Lily's Pov

Margaret's funeral was beautiful and cold, exactly like every other event in the Hunt family calendar.

Hundreds of mourners filled the church, business partners and society friends who'd probably never sat with her the way I had. I stood beside Alexander in black, playing the grieving widow's daughter-in-law, while my own grief for her felt like the only honest thing in the room.

Cassandra arrived in a black dress that looked more like a red carpet gown than mourning wear. She went straight to Alexander's side, resting a hand on his arm, whispering something that made his shoulders loosen slightly.

I stood two feet away and might as well have been invisible.

"You must be devastated," Cassandra said to him, loud enough for the surrounding guests to hear. "I'm here. Whatever you need."

Alexander let her hand stay on his arm through the entire service. Not once did he reach for mine.

James Hunt approached me briefly near the flowers, his voice a low, cruel murmur only I could hear. "My mother's death changes nothing for you, girl. Don't get comfortable."

I didn't answer him. I had learned that silence was safer than words in that family.

After the burial, guests gathered at the mansion. I slipped away from the noise, needing air, needing space from the performance of a marriage that had never been real.

I passed Alexander's study and heard his voice, low and familiar, along with Cassandra's laugh.

I should have kept walking. Instead I stopped outside the half-open door.

"With Grandmother gone, there's no reason to keep pretending," Cassandra was saying. "We can finally plan our real wedding. Something grand. Something that actually means something."

"Soon," Alexander said. "Once the contract officially ends, Lily disappears and we announce our engagement."

"God, I thought this would never end. Two years of pretending some pathetic little nobody actually mattered to you."

Alexander laughed. Actually laughed. "She was convenient. Grandmother adored her, and that's all that mattered. Lily served her purpose."

Every word landed like a blow. Convenient. Pathetic. Nobody.

I backed away before they could see me, my hand pressed hard against my mouth to keep from making a sound, my other hand pressed against my stomach where his child grew, unknown and unwanted.

I called Rachel from the guest bathroom, my voice shaking so badly I could barely form words.

"Rachel, I need to leave. Tonight. Can you help me?"

"Lily, what happened? You're scaring me."

"Everything. I'll explain when I see you. Please, Rachel."

"I'm already grabbing my keys. Meet me two blocks from the penthouse in an hour."

That night, after everyone left, I found the divorce papers Alexander's lawyer had prepared months ago, sitting untouched in his office drawer. My signature was the only one missing.

My hand shook as I picked up the pen, but I made myself steady it. I signed my name for the second time in that penthouse, the first time selling myself into this marriage, the second time buying myself out of it.

I packed one suitcase, the same one I'd arrived with, and left the designer clothes and the diamond ring hanging in the closet. I kept only Margaret's wedding band, the one piece of that family that had ever been given to me with real love.

Rachel was waiting two blocks away in her car when I walked out of that glass tower for the last time, my heart pounding with equal parts terror and relief.

"Where to?" she asked as I climbed in.

"Anywhere he isn't." I looked back once at the building that had held two years of my life. "Somewhere he'll never find me."

I didn't tell her about the baby yet. I didn't tell anyone.

Some secrets you carry alone, at least for a little while, until you're strong enough to say them out loud.

As Rachel pulled away from the curb, my phone buzzed one last time. Alexander.

"Where are you? Dinner with the lawyers starts soon."

I turned my phone off without answering, and somewhere behind us, a life I never wanted grew smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror.

We drove through the night, mostly in silence, the highway lights blurring past like the pieces of a life I was leaving behind for good.

"You know he'll come looking, once he realizes what's missing," Rachel said somewhere around three in the morning, her eyes on the road.

"He won't look for me. He never has before."

"That was before he had a reason to." She glanced at me briefly. "A baby changes things, Lily, even for men like Alexander Hunt."

"He'll never know about the baby. That's the whole point of leaving now, before I start showing, before there's any way for him to guess."

Rachel didn't argue, though her silence told me she wasn't entirely convinced I'd be able to keep that secret forever.

By the time the sun rose over unfamiliar hills, I had already started rehearsing the story I would tell everyone from now on. A quiet widow, recently divorced, starting fresh somewhere no one asked too many questions.

I touched Margaret's ring, now hanging from a chain around my neck, hidden beneath my shirt where no one could see it and demand I explain its meaning.

"Thank you for this," I told Rachel as the first road sign for the coastal town appeared. "For everything."

"That's what best friends are for." She reached over and squeezed my hand. "New chapter, Lily. A real one this time. One you get to write yourself."

I wanted so badly to believe her.

