For a moment, I could not move as I watched Helen smirking devilishly and clicking the trigger. My life flashed before my eyes and my dead parents went through my mind. I just snapped back into reality when I felt warm hands wrapping around my body as the firing of bullets filled my ears. When I shakingly looked up, I saw the face of Karlo who was clenching his jaw as he kept shooting with his gun with me being held by him.

I don’t even know what was happening anymore. The last thing I remember was being carried by his arms while we were jumping off the balcony.

Am I dead? Because for some reason, I did not feel hurt. Or maybe, that is what you experience when you face death. Nothing but only dark silence.

“You can leave,” a voice echoed in my ears.

Leave? Who will leave?

After a while, I heard a familiar sigh. Someone cleared its throat before speaking up.

“What now, Karlo? Everyone will hunt your wife now,” I heard a man’s voice.

My head was still light when I started opening my eyes. At first, everything was spinning around for I was dizzy. The white ceiling almost blinded me, but I also realized that I was in our mansion again.

Why am I here? I thought it was already heaven!

I moved my face sideways and the first person I saw was Karlo who was talking to Timothy, my cousin. They were both wearing casual shirts, meaning they do not have work. They were currently talking just beside the doors of my room’s balcony. Their facial expressions were deadly serious as if they are carrying the world.

“The enemies of Tito Dranreb have already known his identity. Of course they l will make Minerva as a target now. What next? Ambush her like what happened to her parents?”

Enemies of my dad? And… ambush me?

What are they talking about?

Karlo massaged the bridge of his nose and shut his eyes tightly as if he was stressed of the things Timothy was saying. Timothy started pacing back and forth. And then, he leaned over to Karlo and pointed his index finger at Karlo.

“If something happens to my sister, you are dead to me. You got that?” Timothy warned Karlo.

“I tried my best in protecting her-“

“Well you did not fucking tried enough.”

And the next thing I knew, Timothy was walking throughout the door. Karlo stayed standing and also followed Timothy with his sharp eyes. He must have felt me watching him so he shifted his gaze upon me. He blinked and replaced his dark expression into a relieved one. Later on, he started walking towards me.

“Are you alright? What do you feel now?” he worriedly asked when he was finally standing in front of me.

Before I could even speak up to answer him, he had already turned to telephone beside my bed and called the head maid to bring a tray of food and water. I just watched him do that until he sat on the bed and stared at my face.

“Does something hurt with you now?” he softly asked.

“What were you and Timothy talking about?” I asked, my voice weak but the tone is authoritative. “Protecting me from whom? And what did it has to do with my dad?”

He did not even react at the fact that I heard them, but only shook his head. “You have to rest-“

“Ever since I was a little kid, I have already been sensing som weird things about my parents. I disregarded it because I did not care. But the weirdest thing they did was arranging me to marry you…” I uttered and squinted my eyes. “And just last night, my best friend from college had a gun pointing at me. Next, you were shooting her in the middle of the party’s chaos-“

“Please, Minerva, this is not the right time-“ he tried to say.

“- so tell me what the fuck just happened last night that is connected to the conversation you had with my cousin?”

We stared at each other. I glared at him to let him know that I am full with mixed frustation and confusion right now. Silence engulfed us before he decided to speak up again.

“Your parents are the founders of the Red Cartel,” he revealed. “It is an organization with assassins who kill enemies of the government, like mafia gangs and huge criminals in the country.”

“They are what?” I exclaimed.

“It was a secret organization, so the identities of your parents especially yours were under the special protection of the government, because the Red Cartel is also executing traitors and threats of the cities. But for some reason, the enemies of your parents tracked who they are and planned a deadly ambush.”

Tears started to form in my eyes. He was taken aback by my disoriented face, but he decided to continue what he was saying. This time, he put his hand above mine and squeezed it. Usually, I would be uncomfortable because I did not like him touching in any inch of my body, but it felt like he is just there for me as I faced the truth.

“You have to understand, Minerva, that your parents were very powerful people in this country. They might not be known by the good ones who they are protecting. Moreover, they are heroes; treated as enemies by the criminals,” he said. “And now that they are gone, you are destined to be taking over the Red Cartel, that is why a lot of enemies will come after you, wishing you dead.”

“What the hell…”

I was about to remove his hand but he tightened it more. I gritted my teeth to use my strength on him. He only matched it, though.

“Let go of me!” I demanded.

“Minerva, you are the future Red Cartel Queen!” he said. “And no matter what happens, I will be here to always protect you!”

“I do not know what you are saying! I just want you to get out of my room! Now! I hate you to hell!”

