The world didn’t stop, but something in me did. The moment I saw him, everything else fell away—the music, the people around, even Varic’s arms tightening around me seemed like a distant feeling.

There he was—Gregory Valdwell. It was only a few months since I had seen him, but he looked different. His frame was taller than I remembered and he wore a navy blue suit with a crystal pin on his lapel. His limp was gone of course, but his eyes were the same. Sharp, arrogant, hungry, like the last time I had seen him. His lips were curled into a smug smirk like he owned the place. I couldn’t believe how long I had spent under the same roof with him but still didn’t know him.

Why was he here? I thought as my feet faltered—I was thankful for Varic’s arm around me. Then I remembered it was an event all the Alphas were supposed to attend. Why hadn’t I thought of that before? Maybe because I didn’t even know he was an Alpha until he walked. I felt nausea curl in my stomach at the thought of meetin

Nadia's pov The night was so dark and although we could see clearly at night, the night had an eerie feeling to it. I wrapped my cloak tighter as we slipped between the trees towards the direction from the map. The safe house vanished behind us in moments, swallowed by the forest, and only the crunch of our boots against the damp soil marked our path forward. We walked in silence, every step deliberate. My injured arm throbbed with each movement, but I forced the pain aside. We had distance to cover before dawn, and hesitation could cost us more than I was willing to pay.The air smelled of pine and wet earth, but beneath it lingered something sharper animal, musky. I slowed, tilting my head, ears straining against the night. Elara caught the shift in my pace and leaned in.“What is it?” she whispered.I didn’t answer at first. Then the sound came again: faint padding, heavier than a deer, lighter than a bear. A lone step, then silence. Something was trailing us.A moment later, the

Nadia's pov I didn’t remember closing my eyes. One moment I was staring at the cracked ceiling, willing myself to stay awake, and the next I jolted upright with a sharp gasp. My chest heaved, my hand instantly going to my side where the bandages were wrapped tight.Elara was already there. She steadied me with a hand on my shoulder. “Easy. You’re safe for now.”I blinked at her, disoriented, then rubbed at my face. “How long was I out?”“Not long. A couple of hours. You needed it.” Her voice was calm, but the shadows under her eyes betrayed her own exhaustion.I shook my head, the words tumbling out before I could stop them. “This was a trap. The rumor about the cure… it was meant to draw me out.”Elara didn’t deny it. She just leaned back, folding her arms. “You knew it was dangerous when you came. Greg’s clever. He knew you’d take the bait.”I clenched my fists, anger sparking in my chest again. “He wants me to burn myself out chasing him. He wants me broken.”“Then don’t give him

Nadia's pov The rations scraped dry down my throat, and with each swallow, the weight on my chest seemed to double. I felt the pain on my arm as my hand throbbed under the bandage, but the ache in my heart was heavier. I leaned back against the chair as I felt a wave of exhaustion.Elara was still chewing quietly, though her eyes weren’t on the food. They were on the door, sharp but alert. She stood there silently pacing around from time to time to look out the windows of the safe house checking to see if anyone was coming close to the safe house and she was at it for a while, restless. “You should rest,” I whispered with a hoarse voice. She turned to look at me as she shook her head. “Someone has to be on the lookout,” She whispered. I gave a faint, bitter smile. “If you keep at it, then we’ll both be exhausted at this rate. We can take turns being on the lookout.” I said to her but the truth was, I couldn’t keep my eyes open much longer. My body was demanding surrender, no matte

Nadia's pov We slowly made our way to the front porch of the safe house. The moonlight barely cut through the thick trees when we reached the old wooden cabin. The old wooden cabin was almost swallowed by vines and years of neglect and the building was already getting old but still stood strong. “This is one of the pack’s safe houses,” I told Elara, I said weakly. My arm still hurt like crazy and we needed to take care of this wound on my arm as soon as possible. During the skirmish I had narrowly escaped the claws of a werewolf that had lunged at me with intent to kill. Narrowly escaping with a deep scratch on my arm. Elara stared at the building with a concerned expression on her face. “You sure this is the place?” she asked as she helped me towards the front porch. “Yes, It borders the outskirts of our territory. I only learned about it when I was digging through the pack’s history and old layouts in the archives. Most people have forgotten it even exists.”Elara gave an unde

Nadia's pov The night was quiet, unnaturally so, the kind of silence that presses into your bones and makes your heartbeat feel loud. We had just cleared the first wave of attacks, our small group battered but unbroken. Two of my men had taken minor injuries, nothing that would slow us down but the tension in the air was palpable. Every rustle, every distant howl made me tighten my grip on my sword.“I want eyes on all sides,” I ordered, my voice sharp. “No mistakes. Not this time.”Elara moved beside me, her presence a steady anchor in the chaos. “Nadia… they’re regrouping,” she warned, her voice low, calm but urgent.I nodded, already scanning the shadows, trying to anticipate the next strike. And then it came the second wave.A mass of fur, teeth, and glowing eyes descended on us from the treeline. Wolves, larger than any I had seen before, their snarls echoing like a chorus of nightmares. The wind carried their stench sharp, raw, wild.“Form up! Circle!” I barked, driving my men
