Bella Pov
"You think love is enough," Damian said. I looked at him from across the table. We were eating dinner and I thought we were going to celebrate my new Vogue contract but instead, he wanted to talk about this again. "Love is enough," I said. "No it's not," he said and he put down his fork. "We have been married for two years Bella. Two whole years and you still don't want kids." "I never said I don't want them," I told him. "I just said I'm not ready yet." "When will you be ready?" he asked. "When you're thirty? Forty? Never?" I felt my chest get tight. I hated when he talked to me like this. Like I was doing something wrong just because I wanted to wait. "Why is this so important to you?" I asked. "Because I built a company from nothing," he said and he stood up and walked to the window. "I worked my whole life to create something and I need someone to give it to when I die. I need a son or a daughter who can take over. That's what legacy means Bella." "So this is about your company," I said. "This is about our future," he said and he turned around. "Don't you want a family? Don't you want kids running around this apartment?" I looked around our penthouse. It was big and beautiful and expensive and honestly I liked it just the way it was. But I couldn't tell him that because he would get mad. "Maybe we can talk about this later," I said. "We have been talking about it later for months," Damian said and he came back to the table. "I need an answer Bella. Do you want kids or not?" I felt trapped. If I said no he would be angry. If I said yes I would be lying. So I said something in between. "I want whatever makes you happy," I said. His whole face changed. He smiled and grabbed my hands. "Really?" he asked. "You mean it?" "Yes," I said even though my stomach felt weird. "Thank you baby," he said and he kissed me. "Thank you so much. We are going to have the most beautiful kids." I smiled but it felt fake. The next few weeks were strange. Damian downloaded apps on his phone to track when I was ovulating. He bought vitamins for me to take. He planned everything like it was a work project. "Tonight is the best night," he would say and then we would have sex but it didn't feel romantic anymore. It felt like a job. One month passed and I got my period. Damian looked disappointed but said it was okay. Two months passed. Same thing. Three months, four months, five months. "This isn't working," I said one morning. "We just need to keep trying," Damian said but he looked worried. "Maybe we should see a doctor," I told him. He didn't say anything for a while. Then he nodded. "Okay. Make an appointment," he said. I called the fertility clinic and got us an appointment for two weeks later. Those two weeks felt really long. Damian kept working late and I kept going to photoshoots, we barely talked to each other. Finally the day came. We went to the clinic together and held hands in the waiting room. A nurse called us back and took my blood and asked us a bunch of questions. Then we waited some more. Dr Martinez came in with a folder. She sat down and looked at us. "I got your test results back," she said. "And?" Damian asked. "Conceiving naturally won't be easy for you," she said. The room got really quiet. I felt Damian's hand squeeze mine really hard. "What does that mean?" I asked and my voice came out small. "It means you have some issues that make it hard to get pregnant on your own," Dr Martinez said. "But there are options. We can do IVF or other treatments." "How much do those cost?" Damian asked. "We can discuss that at your next appointment," she said. "But I want you to know that many couples in your situation do eventually have children. It just takes some medical help." We left the clinic without talking. Damian drove us home and his jaw was tight the whole time. When we got inside he went straight to his office and closed the door. I stood in the hallway and felt like crying but I didn't. Instead I went to our bedroom and laid down on the bed and stared at the ceiling. This was my fault. My body was broken and now Damian would never get what he wanted. His company would have no one to take over. His parents would never have grandkids. And it was all because of me. I heard Damian on the phone in his office. He was talking loud and he sounded angry but I couldn't hear what he was saying. After a while he came out and got in bed next to me. He didn't say anything. He just laid there looking at the ceiling too. "I'm sorry," I whispered. "It's not your fault," he said but his voice sounded flat. "Yes it is," I said. "If I was normal we wouldn't have this problem." "Bella stop," he said and he turned to look at me. "We will figure this out okay? We will find a way." "Okay," I said but I didn't believe him. He pulled me close and I put my head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat. It was going really fast like he was scared or stressed or both. "I love you," he said. "I love you too," I said. But I wondered if love really was enough like I told him at dinner all those weeks ago. Because right now it felt like love wasn't fixing anything at all.Bella PovAndrew and I had been dating for three months when he showed up at my mom's house with flowers and a nervous smile. We were supposed to go to dinner but he asked if we could talk first. My stomach dropped. I knew what was coming."Bella I've been thinking a lot about us" Andrew said. We sat on the porch where we always talked. "About our future. About what I want.""Andrew" I started. I needed to stop this before it went too far."Please let me finish" he said. He took my hand. "I know it's only been three months. I know that's fast. But I'm thirty two years old. I've dated enough to know when something is right. And you're right Bella. You and Nathan. You're what I've been looking for my whole life."He pulled a small box from his pocket and my heart stopped. This was happening. He was actually proposing. After three months of me being distant and comparing him to Damian and barely being present in the relationship. He was proposing anyway."I love you" Andrew said. He open
