I did not even realize that there was media surrounding the entrance of the hotel. Their cameras blinded me, so I shrunk my eyes just so I could see clearly. The guards tried stopping them, but they kept capturing us, especially the other guests in front of us.

“Mr. Rodriguez! Please let us have an interview!”

“May we know what is your next project in the city?”

“What can you say about the new elected president of the country? Mr. Karlo Rodriguez, please answer!”

My ears were ringing of the name of the man beside me. When I looked at Karlo, that is when I realized that his hand was holding tightly on my knuckles. My eyes went down to my hand holding his wrist, his other hand was on my waist, and his head alternately looking side by side, as if we were in a pedestrian lane and he is protecting me from the fast cars which are the reporters and media trying to bump us.

It felt like a slow motion and his touch was giving electricities in my body. I should move away, but people might notice and his image would stain just because I am scared of him. Instead, I just looked away and let him drag me inside the hotel.

“Sorry,” he immediately said and let go of me when the guards closed the doors of the lobby.

“For what?” I asked while arching an eyebrow.

“For holding you. It’s just that you might get dragged by the reporters,” he answered and gulped, highlighting his thick Adam’s apple.

“What’s the big deal? They know we are husband and wife. Of course they will assume you are protecting me.”

“I am protecting you,” he emphasized.

I rolled my eyes. “You are just overreacting, like my parents,” I commented and bumped his shoulder before I went my way to the venue, following the guests with fancy dresses and suits in front of me. “Stupid guy…”

There were opened doors just not far away from the main lobby of the hallway. People in front of me were going that way, so I assumed that it was where the party is ongoing. With a high forehead and straight walk, I strode into the party, knowing that I am beautiful and elegant.

It was not new to me to enter a fancy party like this one. Champagnes. Good modern orchestra. Wealthy guests. Businessmen. Politics. Banquet. Everything felt like royal, just like the life I have been exposed to ever since I was a kid.

“Oh, my god, is that you Minerva Santiago?”

I instantly looked at the person who called my name. The excitement did not fail to show across my face and gasped when I saw one of my college friends. Helen Palma. We hugged each other and almost jumped as if we were still in high school.

“It’s been one year since I last saw you!” she exclaimed.

“I know, right, Helen?” I replied and pouted. “It felt like I was imprisoned.”

“Well…” Her smile grew wider as she looked behind me from afar. “Who would not want to be imprisoned by your hot and handsome husband?”

I furrowed my eyebrows and also looked at the direction where she was looking. I could not help but arch my eyebrow when I saw Karlo in the middle of a group of businessmen. He was having a formal smile while talking to them, but what taken me aback is the woman beside him. She was gorgeous and formal. She would whisper to his ear and they would both laugh as if what she said was funny. It angered me the way he just smiled with her. Like who the hell is she?

“Tss,” I hissed and regarded Helen who was still drooling over Karlo. “Let’s have champagne?”

Just like what Karlo said, I spent the night of the party drinking champagne with Helen who I did not see for a long time after we graduated in college. I could not even pay attention to the future married couple because Helen distracted me to her interesting life in America as a manager of cosmetic lines.

“Wow, you have become successful,” I commented. “I wish I could be like you.”

“Hmmm, that’s flattering, but no one would like to be me,” she said and guided my shoulder to the way of the balcony of the venue. “In contrary, every woman would want to be like you.”

I watched Helen closed the gap of the curtains on the doors of the balcony, shrouding the fun party behind. The balcony was silent and peaceful with the stars and city lights surrounding us. Now that we were both alone, the sparkles of her emerald dress were astonishing, but mine was more sparkling. Indeed, she was really pretty. If I were not studying in my college campus, she would be the queen bee.

“To be like me?” I echoed and giggled, now sipping my champagne. “Can you stop joking?”

“No, I am not,” she said and raised her champagne glass with a meaningful smile on her lips. “Ever since we were college, I have always admired your beauty, your talent, and your personality towards others. Not to mention your confidence and smart brain.”

I shrugged and sat on the surface of the railing. She was only watching me while playing the champagne on her glass.

“But you are also pretty, talented, and smart!” I praised her.

“Not like you, though,” she continued and her sweet smile slowly crept into an evil one. “That is why my admiration became jealousy. I did not like the idea of being the second one. And in every second, I have wanted you dead…”

I could not even have a reaction to what she was saying when she pulled out something from her purse. My eyes widened and my heart started to beat fast when I realized that it was a gun. I gasped, breathless of what she was doing. She was pointing it at me.

Why does she have a gun?!

“Helen?” I called her in fear.

She just smirked and tilted her head. “Thankfully, our families are enemies,” she said before pulling the trigger.

