Chapter 2

作者: Robin
After I returned to Milan, my secretary brought me a file.

As I went through it page by page, the truth gradually came into view.

The first time I asked to return to Sicily with Matteo, his mother was suddenly hospitalized with a heart attack, so I stayed behind to look after her. According to the file, the entire thing had been staged with the help of her doctors and nurses.

The second time I wanted to go with him, one of the Vitale family’s operations in Milan came under attack, and I remained there to negotiate on the family’s behalf. Only now did I learn that the confrontation had been deliberately provoked by Matteo’s right-hand man, Sal, who had led his men into another family’s territory.

The third time I planned to accompany him, my father was summoned by the prosecutor’s office. I stayed in Milan to find him a lawyer and deal with the investigation, never knowing that he had deliberately drawn the authorities’ attention to himself.

They had gone to extraordinary lengths to keep the truth from me.

I closed the file and told my secretary, “Call them all in.”

When they arrived, I pushed the folder across the table toward them.

“Why did you hide this from me?”

Matteo’s mother set down her teacup without the slightest trace of panic at having been exposed.

“For the Vitale family,” she replied calmly. “If the other Families found out that Matteo had a son hidden away, what do you think they would do?”

I stared at her.

“So you kept this from me for six years.”

“We were doing what was best for you, too. Knowing too much would only have interfered with your ability to manage the family.”

She met my gaze without flinching.

“Besides, stopping you those three times was Matteo’s decision. He told us to keep you from going until the time was right, and then he would explain everything himself.”

Six years of deception and three carefully arranged obstacles were reduced, in their telling, to nothing more than choosing a better time for me to learn the truth.

Not one of them had ever thought to ask whether I wanted that choice made for me.

So Matteo had been behind all of it from the beginning.

His mother sighed.

“I never told him that losing the baby left you unable to have another child. If you adopt his son, you’ll have an heir. You know perfectly well that the family recognizes only you as their Donna.”

That was all they needed from me: a Donna capable of holding everything together.

“All right,” I said. “I’ll think about it.”

Two days later, Matteo returned to Milan with Chiara and Stefano.

I was standing outside the villa when they arrived. Matteo’s mother had come down before me and was already waiting beneath the portico.

The moment the car stopped, she hurried forward and lifted Stefano out, fussing over him affectionately. “There’s my good boy. Let Grandma have a look at you.”

Matteo stepped out from the other side of the car and came straight toward me.

He opened his arms, pulled me against his chest, and rested his chin on top of my head.

“Vera, once everything with the boy is settled, I’ll take you to Norway. We haven’t been away together in so long. You’ve always wanted to see the fjords, haven’t you?”

“Okay,” I answered calmly.

He held me for a while before his mother called from the portico, “Matteo, Stefano wants you.”

The boy stood beside Chiara, clutching the fabric of her dress as he watched us from a distance.

Matteo glanced at me.

“I’ll go see him.”

He walked over and lifted Stefano into his arms, while Chiara stood beside him holding his suit jacket.

The three of them looked like a family, while I felt like a stranger who had walked into the wrong house.

I turned away, went back to the study, and began drafting the divorce papers.

My secretary stood beside me, her expression uneasy.

“Are you really drawing up divorce papers?”

She hesitated before adding, “But… will the Boss actually sign them?”

I looked down at the Donna’s ring in my hand.

“He trusts me. All these years, he’s never bothered to read the documents I put in front of him to sign. He won’t read them this time either.”

If my husband had already given his home to someone else, there was no reason for me to stay.

This time, I would use the very trust he placed in me to make him sign away our marriage with his own hand.

