LOGINFor a moment, I could not move as I watched Helen smirking devilishly and clicking the trigger. My life flashed before my eyes and my dead parents went through my mind. I just snapped back into reality when I felt warm hands wrapping around my body as the firing of bullets filled my ears. When I shakingly looked up, I saw the face of Karlo who was clenching his jaw as he kept shooting with his gun with me being held by him.
I don’t even know what was happening anymore. The last thing I remember was being carried by his arms while we were jumping off the balcony. Am I dead? Because for some reason, I did not feel hurt. Or maybe, that is what you experience when you face death. Nothing but only dark silence. “You can leave,” a voice echoed in my ears. Leave? Who will leave? After a while, I heard a familiar sigh. Someone cleared its throat before speaking up. “What now, Karlo? Everyone will hunt your wife now,” I heard a man’s voice. My head was still light when I started opening my eyes. At first, everything was spinning around for I was dizzy. The white ceiling almost blinded me, but I also realized that I was in our mansion again. Why am I here? I thought it was already heaven! I moved my face sideways and the first person I saw was Karlo who was talking to Timothy, my cousin. They were both wearing casual shirts, meaning they do not have work. They were currently talking just beside the doors of my room’s balcony. Their facial expressions were deadly serious as if they are carrying the world. “The enemies of Tito Dranreb have already known his identity. Of course they l will make Minerva as a target now. What next? Ambush her like what happened to her parents?” Enemies of my dad? And… ambush me? What are they talking about? Karlo massaged the bridge of his nose and shut his eyes tightly as if he was stressed of the things Timothy was saying. Timothy started pacing back and forth. And then, he leaned over to Karlo and pointed his index finger at Karlo. “If something happens to my sister, you are dead to me. You got that?” Timothy warned Karlo. “I tried my best in protecting her-“ “Well you did not fucking tried enough.” And the next thing I knew, Timothy was walking throughout the door. Karlo stayed standing and also followed Timothy with his sharp eyes. He must have felt me watching him so he shifted his gaze upon me. He blinked and replaced his dark expression into a relieved one. Later on, he started walking towards me. “Are you alright? What do you feel now?” he worriedly asked when he was finally standing in front of me. Before I could even speak up to answer him, he had already turned to telephone beside my bed and called the head maid to bring a tray of food and water. I just watched him do that until he sat on the bed and stared at my face. “Does something hurt with you now?” he softly asked. “What were you and Timothy talking about?” I asked, my voice weak but the tone is authoritative. “Protecting me from whom? And what did it has to do with my dad?” He did not even react at the fact that I heard them, but only shook his head. “You have to rest-“ “Ever since I was a little kid, I have already been sensing som weird things about my parents. I disregarded it because I did not care. But the weirdest thing they did was arranging me to marry you…” I uttered and squinted my eyes. “And just last night, my best friend from college had a gun pointing at me. Next, you were shooting her in the middle of the party’s chaos-“ “Please, Minerva, this is not the right time-“ he tried to say. “- so tell me what the fuck just happened last night that is connected to the conversation you had with my cousin?” We stared at each other. I glared at him to let him know that I am full with mixed frustation and confusion right now. Silence engulfed us before he decided to speak up again. “Your parents are the founders of the Red Cartel,” he revealed. “It is an organization with assassins who kill enemies of the government, like mafia gangs and huge criminals in the country.” “They are what?” I exclaimed. “It was a secret organization, so the identities of your parents especially yours were under the special protection of the government, because the Red Cartel is also executing traitors and threats of the cities. But for some reason, the enemies of your parents tracked who they are and planned a deadly ambush.” Tears started to form in my eyes. He was taken aback by my disoriented face, but he decided to continue what he was saying. This time, he put his hand above mine and squeezed it. Usually, I would be uncomfortable because I did not like him touching in any inch of my body, but it felt like he is just there for me as I faced the truth. “You have to understand, Minerva, that your parents were very powerful people in this country. They might not be known by the good ones who they are protecting. Moreover, they are heroes; treated as enemies by the criminals,” he said. “And now that they are gone, you are destined to be taking over the Red Cartel, that is why a lot of enemies will come after you, wishing you dead.” “What the hell…” I was about to remove his hand but he tightened it more. I gritted my teeth to use my strength on him. He only matched it, though. “Let go of me!” I demanded. “Minerva, you are the future Red Cartel Queen!” he said. “And no matter what happens, I will be here to always protect you!” “I do not know what you are saying! I just want you to get out of my room! Now! I hate you to hell!”“No,” Victor answered after a minute of silence. “But I’m not closing doors. I know I have been playing hearts and breaking them in the end, but I also can’t force myself to love someone else. Many times, I have tried to forget you, entertain people who were interested in me, and intensify relationships, but they don’t end very well.”“Then how could it be possible for both of us, if you can’t even prolong your relationship with others?” I inquired in curiosity.“Because I really, really liked you before, you know? It felt like I was looking for you in everyone I met,” he explained and gradually shook his head. “But maybe that is the thrill in it. I didn’t get you in the end, so I was trying to find someone similar to you so I could finally experience the love that you never reciprocated.”I furrowed my eyebrows. “You are a good man, Victor. I know you are going to meet someone – not similar to me, but better than me, who would give you the love more than you deserve.”He glanced at m
I glanced at Victor with amusement. His smirk was still playing on his lips, but there was embarrassment in his eyes at how they were no longer fixated on the road. While driving, I could see Sheila from the rearview mirror, who was not in delight and was merely crossing her arms.“First love?” I broke the silence and slightly looked over my shoulder.“Minerva, that is not important anymore,” Victor tried to shroud the topic while his hand was still on the steering wheel.“Oh, yeah? Before, he mentioned a girl he liked very much when he was still residing in the Philippines. He was loyal to her, but ever since he moved here and this alleged girl had another boyfriend, he has played every woman he dated. I have never heard him being serious in relationships. And that is because he still likes that mysterious girl from the Philippines!”I squinted my eyes at Victor. “Really?”“Yes. I wonder how beautiful that girl is for our friend to be crazy about her. I mean, can you agree, Minerva?
