, a new student is transferring in next week," Noah said. "She's nervous about fitting in, so I thought I'd introduce her to you." Abigail smiled faintly. "I doubt she'll want to be friends once she hears all the rumors about me." "She won't." Noah smiled back. "I'll make sure of it." His confidence caught her off guard. After a moment, he rubbed the back of his neck. "So... how's your boyfriend? The guy from the mall?" Abigail looked away, embarrassed. "Larry isn't my boyfriend." "He isn't?" She shook her head. "He works for my sister

  • HER BABY   Chapter 33

Jake froze in the elevator doorway. He knew he should move, yet his heart clung to the sight before him. Iris stood inside, draped in her usual commanding presence with only one bodyguard at her side. He was tempted to pour out his heart, to seek redemption. The issue was his mouth would not open and Iris never looked at him. After a long moment, Jake stepped aside, and the doors slid shut, sealing the space between them. The elevator disappeared. So did his chance to see her…On the weekend, Jake somehow found himself helping Larry and Abigail put together their costumes for a gaming convention. He refused to wear one himself, but at least he had not turned down the invitation."I'm sorry about Iris," Abigail said as they sat with their drinks. "She can be difficult, but I'll talk to her."Jake shook his head. "You don't have to. My internship ends in a couple of months anyway.""You could always work for me instead." Abigail smiled. "I own shares in the company."Jake laughed softly

Charlotte skimmed through the folder in her lap before raising an eyebrow. "And you're sure this will bend the board members to do your bidding?"Baron hummed. "It's minor, but it will shake them."She flipped another page. "Even the seemingly upright ones?"That earned a grin from Baron. "I'm positive."He turned to his most trusted guard. "August here went through quite a mess digging them up."Charlotte leaned back against the sofa. "You've been collecting dirt on the board for years, yet you barely use it.""Patience, sister." Baron took a slow sip. "Power belongs to the person holding everyone else's secrets, not the flashiest one.""Do you intend to use them now?""I intend to take what's rightfully ours, in time."Charlotte closed the file gently. "You really think they'll move against Iris?""They already are." Baron's expression darkened slightly. "The board tolerated her because she was untouchable. But now they'll be more interested in saving themselves." He set his glass d

Iris opened her eyes. Morning sunlight spilled through the curtains.Apollo still slept beside her, one arm loosely around her waist. In sleep, he looked younger somehow. Less dangerous or burdened by devotion. Her gaze lingered on him for a moment before she carefully slipped from the bed.By the time Apollo opened his eyes again, Iris was already standing before the mirror.A crisp charcoal suit hugged her frame perfectly. Then came the hat, wide brimmed, as black as her mood.It was bound to command attention the moment she entered any room.“You’re returning to work already?” Apollo watched quietly from the bed as she adjusted her wrist watch. “You should rest.”“I’ve done enough of that.” Iris glanced at him through the mirror. “Absolutely not.”“Are we not going to have a talk about last night? Your treatment...”“Later, I don’t plan on running late.” Iris avoided his eyes.Apollo sat up slowly. “You look tired.”“I look powerful. There is a difference. I’m going down for breakf

Abigail was just about to beat Larry for the fifth time in a row when Jake’s call came through. “You cheated,” Larry said, staring at the racing screen in horror. “I absolutely did not.” Abi laughed, gripping the controller tighter. “You button mashed with criminal intent.” “Sounds like a skill issue to me.” Abi giggled. Larry gasped dramatically as he pressed the phone on his ear. But then the excitement died down when Jake said to meet at the carpark. Abi glanced at him. “Did something happen?” “We’re going home.” Larry scratched his brow. Meeting Iris and Jake, it was easy to tell that something happened. The ride back was painfully quiet. Abi sat in the backseat beside Iris, occasionally stealing glances at her sister. Iris looked completely unbothered, calmly scrolling through her phone. Jake’s hands tightened around the steering wheel every few minutes. Larry noticed it. So did Abigail. The moment they stepped into the house, an arguement unfolded. “D
