Chapter 4

Author: Fruity Heaven
I woke up the following morning and found that Cassian was already gone. I packed my bags, had someone send them to the airport ahead of me, and then checked the house to make sure I hadn't left anything behind.

I noticed that there were bright sticky notes covering the whole house, making it almost jarring to look at. I had written each and every one of them myself.

"I'm Maeve Stewart. I'm married to you, Cassian.

"We met on a trip and fell in love at first sight. You were the one who told me you loved me first.

"We've been to 15 countries, and we're working toward our goal of traveling around the world.

"I love you so much, so please don't hurt me or forget about me, Cassian."

I had placed every note somewhere conspicuous. I'd spent years doing everything I could while Cassian pretended to have amnesia, yet he'd never noticed. I took down the notes one by one, tore them into pieces, and threw them away.

…

After taking care of everything, I went to the restaurant for Yvonne Zeller's birthday party. After all, I wanted to say goodbye to my only true friend before leaving.

Yvonne grabbed my arm and said, "Come in! Cassian arrived a long time ago! Why didn't you come together, Maeve?"

I merely shook my head in response.

"I've arranged a seat for you at the table inside, right beside Cassian," Yvonne said before hurrying off to welcome other guests.

I noticed that all the seats were taken by the time I made my way over. Nadine was sitting next to Cassian, while my name tag sat on the floor by the foot of her chair. Almost everyone else at the table was a good friend of Cassian's.

I walked up to Nadine and said, "You're in my seat."

Nadine acted as if she hadn't heard me and tugged Cassian's sleeve, asking him to peel her shrimp for her.

It was then that someone nearby said mockingly, "You've probably made a mistake, miss! Cassian doesn't even seem to know who you are, after all. Isn't it a bit inappropriate to insist on sitting beside him?"

Those around the table watched with interest, waiting to see what would happen. Their commotion soon attracted the attention of those nearby, and murmurs spread through the crowd.

I stood alone in the middle of it all, looking rather awkward.

Nadine turned to Cassian and asked, "Do you know her, Cassian?"

Cassian glanced at me. He pursed his lips and seemed on the verge of speaking, but he ended up shaking his head instead.

Everyone at the table broke into laughter.

"You'd better leave now, miss! You're not welcome here!"

"It's so hilarious! She's throwing herself at him, and he couldn't care less!"

I suspected that Cassian's friends knew he was faking his amnesia. They had all kept it a secret from me and treated my suffering as a joke. They treated me the way Cassian did—the less he cared, the bolder they became.

In the past, they used to make me cry all the time, but now, I felt no emotional reaction at all.

I turned away and looked for a free spot in the restaurant. Cassian kept his eyes on me the whole way. He had seen how awkward things were for me, but he still said nothing. I eventually found a seat in the corner and took a seat.

I could hear the laughter from Cassian's table even half a restaurant away. Nadine had too much to drink and was nestled in his arms, pouting and acting like a spoiled child. Cassian, on the other hand, had completely put me out of his mind.

It seemed I was the only one who had been deeply affected by those seven years, while to him, they meant nothing at all.

Yvonne rushed over after seeing me get up and asked, "Where are you off to, Maeve? Cassian hasn't left yet. He's suffering from intermittent amnesia at the moment. Aren't you going to take him back first?"

I gently pushed Yvonne's hand away and said, "Cassian will know how to find his way back once I'm gone. I'll see you again if we get the chance. I'll be leaving Brightwell now, Yvonne…"

In the end, as the plane took off and left the city behind, all I had left was a signed divorce agreement. I was finally bidding farewell to my past once and for all.

I had no idea how Cassian had found my place, but he had begun appearing in my life regularly.I would find a fresh bouquet at the door every time I pushed open the front gate; one day it'd be roses, the next day dew-kissed lisianthus. They were wrapped with care, with no signature or note included, just bound by a black ribbon. That was a habit Cassian had kept since we started dating. I didn't even look at them before dumping them right into the trash.Cassian appeared on the street outside my house every night. He knew I couldn't stand him, so he kept his distance, sitting in a café and watching me from afar. He never left, no matter the weather. It actually rained one day. I forgot my umbrella and took shelter outside a convenience store. He braved the rain to buy an umbrella, ran over to set it down beside me, and then walked off into the downpour without a word.I couldn't understand why Cassian was doing all this. Did he just put on another performance, continuing to act l

