Alicia stared at her reflection, still holding the mirror with both hands. The woman looking back at her didn’t feel like a stranger, or maybe not, but she wasn’t Alicia King either. Not the quiet one, not the one Lucas married out of pressure. This face was spotless, fresh, almost too perfect, like someone else’s life had been laid over hers.

She blinked slowly, unsure of what she felt. Confused? Shocked? Grateful?

Lucas… what would he do if he saw her now? Would he even recognize her? Would his heart skip a beat? Or would he just admire her like any other beautiful woman passing by?

And Maya? Her sweet daughter with sleepy eyes and curly hair. Would she know her mother? Or would she pull away, scared by this new face, and run away?

Alicia touched her cheek softly. It didn’t even feel real.

Then there was Amaya, her best friend. Her voice had been the last thing Alicia thought about before everything went dark. She’d called her name, screamed, maybe asked thousands of questions. And Becky…

A chill ran through her body.

The memory of that night was still afresh, but one thing was clear: Becky had pushed her, her sister. If someone had told her that Becky could do something like that, she would’ve defended her with her life. But now?

The truth was sharper than any pain she had felt for all these years.

The doctor’s voice pulled her back. “Do you feel any discomfort?”

She blinked, lowering the mirror. “Just… a slight headache.”

She nodded. “It’s from the medication. It’ll pass.”

She scribbled something on his clipboard, then exchanged a glance with the nurse. “We’ll give you some privacy. Press the button if you need anything.”

They stepped out, leaving the room quiet again.

Alicia looked down at her lap, then turned to Captain Smith, who stood near her, arms behind his back.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

He turned.

“Thank you,” she said again, this time louder, clearer.

He smiled, a short nod following. “You don’t need to thank me. Just get better.”

He reached into his coat pocket and brought out a sleek smartphone. “My number’s already in there. You’ll need it. Press the bell if you feel any slight discomfort.”

She took it, her fingers still a little shaky, because the man’s presence had an intimidating aura.

“How long… have I been gone?”

He finally sat on the chair. “Almost four months. Since the night I found you floating near the river banks. You were barely alive. Unconscious for weeks. The doctors in Miami called me the moment you woke up. I flew down straight away, I was gone on a duty trip.”

Alicia didn’t know what to say.

He stood. “Get some rest. The nurses will take care of you. I’ll come by later.”

And with that, he walked out.

She looked back at the mirror.

The woman staring back at her… had a lot to settle.

****************************

Lucas stepped into his house, dropping his keys on the living room table. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, and the tiredness in his eyes showed. He loosened his tie as he spotted the nanny still sitting in the living room, Maya asleep beside her.

“It’s past your closing time,” he said, walking in.

The nanny stood quickly. “I didn’t want to leave Maya alone. She’s been a little fussy since this afternoon.”

He nodded. “Where’s Becky?”

“She packed up earlier and left. Took her luggage and didn’t say much.”

Lucas frowned, pulling out his phone. He dialed Becky’s number, but it didn’t go through.

“Alright. Thanks. I’ll take it from here.”

She grabbed her bag and left quietly.

Lucas picked up his daughter and carried her upstairs to her room. The light was dim, her blanket was pulled halfway across the bed.

He placed her down gently, tucking the edges like Alicia used to do.

As he turned to leave, Maya’s soft voice stopped him.

“Daddy?”

He turned. “Yes, sweetheart?”

“When is Mommy coming back?” she asked, her little fingers hugging her bunny tighter. “Nobody reads bedtime stories anymore, I miss mummy.”

He didn’t know the best answer to give her. He leaned down and kissed her forehead.

“Soon,” he said. “She’ll be back soon.”

******************

The next morning, Lucas stood in front of Becky’s apartment door. He didn’t knock. He used the spare key she once gave him and walked in.

She was already dressed up.

Red short gown, makeup done, legs crossed as she sat on the couch, sipping a hot chocolate beverage like she was hosting a mini party.

“I knew you’d come,” she said with a smile, standing up slowly, expecting you to come earlier than now, but it's fine, the most important thing is that you are here, finally..

Lucas looked around. “Why did you leave Maya with the nanny?”

Becky took another sip. “She’s not a baby. Besides, I needed space.”

“Space? You left a four-year-old with someone who has her own family waiting for her.”

Becky’s voice didn’t waver. “I’m leaving for Mexico tomorrow, my luggage is already packed.”

Lucas blinked. “What?”

She touched her stomach gently. “I can’t be a secret anymore, tired of being your mistress, the one who warms your bed. I won’t raise this child in shame. I’ll tell her I tried, but the father is just a coward.”

“Becky, don’t do this.”

“I will stay… if you marry me.”

Lucas stared at her.

“Engage me first. Transfer something into my account. I’ll pick my ring. Then we’ll plan our wedding. Public, and loud.”

Lucas rubbed his face. “It hasn’t even been six months since Alicia’s burial. People will talk.”

“Let them, besides not so many persons knew she was your wife.”

He sighed. “Fine.”

He pulled out his phone and made the transfer. As soon as the alert hit her phone, she smiled.

He didn’t stay long.

******************************

The next morning, Alicia sat upright in her bed, dressed in her hospital gown. Her hands kept going to the mirror beside her, touching her nose, her cheekbones, her lips. She pinched softly, like trying to see if it was real; she was looking too beautiful to be true, maybe a mermaid.

Her fingers brushed over the smartphone Captain Smith gave her. She opened it, needing something to distract herself.

She scrolled slowly through the feed.

Then she stopped.

Becky’s face filled the screen, all smiles, glowing like she hadn’t thrown her sister into the ocean.

