LOGINSelina's POV
The morning moved quickly when there was work to do.... I had the baby settled with the nurse by eight-thirty and the apartment to myself by nine, which was the window I needed. Not long... the kind of morning that required focus rather than duration. I opened the laptop The contact from last night had sent through his preliminary questions on the encrypted channel.... specific, professional, the kind of questions thatAlex's POV Sixteen hours before the photograph reached us, I was happy. I need that to be true. The massage therapists arrived at one. Two women in gray tunics carrying folding tables. Marcus checked their bags, their phones, and their names against a list. Then he stood at the terrace door with his back to us and didn't turn around. Maya lay on the table beside mine with her face toward me. The awning shut out the sun. The women worked for an hour without speaking. When Maya's therapist reached her lower back, her eyes closed and the muscle between her shoulder blades let go. It had been hard for three weeks. "There," she said, almost to herself. The women packed up at two. Marcus walked them to the gate. "Your shoulders," Maya said. "They're fine...." "Alex." I sat up on the table. She knelt behind me and pressed both thumbs into the base of my neck. I hadn't known how tight I was until she found it. "You carry everything here," she said. "So do you." "Switch.
Maya's POV Iris woke at one. I heard her through the monitor first, a thin crackle of complaint, then a full cry. By the time I had my feet on the floor, Alex was already up and sliding his arm out of the sleeve of a shirt he hadn't buttoned.... "I've got her," he said. "We both do...." The nurse slept in the room past the kitchen. We didn't wake her. We went down the dark hall together, barefoot on the cool tile, past the shuttered windows and the long pale rectangles the moon laid across the floor... Iris lay in the crib with her fists up and her face red and furious. I lifted her. She smelled of milk and warm linen. Alex warmed the bottle in the little kitchenette and tested it on his wrist like a man defusing a bomb. I sat in the rocking chair by the window and took it from him, and she latched with a small outraged sigh. He stood behind me with his hands on the back of the chair I felt his gaze on the top of my head, warm, steady. Beyond the window the water lay
Maya's POV "I haven't." "I'd understand if you wanted him to burn." "I did. For about a week." I looked at the water. "I stood at the foot of that bed in the study and watched him beg me, and I wanted him to bleed. I wanted the world to read his name the way it read my father's...." I pushed back from the table and stood. My knees held. I walked to the balustrade and put my hands on the warm stone, and the cool air came up off the water against my face. "But I remember his hand," I said. "On the glass. In the living room, the morning he came with the file. He could not get it to his mouth without it shaking. He had carried that for nine years, and it had worn him down to a man who couldn't hold a glass of water." My throat tightened. "He sat beside me for four days in the dark. You told me that. He sat there, and I came up out of it and told him to leave...." Alex had risen. He stood a few feet behind me and did not touch me "I don't forgive him," I said
Maya's POV I woke to the sound of my husband explaining shipping to our daughter. The bed was empty beside me, the sheet cool where he had been. Gray light came in through the open shutters, and from the terrace his voice carried low and unhurried, the voice he used when he forgot anyone could hear him. "Blue funnel, white band. That's a Meridian feeder. Your mother's. See how she sits? Low in the water, fully loaded." A pause. "The red one is slower and has worse manners. We don't discuss the red one." I got up and crossed the tile in bare feet. I stopped at the edge of the doorway, where the shutter hid me. He sat in the wicker chair with his shirt untucked and his feet on the balustrade. Iris lay asleep along his forearm, her cheek against the crook of his elbow and her pink cap gone crooked. Behind them the water lay flat and pearl-colored, and a small freighter crawled across it toward the far headland, trailing a thin white line. He raised one finger and traced the s
ALEX POV The candlelight found the thin pale line low across her belly, and the new soft curve of her. She flinched. Her hands rose to cover it. I lowered them, one at a time, and held them.I undressed her slowly. When the last piece of clothing fell, she hesitated, one hand hovering near the soft curve of her belly. I went to my knees.I kissed the skin there. The faint scars. The place that had stretched and fought and held. “Motherhood made you more beautiful,” I said against her. “Not less. More.” Her breath caught. I worked my hands up her back, thumbs pressing into the tight muscles along her shoulders, then down the line of her spine, over the flare of her hips, the strong muscles of her thighs. She made a low sound. I stood, kissed her, and let my hands settle on her ass, pulling her against me. She moaned softly into my ear. I went back down.... My mouth traced her belly button, then the scars again, slower. I squeezed her ass and felt her shiver
ALEX'S POV A little milk escaped the corner of Iris's lips. Maya reached over and caught it with her thumb, and the touch lingered on our daughter's cheek. She is still here. Our daughter is still here. The missing piece aches, but this piece is warm and breathing. On the far shore the sun cleared the ridge, and the water lit all at once from edge to edge. Maya leaned her head against my knee, and neither of us said his name. We walked at sunset.A path ran along the shoreline below the villa, hard-packed earth between low pines and a strip of gray pebble beach. Iris slept in the carrier against my chest, one cheek squashed flat against my sternum. Maya set the pace, slow, with a hand at her side. I kept my eyes on the path and the trees and the dark places between them, because I could not stop doing it. Marcus's men had stepped back to a hundred yards. I could feel them there like a hand at my back. "Marcus sent an update at lunch," I said....
Maya’s POVI stayed until the last possible minute. Not because there was work left. Because I needed time to rebuild the mask.By the time I stepped into the executive hallway leading to the private parking garage, my heels clicked with deliberate calm. My makeup was fresh, concealer over the red
Maya’s POV“She is two months pregnant.”“I can’t believe it,” Mason’s voice carried through the cracked boardroom door, low and reverent, the way he used to speak to me only in our earliest days before the miscarriages, before the silence grew between us like frost on glass. “Two months?”My fing
Maya’s POVThe air in Mason’s office thickened the second I turned back toward the door. Selina moved first quick, theatrical reaching out as if to grab my arm in some mockery of concern.“Maya, wait……”Her fingers brushed my sleeve.I reacted on instinct. A small, sharp push just enough to create
Maya's POV I lifted my chin, Selina is there beside Mason, in a romantic posture. “How do you sleep at night, Selina, with all that evil sitting on your chest like a stone?”She laughed soft, delighted. “Easily. Because I finally stopped pretending to be the good girl who waits for her turn”I lo
