“You are joking, right? Why on earth would I marry you? I’m still dealing with one heartbreak, and you’re just going to throw the marriage word around like it’s nothing?” I let out.

“Well, it is actually nothing because it’s only a contract marriage. A marriage of convenience where we both help each other get what we want.”

“My family wants me to get married. It's a good look for my status. So I need the marriage for my family, and you need it for revenge!” I watched with shock as he spoke with arrogance.

I’d just gotten my heart broken and here I was listening to another man tell me he wanted to use me. I was nothing more to him than a means to an end. I don’t care about what he has to offer, I refuse to be another man’s fool. As for revenge, I’ll get that myself.

“That’s it, I’m leaving. I can’t take this anymore,” I said, and then turned to leave.

I expected him to stop me again, but he didn’t until I was at the door.

“You have twenty-four hours, let me know what you decide!”

I left without saying another word, but as I got in my car, a crazy idea came up. I decided to go to Kate and confront her. Will obviously isn't going to admit it, but maybe Kate would. We’ve been together for years, so that has to count for something.

I drove off to her art gallery and it was unusually quiet. I entered and was captivated by the new artwork. Kate is a good painter, that was what attracted me to her back then. My dad liked that too, so after college, he opened a big gallery for her, and even got his billionaire friends to invest in her.

I can’t believe she forgot that so soon and is now repaying me with a shameful betrayal like this.

I slowly made my way to her office but then stopped when I started hearing voices coming from inside. The male voice sounded familiar, so I moved closer to the door. That was when I realized it was Will. They were arguing.

Kate was still mad about the proposal, and he was apologizing. He promised to make it up to her that weekend on an expense trip where he would also propose to her.

I felt my body go cold and was going to barge in until I heard Kate reveal their real plans.

“You know for someone who keeps saying he has no intention of marrying her, you seem too loved up!” She let out and my eyes went so big then. I felt it almost popping from their sockets.

Apparently, Will has no intention of marrying me. He’s only after my money and inheritance, which he would steal and then elope with Kate.

“I’ve been trying to get her to sign over some properties, but she has been unyielding. She keeps them in her name or both our names,” Will explained while Kate smirked.

“I know right, that b*tch is too full of herself. She thinks you don’t deserve to have more just because her father is a billionaire. I bet she’d be so poor if her family wasn’t rich. Oh my goodness, I f*cking loathe her!”

“See the goosebumps on my skin? That’s my skin crawling at the thought of that b*tch!” I froze when I heard Kate say those words.

I just couldn’t believe it, but that wasn’t all. They were just getting started.

“I know right. That’s why I proposed last night. I sense she’s being reluctant because I haven’t shown deep commitment. With the proposal, I’m sure she’d trust me enough to hand over the properties. Everything else would be gotten on the wedding day. She would think she’s signing our wedding papers not knowing she’s signing over her inheritance to me.” He let out while Kate chuckled.

“And I will become your wife that same day. Once you get the documents, we will leave in another car, get wedded, and she’ll never see us or her money again,” she relayed happily.

I just couldn’t believe any of the things I heard, so I spied through the door. Luckily, it wasn’t all closed, so I could see their faces. They had even started making out again. I knew I had to record them, but I was already feeling dizzy. I tripped while trying to get my phone and it made a sound. I knew I’d tipped them off when they went silent. I couldn’t let them see me there so I ran out before they could come out to check.

I immediately got in my car and zoomed off. I kept driving while tears flooded my face till I couldn’t see clearly. I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t see the red light and then drove off. I didn’t even realize I wasn’t in my lane anymore until that loud honk jerked me back to life.

I looked ahead and saw the big truck approaching at full speed, honking loudly, and blazing its full light.

I swerved to the side, stepped hard on the brakes and then finally stopped just before crashing into a ditch.

For a second, I froze while the realization of what had just happened dawned on me. I could have died just now. And all because of what? A man who doesn’t give a sh*t about me. A best friend that I cared for like a sister?

Tears started rolling down my face again, but I angrily wiped them off when I realized what would have happened if I had died. Will and Kate would have continued f*cking each other, steal my money and then run off to waste it all.

I had been a fool all along, but not anymore. I won’t let them play me and go scot-free. The mystery man and his strange offer came to my mind again, and I immediately decided to take it. I don’t even know his last name, but who cares? I’m about to find out!
