"One hundred and fifty thousand dollars." That's what Dr Martinez said when we went back to see her. I watched Damian's face go completely white. "For one round of IVF," she continued and she pushed some papers across her desk. "And sometimes it takes multiple rounds before it works." I felt sick. Not because of the needles or hormones she was talking about but because I could see Damian shutting down right in front of me. "Can we have a minute alone?" Damian asked. "Of course," Dr. Martinez said and she left the room. As soon as she closed the door Damian stood up and started walking back and forth. He only did that when something was really bad. "Damian talk to me," I said. "One hundred and fifty thousand," he said again and he laughed but it wasn't a happy laugh. "Do you know how much money I lost last quarter?" "No," I said. "Three million dollars," he said and he stopped walking. "Three million Bella. The company is falling apart. Clients are leaving, deals are falling through. I'm barely keeping things together." "But we have savings," I said. "Those savings are keeping the company alive," he said and he sat down next to me. "I can't just take out one hundred and fifty thousand right now. I need that money to pay people and keep the business running." My throat felt tight. "So what are you saying?" "I'm saying I might not be able to pay for this," he said and he looked down at his hands. "I'm sorry. I know how much you want this now." "How much I want this?" I said and I felt angry. "Damian you were the one who wanted kids. You were the one who said we needed an heir. This was your idea not mine." "I know," he said. "I know and I feel terrible. This is all my fault. If the company wasn't dying then we could do this easily but right now I have to choose between saving my business or paying for fertility treatments." I got up and walked to the window because I couldn't sit still anymore. I looked outside at people walking around living normal lives and I wondered how my life got so messed up. "What do we do now?" I asked. "We wait," Damian said. "We wait until the company gets better and then we try again." "And what if it doesn't get better?" I asked and I turned around. "What if your company keeps losing money? Do we just never have kids?" "No baby I promise we will have kids," he said and he came over to me. "I just need time to fix this. Please trust me." He put his arms around me and I let him even though I was still mad. I was tired of fighting and tired of feeling bad and tired of everything. "I love you," he said into my hair. "I love you so much and I won't let this destroy us." "I love you too," I said but part of me wondered if love was even enough anymore. The next few weeks were really hard. Damian was never home. He left before I woke up and came back after I went to sleep. When I did see him he looked exhausted and stressed and he barely talked to me. I tried to be supportive because I knew he was going through a lot but it was hard when I felt like I was losing him to his work. "How's the company?" I asked one night when he actually came home at a normal time. "Bad," he said and he loosened his tie. "Really bad. I'm losing contracts everywhere. My secretary quit last week because I couldn't give her a raise. Everything is a mess." "I'm sorry," I said. "Not your fault," he said and he sat on the couch next to me. "I just don't know how to fix it." "Maybe you need help," I said. "Maybe you need to hire someone new who can help you manage everything." He looked at me and smiled and it was the first real smile I'd seen from him in weeks. "What would I do without you?" he asked and he pulled me close and kissed my forehead. "Probably fail," I said and I tried to laugh but it came out sad. "Probably," he said. Two weeks later Damian told me he was interviewing people for his secretary job. He seemed more hopeful than he had been in a long time. "I have interviews all day tomorrow," he said while we were eating breakfast. "Hopefully I find someone good." "I'm sure you will," I said. The next day I had a photoshoot for a new campaign. It went okay but I kept thinking about Damian and the company and the fertility stuff and everything else. When I got home that evening Damian was already there which was weird. He was in his office staring at his computer with a strange look on his face. "Hey," I said when I walked in. "How did the interviews go?" He looked up at me and something about his expression made me feel nervous. "Good," he said. "Really good actually. I think I found someone perfect." "That's great," I said and I smiled. "When do they start?" "Monday," he said. "Her name is Karen Tyler." That night, I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep but my brain wouldn't shut off. I kept thinking about the doctor appointment and the money and Damian's stress and this new secretary he seemed so excited about. Something felt off but I couldn't figure out what it was. It was like a weird feeling in my stomach that wouldn't go away. I told myself I was being paranoid. Damian loved me. We were going through a hard time but we would get through it together. That's what married people did. But deep down I knew something was changing and I was scared of what it meant. Next to me Damian's phone buzzed. He picked it up and the light from the screen lit up his face. He smiled at whatever he was reading and then typed something back. "Who's texting you this late?" I asked. "Just Karen," he said. "She has some questions about Monday." He was smiling at his phone. The kind of smile I hadn't seen in months. "What's so funny?" I asked. "Nothing," he said quickly and he put his phone face down on the nightstand. "Just work stuff. Go to sleep baby." But I couldn't sleep. Because Damian used to smile at me like that. And now he was smiling at her.Bella PovWe got married on a Saturday in October fourteen months after the proposal. Sixty people in a rented garden with string lights strung between the trees and wooden chairs in two short rows and Nathan having strong opinions about where the cake table was positioned that the venue coordinator ultimately accommodated because it was easier than arguing with a seven year old who had clearly thought about this more than anyone.I wore ivory and nothing like the first dress. Damian wore dark navy which Nathan had personally selected at the suit fitting and defended vigorously when both Damian and the tailor suggested grey. Nathan wore a matching vest and carried the rings in a small velvet pouch and a second pouch of flower petals because we had said he could do both and nobody came up with a compelling reason to revise that decision.Tanya stood beside me. Frank from Damian's support group stood beside him. My mother sat in the front row in blue and did not offer commentary on a
