DAVIS POVBy evening, Mai has spent most of her time playing and resting in the living room. She looks much better than she did when we brought her home from the hospital, and I’m glad to see her getting her energy back. Nora comes downstairs after preparing her things for the night.“Mai, it's time to go to bed.”Mai looks at her, then turns towards me.“Uncle, are you going to sleep too?”I smile. “Yes, little one. It's getting late.”She reaches for Nora's hand, and Nora takes it.“Come on, sweetheart. Let's go upstairs.”Mai waves at me as Nora leads her towards the staircase.“Goodnight, Uncle.”“Goodnight, Mai. Instead, I carry Mai further into the living room and gently place her on the couch.“Make yourself comfortable, little one.”She adjusts her position and looks around the room.I turn towards Nora, who is still standing near the entrance with Mai's bag.“You can prepare something for her to eat and get her medication ready. She needs to eat before taking it.”“Alright,” she answers.I watch her walk towards the kitchen before turning my attention back to Mai.“Are you hungry?”She nods. “A little.”“Then we'll get you something to eat.”I sit beside her, making sure she's comfortable. Her fever has gone down, and she no longer complains about her headache as often as she did when she was first brought to the hospital.I've continued handling my work during these two days, but I've also made time to visit the hospital and check on Nora and Mai. Nora has barely left Mai's side. Even when she rests, I can still see the worry on her face.The doctor comes in later that morning to check on Mai. Nora moves closer to the bed while I remain beside her, watching as he examines her and listening as he asks a few questions about how she's feeling.Mai answers him quietly, saying her head doesn't hurt as much as it did before.The doctor checks her temperature and reviews her treatment before telling us that she's responding well. Her head is tilted slightly to one side, and she looks more tired than she was last night.I check the time on my phone. It's still early.A nurse comes in a few minutes later to check on Mai. We're at the hospital now. The doctor has examined her and said she has malaria.”“I hope it’s not something too serious?” “Not really. The doctor said they need to start her treatment and monitor her for some days before she can be discharged.”I let out a slow breath. “Which hospital are you at?”She tells me the name, and I take a moment to process what she's saying.“Have they started treating her?”“Not yet.
