Elara’s pov

---

After taking a shower, I slipped into my nightgown and prepared myself for bed.

I moved toward the bed and slowly lay down, pulling the covers over myself.

The night was quiet.

A gentle breeze drifted through the slightly opened window, causing the curtains to sway softly. The insects chirped somewhere outside, their distant sounds blending with the peaceful rhythm of the night.

Everything around me was peaceful.

Yet inside my head, it was a storm.

There was no peace.

My thoughts were at war with one another.

I stared blankly at the ceiling, desperately trying to force myself to sleep, but my mind kept drifting back to the awkward moment I had shared with Cassian earlier.

The memory refused to disappear.

The way his eyes had looked at me.

The strange sensation that had coursed through me when he held me.

And the way when I felt his body on mone brought so many strange thoughts into my head that I didn't know why

I squeezed my eyes shut.

Why was I thinking about it so much?

It had been nothing.

Just a hug.

A simple, innocent hug between two people who had known each other for years.

So why did it feel like something more?

I turned onto my side.

Then tossed and turned on he bed.

But no matter how many times I changed positions, I couldn't fall asleep.

My thoughts continued spiraling until I found myself staring into the darkness, questioning a feeling I didn't even understand.

Eventually, exhaustion overcame me.

---

I woke up the next morning to the melodious chirping of birds outside my window.

The scent of morning dew lingered in the cool air, while warm rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains and fell across my face, gradually pulling me from my sleep.

I blinked several times before sitting up.

My body felt heavy.

I had barely slept throughout the night, and I was still weak.

But I couldn't afford to stay in bed.

There was too much to do.

With Kieran's succession only days away, I needed to help with the preparations as much as I could.

I reluctantly dragged myself out of bed, freshened up, and got dressed before making my way to the Thorne Mansion.

---

When I arrived at the mansion, I approached one of the staff members.

“Excuse me. Do you know where I can find Kieran?”

“Alpha Kieran is upstairs in his room,” the staff member replied.

I paused.

Alpha Kieran.

It still felt strange hearing him addressed that way.

But it wasn't exactly surprising.

The succession ceremony was drawing closer, and the way people addressed him was naturally beginning to change in preparation for his new position.

Soon, he wouldn't simply be Kieran.

He would be the Alpha of the Thorne Pack.

And I would have to get used to it.

I thanked the staff member before making my way upstairs.

As I walked along the corridor toward Kieran's room, something caught my attention.

A shadow.

I slowed my steps.

One of the doors was slightly opened, and a figure moved inside.

Curiosity got the better of me.

I glanced through the opening.

And froze.

Cassian.

My breath caught in my throat.

He stood inside the room with nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist, his skin still glistening with droplets of water as though he had only just stepped out of the shower.

His dark hair was damp and messy, several strands falling carelessly across his forehead.

My eyes moved involuntarily over him before I could stop myself.

His broad shoulders.

His defined chest.

The contours of his physique accentuated by the remaining droplets of water on his skin.

I immediately realized I had been staring.

My cheeks grew warm.

I quickly looked away.

Why was I even looking at him?

This was Cassian.

Kieran's younger brother.

Someone I had grown up with.

Someone I had no business looking at like this.

I took a quiet breath and tried to compose myself.

Perhaps I should simply walk away.

That would be the sensible thing to do.

But for some inexplicable reason, my feet remained rooted to the floor.

And then—

“Are you planning on standing there all morning?”

My heart nearly stopped.

My eyes widened.

Cassian was looking directly at me.

He had noticed me.

I quickly left there and made my way to Kieran's room.

I reached Kierans room.

I opened the doer and there he was.

Laying so peacefully.

finally having time to rest after all the stress on him this past few weeks

I quietly walked over to him and leaned down carefully giving him a kiss on the head.

I didn't want to disturb him because he needed the rest.

but just as I was about to leave.

I felt a hand grab me back.

“And why are you leaving? “

Kieran had woken up and grabbed me pulling me closer to his chest.

