Chapter 2

Author: Corn 88
“Didn't you say the original research behind that system was the last thing your mother left you, and that you'd never sell it?”

"I'm only selling the rights to use it, not the ownership."

After a brief pause, I added, "But I need the money immediately."

The line went quiet for a moment.

"What happened?"

"My mom needs surgery," I said.

Rowan Langley, a professor at the research institute, did not press me for details.

He said, "I'll contact the finance department now. We can make the initial licensing payment within two hours."

I closed my eyes and thanked him.

Two hours later, I had the money in hand and rushed to the hospital. I sat outside the operating room. My palms were slick with cold sweat.

Just then, my phone rang with a call from Preston, but I did not answer.

Moments later, a text appeared on my screen.

[Are you done making a scene?]

Another text followed almost immediately.

[Come home tonight. I can pretend none of this ever happened.]

I stared at the two texts before slowly deleting everything.

Then, I opened my email and sent a formal notice to Preston's company.

[Due to a material breach by the licensee of the core technology, we have decided to terminate the license for the healthcare risk management system. The license will officially terminate in seventy-two hours.]

The hospital hallway was bathed in pale light, yet for the first time, I felt the tightness in my chest begin to ease.

Preston called me soon after. I answered but did not speak first.

Barely restraining his anger, he asked, "What does the notice you sent to the company mean?"

"It's exactly as it states."

"Tara, the company has been licensed to use that system for three years. Do you have any idea how much we will lose if you suddenly terminate the license?"

"I do," I said.

"Yet you're still going through with it?"

I stared at the closed doors of the operating room.

"Didn't you say that a businessperson should care about value and return on investment? When you gave Mallory three million dollars to gain some experience, you must've calculated the potential loss as well."

After a brief silence, he said, "That's different."

"How so?"

"You can't use company business to act out of spite."

"So, you can use company money to bankroll Mallory's gamble, but when I reclaim my own technology, I'm suddenly acting out of spite?"

Preston's voice turned cold.

"Tara, don't bring your personal feelings into this."

"Personal feelings?"

I looked at my hands.

"I gave you three million dollars from my savings while we were engaged and brought in the company's first clients. Also, I developed the core system myself.

"You turned everything I contributed into company assets and reduced me to an unemployed fiancee who did nothing but spend money. Now, you dare tell me not to bring my personal feelings into this?"

He paused, then said, "That three million was an investment you made willingly."

"Of course."

When Preston first started his company, he had less than a hundred thousand dollars in his account. He slept at the office every night and said, "Tara, once the company survives, I'll give you the most spectacular wedding ever."

I transferred three million dollars from my savings to him.

Later, I brought in the company's first clients and handed over the system I had developed through countless sleepless nights. The company finally got off the ground.

But whenever Preston introduced me to others, he only ever called me his fiancee.

When people asked about the company's original funding and technology, he laughed and said, "She just helped out with a few small things."

I always let it go, but by then, every detail he had so casually dismissed felt like a thorn driven deep in my heart.

"Don't push me, Tara," Preston said in a low voice.

"I'm not pushing you. You're the one who taught me this."

"Taught you what?"

"Not to place my hopes in someone else."

With that, I hung up.

Mom's surgery lasted three hours. When the doctor finally came out, he told me that the surgery was a success, but she would need to remain in the ICU for observation.

I finally let out a sigh of relief.

Before I could fully collect myself, Rowan's assistant approached me at the hospital entrance and handed me a document.

"This is the licensing agreement. The initial payment has already been deposited."

I took the document and turned to the final page, where I found an additional clause.

If Preston's company continued using the system, it would have to pay subsequent licensing fees at market rates and could not sublicense it to any third party without authorization.

I took out my phone and sent the clause to my lawyer, Darryl Corderman.

"Find out whether they have sublicensed it to anyone."

