Chapter 3

作者: Robin
Matteo was eager for me to adopt Chiara’s son, so the very next day he had his right-hand man, Sal, prepare the adoption papers.

He seemed to believe that once I had an heir, I would settle back into my place in the family and carry on as I always had.

Apparently, this was the explanation he thought he owed me.

Sal placed the papers in front of me. “Once you sign, Stefano will legally become your son.”

I stared at the document without reaching for the pen.

Without warning, Chiara dropped to her knees in tears.

“Donna, I’ll give up my son’s claim to the inheritance. Please adopt him. All I ask is that you let me stay by Matteo’s side.”

The boy immediately began to cry and threw his arms around her neck. “Mamma, please don’t leave me.”

Matteo crouched beside them and gathered mother and son into his arms.

“She’s not leaving you. Papà is here, and no one is going to separate you from your mother.”

A crushing sense of helplessness rose inside me. They were both children, yet mine had been taken from me before he had even been given the chance to see the world.

That was when I noticed the silver pendant around Stefano’s neck.

I had chosen that necklace myself while I was pregnant, and the name of my dead child was engraved on the back.

After I lost him, I had ordered everything locked away in the nursery at the end of the hall, and the necklace had never been taken out again.

“Where did you get that necklace?”

Something in my expression frightened Stefano. He edged behind Matteo and timidly pointed toward the stairs.

I rushed upstairs and ran down the corridor to the room at the very end, but when I pushed open the door, everything inside had changed.

Not a single thing belonging to my child remained.

Matteo arrived moments later with Stefano in his arms. His expression shifted the instant he saw the room, and when he turned the pendant over and read the engraving on the back, all the color drained from his face.

S.V.—Stefano Vitale.

“Vera, I never meant to have them change this room—”

“I know.”

He hadn’t done it deliberately. He had simply forgotten who the room had once been prepared for and whose name had originally been engraved on that pendant.

Somewhere along the way, he had even forgotten that he had once had another child.

Matteo immediately bent down and removed the necklace from Stefano’s neck.

The boy thought he had done something wrong, and tears spilled down his cheeks.

“Papà, I’m sorry.”

Matteo instinctively pulled him close. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

He wiped away Stefano’s tears with practiced tenderness.

There had been countless nights when I had wondered what Matteo would look like holding our child in his arms, and now I finally knew.

The child he was holding simply wasn’t mine.

“Forget the adoption.”

I picked up the papers and tore them in half in front of everyone.

Matteo’s mother was the first to speak. “Vera, what is that supposed to mean?”

Beside her, my father lowered his voice in reproach. “Do you have to humiliate me along with everyone else?”

“Stefano already has a mother,” I replied coldly. “She’s alive. Being his mother is not my responsibility.”

With that, I left the room.

Matteo followed and caught my wrist at the end of the corridor.

“Vera, I know I haven’t treated you the way you deserved all these years.”

I said nothing.

A moment later, Chiara came out with Stefano and stopped at the other end of the hallway, quietly crying.

“This is all my fault. I should never have fallen in love with a man who belonged to someone else.”

Matteo turned to look at them.

He stood in the middle of the corridor with me on one side and Chiara and Stefano on the other, and when his eyes returned to mine, the light in them had dimmed.

“If you don’t want to adopt Stefano, I won’t force you. But what happened to our child is in the past, Vera. At some point, we have to move forward.”

His gaze drifted briefly toward Chiara and the boy.

“They haven’t had an easy life these past six years either.”

There was a weary plea in his voice, the sort of patience one might use to coax an unreasonable wife into seeing sense.

Whatever warmth was left in me slowly faded.

“I understand,” I said with a numb nod.

Matteo looked startled, and an inexplicable unease seemed to settle over him, but I gave him no time to question it.

“We can put the adoption aside for now. Stefano is still young, and there’s no need to force this on him.”

I paused before adding, “Chiara should be formally acknowledged as well. Three days from now, I’ll hold a reception for her and introduce her to the family properly.”

I sounded completely sincere.

At last, Matteo relaxed and reached for my hand.

“Vera, thank you.”

I pulled my hand away.

“There’s no need.”

Without looking at him again, I went downstairs to collect a package that had just arrived.

Inside were the finalized divorce papers from my lawyer.

In three days, I would place them in front of Matteo and let him sign his name.