“Wow,” I muttered in awe.The cabin is vintage brown. From what I could see, it is three-storey with glass doors and windows. I couldn’t see the interiors because there were white curtains from the inside. A terrace was on the second floor, filled with a marble table, two chairs, and flowery plants in all corners. The whole area was vast, covered with bermuda grass, a fountain in front of the cabin’s entrance, and a variety of plans that were perfectly arranged. There was even a gazebo not far from the cabin. Even though I haven’t seen everything in this cabin, I could already guess that it is very big enough to house two to three families. I was circling around the bermuda grass. My mouth dropped and my eyes wandered in every place of the area. I touched the water of the fountain with fishes swimming on it, and looked at the sun with its rays penetrating through the branches of the tall trees. It was so peaceful and refreshing. The wind played with my hair strands, so I closed my ey

  • Hail the Mafia Queen   Chapter Seventeen: We Can’t Be Friends

Sheila and Christine introduced me to their party. I knew some of them from the classes I attended today, and the others were studying from other universities, but they know each other in the city. We were the same ages, and they were interesting to know. We had light drinks since we all have classes tomorrow. Our conversations were varied, echoed inside the VVIP room. I was laughing and talking all night, enjoying every bit of the minute, but I was also conscious of the time because my first class tomorrow is early.Karlo: Are you enjoying the party? Call me if you want to leave and I will fetch you there. I paused talking to Shiela’s group when my phone vibrated from my hand. Karlo’s text was revealed from my screen. While replying to him, my eyes crawled over the corner where I could see Victor talking to a guy. They were both sitting on the sofa - just drinking and having a small talk, observing everyone in front of them but seemingly not caring about what we were doing. Victor

Together, we went to the parking lot. When he let me inside the car, I immediately messaged my friends that I am now going to the party. They said the circles were already complete and I am the only one who is still not there. It’s not like their other friends were expecting me, but they wanted to introduce me to them, so it is merely courtesy for me to show up prepared early.“What time do you want to go home so I can fetch you?” Karlo asked in the middle of his driving. My eyes are still fixated on my Whatsapp, messaging my friends. “I’ll just call and text you,” I said.“Tsk,” I heard him hiss. “You’re a cheater, you know that? Kissing is not a combat skill.”Karlo failed to open up the topic about what happened a while ago in the training. I tried to act like it was nothing by clearing my throat and scoffing, but in truth, I was biting my lip and feeling my cheeks to be flushed in red by now while typing on my phone.“You only said that if I take you down, I win. You didn’t say wh

  • Hail the Mafia Queen   Chapter Fifteen: The Training Kiss

I keep looking at my phone during my training because the girls might text me any minute now. Karlo maintained his lecturing. Meanwhile, I am half listening to him and then taking my eyes on my phone that I put on the table under the canopy. We are in the backyard again of the building where we usually train.“Do you have any important agenda from your phone that you keep looking at it?” Karlo noticed as he placed his hands on his hips. His chest was heaving up and down after he taught me some jijitsu. “You’d better tell me that it’s more important than our training here, Minerva.”I frowned at him. He squinted his eyes, sparkling due to the lights from the walls. The moon was shining above us, but it was barely seen due to the clouds shrouding it. It was also a starless night, which I didn’t like at all. But anyway, I have a nightout. I will not let it gloom all over my mood, especially if it will be because of Karlo.“You saw my new friends, right?” I asked. He nodded.“Well, I want

Just like what Karlo said, he went to the university with me and dropped me off on campus. We didn’t say anything as I was just scrolling through my TikTok feed. Although I could feel his stares darting on my face from the driver’s seat and would just sigh at the very end.I liked my uniform because it was a mini blue striped skirt, white fitted long sleeves, with a pink ribbon tie on the top button. I was also wearing black two-inch heels, so it made me taller than I will ever be. I saw Karlo protesting about it through his gaze when I was taking mirror selfies in the living room, but he stopped himself from saying anything. I lost my hair and just clipped the sides of it, feeling like an Anime female character.“I’ll pick you up when you are done with your classes, okay?” he reminded me for the nth time when we stopped in the parking lot of the university. “Call me when you need anything.”“Karlo, I won’t call you because there’s nothing to worry about. Am I some sixteen years old t

It was so hard. My body was aching for the past days, while I was preparing for the start of my MBA. I don’t even know if Karlo would get interested in going outside since he was just too focused on our training. He would just call his secretary or the vice president of his company to check on the progress of his projects, but that’s all. He and I were inseparable inside the apartment.“You can watch TV. I’ll cook,” Karlo said and went to the kitchen.“Yeah, okay,” I said and cracked my neck as I approached the sofa in the sala.I had a long day again, training in the backyard with him. I have no idea if I am learning from our combat since he keeps being careful not to hurt me, but he would make sure that I was serious about what I was doing. I lay down on the sofa with a throw pillow under my head and heaved a long sigh, turning on the television. It did not take a long time for me to fall into a heavy sleep without even picking a good movie. When I woke up, there was a warm blanket
