Chapter 1

"Teresa, thank you for everything you've done for me."

I handed over my resignation letter. Teresa Walsh read it and looked up in surprise.

"Elena, you're resigning?"

"Yes. I think it's time for a change."

"You've been with Caruso & Associates for eight years. Why leave now?"

"It isn't sudden." I smiled. "Ethan's father is barely in his life. I want to take my son somewhere new and start over."

Teresa hesitated.

"I always thought…"

She stopped there. She probably thought Ethan didn't have a father, and I didn't correct her.

When she realized I had made up my mind, she accepted the resignation.

I left the legal department and stopped by the private lounge for coffee.

That was where I saw Damian and Sofia.

Sofia Bellini sat beside him with one hand around his arm, leaning close enough that something she whispered made him smile.

Damian Caruso was the founder of Caruso & Associates, one of the most successful lawyers in New York, and my husband of eight years.

I had joined his law firm shortly before one night changed everything between us. I became pregnant, and Damian married me because of it, without a wedding or public announcement.

To everyone else, I was Elena Hart, one of the firm's lawyers, and Ethan was only my son.

Sofia was different. She had grown up with Damian, and no one questioned why she belonged beside him.

I walked in.

"Damian."

He looked up, and the smile he had worn for Sofia disappeared.

"Elena. Do you need something?"

His tone was no different from the way he addressed any other employee.

"No. I'm just getting coffee."

I had barely turned away when he stopped me.

"Give the Marina Hotel acquisition to Sofia. She'll handle the closing."

I paused.

I had spent months on that deal.

"Sofia needs a complete project on her record," Damian said.

"And the work I already did?"

His expression cooled.

"Elena, I'm informing you. I'm not asking."

It wasn't the first time he had handed Sofia something I had worked for.

I used to fight him over it.

That day, I felt almost nothing.

Soon, none of it would matter to me.

Sofia accepted the file with a smile.

"Thanks, Elena. You've already handled the hard part."

"I hope the rest goes well."

I took my coffee and left.

When I got home, Ethan was working on the model he had built for school. The moment he saw me, he came over and asked quietly,

"Mom, did you ask Dad?"

The next afternoon was his Family Science Challenge at school, and that evening was his seventh birthday.

For days, he had been asking the same question.

Would Dad come this time?

I brushed a hand over his hair.

"I'll ask him again."

Ethan's face brightened.

"Tell him I really want him there."

"I will."

After he went back to his room, I called Damian. No answer, so I sent him a message.

Ethan's school event is tomorrow afternoon. His birthday dinner is tomorrow night too. Can you come?

Hours passed without a reply.

By bedtime, my phone was still silent. Then Sofia's latest Instagram Story appeared.

They were in a private screening room. Sofia leaned against Damian, while only the side of his face showed in the photo.

Several people we knew had already commented.

You two look perfect together.

How are you still not married?

Someone else asked:

Is this finally the year?

Sofia replied with a smiling emoji.

I closed the app.

Damian wasn't too busy to look at his phone. He simply didn't have time to answer me.

He didn't come home that night either.

Before Ethan went to sleep, he asked again.

"Mom, did Dad text back?"

I tucked the blanket around him and shook my head.

"Not yet."

The hope in his eyes dimmed, but he quickly said,

"Maybe he's busy."

At seven, my son had already learned to make excuses for a father who had never truly been there.

I closed his door and sat alone at the dining table.

For eight years, I had kept telling myself to wait a little longer: until Damian stopped resenting what had happened between us, until he acknowledged our marriage, until Ethan could finally call him Dad without looking around first.

Maybe that day was never coming.

I poured myself a glass of wine. By the time it was empty, there was still no message from Damian.

Looking at the glass, I finally understood how pointless all those years of waiting had been.

Why keep holding on to a man who didn't love me?

I opened the folder my attorney had sent that morning.

Divorce Agreement.

My signature was already on the last page.

Damian, this time, I was setting you free.