“Minerva, you have a husband?” Jerlyn mumbled. They looked at Karlo behind me. I sighed in dismay.“Yes.” Kristine was the one who answered the question. “Minerva and her husband are both from mafia organizations in the Philippines. They kill people, exploit money, and are lawbreakers. They have my father now. My mother is dead, because they killed her last night.”That must be the reason why she couldn’t stop crying a while ago. From what I get now, her parents must be mafia or assassins. They were the ones who attacked me.“I didn’t get why my parents, Minerva? Why did you have to take them away, too?” Kristine said.“Because Helen investigated the people who are close to her,” Karlo answered again, which made me slap his hand, but he didn’t shut the hell up. “When she knew that your parents were government assassins in this city, she hired them and reasoned out that Minerva is an escaped fugitive from the Philippines. It was all a lie, so they could kill Minerva last night. That is

  • Hail the Mafia Queen   Chapter Thirty-Five: Victor's Death

“No, no!” I mumbled as I was glued to the floor with Victor's fall.“What have you done?! I told you not to hurt Victor, you psychopathic bitch!” Kristine shouted at Helen.Helen didn’t even budge and just blew off the smoke from the tip of her gun. “Ooops, wrong target…”I felt anger seething through my veins. My body shaking, my lips trembling, and my fists clenching. Helen cackled and pointed the gun at me again. I wasn’t threatened. I just glared at her, making sure she was not out of sight.“You will pay for this, Helen. Your blood will drench my hands. Watch it,” I said, compromising her future.“Ooooh, I’m scared. What could a spoiled brat like you do? You couldn’t even defend your parents when they were ambushed?”“Yes. Ambushed by your organization.”She bestowed a confused expression with a still grin on her lips. After a second, I could hear a chopper from outside the building. I didn’t take my eyes off her while Kristine was still crying below me with Victor in her arms. S

“Kristine! Can you please explain to me what is going on?!” I demanded as I kept dodging her knife.Last night’s memories were like a deja vu to me. I was dodging while my attackers tried to get close to me and harm me. If Karlo hadn’t arrived on time, I would have been dead for now!“I never met your mother!” I tried defending myself.“Shut up, you bitch!” she cursed and managed to elbow my chin, making me bump my back on the sink. “I’m going to fucking kill you!”Her words and rage made my skin crawl. I could see from her eyes that she is determined to kill me no matter what. I wanted to understand how I knew her mother and how she could think that I was her killer. But I don’t want to die tonight just because she is one of my precious friends. I want to protect myself! When she raised the knife again in attempting to stab me, I pushed her hard to the ground. It didn’t let her be defeated by then. She stood up hastily and rained me with stabs that I carefully dodged until I caught h

  • Hail the Mafia Queen   Chapter Thirty-Three: You Killed My Mother

There was something about the frigid voice of Kristine. It was so unusual that I got goosebumps when she ended the call. It was obvious that she had been crying, and I don’t even know the reason. Even our friends are confused. Birthdays should come with joy, not with tears.“Is everything okay? Why do you look worried?”A hand from Karlo on my shoulder was the reason why my thoughts got obliterated. I turned to him. Even Victor, behind him, was watching me silently while carrying some of the things to bring to the top floor.“It’s alright. I just spoke with Shiela and Kristine. They are coming here,” I said and lifted the sides of my lips. “Let’s go? I think we should help the guys in the pool area.”He was about to say something, but he was suddenly halted by the phone call he was receiving from his phone. Without getting away from me, he answered it with his discreet eyes still darting on me, conscious that I would be gone from his sight.“Yes. Now? Sure. I’ll go there,” he quietly

Silence prevailed between Karlo and me while we were inside the elevator. On the other hand, I could see from our both reflections that he was hovering my body from my head to toe. He wanted to comment, but he stopped himself. The elevator sounded opening, revealing numerous cars in the parking lot. Just like last night, it was completely deserted. I gulped, fear washing over me because of my overthinking mind. What if there are black figures again? What if they will attack without us knowing? What if there are many now?“I’m here,” I heard Karlo mutter.I turned my head to my side to face him. “What?”He looked back, looking directly into my eyes. “I just want you to know… that I am here,” he assured softly. After that, I felt a warm hand on mine. I gazed at our intertwined hands, feeling comfort just by his mere touch. I nodded for a while before we went outside together. My head spun around the whole parking lot with lined-up cars, hoping to spot my friends. I heard a newly parked

“We still held the attacker as a hostage. My men are watching over him. He’s unconscious. Once he wakes up, we will interrogate him,” Karlo explained to me.I furrowed my eyebrows. “Do you think Helen is behind this?”Karlo sighed and massaged the bridge of his nose. “Well, I received news from Timothy about Ritz, your clone,” he started, and sadly looked in my eyes. “She was found dead in your mansion. That must have been the confirmation reported by her killers that that was not you.”Just the idea of having someone dead because she’s pretending to be me is terrifying. I could not imagine the number of people chasing me, satisfying them to see me lying on the floor, bleeding, and desperately catching my breath until it is hard to catch it now.“I believe Helen now knows that you are out of the country, and she has found you here, Minerva,” he said, and he tightly clenched my hands. “Do you still want to continue your MBA?