After saying what I needed to say, I turned and went inside to check on the children, and by the time I returned to the courtyard, Matteo was already gone. From that day onward, the shelter began receiving anonymous donations, including several large boxes of Sicilian oranges every month, each accompanied by a printed note that read, “For the children.”Since the children needed these supplies, I saw no reason to send them back.As my involvement in the project deepened, however, I began spending less time at the shelter and devoted myself to work that could make a broader difference, mapping the local Mafia’s transport routes and developing security plans for rescue operations.Years spent inside the Family had taught me how the Mafia operated, allowing me to anticipate their movements and understand the logic behind their decisions, but the work also put me in danger by threatening the interests of powerful people, just as Matteo had warned me it would. My cover was blown several tim

The children huddled behind me, clinging to my legs as they watched the man standing at the gate with frightened, uncertain eyes.I gently told them to go inside, and Arta was the last to release her grip on me before scurrying into the house and closing the door behind her, leaving Matteo and me alone in the courtyard. His hands were wrapped in thick bandages, his eyes bloodshot, and his entire frame had grown noticeably thinner, but I wasn't surprised that he had managed to find me. I had never deliberately concealed my whereabouts; I had divorced him and left the Vitale family, not vanished off the face of the earth, and Tirana was a small enough city that anyone determined to find me would eventually succeed.Matteo approached me one slow step at a time before dropping to his knees in front of me.“Vera, I'm sorry. I was wrong,” he said, looking at me with desperate, pleading eyes as he begged me to forgive him and give him another chance. He wanted me to understand that he wasn't

When Chiara learned that Matteo was going to Albania to find me, she brought Stefano to intercept him before he could leave.“You haven’t come to see Stefano and me in days,” she said, her eyes reddening with tears.Stefano tugged at Matteo’s sleeve and looked up at him through his tears. “Papà, don’t you want me anymore?”The scene was painfully familiar, just like that day at the old estate in Sicily when Stefano’s tears had stopped Matteo from following me.Chiara looked at Matteo with tear-filled eyes and accused me of forcing him to choose between her and her son on one side and me on the other by leaving just as they had become part of the Family.Matteo frowned slightly. “She’s the Donna of the Vitale family. Who gave you the right to call her by her first name?”He then made it clear that I wasn’t forcing him to choose anything; going to find me was entirely his own decision.Chiara broke down in tears. “Then are you abandoning Stefano and me? We’ve only just arrived in Milan,

Matteo had sent everyone he could spare to search for me when Sal, his right-hand man, stormed into the study and urged him to think clearly. “Boss, you need to calm down. The Family still has business to take care of, and you can’t afford to forget that.”Matteo’s expression remained unreadable as he replied, “Sal, she matters more to me than anything else.”Sal fell silent, but eventually accepted that there was no changing Matteo’s mind and went to carry out his orders. After Sal left, my father, Tommaso Moretti, was the next to enter the study. Matteo turned his dark, heavy gaze on him and said, “If you’re here to talk me out of this too, you can get out.”He would never have spoken to my father that way while I was still there, but now that I was gone, even that restraint no longer seemed to matter. My father shook his head and took a document from inside his jacket. “I only came to tell you that she left a set of papers with me as well.”The documents made it clear that I had sep

Matteo stared at the divorce papers as though refusing to believe that I had truly left him.He summoned the household staff and demanded coldly, “Where did the Donna go?”The servants stood before him in frightened silence, none of them daring to lift their heads.“We don’t know, sir. Not long after the dinner began, the Donna left through the side entrance, and she never came back.”Matteo’s breath caught. The glimpse he had gotten of me during the dinner had been the last time he saw me before I left.I had looked so lonely that night, and he had noticed it. He had wanted to follow me, take my hand, and pull me into his arms, yet in the end, he had stayed where he was.The weight in his chest grew heavier with every heartbeat until he could barely breathe, and he rushed into the master bedroom, searching desperately for any sign that I might still come back. The couture coats, designer handbags, and jewelry he had bought me over the years were all still there. The only things I had

Preparations were underway for Chiara and Stefano’s welcome dinner.I spent most of the day in the study finalizing the menu, arranging the seating plan, and confirming the guest list, with documents spread across the desk in front of me.Matteo came in carrying a small plate. On it were two slices of toast, lightly charred at the edges and covered with a thick layer of Sicilian orange marmalade. There had been a time when that was the only thing I could eat whenever the pressure became too much.Back when we had first moved to Milan, we worked from morning until well past midnight almost every day. Whenever I lost my appetite, Matteo would make this for me, bring it to my desk, and feed me.Once we had established ourselves in Milan, he never made it again. He set the plate down in front of me.“You haven’t had dinner.”I looked at the toast but made no move to touch it.“Vera.” Matteo sat across from me, his voice low and gentle. “I haven’t forgotten everything you’ve carried for me