Bella PovI was still crouching when I said yes and Damian made a sound I will never forget and Nathan threw both arms in the air and shouted something that was half word and half pure noise that startled the ducks near the pond into brief alarm.Damian slid the ring onto my finger and stood and I stood and he held me and then Nathan wedged himself between both of us from the side and refused to be displaced."I'm going to be in the wedding right," Nathan said, his voice muffled against Damian's jacket."You are absolutely going to be in the wedding," Damian said."As the ring bearer or the flower person," Nathan said."Whichever one you want," I said."Both," he said without hesitating."Both it is," Damian said.We sat down in the grass eventually because Nathan wanted to tell the ducks what happened and Damian and I sat next to each other and I looked at the ring while he watched me look at it. The stone was simple and clean and the setting was low and it was nothing like
Damian Pov I had been planning it for three weeks and every time I started mapping the details I went back to the one fixed point which was that it had to be simple and honest and somewhere real. The park where Bella and I had our first date ten years ago was a forty minute drive from the city but Nathan loved the open space and the duck pond and Bella had mentioned the park twice in the past year in passing like she still thought about it.I told Nathan the plan the night before. He sat very still while I explained it which was how I knew he understood it was serious."What do I do," he said."You come out from behind the tree when I get down on one knee," I said. "That's it. Just stand there.""Should I say anything," he asked."Only if you want to," I said.He considered this. "I'll decide in the moment," he said."Good plan," I said."Do I look serious enough," he asked. He tightened his arms across his chest to demonstrate his intended posture."Very serious," I said.
Damian Pov Six months of dating and I had opened and closed the ring tab online four times before I finally called Dr. Williams and said the thing I had been avoiding saying out loud."I want to propose to Bella," I said. "I've been thinking about it for months and I keep stopping myself and I need to talk through it.""What keeps stopping you," she asked."Fear," I said. "Specifically the fear that she'll say no. Not because she doesn't love me but because she doesn't trust me enough for marriage yet. And if she says no I have to figure out how to keep co-parenting and co-existing with that answer between us.""That's a real possibility," she said. "Are you prepared for it.""No," I said honestly. "But I'm also not prepared to never ask. The wondering would be worse than the no. I know that already.""Tell me why you want to propose," she said. "Not what you're afraid of. Why you want to do it."I thought about it for a moment. "Because I want to be her husband," I said. "No
Bella Pov My mother had been holding it in for two months and I knew because silence from my mother on a subject she disagreed with was never actual silence. It was pressure building. On a Sunday afternoon while Nathan was in her backyard she set her tea down on the counter with a small deliberate sound and I knew the conversation had arrived."I need to say something about Damian," she said."Mom," I said."Hear me out," she said. "You came home broken. I watched you rebuild from nothing. I watched you sleep on my couch for weeks and I watched you cry every night and I watched you build the agency and the apartment and your whole life back from zero. And now you're choosing to go back to the person who caused all of that.""He's different now," I said."You said that before," she said. "Back when you were still married. He's working on himself you said. He's in therapy you said. And then the trial happened and every detail came out in a courtroom and you had to sit there and h
Damian Pov Nathan had been watching us for weeks with the careful attention of someone conducting a silent investigation. Every time Bella came to pick him up or I dropped him off he noted how long we talked at the door and whether we were smiling and at what and how close we stood. He was seven now and sharp in a way that kept catching me off guard. One evening while I was tucking him in he folded his hands on his chest and looked at the ceiling the way he did when he had decided to say something serious."Daddy," he said. "Are you and Mommy dating."I sat on the edge of his bed. "What makes you ask that.""Because you looked at your phone during my soccer game," he said. "And then you smiled like it was Mommy texting you. And now you smell different when she's around.""I smell different," I repeated."Like you put on more of the good spray," he said. "The one you save."I tried not to smile at that. "Yeah buddy," I said. "We're dating."He sat up fast and the blanket went
Bella PovEthan texted me in the morning. "Ready to sign the papers? Lunch at Giovanni's at one?"Giovanni's was my favorite restaurant. Before everything fell apart. Before Karen. Before the threats.I hadn't been there in over a year."I'll be there" I texted back.I got dressed. Something nice.
Damian PovI couldn't sleep. I lay in bed all night thinking about Bella calling Ethan instead of me. About him being there. Comforting her. While I was at work like an idiot. The next morning I made a decision. I had to confront Ethan. Had to make him understand that Bella was mine. That Nathan wa
Damian PovI caught Sophia trying to leak information to the press. She sent emails to three major news outlets with stories about my past. About Karen. About the affairs. About everything. My IT department caught it before the emails went out. They traced it back to her computer. Her email account
Damian PovI woke up early. Six in the morning. I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Bella's face. Angry. Scared. Hateful.I got up and went to the kitchen. I made coffee. I stood at the window looking out at the city waking up.The doorbell rang. A delivery. I checked the camera. It w
