I did not even realize that there was media surrounding the entrance of the hotel. Their cameras blinded me, so I shrunk my eyes just so I could see clearly. The guards tried stopping them, but they kept capturing us, especially the other guests in front of us.

“Mr. Rodriguez! Please let us have an interview!”

“May we know what is your next project in the city?”

“What can you say about the new elected president of the country? Mr. Karlo Rodriguez, please answer!”

My ears were ringing of the name of the man beside me. When I looked at Karlo, that is when I realized that his hand was holding tightly on my knuckles. My eyes went down to my hand holding his wrist, his other hand was on my waist, and his head alternately looking side by side, as if we were in a pedestrian lane and he is protecting me from the fast cars which are the reporters and media trying to bump us.

It felt like a slow motion and his touch was giving electricities in my body. I should move away, but people might notice and his image would stain just because I am scared of him. Instead, I just looked away and let him drag me inside the hotel.

“Sorry,” he immediately said and let go of me when the guards closed the doors of the lobby.

“For what?” I asked while arching an eyebrow.

“For holding you. It’s just that you might get dragged by the reporters,” he answered and gulped, highlighting his thick Adam’s apple.

“What’s the big deal? They know we are husband and wife. Of course they will assume you are protecting me.”

“I am protecting you,” he emphasized.

I rolled my eyes. “You are just overreacting, like my parents,” I commented and bumped his shoulder before I went my way to the venue, following the guests with fancy dresses and suits in front of me. “Stupid guy…”

There were opened doors just not far away from the main lobby of the hallway. People in front of me were going that way, so I assumed that it was where the party is ongoing. With a high forehead and straight walk, I strode into the party, knowing that I am beautiful and elegant.

It was not new to me to enter a fancy party like this one. Champagnes. Good modern orchestra. Wealthy guests. Businessmen. Politics. Banquet. Everything felt like royal, just like the life I have been exposed to ever since I was a kid.

“Oh, my god, is that you Minerva Santiago?”

I instantly looked at the person who called my name. The excitement did not fail to show across my face and gasped when I saw one of my college friends. Helen Palma. We hugged each other and almost jumped as if we were still in high school.

“It’s been one year since I last saw you!” she exclaimed.

“I know, right, Helen?” I replied and pouted. “It felt like I was imprisoned.”

“Well…” Her smile grew wider as she looked behind me from afar. “Who would not want to be imprisoned by your hot and handsome husband?”

I furrowed my eyebrows and also looked at the direction where she was looking. I could not help but arch my eyebrow when I saw Karlo in the middle of a group of businessmen. He was having a formal smile while talking to them, but what taken me aback is the woman beside him. She was gorgeous and formal. She would whisper to his ear and they would both laugh as if what she said was funny. It angered me the way he just smiled with her. Like who the hell is she?

“Tss,” I hissed and regarded Helen who was still drooling over Karlo. “Let’s have champagne?”

Just like what Karlo said, I spent the night of the party drinking champagne with Helen who I did not see for a long time after we graduated in college. I could not even pay attention to the future married couple because Helen distracted me to her interesting life in America as a manager of cosmetic lines.

“Wow, you have become successful,” I commented. “I wish I could be like you.”

“Hmmm, that’s flattering, but no one would like to be me,” she said and guided my shoulder to the way of the balcony of the venue. “In contrary, every woman would want to be like you.”

I watched Helen closed the gap of the curtains on the doors of the balcony, shrouding the fun party behind. The balcony was silent and peaceful with the stars and city lights surrounding us. Now that we were both alone, the sparkles of her emerald dress were astonishing, but mine was more sparkling. Indeed, she was really pretty. If I were not studying in my college campus, she would be the queen bee.

“To be like me?” I echoed and giggled, now sipping my champagne. “Can you stop joking?”

“No, I am not,” she said and raised her champagne glass with a meaningful smile on her lips. “Ever since we were college, I have always admired your beauty, your talent, and your personality towards others. Not to mention your confidence and smart brain.”

I shrugged and sat on the surface of the railing. She was only watching me while playing the champagne on her glass.

“But you are also pretty, talented, and smart!” I praised her.

“Not like you, though,” she continued and her sweet smile slowly crept into an evil one. “That is why my admiration became jealousy. I did not like the idea of being the second one. And in every second, I have wanted you dead…”

I could not even have a reaction to what she was saying when she pulled out something from her purse. My eyes widened and my heart started to beat fast when I realized that it was a gun. I gasped, breathless of what she was doing. She was pointing it at me.

Why does she have a gun?!

“Helen?” I called her in fear.

She just smirked and tilted her head. “Thankfully, our families are enemies,” she said before pulling the trigger.

