Later that evening, the Alpha was in his chambers when a guard knocked on the door. After a few moments, the Alpha answered. “Who is that?”

“Your Greatness. The messenger is here.”

“What? This late evening?” Alpha Williams sounded surprised. He would have asked what was the matter, but he knew the guard wouldn’t know. The messenger was a pack-assigned learner, tasked with gathering information about what was happening around the pack. The Alpha was always the first person he could report to.

“Yes, Alpha Williams.”

The guard heard the Alpha grunt, then low, hushed voices sounded. The Luna was in the chambers too, and it seemed they were arguing about something.

“I’ll have to step down for Khalid soon. Waiting for me to die first is probably not a good idea. That’s not happening anytime soon.” The Alpha chuckled. He was clearly talking to the Luna, and the guard’s face softened slightly. The Alpha was usually deadly serious until he was with his wife.
