Bella Pov

"One hundred and fifty thousand dollars."

That's what Dr Martinez said when we went back to see her. I watched Damian's face go completely white.

"For one round of IVF," she continued and she pushed some papers across her desk. "And sometimes it takes multiple rounds before it works."

I felt sick. Not because of the needles or hormones she was talking about but because I could see Damian shutting down right in front of me.

"Can we have a minute alone?" Damian asked.

"Of course," Dr. Martinez said and she left the room.

As soon as she closed the door Damian stood up and started walking back and forth. He only did that when something was really bad.

"Damian talk to me," I said.

"One hundred and fifty thousand," he said again and he laughed but it wasn't a happy laugh. "Do you know how much money I lost last quarter?"

"No," I said.

"Three million dollars," he said and he stopped walking. "Three million Bella. The company is falling apart. Clients are leaving, deals are falling through. I'm barely keeping things together."

"But we have savings," I said.

"Those savings are keeping the company alive," he said and he sat down next to me. "I can't just take out one hundred and fifty thousand right now. I need that money to pay people and keep the business running."

My throat felt tight. "So what are you saying?"

"I'm saying I might not be able to pay for this," he said and he looked down at his hands. "I'm sorry. I know how much you want this now."

"How much I want this?" I said and I felt angry. "Damian you were the one who wanted kids. You were the one who said we needed an heir. This was your idea not mine."

"I know," he said. "I know and I feel terrible. This is all my fault. If the company wasn't dying then we could do this easily but right now I have to choose between saving my business or paying for fertility treatments."

I got up and walked to the window because I couldn't sit still anymore. I looked outside at people walking around living normal lives and I wondered how my life got so messed up.

"What do we do now?" I asked.

"We wait," Damian said. "We wait until the company gets better and then we try again."

"And what if it doesn't get better?" I asked and I turned around. "What if your company keeps losing money? Do we just never have kids?"

"No baby I promise we will have kids," he said and he came over to me. "I just need time to fix this. Please trust me."

He put his arms around me and I let him even though I was still mad. I was tired of fighting and tired of feeling bad and tired of everything.

"I love you," he said into my hair. "I love you so much and I won't let this destroy us."

"I love you too," I said but part of me wondered if love was even enough anymore.

The next few weeks were really hard. Damian was never home. He left before I woke up and came back after I went to sleep. When I did see him he looked exhausted and stressed and he barely talked to me.

I tried to be supportive because I knew he was going through a lot but it was hard when I felt like I was losing him to his work.

"How's the company?" I asked one night when he actually came home at a normal time.

"Bad," he said and he loosened his tie. "Really bad. I'm losing contracts everywhere. My secretary quit last week because I couldn't give her a raise. Everything is a mess."

"I'm sorry," I said.

"Not your fault," he said and he sat on the couch next to me. "I just don't know how to fix it."

"Maybe you need help," I said. "Maybe you need to hire someone new who can help you manage everything."

He looked at me and smiled and it was the first real smile I'd seen from him in weeks.

"What would I do without you?" he asked and he pulled me close and kissed my forehead.

"Probably fail," I said and I tried to laugh but it came out sad.

"Probably," he said.

Two weeks later Damian told me he was interviewing people for his secretary job. He seemed more hopeful than he had been in a long time.

"I have interviews all day tomorrow," he said while we were eating breakfast. "Hopefully I find someone good."

"I'm sure you will," I said.

The next day I had a photoshoot for a new campaign. It went okay but I kept thinking about Damian and the company and the fertility stuff and everything else.

When I got home that evening Damian was already there which was weird. He was in his office staring at his computer with a strange look on his face.

"Hey," I said when I walked in. "How did the interviews go?"

He looked up at me and something about his expression made me feel nervous.

"Good," he said. "Really good actually. I think I found someone perfect."

"That's great," I said and I smiled. "When do they start?"

"Monday," he said. "Her name is Karen Tyler."

That night, I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep but my brain wouldn't shut off. I kept thinking about the doctor appointment and the money and Damian's stress and this new secretary he seemed so excited about.

Something felt off but I couldn't figure out what it was. It was like a weird feeling in my stomach that wouldn't go away.

I told myself I was being paranoid. Damian loved me. We were going through a hard time but we would get through it together. That's what married people did.

But deep down I knew something was changing and I was scared of what it meant.

Next to me Damian's phone buzzed. He picked it up and the light from the screen lit up his face. He smiled at whatever he was reading and then typed something back.

"Who's texting you this late?" I asked.

"Just Karen," he said. "She has some questions about Monday."

He was smiling at his phone. The kind of smile I hadn't seen in months.

"What's so funny?" I asked.

"Nothing," he said quickly and he put his phone face down on the nightstand. "Just work stuff. Go to sleep baby."

But I couldn't sleep. Because Damian used to smile at me like that.

And now he was smiling at her.

