Chapter 4: The Easier Part

“Why?” I asked again. “Why should I stay away from him?”

Ethan shifted on his feet, the sketchbook still clutched in his hands like he didn’t know whether to give it back or use it as a shield. “Just trust me on this one, Liv.”

I almost laughed in his face.

“You spent a year teaching me not to trust you.” I crossed my arms. “And now you want me to trust your judgment about another man?”

That landed. I watched it land. His jaw flexed, but he didn’t have an answer for it, because there wasn’t one.

His eyes drifted to the contract again, still tucked under my arm where I’d carried it all evening. “Don’t sign it,” he said suddenly. “Whatever he offered you, don’t sign it.”

“Why does it matter to you?” I asked. “You’re with Ava now. Shouldn’t you be happy I’m moving on?”

“It’s not about that.”

“Then what is it about?”

He didn’t answer. He just stood there, frustrated, like he wanted to explain something he wasn’t allowed to say.

“If Ava matters so much,” I said quietly, “why are you here? Standing outside my door at nine at night, worrying about who I sign contracts with?”

Ethan opened his mouth, then closed it again. There was no version of an answer that didn’t make him sound exactly like what he was. A man who wanted to keep his new relationship and still control what happened to the one he’d thrown away.

“Go home, Ethan,” I said, and shut the door before he could try again.

I sat on my couch for a long time after that, the contract open in my lap. The lawyer I’d met that afternoon had spent nearly an hour walking me through the agreement. She’d pointed out two clauses I should question, confirmed that nothing transferred ownership of my property to Damien, and reminded me three separate times that I didn’t have to sign simply because the terms were unusually favorable.

I read through it slower than before anyway, past the trust clause, until I reached a page near the end I hadn’t paid much attention to.

An exit clause. After one year, either of us could walk away. No penalty. No forfeited property. No strings designed to trap me into staying longer than I wanted. The lawyer had confirmed that part twice when I’d asked her about it. He had built me a door out before I’d even agreed to walk through the one in front of me.

I searched his name that night, not because I needed a mystery to solve, but because I needed to know if trusting him was foolish. Article after article said the same thing in different words. Damien Black did not make promises he didn’t keep. Business partners who worked with him for years used the word exact. Not charming. Not brilliant. Exact. A man who said a thing once and then did it.

It didn’t mean I trusted him. But after a lawyer had spent an hour finding no hidden trap in his contract, it mattered that the people who dealt with Damien professionally described the same man I had met.

My phone rang while I was still scrolling. His name on the screen.

I answered, and his voice came through low and even, like always. “Did Ethan come back?”

“How did you know he would?”

“I didn’t. I guessed.” He didn’t elaborate further, and I didn’t push. “You don’t have to tell me what he said. I only want you to know something. If you decide no, nothing in that folder leaves my side. The information about your trust stays private, and nothing I prepared gives me any claim to it.”

I sat with that for a moment, the phone pressed to my ear, something in my chest loosening that I hadn’t realized was tight. “Even if I refuse you?”

“Especially then. Your answer doesn’t change what belongs to you.”

He hung up without asking for an answer, without pushing, without reminding me of the clock running down on his deadline. He had called only to protect something of mine, even if I never gave him anything in return.

Nobody had ever offered me that. Not once. Not even when I had a ring on my finger.

My phone rang again ten minutes later. Ava this time, her voice bright and fast, already mid-sentence before I fully said hello. “Olivia, I need your opinion. We’re looking at venues, and I keep thinking about the garden one you loved, do you remember? I want your blessing, I really do, this would mean so much to me.”

She kept talking. Venues. Dresses. A future she was building out of the wreckage of mine, asking me to hand her my approval like a party favor.

I hung up without saying a word.

I sat alone afterward and stared at the contract again. For the first time, I wasn’t looking at the clauses. I was thinking about the man who wrote them.

A man who had made sure my grandmother’s trust remained entirely mine. A man who remembered how I took my coffee. A man who offered me a way out and then promised to respect my answer either way.

The realization unsettled me, because somewhere between the garden and that phone call, the contract had stopped being the thing I was afraid of.

I turned to the final page. My signature waited at the bottom. The pen felt heavier than it should have.

Not because I was afraid of marrying Damien Black.

Because I was afraid of trusting him.

My hand hovered over the line.

Then slowly, carefully, I lowered the pen.

