Bella Pov

"You think love is enough," Damian said.

I looked at him from across the table. We were eating dinner and I thought we were going to celebrate my new Vogue contract but instead, he wanted to talk about this again.

"Love is enough," I said.

"No it's not," he said and he put down his fork. "We have been married for two years Bella. Two whole years and you still don't want kids."

"I never said I don't want them," I told him. "I just said I'm not ready yet."

"When will you be ready?" he asked. "When you're thirty? Forty? Never?"

I felt my chest get tight. I hated when he talked to me like this. Like I was doing something wrong just because I wanted to wait.

"Why is this so important to you?" I asked.

"Because I built a company from nothing," he said and he stood up and walked to the window. "I worked my whole life to create something and I need someone to give it to when I die. I need a son or a daughter who can take over. That's what legacy means Bella."

"So this is about your company," I said.

"This is about our future," he said and he turned around. "Don't you want a family? Don't you want kids running around this apartment?"

I looked around our penthouse. It was big and beautiful and expensive and honestly I liked it just the way it was. But I couldn't tell him that because he would get mad.

"Maybe we can talk about this later," I said.

"We have been talking about it later for months," Damian said and he came back to the table. "I need an answer Bella. Do you want kids or not?"

I felt trapped. If I said no he would be angry. If I said yes I would be lying. So I said something in between.

"I want whatever makes you happy," I said.

His whole face changed. He smiled and grabbed my hands.

"Really?" he asked. "You mean it?"

"Yes," I said even though my stomach felt weird.

"Thank you baby," he said and he kissed me. "Thank you so much. We are going to have the most beautiful kids."

I smiled but it felt fake.

The next few weeks were strange. Damian downloaded apps on his phone to track when I was ovulating. He bought vitamins for me to take. He planned everything like it was a work project.

"Tonight is the best night," he would say and then we would have sex but it didn't feel romantic anymore. It felt like a job.

One month passed and I got my period. Damian looked disappointed but said it was okay.

Two months passed. Same thing.

Three months, four months, five months.

"This isn't working," I said one morning.

"We just need to keep trying," Damian said but he looked worried.

"Maybe we should see a doctor," I told him.

He didn't say anything for a while. Then he nodded.

"Okay. Make an appointment," he said.

I called the fertility clinic and got us an appointment for two weeks later. Those two weeks felt really long. Damian kept working late and I kept going to photoshoots, we barely talked to each other.

Finally the day came. We went to the clinic together and held hands in the waiting room. A nurse called us back and took my blood and asked us a bunch of questions. Then we waited some more.

Dr Martinez came in with a folder. She sat down and looked at us.

"I got your test results back," she said.

"And?" Damian asked.

"Conceiving naturally won't be easy for you," she said.

The room got really quiet. I felt Damian's hand squeeze mine really hard.

"What does that mean?" I asked and my voice came out small.

"It means you have some issues that make it hard to get pregnant on your own," Dr Martinez said. "But there are options. We can do IVF or other treatments."

"How much do those cost?" Damian asked.

"We can discuss that at your next appointment," she said. "But I want you to know that many couples in your situation do eventually have children. It just takes some medical help."

We left the clinic without talking. Damian drove us home and his jaw was tight the whole time. When we got inside he went straight to his office and closed the door.

I stood in the hallway and felt like crying but I didn't. Instead I went to our bedroom and laid down on the bed and stared at the ceiling.

This was my fault. My body was broken and now Damian would never get what he wanted. His company would have no one to take over. His parents would never have grandkids. And it was all because of me.

I heard Damian on the phone in his office. He was talking loud and he sounded angry but I couldn't hear what he was saying.

After a while he came out and got in bed next to me. He didn't say anything. He just laid there looking at the ceiling too.

"I'm sorry," I whispered.

"It's not your fault," he said but his voice sounded flat.

"Yes it is," I said. "If I was normal we wouldn't have this problem."

"Bella stop," he said and he turned to look at me. "We will figure this out okay? We will find a way."

"Okay," I said but I didn't believe him.

He pulled me close and I put my head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat. It was going really fast like he was scared or stressed or both.

"I love you," he said.

"I love you too," I said.

But I wondered if love really was enough like I told him at dinner all those weeks ago. Because right now it felt like love wasn't fixing anything at all.