Three years later, TaraWell Health Risk officially launched. The platform did more than provide financial risk management for major healthcare institutions. It also created compliant pathways for financial assistance for ordinary families who could not afford the high cost of medical treatment.Among the first cases on the assistance list when the platform launched was that of a sixteen-year-old girl whose mother needed surgery for an acute illness but could not come up with the money in time. When the project lead handed me the documents, I fell silent for a long time. At that moment, I suddenly remembered the day Mom was rushed into the ICU."Activate the emergency assistance.""Ms. Wingfield, this funding carries a high level of risk," my assistant said.I looked at the documents."Some people can't afford to wait for the so-called return on investment when they need money the most."The project was completed successfully. That evening, I went to Mom's grave and found a fre

I registered a new company and started with a team of just four. Rowan served as our technical advisor, Darryl handled compliance, I oversaw projects and financing, and we brought in a financial advisor with a background in hospital finance. The early days of my new venture were far from easy. Some people refused to work with me the moment they heard I was Preston's former fiancee, while others asked outright, "Ms. Wingfield, are you starting this company to prove you're better than Mr. Guest?"I set down my coffee cup and said, "No. I'm doing this to prove that I don't need him to succeed at anything."Our first bid was against Preston's former employer. Although Preston Tech had already suspended him, he still used his old connections to pressure clients. He went around and said, "Tara Wingfield only knows technology. She doesn't understand business. Put her in charge of a project, and something will go wrong sooner or later."At the bidding meeting, the client posed a difficu

40% of the shares in Mallory's company were registered in the name of Arnold Guest, Preston's father. Two years ago, those shares were transferred to Preston through a gift agreement. In other words, Preston had long arranged a fallback plan for Mallory. Once Preston Tech secured financing and Mallory obtained the technology, Preston could use her company to transfer assets. Those three million dollars were actually the first bargaining chip he had prepared for his marriage to Mallory. When I received the investigation report, I suddenly felt the last bit of hope I had left fade away.'The man I once loved had never been confused or oblivious. He had already made a clear-headed decision to leave me out of his future,' I thought. The next time Preston came to see me, I placed the documents in front of him."Explain this."He stared at the documents for a long time without saying a word."That was my dad's own arrangement," he finally said."Why did he give the shares to Mallory

After a long silence, Mom reached up and patted my head."Just part ways then."She neither asked me for a reason nor told me to endure it.She simply said, "You've always been more capable than he ever was. Don't let a man leave you with nowhere to call home."I lowered my head, and my eyes began to sting. For the past three years, I had thought of Preston as my home. I finally realized that my mom had always been the one person who stood by me unconditionally, and I had almost lost her because of him.Preston tried to use the company's legal team to delay the investigation. He issued a public statement claiming that the three million dollars was a standard project investment, and that Tara Wingfield was merely a former technical consultant for Preston Tech. He claimed that I had made that investment voluntarily as his fiancee. As soon as the statement was released, I had a formal legal notice delivered to his company. At the same time, I submitted the nominee shareholding a

I opened the final file on the hard drive. The server logs showed that Preston's personal account had given the final approval for the perpetual license agreement, and the file had been uploaded the same day Mom was rushed into the ICU.That night, I had desperately begged him to lend me three hundred thousand dollars. He told me his money was not for charity, all while using my R&D funds to bankroll Mallory's project.Preston's expression changed.I held his gaze and said slowly, "Preston, do you really think I came here today to get you back?"The investigation lasted an entire week.Preston was suspended from all his positions at Preston Tech, while Mallory was restricted from leaving the country.Videos from the launch event spread rapidly online. At first, everyone assumed the jilted fiancee had turned bitter and was deliberately sabotaging her former fiance's efforts to help her best friend start a business. But once the full recording and server logs came to light, publi

Preston stepped in front of me and said, "This is no place for you to make a scene.""You're holding a launch event with my technology, yet you're accusing me of making a scene?"Several people in the audience raised their phones.Mallory picked up the microphone and said softly, "Everyone, please don't misunderstand. Ms. Wingfield used to be Preston's fiancee. They had some personal issues, so there seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the license."As she spoke, she brought up a document on the large screen."This is the perpetual license agreement that Ms. Wingfield personally signed."Preston looked at me with a hint of warning in his eyes."Leave now, and I won't pursue this any further."I looked at the license agreement and said, "I didn't sign this."An uproar swept through the audience.Mallory promptly played a recording of my voice."You can take over the operation of the technology. I won't be involved in its management going forward."It certainly sounded l