Damian PovIt was my week with Nathan and I was picking him up from Bella's mom's house. I pulled up to see a car I didn't recognize in the driveway. A nice sedan. Expensive looking. I walked to the front door and rang the bell.Bella answered with Nathan beside her. Behind her I saw a man. Tall with dark hair and a friendly smile. He had his hand on Bella's back in a casual familiar way that made my stomach drop."Damian" Bella said. "This is Andrew. Andrew this is Damian, Nathan's father."Andrew extended his hand and I shook it numbly. His grip was firm and confident. He looked successful and stable and everything I wasn't. He looked like the kind of man mothers wanted for their daughters."Nice to meet you" Andrew said. "I've heard a lot about you.""I'm sure you have" I said. I tried to keep my voice neutral. "Nathan ready to go.""Almost" Bella said. "Let me grab his bag."She disappeared into the house leaving me standing in the doorway with Andrew and Nathan. Nathan was holdin
Bella PovAndrew texted me three days after our first date. "I had a great time with you. Would love to see you again. Dinner this Friday?" I stared at the message for ten minutes before responding. Part of me wanted to say no. To tell him I wasn't ready. To protect him from getting involved with someone still in love with her ex husband. But my mother's voice was in my head. "You need to move on. You can't stay stuck on Damian forever. Andrew is a good man." So I texted back yes.The second date was nicer than the first. Andrew took me to a French restaurant and told me about his work saving lives in the cardiac unit. He asked thoughtful questions about Nathan and my modeling career. He listened when I talked. He laughed at my jokes. He was perfect in every way that mattered on paper. After dinner he walked me to my door again. "I really like you Bella" he said. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. "I know you're going through a lot. I want you to know I'm patient. I'm not going
Damian PovI was at work reviewing inventory reports when my phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number. "You should know what your mother is doing to you. Check the attached screenshots." The message included three images. I opened them and felt my blood run cold. The screenshots were text messages between my mother Gloria and Bella. Messages where my mother encouraged Bella to cut me out of Nathan's life. Messages where she said Nathan would be better off without me. Messages where she told Bella to find a good man and let him be Nathan's real father. One message from my mother said "Damian is poison. He destroys everything he touches. Nathan deserves better than a father like that. You should move somewhere far away and start fresh. Let Nathan grow up thinking his father is dead. It would be kinder than the truth."I read the messages three times trying to process what I was seeing. My own mother was actively working to erase me from my son's life. She was telling Bella to cut
Bella PovThe defamation trial verdict came back three weeks after it ended. Karen was found guilty of making false claims about Damian promising to marry her. She was ordered to pay two hundred thousand dollars in damages split between Damian and me. I got sixty thousand. Damian got the rest. Plus she had to pay both of our legal fees.Marcus called to tell me the news. "This is a big win" he said. "Karen will have to pay or face further legal consequences. You can finally put this behind you."But the win felt hollow. Two days after the verdict Karen filed for bankruptcy. All her assets were less than five thousand dollars. The court couldn't make her pay money she didn't have. The judgment meant nothing. I wouldn't see a single dollar of the sixty thousand she owed me.Worse than that, Karen disappeared. Her apartment was empty when authorities went to serve the bankruptcy papers. Her phone was disconnected. Her social media accounts were deleted. She vanished completely. Nobody kn
Damian PovThe call from Nathan's preschool came on a Tuesday afternoon while I was at work. The director Mrs Patterson asked if I could come in immediately. She said Nathan had an incident and we needed to discuss his behavior. My stomach dropped. I told Ryan I had a family emergency and drove to the preschool.Mrs Patterson met me in her office with a grim look on her face. "Mr Roberts thank you for coming. We need to talk about Nathan's behavior. It's been getting progressively worse over the past few weeks.""What kind of behavior" I asked. Nathan was only three. How bad could it be."Aggression mainly" Mrs Patterson said. She pulled out a folder with incident reports. "Last week he hit another child during circle time. Yesterday he pushed a little girl off the slide. This morning he threw blocks at his teacher when she asked him to clean up.""That doesn't sound like Nathan" I said. "He's usually gentle. Shy even.""Children often act out when they're experiencing stress or traum
Damian PovI sat in the police station waiting room. My leg bounced up and down. I couldn't sit still. Couldn't stop thinking about the SUV ramming into our car. About Bella screaming. About how close we came to losing everything.A detective came out. Detective Harris. Middle aged man with gray ha
Karen PovI sat in a coffee shop three blocks from Bella's clinic. I ordered an expensive latte and a croissant. I ate slowly. I had time. I wasn't in any hurry. My phone buzzed. A text from the nurse I had contacted. The one who worked at Bella's clinic. The one who had access to the medication ro
Karen Pov I sat in my stolen car parked across the street from Damian's penthouse building. I watched through binoculars as police cars surrounded the place. Blue and red lights flashing everywhere. Officers going in and out constantly. All because of me. All because my poison didn't work again.D
Damian PovI woke up early. Six in the morning. I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Bella's face. Angry. Scared. Hateful.I got up and went to the kitchen. I made coffee. I stood at the window looking out at the city waking up.The doorbell rang. A delivery. I checked the camera. It w
