Chapter 1

In the car, my father slid a document onto my lap.

"Sign it, and Rockwell Ranch is yours. Leo's name will come off the joint bid, too."

I picked up the fountain pen and signed my real name.

I handed the document back to him and stared out the window.

My phone buzzed in my bag. Leo's name lit up the screen.

I answered, and his impatient voice came through.

"Elena, we're done. Come pack up your cheap clothes!

"Chloe's moving in tomorrow. She's the governor's only daughter, and Rockwell Ranch is her dowry. Once I marry her, the ranch is mine.

"Call me heartless if you want, but a penniless orphan like you is no use to me. We're through, Elena. Don't even think about coming back."

I said nothing. I ended the call, rolled down the window, and threw the old phone at the highway guardrail.

It bounced onto the road, where a passing car crushed it.

My father tapped his cane on the carpet beside me. "Do you need me to step in?"

I leaned back in my seat and shook my head.

"No, Father. Let him keep dreaming of marrying the governor's daughter.

"Let him think he has everything. Then I'll make him watch it all disappear. That's only fair."

I looked out the window and thought back to why I'd left home. I'd been sick of my father controlling my life, and I'd wanted to see what I could make of myself without the governor's name behind me.

I worked odd jobs until I met Leo, who was just starting his business. We clicked right away, and I joined his tiny studio.

At first, it was just the two of us. We stayed up late finishing proposals and went out together to pitch our products. Once, a client we were pitching to harassed me. Leo put himself between us and beat the guy up, deal or no deal, and came away black and blue himself.

It was the first time anyone had stood up for me without hesitation, without knowing who I was.

Later, the studio went six months without a cent coming in. We lived on water and crackers. When we landed our first deal, we held each other and cried.

From then on, we grew closer. We were partners in the business and lovers who supported each other.

He promised me a better life. But the better the studio did, the busier he got, and the less patience he had for me.

I told myself work was getting to him. Now I had to admit the truth: the Leo who used to fight for me was gone...

Meanwhile, at a luxury apartment downtown, Chloe crushed a framed photo of my family under her heel.

"The whole place smells like that broke orphan. It's disgusting. Get the cleaners in here and disinfect everything!"

Leo came over, took a diamond necklace from its box, and fastened it around her neck.

"Don't worry, baby. I told her to come get her things. You'll never have to see her again."

Only then was Chloe satisfied.

At the same time, the sedan pulled into the estate. The butler met me at the door and draped a cashmere coat over my shoulders.

"Welcome home, Ms. Rockwell."

I nodded and looked at the estate where I'd grown up, torn between feelings I couldn't name.

After all that, I'd ended up right back where I started. I'd set out to make it on my own, and I'd failed miserably.

Leo's words at the party still stung. I'd never imagined that all our years together would lose out to money in the end and turn into a joke.

I took the last photo of Leo and me out of my clutch, the one taken in our rental apartment, and threw it into the fire.

The photo curled and blackened. Soon, it was ash, and the past went with it...

Two months later, at Rockwell Ranch. The ranch stretched to the horizon. Green grass rippled in the wind, and the air smelled of grass and wildflowers. It was the first celebration since the Rockwell family had regained control of the land.In white riding clothes and black boots, I swung onto a black thoroughbred. The fracture in my shin had healed. I sat tall in the saddle and gathered the reins. My father stood outside the fence in a denim jacket, smiling and applauding. The ranch hands and partners raised their glasses. Cheers and whistles carried across the open sky.Three years of darkness had lifted. I was back where I belonged.Meanwhile, 500 miles away, at a maximum-security federal prison in Texas.Leo knelt on the concrete floor of a dark, damp cell.He hadn't had surgery on his right arm soon enough. It hung twisted, withered, and useless against his chest.Several heavily tattooed inmates stood behind him, kicking him in the lower back."Listen up, con man. You're new here