I pulled away from him and walked toward the bedroom without answering, refusing to give him the satisfaction of another word, though I could hear him following at an unhurried pace, in no rush at all despite my obvious retreat. I reached back to unfasten my earrings, and his hands appeared before mine did, gentle and familiar, working the clasp free with the ease of a man who'd done this a hundred times before without me asking."I can do it myself," I said, though I didn't actually stop him."I'm aware. I'm choosing to help anyway." He set the earrings on the dresser, loosened his tie and shrugged out of his jacket, the particular unhurried grace that always made ordinary tasks look faintly theatrical when he did them. "Do you think this jacket needs to be retired, given the circumstances?""What circumstances.""Victoria touched the sleeve." He held it up briefly, inspecting it like evidence. "I'm asking whether it requires your approval before I wear it again, or whether we've rea

"I don't know what you mean," I said, entirely unconvincingly, keeping my eyes fixed on the streetlights sliding past outside the window rather than looking at him directly."You don't." He didn't sound remotely convinced, the corner of his mouth already threatening to become a full smile. "That's interesting, because you've had a very specific expression since I crossed the room to you, well before Victoria's story even started.""I'm allowed to have expressions, Damien.""You are. This particular one seemed to appear directly after a woman put her hand on my arm." His thumb moved slowly against my fingers while his eyes remained properly on the road, his amusement obvious even without him looking at me. "I only mention it because you're normally significantly better at hiding things from me.""I wasn't hiding anything. There was nothing to hide."He made a low, unconvinced sound and let it sit there, entirely too pleased with himself, while my irritation sharpened at how thoroughly

"What does that mean?" I asked, before Damien could redirect the conversation toward anything safer, and I caught the small, resigned sigh he gave beside me, clearly already anticipating exactly where this was headed."Do not encourage her," Damien said, glancing at Victoria with a look that carried years of practiced warning behind it, though the corner of his mouth betrayed him entirely."I'm going to encourage her considerably," I said, and Victoria laughed, delighted, already leaning slightly toward me like a woman settling in to tell a story she'd clearly enjoyed retelling for years."Years ago, I brought a proposal into his office," Victoria said. "One projection buried in the middle was wrong, a small error in the growth model, easy enough to miss if you weren't looking for it specifically.""He was looking for it specifically," I guessed."He found it within the first four minutes." Victoria's smile widened. "Ended the meeting on the spot. Didn't raise his voice, didn't explai

I accepted her hand, matching her open expression with something more careful but not unfriendly. "That sounds ominous, depending on the reason.""Not remotely ominous. I've been following New Ground's expansion." She fell into step beside me as the crowd began drifting toward the main room, waiters weaving between guests collecting empty glasses, the whole evening shifting into its next movement. "Your privacy protections are genuinely unusual. Most programme leaders would have accepted identifiable stories the moment that much funding was placed in front of them. You didn't.""It nearly cost me the whole funding offer.""I heard something about that. Not the details, only that you held your ground." She said it plainly, no probing for the specifics I hadn't offered, and something in the restraint made it easier to relax slightly beside her. "It's rare. Most people fold the moment the money gets large enough.""I nearly did fold, for what it's worth.""But you didn't." She glanced si

Damien said something brief to the group around him, and they let him go easily enough, one of them raising his glass in a small farewell salute as Damien turned and started crossing the room toward me, holding my gaze the entire way with an expression that made the distance feel considerably longer than it actually was. A waiter slid past with a tray, murmuring an apology, and I stepped aside without breaking eye contact, watching Damien navigate the crowd with the easy, unhurried confidence of a man who never once seemed to worry about where he was walking. He stopped in front of me and extended his hand, entirely formal, an amused glint sitting beneath the composed surface. "Damien Black.""Olivia Hart," I said, placing my hand in his."I know." His thumb moved once against my palm, and instead of releasing me, he let the contact linger well beyond anything a genuine stranger would have permitted. His gaze dropped briefly to where our hands still met before returning to my face. "Y

  • He Chose My Sister, So I Married His Enemy   Chapter 251: I Didn’t Like Her Hand on My Husband

"The training pipeline's the bottleneck," I said, gesturing loosely with my glass toward the funder in front of me, a stocky man named Reyes who'd been peppering me with questions about regional timelines for the better part of ten minutes. "We can hire regional leads faster than we can properly train the staff underneath them."Across the room, Damien reached for his own glass, an unhurried, ordinary motion, and in doing so shifted his weight just enough that Victoria's hand slid off his sleeve without either of them seeming to notice it had happened at all. He turned slightly toward another man beside him, some new thread of conversation picking up, and Victoria's hand simply settled back at her side, nothing dramatic in it, no visible retreat on her part, just the plain, unremarkable fact of him no longer being within easy reach."So Grace is managing the first region alone right now," Reyes said, and I dragged my attention back properly, embarrassed at how quickly it had wandered.
