The maids have already brought the tray with food and water the moment Karlo went outside to leave me alone. I remained staring at the ceiling, trying to fight the headache caused by what Karlo said to me a while ago.

The Red Cartel. The government. The enemies and criminals of my parents…

Everything was overwhelming, and it made me think that all of it was a foolish joke.

But if I were to make scenes that transpired last night, the shooting with guns, the men Karlo were trying to fight while carrying me, and Helen pulling out a gun to point at me, wishing me dead, it made me have goosebumps and Karlo might be telling the truth.

I slowly sat on the bed and slapped my forehead. Suddenly, a phone rang beside my table. When I looked at it, it was beside the tray. My face lit up when I realized that it was Ian on the screen. I was about to grab it, but the door opened. Karlo also looked at my ringing phone before he took it and ended the call. I gasped in shock, my mouth dropping at what he did, as he turned off my phone and l stashing it in my pockets.

“What are you doing?!” I exclaimed in frantically.

“I’m sorry, Minerva. For now, you can’t trust anyone,” he said and shook his head.

“But-“

That was my boyfriend!

I stopped myself from saying that and just bit my lower lip. He stared at my phone for a while before he diverted his gaze at me. I know that he saw the name of Ian on the screen, but instead of saying something, he turned his back on me and walked silently towards the door. He closed it and sighed, holding the door knob and lowering his head like he is exhausted.

“You should eat,” he whispered. “At least you can gain your strength again.”

“I need my phone, Karlo,” I demanded.

“Your life is in danger and yet you are still thinking about your boyfriend,” he said and clenched his jaw.

“So you knew about Ian?”

Karlo lifted his head to regard me. He shifted his weight and stashed his hands in his pockets.

“I know everything about you,” he claimed. “And I am telling you right now that that guy you have been seeing is not good for you. He will just take advantage of you and your wealth. And God knows if he is a hired assassin to kill you.”

“You do not have the right to insult Ian!”

“I am not insulting him. I am just telling the truth-“

“He loves me!”

“And I fucking love you!”

The moment I raised my voice, he also snapped and made his voice louder and authoritative. I could even see the veins protruding from his neck, his chest heaving up and down, and his fists clenching. My lips parted, taken aback by the frustration across his expression.

“I do not care if you do not love me. You just have to let me protect you just like I promised to your parents, whether you like it or not, because I am your husband and you are my wife,” he said firmly. “You are the Red Cartel Queen now. The moment you are dead, many lives will be at stake, including this country.”

“I have no idea whether to believe you or not. To me, you are speaking gibberish.”

“Then why don’t you eat first and come with me the moment you are full? Seems like you are now fine, so I can show you that what I am saying is true.”

After bombarding those last words, he slammed the door angrily. I was also irritated because of his attitude. But mine was worse, though, I know. Who would not have a tantrum like this when he just grabbed my phone and ended the call from Ian? How could he?

Red Carted Queen, my ass…

Karlo was true to his words when he urged me to take a bath and dress myself up. Even though he was demanding me to come with him, I could hear from his tone that he was also worried. Maybe because I just came from fainting and sleeping the whole day, but because I was also desperate to know the absurd things he has been saying to me, I showed him that I was fine.

We were silent as usual in the car while he was driving. Though I was looking outside the window with my hand under my chin, I could sense him alternately looking at me. Eyes on the road, baby. You don’t want us to die young.

After fifteen minutes of driving, I heard him sigh like he was defeated.

“I’m sorry,” he uttered, making me look at him. “I did not mean to shout at you. I was just… irritated.”

“It’s fine,” I said. “I just want to see what you want me to know.”

He nodded. “We’re almost there.”

He made right turns and stopped in front of a mediocre hotel not far from our mansion. At first, I arched my eyebrow because I was confused why we are here. But I did not make any complaints when he started to go outside his car. He opened the door for me, so I followed.

We entered the hotel discreetly. It was just a normal hotel for normal people, so we were like out of place since I am wearing a fancy summer dress while he was wearing a suit, as if he was going to work. The rest of the people inside were just… ordinary.

After a while, we went inside the elevator, then he pressed the thirteenth button. I was getting bored because I knew that this was just stupid. I would have opened my mouth to say something, but before I could argue, the elevator opened and the dark hallway emerged from our eyes.

It was not a typical hallway with a bunch of room doors. There was only one door at the center where we were heading. I could feel my heart beating as I read the small placard of the door.

Red Cartel.