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    A New Beginning

Bella PovWe got married on a Saturday in October fourteen months after the proposal. Sixty people in a rented garden with string lights strung between the trees and wooden chairs in two short rows and Nathan having strong opinions about where the cake table was positioned that the venue coordinator ultimately accommodated because it was easier than arguing with a seven year old who had clearly thought about this more than anyone.I wore ivory and nothing like the first dress. Damian wore dark navy which Nathan had personally selected at the suit fitting and defended vigorously when both Damian and the tailor suggested grey. Nathan wore a matching vest and carried the rings in a small velvet pouch and a second pouch of flower petals because we had said he could do both and nobody came up with a compelling reason to revise that decision.Tanya stood beside me. Frank from Damian's support group stood beside him. My mother sat in the front row in blue and did not offer commentary on a

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Chocolate Cake and Ducks

Bella PovI was still crouching when I said yes and Damian made a sound I will never forget and Nathan threw both arms in the air and shouted something that was half word and half pure noise that startled the ducks near the pond into brief alarm.Damian slid the ring onto my finger and stood and I stood and he held me and then Nathan wedged himself between both of us from the side and refused to be displaced."I'm going to be in the wedding right," Nathan said, his voice muffled against Damian's jacket."You are absolutely going to be in the wedding," Damian said."As the ring bearer or the flower person," Nathan said."Whichever one you want," I said."Both," he said without hesitating."Both it is," Damian said.We sat down in the grass eventually because Nathan wanted to tell the ducks what happened and Damian and I sat next to each other and I looked at the ring while he watched me look at it. The stone was simple and clean and the setting was low and it was nothing like

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Marry Me Again

Damian Pov I had been planning it for three weeks and every time I started mapping the details I went back to the one fixed point which was that it had to be simple and honest and somewhere real. The park where Bella and I had our first date ten years ago was a forty minute drive from the city but Nathan loved the open space and the duck pond and Bella had mentioned the park twice in the past year in passing like she still thought about it.I told Nathan the plan the night before. He sat very still while I explained it which was how I knew he understood it was serious."What do I do," he said."You come out from behind the tree when I get down on one knee," I said. "That's it. Just stand there.""Should I say anything," he asked."Only if you want to," I said.He considered this. "I'll decide in the moment," he said."Good plan," I said."Do I look serious enough," he asked. He tightened his arms across his chest to demonstrate his intended posture."Very serious," I said.

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Brave to Ask

Damian Pov Six months of dating and I had opened and closed the ring tab online four times before I finally called Dr. Williams and said the thing I had been avoiding saying out loud."I want to propose to Bella," I said. "I've been thinking about it for months and I keep stopping myself and I need to talk through it.""What keeps stopping you," she asked."Fear," I said. "Specifically the fear that she'll say no. Not because she doesn't love me but because she doesn't trust me enough for marriage yet. And if she says no I have to figure out how to keep co-parenting and co-existing with that answer between us.""That's a real possibility," she said. "Are you prepared for it.""No," I said honestly. "But I'm also not prepared to never ask. The wondering would be worse than the no. I know that already.""Tell me why you want to propose," she said. "Not what you're afraid of. Why you want to do it."I thought about it for a moment. "Because I want to be her husband," I said. "No

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Solid Ground

Bella Pov My mother had been holding it in for two months and I knew because silence from my mother on a subject she disagreed with was never actual silence. It was pressure building. On a Sunday afternoon while Nathan was in her backyard she set her tea down on the counter with a small deliberate sound and I knew the conversation had arrived."I need to say something about Damian," she said."Mom," I said."Hear me out," she said. "You came home broken. I watched you rebuild from nothing. I watched you sleep on my couch for weeks and I watched you cry every night and I watched you build the agency and the apartment and your whole life back from zero. And now you're choosing to go back to the person who caused all of that.""He's different now," I said."You said that before," she said. "Back when you were still married. He's working on himself you said. He's in therapy you said. And then the trial happened and every detail came out in a courtroom and you had to sit there and h

  • HIS SECRETARY'S SECRET    Right Timing

Damian Pov Nathan had been watching us for weeks with the careful attention of someone conducting a silent investigation. Every time Bella came to pick him up or I dropped him off he noted how long we talked at the door and whether we were smiling and at what and how close we stood. He was seven now and sharp in a way that kept catching me off guard. One evening while I was tucking him in he folded his hands on his chest and looked at the ceiling the way he did when he had decided to say something serious."Daddy," he said. "Are you and Mommy dating."I sat on the edge of his bed. "What makes you ask that.""Because you looked at your phone during my soccer game," he said. "And then you smiled like it was Mommy texting you. And now you smell different when she's around.""I smell different," I repeated."Like you put on more of the good spray," he said. "The one you save."I tried not to smile at that. "Yeah buddy," I said. "We're dating."He sat up fast and the blanket went