"So after eight years, you still think I was a woman who would do anything to marry you."Damian's expression stiffened."Elena, that's not what I meant.""It's exactly what you meant."I looked at him and realized I wasn't even disappointed anymore.I was simply tired of being misunderstood."Damian, did it ever occur to you that eight years ago, I was the one trying to leave?"His brows drew together."What are you talking about?"For a moment, I was back at the Caruso & Associates anniversary gala.Damian had been drinking, but something about him had seemed wrong. He could barely walk, so I helped him back to his hotel room.I got him water, made sure he was in bed, and turned to leave.I had almost reached the door when he grabbed me.That was when I realized he wasn't simply drunk.I suspected someone had put something in his drink.I told him to let me go. I tried to get away, but Damian wasn't in a state to understand what I was saying. What happened afterward had never been so

Damian looked at Sofia standing in his way."I'm not lying to you."His voice was calm and final."I love Elena. I'm going to find her."He pulled his arm free and left the house without looking back.By then, Ethan and I had already settled into life in Seattle. My new job had not officially started yet, so my days were simple. I took Ethan to school in the morning, came home to unpack and organize the house, and occasionally handled a few independent legal consultations. The quiet still felt unfamiliar. No midnight calls from the firm. No contracts waiting on my laptop. No wondering whether Damian would come home or disappear again.Rachel told me from time to time that Damian kept asking where we were.I didn't care.He could look for me if he wanted.I wasn't going back.Eventually, my attorney confirmed that Ethan and I were living in Seattle after Damian requested visitation.A few weeks later, after dropping Ethan off at school, I was watering the flowers in the front yard when

When he finally returned home, he sat alone in the dark living room with the judgment in his hands. The house was completely silent.Dad.He suddenly remembered Ethan using that word when he was younger, and how often Damian had corrected him.Not outside. Not when other people were around.Call me Mr. Caruso. He had always claimed it was better if no one knew he had a wife and son. The truth was that he had never believed the marriage should have existed. Now Ethan had finally done exactly what Damian wanted. And hearing Mr. Caruso had felt unbearable. His eyes dropped to the papers again.I wasn't asking for any of his property or making any extra demands. I wanted only to end the marriage and keep Ethan primarily in my care under the temporary parenting agreement Damian had already signed. My signature was on the final page, dated before I left New York. His grip tightened around the papers. So I hadn't been throwing a tantrum.I hadn't been waiting in another apartment for him to c

After Sofia stormed out of Damian's office, the room stayed quiet.Plenty of people outside had seen what happened, but no one was foolish enough to gossip where Damian might hear.Rachel sent me a message.Everyone's betting on how long he can keep putting up with her.I replied with a smiling emoji and left it there. How capable Sofia was, or how much longer Damian could tolerate her, had nothing to do with me anymore.Damian had criticized me plenty of times too. The difference was that I never cried or walked out when he pointed out a mistake. I wrote everything down, fixed it, and made sure I didn't repeat it.I lost my parents young and got through college and law school on scholarships, loans, and part-time work. When I joined Caruso & Associates, I had no family name or connections.Damian didn't make things easier.I stayed late night after night, reading contracts, case law, and transaction records until I understood every line. Whenever I got stuck, I went to the senior atto

Damian never appeared at our first divorce hearing.Sofia called him again that morning, and he stayed with her instead. The hearing was postponed.I wasn't surprised.Once my resignation and Ethan's relocation paperwork were complete, I officially left Caruso & Associates.I didn't go to see Damian, and I had no intention of saying goodbye. Instead, I had my private attorney send the divorce papers to his house.Damian had already signed the temporary parenting agreement and Ethan's relocation consent. All that remained was ending the marriage itself. If he signed the divorce papers too, the rest of the process could move forward without much trouble.I looked at the delivery confirmation on my phone, then closed the page.Goodbye, Damian. From now on, you could let anyone stand beside you in public without worrying that Ethan or I might reveal what we were to you.The night before our flight, I asked Ethan one last time."Sweetheart, Mom is going to separate from Dad and take you som

"Mr. Caruso, thank you for letting us stay here."Ethan said it again.I looked down at him, and something tightened in my chest. His eyes were already red, but he still held his chin up, refusing to cry.For eight years, Damian had never publicly acknowledged our marriage.I had handled contracts, lawsuits, and high-profile cases for Caruso & Associates, helping him build the firm's reputation piece by piece. Yet in front of everyone else, I was still only one of his lawyers. When Ethan was younger, he didn't understand. He would run toward Damian and call him Dad the moment he saw him.Every time, Damian stopped him."Not here, Ethan."Eventually, Ethan learned. Around other people, he simply stopped calling Damian anything at all.At home, though, he still called him Dad in a small, careful voice.Today, for the first time, he had chosen a name for the distance between them.Mr. Caruso. And Damian looked like he couldn't stand hearing it."Ethan."He stepped closer with a frown."Wh