Cassian had changed so much in the three years since we'd last met. He had once been refined and sharp, but now he looked utterly disheveled. His hair fell messily over his forehead, faint dark circles showed beneath his eyes, and his gaze held a deep, lingering exhaustion. He was sitting right in the middle of a pile of empty bottles, staring at me without blinking.I never thought our reunion would look like this.Cassian instinctively recoiled, trying to hide his sorry state, but there was nowhere to go in the open space around him. He slowly stood up and stammered, "M-Maeve?"He walked unsteadily, probably from drinking too much, his body swaying a little. "I-Is it really you, Maeve?"He looked on with delight the moment he realized that I wasn't a figment of his imagination. He stumbled toward me, trying to run, but fell into the sand with a thud. His clothes were wet from the seawater, and he looked more wretched than ever. He pushed himself up again. "P-Please don't go, M-M

I decided to make Halport my home. I began looking for houses the moment the idea took root, eventually buying a cottage with a garden near the beach on the edge of town. I never feared Cassian coming after me.I knew that our hearts were already miles apart, and being near each other physically wouldn't change that or take us back to how we were.I kept my phone number and couldn't be bothered to block Cassian. I was right here. If he wanted to look for me, he could do so at any time. Those in love would find their way back to each other even from opposite ends of the earth, but those who didn't love each other would keep missing each other, even in a place as small as Halport. Thus, spring passed into autumn, winter gave way to summer, and the tulips in my garden bloomed over and over again.I gradually stepped out from under the shadow of my marriage over the years, and my memories of Cassian gradually faded away.Cassian had been looking for me the whole time. Yvonne told me

Over the phone, Cassian asked, "Where are you?"I went silent for a beat, then asked, "How did you manage to get my new number, Cassian?"Cassian chuckled before saying, "I can track it down as long as I set my mind to it."I was momentarily stunned.Cassian took a deep breath and continued, "Have you had enough? Your whole 'running away from home' game is seriously getting old now."He spoke with that same patronizing attitude. "I'll tell you right now—this trick doesn't work on me. You can't even find your way around. Where could you possibly go by yourself? It's a miracle you haven't gotten yourself into trouble. Where are you right now, Maeve?"I hated the way he talked down to me. I said coldly, "It's none of your business."Cassian cut me off. "How is it none of my business? You're my wife! I have every right to know where you are, Maeve!""I'm in Halport," I said. Cassian would never actually come out here to find me even if he knew. He was just waiting for me to go ba

I was squatting in the yard, scattering flower seeds, when my phone lit up beside me. It was a group of messages from Yvonne."Where on earth are you? Cassian and Nadine are acting even more shamelessly now that you're not around."I saw Cassian heading to a hotel with Nadine last night."It seems like they're planning to go on a trip to the beach."You should hurry up and deal with this, Maeve. Otherwise, they're actually going to end up in bed together!"Everyone knew there was something between Cassian and Nadine, even if no one said it outright. They had grown up together in the same neighborhood, shared meals from the same bowl, and even slept in the same bed as children. Their friends had all expected Cassian to marry Nadine. No one had expected him to marry me and bring me into the Allen family—and no one was willing to accept it, either. These past few years, except for Yvonne, everyone had believed Cassian should love Nadine more than me, the woman who had appeared out

  • He Only Remembered Me When I Was Gone   Chapter 5

I leaned against the window and watched the city beneath me shrink as the plane rose above the clouds. It then shrank into a barely visible speck of light and completely disappeared from view.I couldn't stop my thoughts from wandering to those seven years of marriage—more than 2,000 days and nights. I had lived with the lie Cassian had made up, choosing to trust him time and time again, only to be hurt again and again.I used to convince myself that he couldn't help it because he was sick. He had memory loss, so it wasn't a matter of him not loving me—he simply couldn't hold onto me. That was why I tolerated his coldness time and again. I repeatedly walked him through directions, taught him my name, and went over our history. I stuck notes all over the house and tried every method I could think of to help his memory, doing everything I could to be the one constant in his confused world.I had clearly thought too highly of my standing with Cassian. It turned out I was never ahead
