Once we'd set a time for the showing, I hired a cleaner to clear out and throw away the personal things I'd left in the apartment. Then I took my suitcase to a hotel.

I'd barely set my bags down when my phone lit up.

It was an Instagram notification.

Avery had posted something new.

The picture was that wedding photo of the three of us from the day before.

But she'd cropped it, leaving only her and Luca standing side by side, plus a sliver of my shoulder.

Her caption read, "Some people spend their whole lives chasing a light that isn't theirs. Other people are just born standing in it. Thank you, Luca, for always saving the spot beside you for me."

I recognized some of the usernames in the comments. They were Luca's friends.

[OMG, look at them. Avery and Luca are perfect together.]

[Luca spoils Avery like always. You two have to end up together.]

Some of our mutual friends had questions, though.

[Is there a new bride? Where's Chloe? Why can't I even see her in this picture?]

I read the comments and felt strangely calm, as if I were watching a farce that had nothing to do with me.

My phone suddenly buzzed. Avery was calling.

I picked up, and before I could say anything, I heard her voice, thick with tears.

"Chloe! Come quick! Luca... Luca's..."

The call cut off mid-sentence.

I called back. No answer.

I tried again. Still nothing.

I called five times in a row. Each time, it rang until the call ended on its own.

She hadn't even told me where they were.

My heart raced as terrible possibilities flashed through my mind. Luca was heir to the Lorenzetti family. He'd survived three assassination attempts this year alone.

I didn't stop to think. I ran out wearing my hotel slippers.

First I went to Luca's office. Nobody was there.

Then I went to the Lorenzetti estate. Not there either.

I searched until sunset. Finally, I found them at a private club owned by the Lorenzetti family.

Luca and Avery were sitting out on the terrace.

Luca shucked an oyster, squeezed lemon over it, and held it up to Avery's lips.

Avery leaned in, smiling, her makeup flawless and every curl in place.

And me? After running all over town that afternoon, my hair was stuck to my sweaty face, my makeup had smeared, and I'd twisted my ankle on some stairs. I was a mess.

When Avery saw me, she broke into a dazzling smile and turned to Luca.

"See, Luca? I told you Chloe can't let you go.

"Even without us telling her where we were, she found her way here just because she loves you. Feel better now?"

Luca started to smile and opened his mouth to speak.

I walked up, took out my phone, and held Avery's Instagram post in front of him.

"The comments are right."

My voice was calmer than I'd expected.

"You two are perfect for each other. You're both shameless."

Luca's expression turned thunderous.

"Chloe, everyone was just joking. What's gotten into you?

"It's one picture. When did you get so petty?"

I looked at the man I'd loved for seven years and barely recognized him.

When Luca and I first got together, his friends had made the same "joke" about him and Avery being a better match.

Back then, Luca had angrily defended me and chewed out the friend who'd said it.

Now, when people said the same thing, he just thought I was being petty.

I put my phone away and took a deep breath.

"Luca, let's postpone the wedding."

Dead silence.

Luca shot to his feet, fury in his eyes.

"Chloe, do you have any idea what you're saying?

"The Lorenzetti family has already sent out the wedding invitations! And now you want to postpone? Do you think this wedding is some kind of game?"

He advanced on me, one step at a time.

"You think holding the wedding over my head is going to make me crawl to you? Chloe, I saw through your little games a long time ago!"

Right on cue, Avery caught his arm and spoke softly.

"Luca, don't. Chloe's just upset right now..."

I turned and left without arguing.

Once I was out of the club, I called my old mentor, Giulia Rossi.

She was the design director at one of the world's top jewelry brands, and I'd been her star student.

When I graduated, she'd wanted me to work with her, but I'd turned her down for Luca.

She'd been quiet for a long time. Then she said, "Chloe, talent like yours shouldn't be held back by anything. If you ever want to come back, call me. Anytime."

For years, she'd kept sending me opportunities she thought might suit me.

She picked up on the second ring.

"Professor Rossi, is that design position in New York you mentioned still open?"

"Chloe? Aren't you getting married?"

"Not anymore."

I looked up at the darkening Sicilian sky. The first star was already out.

"Right now, all I want is to focus on my career."

I heard her laugh on the other end.

"Wonderful. I'll email you the contract. Sign it by tonight, and you start next Monday."