ELARA POV *** I stood before my bedroom mirror, fixing the silver necklace around my throat while my mind wandered back to the meeting we'd had earlier that afternoon. “Whats going to happen to us?”I thought to myself. Alpha Lucian thorne had called for a pack meeting and told us he would be stepping down as Alpha and giving the Alpha title to Kieran -the heir to the Thorne Pack. And that the Alpha succession will be taken place in 3 weeks. I should have been excited. I was, mostly but the thought of how things will be when Kieran becomes Alpha Left me filled with thoughts which made me feel uneasy and scared at the same time. -Kieran and I have known each other since we were young wolf cubs and after the death of his mother we grew closer and devel

  • HIS BROTHER, MY MATE   Chapter 2: Something about her

Cassian pov **** I woke to the incessant ringing of my phone, the shrill sound cutting through the remnants of sleep that still clung to my mind. With a reluctant groan, I rolled over and reached blindly toward the bedside table, searching for the device. My fingers finally wrapped around it. I glanced at the screen. “Cassian.” The moment I heard my father’s voice, whatever traces of drowsiness remained vanished. I immediately sat upright, my brows drawing together as I listened. “The succession ceremony for your brother is scheduled to take place in three weeks. You are expected to return to the estate by tomorrow to begin preparations. As the younger son of the Alpha, you will assume the position of your brother’s right hand.” My jaw tightened. Those words landed with the weight of a hammer against my skull. Of all the things I had wanted to hear that morning, this was certainly nowhere near the list. I had never possessed the slightest interest in pack pol

  • HIS BROTHER, MY MATE   Chapter 3: With greater power comes greater responsibilities

Kieran pov **** Since Father announced my succession, my life had changed drastically, and I hadn’t even been officially appointed as Alpha yet. Elara and I had spent less and less time together with each passing day. The council had been breathing down my neck constantly, and my responsibilities seemed to multiply by the hour. There was always another meeting. Another decision to make. Another matter demanding my attention. And somehow, amidst all of it, Elara was slowly becoming the one thing I barely had time for. I hated it. I hated that my responsibilities were beginning to interfere with the relationship I had spent years building with her. But there was little I could do about it. My father had told me that Cassian would be returning today and that he would assume the position of Beta and become my new right hand. Perhaps his return would relieve some of the burden on my shoulders. At least, I hoped it would. Still, I wasn’t entirely certain Cassia

  • HIS BROTHER, MY MATE   Chapter 5: He is my mate

Elara pov: **** The next day. I was alone in my room, yet my thoughts were anything but quiet. They drifted back to the embarrassing realization that Cassian had caught me staring at him while he was half-naked. My cheeks flushed at the mere memory. For some inexplicable reason, I couldn’t stop thinking about how handsome he had looked in that moment—or how perfectly defined his physique had been. And that was the part that embarrassed me the most. Because in those few seconds, my mind had wandered into thoughts it had no business entertaining. The moment Cassian caught me staring, I had been rendered completely breathless. My hands trembled. My heartbeat accelerated. And a wave of embarrassment washed over me. I knew then that I had crossed a line. Not an imaginary one. A real one. I knew exactly what I had been doing when I stood there staring at him. And that realization made me feel even worse. I didn’t know if I could face him again, let alone

  • HIS BROTHER, MY MATE   Chapter 6: Fated

CASSIAN'S POV **** I had just stepped out of the shower. I wrapped a towel around my waist and used another to dry the remaining droplets of water from my skin. As I looked down patting myself dry, something caught my attention. A shadow. Someone was peeking through the slightly opened door. I lifted my head up. Elara. A smile tugged at the corner of my lips. she hadn't noticed I had seen her by the door. Deciding to ease the awkwardness, I spoke. "Are you planning on standing there all morning?" Before I could say another word, she turned around and bolted down the hallway. I couldn't help but chuckle. She reminded me of a child who had just been caught doing something wrong. Shaking my head with an amused smile, I returned my attention to drying myself and thought nothing more of it. --- The following day, after spending nearly three weeks confined to the mansion, I was beginning to feel suffocated. The endless meetings. The responsibilities.