After saying what I needed to say, I turned and went inside to check on the children, and by the time I returned to the courtyard, Matteo was already gone. From that day onward, the shelter began receiving anonymous donations, including several large boxes of Sicilian oranges every month, each accompanied by a printed note that read, “For the children.”Since the children needed these supplies, I saw no reason to send them back.As my involvement in the project deepened, however, I began spending less time at the shelter and devoted myself to work that could make a broader difference, mapping the local Mafia’s transport routes and developing security plans for rescue operations.Years spent inside the Family had taught me how the Mafia operated, allowing me to anticipate their movements and understand the logic behind their decisions, but the work also put me in danger by threatening the interests of powerful people, just as Matteo had warned me it would. My cover was blown several tim

The children huddled behind me, clinging to my legs as they watched the man standing at the gate with frightened, uncertain eyes.I gently told them to go inside, and Arta was the last to release her grip on me before scurrying into the house and closing the door behind her, leaving Matteo and me alone in the courtyard. His hands were wrapped in thick bandages, his eyes bloodshot, and his entire frame had grown noticeably thinner, but I wasn't surprised that he had managed to find me. I had never deliberately concealed my whereabouts; I had divorced him and left the Vitale family, not vanished off the face of the earth, and Tirana was a small enough city that anyone determined to find me would eventually succeed.Matteo approached me one slow step at a time before dropping to his knees in front of me.“Vera, I'm sorry. I was wrong,” he said, looking at me with desperate, pleading eyes as he begged me to forgive him and give him another chance. He wanted me to understand that he wasn't

When Chiara learned that Matteo was going to Albania to find me, she brought Stefano to intercept him before he could leave.“You haven’t come to see Stefano and me in days,” she said, her eyes reddening with tears.Stefano tugged at Matteo’s sleeve and looked up at him through his tears. “Papà, don’t you want me anymore?”The scene was painfully familiar, just like that day at the old estate in Sicily when Stefano’s tears had stopped Matteo from following me.Chiara looked at Matteo with tear-filled eyes and accused me of forcing him to choose between her and her son on one side and me on the other by leaving just as they had become part of the Family.Matteo frowned slightly. “She’s the Donna of the Vitale family. Who gave you the right to call her by her first name?”He then made it clear that I wasn’t forcing him to choose anything; going to find me was entirely his own decision.Chiara broke down in tears. “Then are you abandoning Stefano and me? We’ve only just arrived in Milan,

Matteo had sent everyone he could spare to search for me when Sal, his right-hand man, stormed into the study and urged him to think clearly. “Boss, you need to calm down. The Family still has business to take care of, and you can’t afford to forget that.”Matteo’s expression remained unreadable as he replied, “Sal, she matters more to me than anything else.”Sal fell silent, but eventually accepted that there was no changing Matteo’s mind and went to carry out his orders. After Sal left, my father, Tommaso Moretti, was the next to enter the study. Matteo turned his dark, heavy gaze on him and said, “If you’re here to talk me out of this too, you can get out.”He would never have spoken to my father that way while I was still there, but now that I was gone, even that restraint no longer seemed to matter. My father shook his head and took a document from inside his jacket. “I only came to tell you that she left a set of papers with me as well.”The documents made it clear that I had sep

Matteo stared at the divorce papers as though refusing to believe that I had truly left him.He summoned the household staff and demanded coldly, “Where did the Donna go?”The servants stood before him in frightened silence, none of them daring to lift their heads.“We don’t know, sir. Not long after the dinner began, the Donna left through the side entrance, and she never came back.”Matteo’s breath caught. The glimpse he had gotten of me during the dinner had been the last time he saw me before I left.I had looked so lonely that night, and he had noticed it. He had wanted to follow me, take my hand, and pull me into his arms, yet in the end, he had stayed where he was.The weight in his chest grew heavier with every heartbeat until he could barely breathe, and he rushed into the master bedroom, searching desperately for any sign that I might still come back. The couture coats, designer handbags, and jewelry he had bought me over the years were all still there. The only things I had

Preparations were underway for Chiara and Stefano’s welcome dinner.I spent most of the day in the study finalizing the menu, arranging the seating plan, and confirming the guest list, with documents spread across the desk in front of me.Matteo came in carrying a small plate. On it were two slices of toast, lightly charred at the edges and covered with a thick layer of Sicilian orange marmalade. There had been a time when that was the only thing I could eat whenever the pressure became too much.Back when we had first moved to Milan, we worked from morning until well past midnight almost every day. Whenever I lost my appetite, Matteo would make this for me, bring it to my desk, and feed me.Once we had established ourselves in Milan, he never made it again. He set the plate down in front of me.“You haven’t had dinner.”I looked at the toast but made no move to touch it.“Vera.” Matteo sat across from me, his voice low and gentle. “I haven’t forgotten everything you’ve carried for me
