Chapter 3

Author: Fruity Heaven
I stood on the street as the car quickly vanished from sight, not knowing where to go. I had finally sobered up after everything that had happened, which only made the pain even sharper.

I looked around the city, and even at 2:00 am, the streets remained noisy and crowded. There were people and cars that came and went, while the neon lights shone brighter than the night sky. The noisier everything around me got, the quieter my own world grew.

I had been here for seven years, and I had never grown accustomed to life in this city. I had only forced myself to put up with it because I was by Cassian's side for so long.

I couldn't help but find love to be a terrible thing.

It could make people willingly suffer, give up who they were, and lose themselves completely. It could numb them, even make them blind and deaf to the truth, until they could no longer tell whether the person beside them every day was human or a monster.

I made my way home one step at a time. It took two hours, crossing eight main roads and three major intersections. I had taken Cassian down this route a hundred times before, showing him every sign and building just in case he lost his memory and couldn't find his way home.

Cassian used to ride his bike ahead of me, brushing off my constant nagging. "It's not like I'm stupid. Why wouldn't I know the route?"

I picked up my pace to catch up with him. "It could happen, you know. I mean, even I lose my way once in a while."

Cassian teased me. "You're terrible with directions. You've been living here for years, and you still manage to get lost going to the local supermarket, Maeve."

I really was terrible with directions, but after walking every inch of this route home, I'd memorized it. It was the only road I knew by heart, one I could follow home with my eyes closed.

Cassian had always taken the wrong turn, though. He'd either head east and end up at Nadine's apartment, or head west and go to her company. He had been right all along. He was no fool—he knew the directions just fine. He simply didn't want to return home.

I mused that if that was the case, then I might as well keep my distance. I stopped and took out my phone—watching the screen light up and go dark again—before I finally made up my mind and booked a flight for the following evening. I then hailed a cab to go home.

Cassian was still awake, even though it was already this late. He stood on the balcony, on a video call with Nadine. They talked about everything imaginable, from their plans for tomorrow to the trips they wanted to take next year.

Nadine said, "You should just fake amnesia at tomorrow's party so that Maeve won't bother you again. We can make an excuse to leave early and go set off fireworks by the river together, Cassian."

Cassian smiled in agreement.

Nadine continued, "You and I should go away for a long trip over the holiday this year! I really want to spend the next few months traveling!"

Cassian hesitated for a moment. "I don't think that'll work. Maeve's birthday and our wedding anniversary both fall around then, so I need to spend those days with her. In addition, if I keep up the amnesia act for too long, she'll get suspicious, Nadine."

Nadine whined. "Oh, come on! I really want to go, so please just come with me, Cassian!"

Cassian couldn't resist her constant whining. "Just this once, then."

I opened the balcony door. He immediately hid his phone behind his back and eyed me warily. I acted as if I hadn't noticed and started taking my clothes off the drying rack. I then asked casually, "Haven't you gone to bed yet?"

Cassian was likely acting out of guilt. He blinked in mock confusion, slipped back into his "amnesia" state, and took a step back, asking, "Who are you?"

I replied, "I'm the live-in housekeeper. I handle the cleaning and tidying here."

I carried the pile of clothes into the living room and began packing my suitcase right in front of Cassian.

Cassian didn't say much. He gave me a serious warning just before he went into the bedroom, saying, "I'm a light sleeper, so don't knock on my door unless it's necessary."

"I won't disturb you," I said, nodding my head. I would never interfere with his life again from that moment onward.

I had no idea how Cassian had found my place, but he had begun appearing in my life regularly.I would find a fresh bouquet at the door every time I pushed open the front gate; one day it'd be roses, the next day dew-kissed lisianthus. They were wrapped with care, with no signature or note included, just bound by a black ribbon. That was a habit Cassian had kept since we started dating. I didn't even look at them before dumping them right into the trash.Cassian appeared on the street outside my house every night. He knew I couldn't stand him, so he kept his distance, sitting in a café and watching me from afar. He never left, no matter the weather. It actually rained one day. I forgot my umbrella and took shelter outside a convenience store. He braved the rain to buy an umbrella, ran over to set it down beside me, and then walked off into the downpour without a word.I couldn't understand why Cassian was doing all this. Did he just put on another performance, continuing to act l