The drive to the school was in complete silence. Karlo didn’t even dare to look at me, and I did the same. It is too awkward just remembering the conversation we had last night. I wanted to ask if he is even okay to drive me to the university since I am thinking that he might have a hangover.I sighed and shut my eyes. But why am I even sad that we are not talking? I would be happy for him not to bug me. I am sure we will talk once we train later.“Thank you,” I said and went outside the car the moment we arrived at the parking lot. “I will text you after my classes.”Without looking back, I went straight to the gate of the university. This is okay. Minerva, why are you even bothered? You don’t like that son of a bitch, right? So why are your shoulders saggy?“Minervaaaaaaa!”When I looked up, it was Kristine who was running in the center of the hallway with her arms flying. She hugged me tightly, and I didn’t have a choice but to catch her hug.“Hey, Kristine. What’s up?” I greeted h
What time is he coming back?I watched the time from my phone and saw that it is going to be one am. Currently, my buttocks are glued to the sofa, Netflix is on the television, and my phone is in my hand. Victor and I were texting each other an hour ago.Victor: So you and Ian had already broken up?Me: Yes. But when Karlo and I married, we were still together. I even opened up about taking a divorce after my parents died.Victor: Your parents died?Me: Yes.Victor: Must have been horrible for you. I would like to give condolences even it is too late.Me: It’s alright. Thank you. I have a new life now.Victor: Does Karlo take care of you?Me: Yes.Victor: Does he love you?Me: I think so.Victor: Do you love him?For some reason, I couldn’t answer that question and just turned off my phone. I only made an excuse that I had to prepare my books in my room for my classes tomorrow. But to be honest, I was not comfortable with that question – do I love Karlo? Well, I could say sometimes I
I stopped in my tracks when I arrived in front of Karlo, who was being interviewed by the girls my age.“Hi! What’s your name?”“Can I get your number?”“Are you single?I gritted my teeth and clenched my fists. Karlo was obviously flustered and was having a hard time answering them. When his eyes found mine, he stood straight and silently excused himself to go through the girls. I remained glaring at the foreign girls, who were confused by reading their expressions.“I’m his wife,” I declared and shot my eyebrow. “Do you mind moving away from my fucking husband?”I swear, I was bathed with anger inside my system. From what I am seeing, they are definitely college students on campus. Their building is different from mine, so I don’t see these kids around. Of course, I am aggressive like them when it comes to boys when I was their age, but man, not my husband!“Oh, sorry, sorry…”A playful, satisfied smirk was plastered on my face when they went away like scaredy cats. When my eyes dri
I yawned and stretched my arms a little bit after the class was done. Shiela immediately went to me, asking how I managed to convince our condominium’s management to party in the pool area.“Trust me. It was just so easy,” I merely said and winked at her.Our friends were already in the students' lounge, waiting for us, since Sheila called us for a meeting. The group chat again was lined up with messages, but I didn’t bother to look at them. My mind was still thinking about the professor’s discussion, so I had to read a book while walking through the hallway. Shiela was still pattering. I managed to reply to her whenever she asks questions while reading.“Hey, guys! Classes done?” I heard Sheila as she ran towards the table where our friends were.I had to finish the last part of the book chapter, so I didn’t look it up. I stopped in the middle of the lounge. They were clamoring and calling me already, so I had to raise my hand and make them stop. When I was satisfied with what I read
“Wow,” I muttered in awe.The cabin is vintage brown. From what I could see, it is three-storey with glass doors and windows. I couldn’t see the interiors because there were white curtains from the inside. A terrace was on the second floor, filled with a marble table, two chairs, and flowery plants
Sheila and Christine introduced me to their party. I knew some of them from the classes I attended today, and the others were studying from other universities, but they know each other in the city. We were the same ages, and they were interesting to know. We had light drinks since we all have clas
Together, we went to the parking lot. When he let me inside the car, I immediately messaged my friends that I am now going to the party. They said the circles were already complete and I am the only one who is still not there. It’s not like their other friends were expecting me, but they wanted to
“This is the headquarters of the Red Cartel. The members would train here, have conferences, and plan their missions for execution in specific deadlines,” Karlo elucidated with his tone being careful as we watched the door at the end of the hallway. “You will be frequent in visiting the headquarter