Travis County Jail. The high-security visitation room. The air smelled of disinfectant and mold.Beyond the thick bulletproof glass, Leo sat in a prison uniform, his head shaved. His broken right arm hung against his chest, wrapped in only a few layers of bandage. The visiting room door opened. When Leo saw me sitting across from him, a feverish light flared in his eyes.He seized the phone with his left hand and pressed close to the glass, spitting as he spoke."Elena! You finally came to see me! I knew you still had feelings for me!"He growled through the glass, his words tumbling over one another."Tell the judge you forgive me. Ask the prosecutor to drop the charges. I'll do anything you want when I get out!"I'll do whatever you say. I'll be the most obedient dog at your feet, okay? Please, just get me out of here!"I sat in a swivel chair, dressed in a black skirt suit, and calmly watched him come apart.I left the receiver where it was and tapped the glass.Michael, standing be

Early the next morning, under an Austin overpass. The place reeked.Leo woke shivering, his broken arm burning with pain. The night before, patrol officers had chased him down the hill like a vagrant. He'd ended up crawling under the overpass to sleep. He pushed himself up with his good hand and looked toward the window of an abandoned newsstand.A huge photo filled the front page of the morning paper. It showed Leo groveling outside the governor's estate, sobbing in the mud.In giant bold type, the headline read, "Fake Heiress and the Spineless Wonder: A Bankrupt Con Man's Ultimate Clown Show."Leo's head spun. The last of his pride crumbled."Look! Isn't that the clown from the paper?"A few homeless men passing by pointed at Leo under the overpass and laughed.A drunk tossed his half-eaten burger at Leo's head."Just my luck! The bastard who tried to con the governor's daughter is stealing our sleeping spot!"Mayonnaise ran through Leo's hair and into his eyes. He was too weak to fi

Wind and rain battered the empty road up the hill.Leo's white suit hung in muddy rags. His right arm dangled at his side, dislocated when he'd fallen on the way.At last, he reached the estate gates. The 16-foot black iron gates were shut tight. Leo sank down in front of them and gripped the icy bars with his left hand."Elena! Elena! I was wrong! Come out and see me!"Leo wailed hoarsely in the pouring rain."Remember sharing one bowl of macaroni in that basement? You said you'd stay with me whether we were rich or poor!"Please forgive me! That fake heiress seduced me. Greed blinded me!"We built that company together. Can you really destroy everything we worked for?"He kept shouting as he slammed his forehead against the iron gate.Dull thuds echoed as he struck it again and again. Blood ran from his hairline, staining the iron gate red.Minutes later, gears ground, and the heavy gates swung open.Wild hope lit Leo's eyes. He thought his little show of suffering had won me over.I

"And just hours ago, you sent someone to break her leg."The hall fell silent except for Leo's ragged, desperate breathing."Elena... Elena Rockwell?"Leo slumped in the puddles of spilled champagne, clutching his hair in both hands.Three years of memories rushed through his mind. The woman who'd made soup from cheap potatoes in that old kitchen every day to save him money. The woman who'd stayed up all night checking the books with him when his company was failing. The woman whose eyes had turned cold when he'd handed her a $30,000 check. And all along, she'd been the governor's only daughter!"No... It can't be. It can't be!"Leo slammed his head against the floor and screamed.Handcuffed, Chloe spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva. Her face crumpled as she realized what she'd done. "Impossible! That woman's just a country orphan. There's no way she's the governor's daughter!"Her hair a wild mess, she kept repeating, half-crazed, "This can't be happening!"An officer tightened her

A battering ram smashed the heavy doors open from outside with a boom.Dozens of heavily armed state troopers poured in and chambered rounds in their rifles in unison. The room gasped. Michael Hayes, chief legal counsel to the Texas governor, strode down the red carpet, his face stern.Leo's smile froze, then spread even wider. He straightened his bow tie, pushed through the guests, and hurried over to greet Michael."Mr. Hayes! You came in person!"Leo held out both hands, speaking loudly enough for the room to hear."I knew it. My future father-in-law is too busy to get away, so of course he sent you with an engagement gift for Chloe and me!"The guests whispered about how close Leo must be to the governor's family.Michael didn't even glance at Leo's outstretched hands. He just waved the guards forward to block him.An officer drove the butt of his rifle into Leo's chest, sending him stumbling back.Michael took an order stamped with the Texas state seal from his briefcase and held