Alexander's PovElena arrived at the hospital within the hour, summoned by a call I made with hands still trembling from David's revelation. She looked older suddenly, the weight of years of silence visible in every line of her face as she sat across from David and me in a private consultation room."I need to tell you both something I should have said months ago," she began, twisting her hands in her lap. "I saw something that night. The night everyone's been calling a mistake.""Tell us everything, Elena. Please.""I was doing my final rounds before bed. I saw Mr. Chen in the kitchen around eleven, looking unsteady, holding a glass of water Cassandra had just handed him. She left immediately after, and a few minutes later, I saw him head toward the guest wing instead of his usual office, walking like a man who'd had far too much to drink, though I know now he hadn't been drinking at all."David's jaw tightened. "The guest wing. That's near Lily's room.""I assumed he was simply conf

Not MineAlexander's PovDr. Mitchell closed the door behind her, her voice gentle but direct in the way I imagined she delivered every piece of devastating medical news."Given the complications and the legal questions around your marriage, we ran paternity testing automatically as part of the delivery protocol. I need you both to prepare yourselves for what I'm about to say."Lily's hand tightened around mine. "Just tell us.""Alexander isn't the father." Dr. Mitchell let that settle before continuing. "The results are conclusive. The baby's biological father is David Chen."The room went silent except for the steady beep of hospital monitors. I stared at Dr. Mitchell, certain I'd misheard her."That's impossible," I said. "David wasn't even at the penthouse that night.""I can only report the results, Mr. Hunt. I'd recommend speaking with Mr. Chen directly about the circumstances."Lily's face had gone bone white against the hospital pillow. "I don't understand. I thought it was yo

Alexander's PovThe next four hours blurred into a single unbearable stretch of fluorescent lights and hushed medical voices.Dr. Sarah Mitchell emerged once, briefly, her scrubs stained and her face tight with concentration. "She's stable for now. The baby's heart rate dropped twice, but we've got it steady. I need you all to wait here.""Can I see her?""Not yet. Give us time to make sure she's out of danger first."I sat beside Rachel in the waiting room, my hands shaking in a way I couldn't control no matter how hard I tried."I shouldn't have told her like that," Rachel said quietly, guilt written across every line of her face. "I panicked. I thought she deserved to know before it came out some other way, but I should have waited. I should have found a gentler way.""This isn't your fault, Rachel.""Isn't it? I've spent months protecting her, and the moment it mattered most, I broke her instead."David appeared with coffee none of us touched, sitting heavily beside me. "Any word?

Alexander's PovI liquidated forty million dollars in assets within thirty-six hours, moving faster than I had for any business deal in my entire career.David watched me sign the final transfer with a grim expression. "You realize this puts serious pressure on the company's liquidity right before the shareholder meeting.""Let them worry about liquidity. I'm worried about Sophie getting home safely from school."We arranged the exchange at an abandoned warehouse near the docks, per Vincent's instructions, with two undercover officers David had quietly brought in through a contact from his college roommate, now a detective with the fraud division.Vincent arrived exactly on time, flanked by two men I didn't recognize, his smile as oily as I remembered from Lily's old stories about him."Mr. Hunt. Punctual. I respect that in a man.""The money's confirmed in the account. We're done here.""Almost done." Vincent's eyes glittered with something that made my skin crawl. "You know, I alway

Alexander's PovDavid arrived at my apartment the next evening looking like he hadn't slept in days, a thick folder clutched against his chest."Sit down," he said. "You're going to need to.""Just tell me.""Cassandra Vale isn't her real name. Her birth name is Cassandra Shaw." David let that settle before continuing. "She's Vincent Shaw's niece, Alexander. Placed inside Hunt Corporation five years ago, specifically to work her way into your life and destroy the company from the inside."The room tilted slightly around me. "Why? What does Vincent Shaw have against my family?""Your father, apparently, ruined more than just Robert Morgan over the years. Vincent worked for James decades ago, doing exactly the kind of dirty work that bankrupted Lily's father. James cut him loose eventually, used him up and discarded him without a second thought, the same way he does with everyone." David's expression darkened. "Vincent spent years planning revenge. Placing his niece close to you was the

There's something you need to see, and I've been too afraid to show anyone until now."I drove through the dark with Vincent's threat still burning in my pocket, my mind racing through every possible way to protect Lily and Sophie before dawn.Elena met me in the security office, a small room off the kitchen I hadn't visited in years. She pulled up old footage on the ancient monitor, her hands trembling slightly."I saved this after your grandmother passed. I didn't know what it meant then. I think I do now."The grainy footage showed Cassandra in Margaret's room late at night, carefully measuring something into a small cup beside the water pitcher, checking over her shoulder before slipping out."That's from three weeks before your grandmother's heart failed completely," Elena said quietly.