The auction had already started when Luca came in, his eyes red. Avery wasn't with him. They must have had it out. Then he bid like a madman and bought every piece I'd designed. When I found out, I just shrugged."If some rich guy insists on throwing money at me, who am I to say no?"After the auction, Luca showed up in front of me again."Chloe, I saw the video."His voice was raw."I know I was wrong about you. Could you... could you give me one more chance?"We were together for seven years. Seven whole years! Can you really just throw me away?"I looked at his face.I'd looked at that face for seven years.I used to ache when it frowned and smile when it smiled. Now, looking at it, all I saw was a stranger.I took a step back."Seven years is exactly why. It was way too long, so I'm not wasting the next seven on you."That seemed to break him.Luca's eyes were red as he rasped, "Chloe, do you really have to torture me like this?"If you'll just change your mind, I'll never talk to

Once Luca knew I was in New York, he stayed.I'd heard he'd cleared his schedule for the next six months and handed the Lorenzetti family's affairs to his underboss for now.Every morning on my way to work, I'd see him standing on the corner, staring in my direction. He never came closer. He just watched me from a distance.Three months flew by. My first collection, Daybreak, got the highest score in the company's internal review. The marketing team was much more enthusiastic than anyone expected, and the presale sold out on the first day.The company decided to strike while the iron was hot. It would auction the pieces and invite industry figures and potential clients.Luca managed to get an invitation too.The day before the auction, I stayed late at work. When I came out of the building, Luca was waiting at the curb.He took a few steps toward me, then stopped."Chloe, I've had time to think. I had someone track down the rehearsal footage, but the photographer said you took the vide

Luca immediately bought a ticket on the next flight to New York. But once he calmed down, he realized there was a problem.New York was huge: more than eight million people, five boroughs, and countless streets. He had no idea where I'd gone. Finding me would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. He sat in his car all night. Just before dawn, he went back to my parents' house. This time he didn't say anything. He just sank to his knees in front of the door. When my mom opened the door, he scared her half to death."Eve, I know I was wrong. Please tell me where Chloe is. I'll go bring her home."My mom scoffed."You know you were wrong?"Then she went back inside, came out with a few sheets of paper, and threw them down in front of him. They were records from the ER.Luca picked them up.The records read, "Right palm: open wound, glass fragments embedded. Cleaned and closed with seven stitches."Back: multiple wounds, glass fragments embedded. Cleaned and closed with nine stitches

When Luca got back to his car in a daze, Avery was sitting in the passenger seat, looking at him with concern."Luca, don't be like this."Nobody knows better than me how much she loves you. She's just throwing a fit this time. She'll be back in a few days."Luca stared blankly at her.It suddenly hit him that he'd once promised this seat would always be Chloe's.Because it was the seat closest to him. From there, they could see each other.Somewhere along the way, Avery had started taking that seat whenever she was around. Then Luca noticed something wedged in the crease of the seat, and he went still.A pair of black lace panties. He had no idea how they'd gotten there. And he had even less idea whether Chloe had seen them. That day, after the jewelry store, Chloe had gotten into the passenger seat out of habit. She'd only sat there for a second before quietly moving to the back.He hadn't noticed a thing back then. He'd been too focused on the ring stuck on Avery's finger.Avery fol

The church was empty. All the decorations had been taken down. Only the welcome poster was still standing, right in the middle. It was the photo of the three of us.Luca stood in the center, with Avery smiling sweetly as she held his arm. I stood awkwardly at the edge.Luca's friends and relatives trickled in. When they saw the empty church, their confusion turned to shock."What's going on? Are we in the wrong place?""I was here yesterday. Everything was fine at the rehearsal!""Look at this poster... Why is Avery in the middle?"Luca finally snapped out of it. His face tight with anger, he pulled out his phone and called the wedding planner."Where are the decorations? Why is everything gone?"Paul sounded at a loss."Mr. Lorenzetti, I called you yesterday, but no one picked up."Ms. Russo told me to cancel all the decorations yesterday, and she paid the cancellation fee. I emailed you about it too."Luca went rigid.Someone nearby muttered, "Don't tell me Chloe walked out on the we

Back at the hotel, I got a text from my bank about a charge. My card had just been charged 50,000 euros. The charge came from the most exclusive jewelry store in Palermo.I remembered Avery saying the day before that she wanted a one-of-a-kind tiara to go with her gown.I looked at the text and couldn't even summon the energy to be angry.I'd given that card to Luca myself. When we first got together, the Lorenzetti name was so big that everyone thought I was a gold digger.I didn't want Luca to think so too. So I did the dumbest, most sincere thing I could think of: I handed him the savings I'd built up over the years.I was so nervous when I told him, "Luca, it's not much, but it's everything I have."Luca had been deeply moved. He'd locked the card in his safe and never touched it.Now he'd deliberately used that card to buy another woman a custom tiara fancy enough to upstage the bride.I didn't call Luca or text him to demand answers.I just waited quietly for the final rehearsal.
