Poison Wrapped in Silk:

The rest of the day passed like a held breath.

Classes at Blackthorn were nothing like my old school.

Here, teachers didn't just teach.

They watched.

Every question felt like a test within a test. Every answer assessed not just for correctness but for something deeper. Something harder to name.

What kind of mind do you have?

How do you think?

What are you hiding?

I kept my answers careful. Intelligent enough to not seem invisible. Controlled enough to not seem threatening.

I was good at becoming exactly what a room needed me to be.

Daniel had always said that about me.

You're a chameleon, Ava. You could walk into any world and belong.

I used to think it was a compliment.

Sitting in a classroom at Blackthorn Academy, surrounded by the children of powerful dangerous people, I finally understood what he really meant.

It was a warning.

Advanced Literature was last period.

I walked in and found a seat near the middle.

Safe. Unassuming.

The teacher, a thin pale man named Professor Aldric, was writing on the board when the door opened behind me.

I didn't need to look up to know who it was.

The room told me.

That familiar dimming.

That shift in the air.

Vivienne sat down.

Directly beside me.

Every seat in the room and she chose the one that shared an armrest with mine.

I stared at my notebook.

She's doing this deliberately.

Let her.

Professor Aldric began talking about unreliable narrators.

The irony was almost too much.

I uncapped my pen and wrote the date at the top of a clean page.

"You're left-handed."

Her voice was barely above a murmur. Low enough that only I could hear.

I didn't look at her. "Observant."

"It's a useful quality." A pause. "Your brother was right-handed."

My pen stopped moving.

Every muscle in my body went rigid.

I forced myself to keep breathing. Forced my hand to start writing again.

"You knew him well enough to notice that?" I kept my voice perfectly light.

"I noticed everything about Daniel." Another pause, longer this time. Loaded with something I couldn't read. "He was worth noticing."

I finally turned my head.

She was already looking at me.

Up close like this she was almost unbearable.

Not in a way I had words for yet.

Just unbearable.

Her expression was unreadable as always but her eyes were doing something different. Something that looked almost, dangerously, like grief.

"What exactly was he to you?" I asked quietly.

The grief if that's what it was vanished.

The wall came back up.

"A student I knew," she said simply.

"You came to his funeral."

"I come to many things."

"You watched them lower his coffin like" I stopped myself.

Like it meant something to you.

Like you were saying goodbye.

Like you were sorry.

I hadn't meant to say that much.

Vivienne was watching me carefully now.

"Like what?" she asked softly.

Professor Aldric's voice continued at the front of the room, oblivious.

"Like you knew something the rest of us didn't," I finished.

Silence stretched between us.

Vivienne turned back to the front of the class.

"Everyone at Blackthorn knows things the rest of the world doesn't," she said quietly. "That's rather the point of this place."

She opened her own notebook.

Conversation over.

Except it wasn't.

Because twenty seconds later, without looking at me, she slid a folded piece of paper across the desk.

I stared at it.

Opened it under the desk where no one could see.

Four words.

Stop asking about him.

I looked at her.

She was writing notes, face forward, expression serene.

I wrote back.

Or what?

Slid it back.

Waited.

She read it. I saw her eyes drop for exactly one second.

Then she wrote something and returned it.

Or I won't be able to protect you.

I read it twice.

Protect me.

Not stop you. Not expose you.

Protect.

I looked at the side of her face.

The sharp elegant line of her jaw.

The careful controlled stillness of her.

What are you? I thought.

What are you really?

After class she was gone before I could speak.

No goodbye. No glance back.

Like I had imagined the entire thing.

I stood in the emptying classroom holding that small folded note and felt the ground shifting slightly under my feet.

This wasn't how it was supposed to go.

She was supposed to be simple.

Cruel. Cold. Guilty.

A villain I could dismantle without losing sleep.

Instead she was this.

Layered and guarded and saying things that didn't fit the story I'd built around her.

Stop it, I told myself sharply.

This is exactly what she wants.

She is good at this.

Being compelling is her weapon.

I tucked the note into my blazer pocket, next to Daniel's notebook.

Two pieces of paper.

Both connected to the same person.

Both pulling me in directions I wasn't ready for.

That evening I sat on the floor of my dorm room with Daniel's notebook spread open in my lap.

I had read it a hundred times.

But now I read it differently.

Looking for her.

Looking for Vivienne between the lines.

And I found her.

Not by name.

By a letter.

V.

V knows about the third floor.

V told me to stop digging. I can't.

V looked at me today like she was afraid. I've never seen her afraid before. It changed something.

I think V is trapped too.

I sat very still.

I think V is trapped too.

My brother had written those words three weeks before he died.

I had read them before.

But I had read them as evidence.

V trapped him. V controlled him. V destroyed him.

Now I read them differently.

Trapped too.

Not trapping.

Too.

Like they were both caught inside something neither of them had built.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown Number.

I answered it this time.

Held the phone to my ear without speaking.

Silence on the other end.

Then a voice. Low. Distorted. Like it was being scrambled deliberately.

"You're reading his notebook."

I stood up slowly. "Who are you?"

"Someone who watched Daniel make every mistake you're currently making."

"Tell me your name.

"Names are dangerous here."

"Then tell me something useful."

A pause.

"Vivienne didn't kill your brother." The voice was careful. Precise. "But she knows who did. And she is absolutely terrified of them."

My heart was hammering.

"Then why won't she say anything?"

"Because the last person she told”

 Another pause.

Heavier this time. "Didn't survive the conversation."

The line went dead.

I stood in the middle of my dark dorm room.

Phone pressed to my chest.

Daniel's notebook on the floor.

And Vivienne's four words burning a hole through my blazer pocket.

I won't be able to protect you.

Not a threat.

A confession.

She was scared.

And somehow that scared me more than anything else.

I almost missed it.

I was getting ready for bed when I noticed the envelope.

Slipped under my door.

No name on the front.

Inside: a single photograph.

Old. Printed on thick paper like it had come from an actual camera, not a phone.

It showed two girls.

Standing together in what looked like the Blackthorn chapel.

One girl I didn't recognize.

Dark hair. Young. Maybe fifteen or sixteen. Her face turned slightly away from the camera.

The other girl

I brought the photograph closer to the light.

My breath stopped.

The other girl was Vivienne.

Younger. Softer somehow. Before whatever had happened to her had happened.

She was holding the other girl's hand.

And she was crying.

I had not thought Vivienne Moreau capable of tears.

On the back of the photograph, written in red ink:

She lost someone too.

Ask her about Sophia.

I stared at the name.

Sophia.

Someone had loved Vivienne once.

Someone she had lost.

I sat on the edge of my bed with the photograph in both hands and felt something deeply inconvenient happen inside my chest.

Something that had no business being there.

Something that felt uncomfortably like understanding.

Stop it, I told myself again.

But it was getting harder to listen.