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    The Proposal

Bella PovAndrew and I had been dating for three months when he showed up at my mom's house with flowers and a nervous smile. We were supposed to go to dinner but he asked if we could talk first. My stomach dropped. I knew what was coming."Bella I've been thinking a lot about us" Andrew said. We sat on the porch where we always talked. "About our future. About what I want.""Andrew" I started. I needed to stop this before it went too far."Please let me finish" he said. He took my hand. "I know it's only been three months. I know that's fast. But I'm thirty two years old. I've dated enough to know when something is right. And you're right Bella. You and Nathan. You're what I've been looking for my whole life."He pulled a small box from his pocket and my heart stopped. This was happening. He was actually proposing. After three months of me being distant and comparing him to Damian and barely being present in the relationship. He was proposing anyway."I love you" Andrew said. He open

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Seeing Her Move On

Damian PovIt was my week with Nathan and I was picking him up from Bella's mom's house. I pulled up to see a car I didn't recognize in the driveway. A nice sedan. Expensive looking. I walked to the front door and rang the bell.Bella answered with Nathan beside her. Behind her I saw a man. Tall with dark hair and a friendly smile. He had his hand on Bella's back in a casual familiar way that made my stomach drop."Damian" Bella said. "This is Andrew. Andrew this is Damian, Nathan's father."Andrew extended his hand and I shook it numbly. His grip was firm and confident. He looked successful and stable and everything I wasn't. He looked like the kind of man mothers wanted for their daughters."Nice to meet you" Andrew said. "I've heard a lot about you.""I'm sure you have" I said. I tried to keep my voice neutral. "Nathan ready to go.""Almost" Bella said. "Let me grab his bag."She disappeared into the house leaving me standing in the doorway with Andrew and Nathan. Nathan was holdin

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Andrew Returns

Bella PovAndrew texted me three days after our first date. "I had a great time with you. Would love to see you again. Dinner this Friday?" I stared at the message for ten minutes before responding. Part of me wanted to say no. To tell him I wasn't ready. To protect him from getting involved with someone still in love with her ex husband. But my mother's voice was in my head. "You need to move on. You can't stay stuck on Damian forever. Andrew is a good man." So I texted back yes.The second date was nicer than the first. Andrew took me to a French restaurant and told me about his work saving lives in the cardiac unit. He asked thoughtful questions about Nathan and my modeling career. He listened when I talked. He laughed at my jokes. He was perfect in every way that mattered on paper. After dinner he walked me to my door again. "I really like you Bella" he said. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. "I know you're going through a lot. I want you to know I'm patient. I'm not going

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Mother's Betrayal

Damian PovI was at work reviewing inventory reports when my phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number. "You should know what your mother is doing to you. Check the attached screenshots." The message included three images. I opened them and felt my blood run cold. The screenshots were text messages between my mother Gloria and Bella. Messages where my mother encouraged Bella to cut me out of Nathan's life. Messages where she said Nathan would be better off without me. Messages where she told Bella to find a good man and let him be Nathan's real father. One message from my mother said "Damian is poison. He destroys everything he touches. Nathan deserves better than a father like that. You should move somewhere far away and start fresh. Let Nathan grow up thinking his father is dead. It would be kinder than the truth."I read the messages three times trying to process what I was seeing. My own mother was actively working to erase me from my son's life. She was telling Bella to cut

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Entertainment

Bella PovThe defamation trial verdict came back three weeks after it ended. Karen was found guilty of making false claims about Damian promising to marry her. She was ordered to pay two hundred thousand dollars in damages split between Damian and me. I got sixty thousand. Damian got the rest. Plus she had to pay both of our legal fees.Marcus called to tell me the news. "This is a big win" he said. "Karen will have to pay or face further legal consequences. You can finally put this behind you."But the win felt hollow. Two days after the verdict Karen filed for bankruptcy. All her assets were less than five thousand dollars. The court couldn't make her pay money she didn't have. The judgment meant nothing. I wouldn't see a single dollar of the sixty thousand she owed me.Worse than that, Karen disappeared. Her apartment was empty when authorities went to serve the bankruptcy papers. Her phone was disconnected. Her social media accounts were deleted. She vanished completely. Nobody kn

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Nathan's Breakdown

Damian PovThe call from Nathan's preschool came on a Tuesday afternoon while I was at work. The director Mrs Patterson asked if I could come in immediately. She said Nathan had an incident and we needed to discuss his behavior. My stomach dropped. I told Ryan I had a family emergency and drove to the preschool.Mrs Patterson met me in her office with a grim look on her face. "Mr Roberts thank you for coming. We need to talk about Nathan's behavior. It's been getting progressively worse over the past few weeks.""What kind of behavior" I asked. Nathan was only three. How bad could it be."Aggression mainly" Mrs Patterson said. She pulled out a folder with incident reports. "Last week he hit another child during circle time. Yesterday he pushed a little girl off the slide. This morning he threw blocks at his teacher when she asked him to clean up.""That doesn't sound like Nathan" I said. "He's usually gentle. Shy even.""Children often act out when they're experiencing stress or traum