“Minerva, you have a husband?” Jerlyn mumbled. They looked at Karlo behind me. I sighed in dismay.“Yes.” Kristine was the one who answered the question. “Minerva and her husband are both from mafia organizations in the Philippines. They kill people, exploit money, and are lawbreakers. They have my father now. My mother is dead, because they killed her last night.”That must be the reason why she couldn’t stop crying a while ago. From what I get now, her parents must be mafia or assassins. They were the ones who attacked me.“I didn’t get why my parents, Minerva? Why did you have to take them away, too?” Kristine said.“Because Helen investigated the people who are close to her,” Karlo answered again, which made me slap his hand, but he didn’t shut the hell up. “When she knew that your parents were government assassins in this city, she hired them and reasoned out that Minerva is an escaped fugitive from the Philippines. It was all a lie, so they could kill Minerva last night. That is

  • Hail the Mafia Queen   Chapter Thirty-Five: Victor's Death

“No, no!” I mumbled as I was glued to the floor with Victor's fall.“What have you done?! I told you not to hurt Victor, you psychopathic bitch!” Kristine shouted at Helen.Helen didn’t even budge and just blew off the smoke from the tip of her gun. “Ooops, wrong target…”I felt anger seething through my veins. My body shaking, my lips trembling, and my fists clenching. Helen cackled and pointed the gun at me again. I wasn’t threatened. I just glared at her, making sure she was not out of sight.“You will pay for this, Helen. Your blood will drench my hands. Watch it,” I said, compromising her future.“Ooooh, I’m scared. What could a spoiled brat like you do? You couldn’t even defend your parents when they were ambushed?”“Yes. Ambushed by your organization.”She bestowed a confused expression with a still grin on her lips. After a second, I could hear a chopper from outside the building. I didn’t take my eyes off her while Kristine was still crying below me with Victor in her arms. S

“Kristine! Can you please explain to me what is going on?!” I demanded as I kept dodging her knife.Last night’s memories were like a deja vu to me. I was dodging while my attackers tried to get close to me and harm me. If Karlo hadn’t arrived on time, I would have been dead for now!“I never met your mother!” I tried defending myself.“Shut up, you bitch!” she cursed and managed to elbow my chin, making me bump my back on the sink. “I’m going to fucking kill you!”Her words and rage made my skin crawl. I could see from her eyes that she is determined to kill me no matter what. I wanted to understand how I knew her mother and how she could think that I was her killer. But I don’t want to die tonight just because she is one of my precious friends. I want to protect myself! When she raised the knife again in attempting to stab me, I pushed her hard to the ground. It didn’t let her be defeated by then. She stood up hastily and rained me with stabs that I carefully dodged until I caught h

  • Hail the Mafia Queen   Chapter Thirty-Three: You Killed My Mother

There was something about the frigid voice of Kristine. It was so unusual that I got goosebumps when she ended the call. It was obvious that she had been crying, and I don’t even know the reason. Even our friends are confused. Birthdays should come with joy, not with tears.“Is everything okay? Why do you look worried?”A hand from Karlo on my shoulder was the reason why my thoughts got obliterated. I turned to him. Even Victor, behind him, was watching me silently while carrying some of the things to bring to the top floor.“It’s alright. I just spoke with Shiela and Kristine. They are coming here,” I said and lifted the sides of my lips. “Let’s go? I think we should help the guys in the pool area.”He was about to say something, but he was suddenly halted by the phone call he was receiving from his phone. Without getting away from me, he answered it with his discreet eyes still darting on me, conscious that I would be gone from his sight.“Yes. Now? Sure. I’ll go there,” he quietly

Silence prevailed between Karlo and me while we were inside the elevator. On the other hand, I could see from our both reflections that he was hovering my body from my head to toe. He wanted to comment, but he stopped himself. The elevator sounded opening, revealing numerous cars in the parking lot. Just like last night, it was completely deserted. I gulped, fear washing over me because of my overthinking mind. What if there are black figures again? What if they will attack without us knowing? What if there are many now?“I’m here,” I heard Karlo mutter.I turned my head to my side to face him. “What?”He looked back, looking directly into my eyes. “I just want you to know… that I am here,” he assured softly. After that, I felt a warm hand on mine. I gazed at our intertwined hands, feeling comfort just by his mere touch. I nodded for a while before we went outside together. My head spun around the whole parking lot with lined-up cars, hoping to spot my friends. I heard a newly parked

“We still held the attacker as a hostage. My men are watching over him. He’s unconscious. Once he wakes up, we will interrogate him,” Karlo explained to me.I furrowed my eyebrows. “Do you think Helen is behind this?”Karlo sighed and massaged the bridge of his nose. “Well, I received news from Timothy about Ritz, your clone,” he started, and sadly looked in my eyes. “She was found dead in your mansion. That must have been the confirmation reported by her killers that that was not you.”Just the idea of having someone dead because she’s pretending to be me is terrifying. I could not imagine the number of people chasing me, satisfying them to see me lying on the floor, bleeding, and desperately catching my breath until it is hard to catch it now.“I believe Helen now knows that you are out of the country, and she has found you here, Minerva,” he said, and he tightly clenched my hands. “Do you still want to continue your MBA?