“Minerva, you have a husband?” Jerlyn mumbled. They looked at Karlo behind me. I sighed in dismay.“Yes.” Kristine was the one who answered the question. “Minerva and her husband are both from mafia organizations in the Philippines. They kill people, exploit money, and are lawbreakers. They have my father now. My mother is dead, because they killed her last night.”That must be the reason why she couldn’t stop crying a while ago. From what I get now, her parents must be mafia or assassins. They were the ones who attacked me.“I didn’t get why my parents, Minerva? Why did you have to take them away, too?” Kristine said.“Because Helen investigated the people who are close to her,” Karlo answered again, which made me slap his hand, but he didn’t shut the hell up. “When she knew that your parents were government assassins in this city, she hired them and reasoned out that Minerva is an escaped fugitive from the Philippines. It was all a lie, so they could kill Minerva last night. That is

  • Hail the Mafia Queen   Chapter Thirty-Five: Victor's Death

“No, no!” I mumbled as I was glued to the floor with Victor's fall.“What have you done?! I told you not to hurt Victor, you psychopathic bitch!” Kristine shouted at Helen.Helen didn’t even budge and just blew off the smoke from the tip of her gun. “Ooops, wrong target…”I felt anger seething through my veins. My body shaking, my lips trembling, and my fists clenching. Helen cackled and pointed the gun at me again. I wasn’t threatened. I just glared at her, making sure she was not out of sight.“You will pay for this, Helen. Your blood will drench my hands. Watch it,” I said, compromising her future.“Ooooh, I’m scared. What could a spoiled brat like you do? You couldn’t even defend your parents when they were ambushed?”“Yes. Ambushed by your organization.”She bestowed a confused expression with a still grin on her lips. After a second, I could hear a chopper from outside the building. I didn’t take my eyes off her while Kristine was still crying below me with Victor in her arms. S

“Kristine! Can you please explain to me what is going on?!” I demanded as I kept dodging her knife.Last night’s memories were like a deja vu to me. I was dodging while my attackers tried to get close to me and harm me. If Karlo hadn’t arrived on time, I would have been dead for now!“I never met your mother!” I tried defending myself.“Shut up, you bitch!” she cursed and managed to elbow my chin, making me bump my back on the sink. “I’m going to fucking kill you!”Her words and rage made my skin crawl. I could see from her eyes that she is determined to kill me no matter what. I wanted to understand how I knew her mother and how she could think that I was her killer. But I don’t want to die tonight just because she is one of my precious friends. I want to protect myself! When she raised the knife again in attempting to stab me, I pushed her hard to the ground. It didn’t let her be defeated by then. She stood up hastily and rained me with stabs that I carefully dodged until I caught h

  • Hail the Mafia Queen   Chapter Thirty-Three: You Killed My Mother

There was something about the frigid voice of Kristine. It was so unusual that I got goosebumps when she ended the call. It was obvious that she had been crying, and I don’t even know the reason. Even our friends are confused. Birthdays should come with joy, not with tears.“Is everything okay? Why do you look worried?”A hand from Karlo on my shoulder was the reason why my thoughts got obliterated. I turned to him. Even Victor, behind him, was watching me silently while carrying some of the things to bring to the top floor.“It’s alright. I just spoke with Shiela and Kristine. They are coming here,” I said and lifted the sides of my lips. “Let’s go? I think we should help the guys in the pool area.”He was about to say something, but he was suddenly halted by the phone call he was receiving from his phone. Without getting away from me, he answered it with his discreet eyes still darting on me, conscious that I would be gone from his sight.“Yes. Now? Sure. I’ll go there,” he quietly

Silence prevailed between Karlo and me while we were inside the elevator. On the other hand, I could see from our both reflections that he was hovering my body from my head to toe. He wanted to comment, but he stopped himself. The elevator sounded opening, revealing numerous cars in the parking lot. Just like last night, it was completely deserted. I gulped, fear washing over me because of my overthinking mind. What if there are black figures again? What if they will attack without us knowing? What if there are many now?“I’m here,” I heard Karlo mutter.I turned my head to my side to face him. “What?”He looked back, looking directly into my eyes. “I just want you to know… that I am here,” he assured softly. After that, I felt a warm hand on mine. I gazed at our intertwined hands, feeling comfort just by his mere touch. I nodded for a while before we went outside together. My head spun around the whole parking lot with lined-up cars, hoping to spot my friends. I heard a newly parked

“We still held the attacker as a hostage. My men are watching over him. He’s unconscious. Once he wakes up, we will interrogate him,” Karlo explained to me.I furrowed my eyebrows. “Do you think Helen is behind this?”Karlo sighed and massaged the bridge of his nose. “Well, I received news from Timothy about Ritz, your clone,” he started, and sadly looked in my eyes. “She was found dead in your mansion. That must have been the confirmation reported by her killers that that was not you.”Just the idea of having someone dead because she’s pretending to be me is terrifying. I could not imagine the number of people chasing me, satisfying them to see me lying on the floor, bleeding, and desperately catching my breath until it is hard to catch it now.“I believe Helen now knows that you are out of the country, and she has found you here, Minerva,” he said, and he tightly clenched my hands. “Do you still want to continue your MBA?