Cassian had changed so much in the three years since we'd last met. He had once been refined and sharp, but now he looked utterly disheveled. His hair fell messily over his forehead, faint dark circles showed beneath his eyes, and his gaze held a deep, lingering exhaustion. He was sitting right in the middle of a pile of empty bottles, staring at me without blinking.I never thought our reunion would look like this.Cassian instinctively recoiled, trying to hide his sorry state, but there was nowhere to go in the open space around him. He slowly stood up and stammered, "M-Maeve?"He walked unsteadily, probably from drinking too much, his body swaying a little. "I-Is it really you, Maeve?"He looked on with delight the moment he realized that I wasn't a figment of his imagination. He stumbled toward me, trying to run, but fell into the sand with a thud. His clothes were wet from the seawater, and he looked more wretched than ever. He pushed himself up again. "P-Please don't go, M-M

I decided to make Halport my home. I began looking for houses the moment the idea took root, eventually buying a cottage with a garden near the beach on the edge of town. I never feared Cassian coming after me.I knew that our hearts were already miles apart, and being near each other physically wouldn't change that or take us back to how we were.I kept my phone number and couldn't be bothered to block Cassian. I was right here. If he wanted to look for me, he could do so at any time. Those in love would find their way back to each other even from opposite ends of the earth, but those who didn't love each other would keep missing each other, even in a place as small as Halport. Thus, spring passed into autumn, winter gave way to summer, and the tulips in my garden bloomed over and over again.I gradually stepped out from under the shadow of my marriage over the years, and my memories of Cassian gradually faded away.Cassian had been looking for me the whole time. Yvonne told me

Over the phone, Cassian asked, "Where are you?"I went silent for a beat, then asked, "How did you manage to get my new number, Cassian?"Cassian chuckled before saying, "I can track it down as long as I set my mind to it."I was momentarily stunned.Cassian took a deep breath and continued, "Have you had enough? Your whole 'running away from home' game is seriously getting old now."He spoke with that same patronizing attitude. "I'll tell you right now—this trick doesn't work on me. You can't even find your way around. Where could you possibly go by yourself? It's a miracle you haven't gotten yourself into trouble. Where are you right now, Maeve?"I hated the way he talked down to me. I said coldly, "It's none of your business."Cassian cut me off. "How is it none of my business? You're my wife! I have every right to know where you are, Maeve!""I'm in Halport," I said. Cassian would never actually come out here to find me even if he knew. He was just waiting for me to go ba

I was squatting in the yard, scattering flower seeds, when my phone lit up beside me. It was a group of messages from Yvonne."Where on earth are you? Cassian and Nadine are acting even more shamelessly now that you're not around."I saw Cassian heading to a hotel with Nadine last night."It seems like they're planning to go on a trip to the beach."You should hurry up and deal with this, Maeve. Otherwise, they're actually going to end up in bed together!"Everyone knew there was something between Cassian and Nadine, even if no one said it outright. They had grown up together in the same neighborhood, shared meals from the same bowl, and even slept in the same bed as children. Their friends had all expected Cassian to marry Nadine. No one had expected him to marry me and bring me into the Allen family—and no one was willing to accept it, either. These past few years, except for Yvonne, everyone had believed Cassian should love Nadine more than me, the woman who had appeared out

  • He Only Remembered Me When I Was Gone   Chapter 5

I leaned against the window and watched the city beneath me shrink as the plane rose above the clouds. It then shrank into a barely visible speck of light and completely disappeared from view.I couldn't stop my thoughts from wandering to those seven years of marriage—more than 2,000 days and nights. I had lived with the lie Cassian had made up, choosing to trust him time and time again, only to be hurt again and again.I used to convince myself that he couldn't help it because he was sick. He had memory loss, so it wasn't a matter of him not loving me—he simply couldn't hold onto me. That was why I tolerated his coldness time and again. I repeatedly walked him through directions, taught him my name, and went over our history. I stuck notes all over the house and tried every method I could think of to help his memory, doing everything I could to be the one constant in his confused world.I had clearly thought too highly of my standing with Cassian. It turned out I was never ahead