But it wasn’t the smile that made Alicia’s heart sink.

It was the ring.

And the caption:

“Engaged to the love of my life.”

She was about to scroll past fast until she saw the name tag.

Lucas David.

The phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor without a warning.

Now, more than seven people were looking at her. Her brain refused to come up with a lie, and just then someone spoke from behind.“You know why I can’t deal with people dealing with insecurity? They don’t know where to put a stop. Well, if you must know, Miss Daniella and I had a long series of meetings that took us outside the hotel. It rained yesterday, very late at night, and before we could gather, it was too late. I couldn’t endanger her life, not when the storm was so heavy. I booked a hotel room for her and booked mine. I only brought her back today. If you still want proof, I can show you.”Alicia didn’t know why he saved her, but she was grateful to Larry. Just then, Larry saw Bryan walk inside, and he said to him,“You have to win your girlfriend’s trust, so she doesn’t go about pointing fingers at innocent people.”Olivia couldn’t bring her eyes up to look at anybody. She heard the murmurs from people. Lucas sighed in relief and said,“Satisfied? You owe her an apology.”B

The woman repeated the “No” again. Her lips trembled, almost as if she heard Zoe’s mind screaming at her. She looked helpless, her hands shaking as she tried to reach for her daughter.“I can explain, Zoe.”“Sure,” Zoe said bitterly. “You will give me a serious explanation. Every single detail. You think you can just say no to me and that ends it? You'd better start talking. You know I’m impatient… mum. If I should even still call you that.”Her mother’s shoulders slumped. Tears slid down her face, and her voice quivered as she began.“After your father and I got married, we waited for four years. Four whole years, but no child came. We went for a series of tests, and the doctor confirmed I could never carry a child in my womb. Uterine factor infection, that’s what he called it. It broke me. For weeks, for years, I was empty. I cried myself to sleep every night. Then… then I confided in a friend of mine. She was a nurse. I told her everything.” She paused, wiped her wet face, and forc

“What are you saying, Diego? I understand that we look very much alike, more like doppelgangers, but we aren’t even related. For the record, I have no siblings. So enough of that. Now I can’t even visit my boyfriend, all because of one stupid lie that keeps growing.” Zoe’s voice cracked as she tried to stay calm. The food box she was packing remained half open, untouched. It felt useless now, risky even. Hunter would have to be the one to come over instead, she thought.Diego was still looking at her. “You should know me by now. I don’t say things I’m not sure of. Let’s do it this way. Go home to your mum. The pregnancy isn’t very obvious yet; the bump is still small. Ask her to be honest with you. If she still stands her ground, then demand a DNA test. I’ll take it from there. Trust me, she has a lot of explanations to give you. Even I’m eager to hear her story.”Zoe stood, staring at him. There was no joking in his eyes. Diego had that serious tone he rarely used, the kind that sa

Now all eyes were on Lucas, apart from Alicia, who was quietly looking at the water. It seemed like the person Lucas claimed to be in a relationship with wasn't her. Lucas tried to fix his words quickly."I mean, she will soon be in a relationship with me, after my divorce proceeds. You don't have to get your son involved, ma."He cursed himself inwardly. He just sounded like a fool, and the look on the woman’s face told him exactly that.Bryan stood up, brushing off the awkward silence."Happy Anniversary once more, Aunt and Uncle. I’ll be inside now. Need to catch some sleep. Goodnight, everyone."“I will follow my boyfriend inside. Goodnight.”Olivia said and stood up. Now inside the room, Bryan was trying to use his laptop, pretending to be busy. But it wasn't working. His mind wasn’t focused. He wished he could just go straight to Alicia and ask her everything. Was she not supposed to wait for him for six whole months? What was she even doing with that guy? Yes, maybe it was self

"A date. Just wow..." Bryan said to himself. He wanted nothing more than to walk up there, drag her by the hand, and take her away. But he couldn’t. He saw it all. Alicia gladly accepted the invite. Larry left politely after collecting her contact, still wearing that casual smile. Bryan clenched his fist. This wasn't what he wanted to see. Then, out of nowhere, Lucas appeared beside Alicia."Can we talk? Outside," he said."Sure," Alicia replied, walking alongside him out of the conference hall.Once they were outside, Lucas looked around to make sure no one was watching or listening. Then he faced her."Daniella, I know you have the right to associate with anyone here. But remember this: you are mine. And I’m about to change the face of your company. I saw you with that man, and you were all smiley. Those smiles are for me, not him."He paused, breathing harder now."I’m sorry if I raised my voice. I just… I can't stand seeing you getting all love-dovey with another man."Alicia fol

  • HIS MOST WANTED KARMA   CHAPTER 87

“Okay, thank you for being honest.”Just like that, Sonia left his room. Captain Smith didn’t want to look at where she had just left. Loving her would only cause her pain, likely exposing her to danger. It was better this way. He blamed himself for not controlling whatever was going on in his mind. Now isn’t the time to play lovey-dovey. He had to protect her children and make sure the enemy was gone for good. Only then will he come back alive.Tonia’s eyes were full of tears. She was rushing down the stairs and bumped into Camila.“I’m sorry, I wasn’t looking at where I was going,” she said.Camila saw the tears in her eyes, even though she was struggling so hard to hide them. Camila started laughing and said,“Seems there’s trouble in paradise. Let me take a wild guess. Smith dumped your silly ass?”She folded her arms, taking another jab.“Oh, my poor Tonia. What were you even thinking? I told you, you were just a thing of the moment. I know him more than you do. I knew it was onl
