Three months after I died, Jack Carter became one of the youngest colonels in the United States Marine Corps. At the promotion ceremony, every person in the room stood up and applauded him. He had a war record, he had money, he had a house that looked out over the woods, and he had the kind of future everyone envied. But only I, already dead, knew that the one person he had truly wanted his whole life was never coming back. The year he turned eighteen, he rebuilt a beat-up old Ford and put the spare key in my hand. He said, "After prom, come find me. I will take you to California." I said yes. But that night I walked down the steps on another man's arm and told him, in front of everyone, that I had never loved him. He did not know that my family had forced that lie out of me. They used Jack's freedom and his future to threaten me. If I dared to leave with him, a forged felony statement would put him in prison and disqualify him from ever enlisting. So I chose to deceive him, and I watched him leave hating me. Later, in the service, he was bullied and framed, and he nearly lost everything. He believed a total stranger had saved him. He did not know that the person who tracked down the witnesses, paid the lawyers, and handed the evidence to the military was me, from the beginning. Later still, he went from a small-time punk out of the harbor district to a decorated officer. Meanwhile my family went bankrupt. I lost the house, the trust, the health coverage, and in the end I died alone in an apartment with a leaking roof. On the day I died, he was standing under the lights receiving a medal. On the screen, everyone was applauding him. On my side of the screen, I was holding the car key from the year I turned eighteen, the one we never used, and I stopped breathing. It took three months for my letters to reach him. Only then did he know. The cruelest words I ever said were said to protect his future. Every kindness in his life that he thought came from a stranger came f

Chapter 1

Three months after I died, Jack Carter was promoted to colonel in the United States Marine Corps.

The ceremony was held in Washington.

Everyone said Jack had finally gotten everything he deserved.

Young, decorated, with a bright road ahead of him.

Only I knew he had not gotten the one thing he actually wanted.

Because that thing was already dead.

Dead in an apartment in Boston with a leaking roof.

It was me.

"Colonel Carter."

The general saluted him.

Jack raised his hand and returned it. The camera flashes went off, and the corner of his mouth lifted on cue.

My soul stood at the very back of the crowd, watching him.

A dozen steps separated us. I could have walked right up to him, close enough to see the new lines at the corners of his eyes, and still he would not have heard my voice.

After the ceremony, a reporter asked him who he most wanted to share the honor with today.

Jack paused for two seconds.

"My men."

It was a flawless answer.

But as he said it, his right hand pressed the outside of his wallet without thinking. Deep inside that wallet was a rusted car key.

When he was eighteen, he had thrown that key down at my feet.

He believed he had gotten rid of it long ago.

In fact, on his last night in town, he had gone back for it in a downpour and picked it up.

At the reception afterward, Jack drank one club soda. Someone introduced him to a young, pretty attorney. He shook her hand politely and found a reason to leave three minutes later.

He had been like this for years.

Dates, handshakes, remembering their names, and then ending it before anything got close.

He let everyone believe he only loved the work.

Maybe by then he believed it himself.

On his way out of the hall, a gray-haired man stopped him.

"Colonel Carter, my name is Daniel Klein. I am an estate attorney."

Jack glanced at the card the man held out.

"I don't have an estate."

"It isn't yours," the lawyer said. "It belongs to Miss Evelyn Whitmore."

Jack's hand stopped in midair.

For that one second there was nothing at all on his face. Only I, standing beside him, saw the knuckles around the card go white.

"What does she want?"

"She passed away three months ago."

People came and went along the corridor. Laughter and the sound of glasses carried through the doors behind them.

Jack did not move.

"When?"

"Three months ago. April seventeenth."

That was the day Jack received the Navy Cross.

While he stood under the lights taking the applause of the whole room, I had just stopped breathing.

"Cause of death?"

"Heart failure."

Jack lowered his eyes, as if weighing whether this was a lie that had taken years to arrive.

Finally he said, coldly, "She and I stopped having anything to do with each other a long time ago."

"She didn't see it that way."

Klein handed him a black file box.

"Miss Whitmore's instructions were that no one but you could open this."

Jack did not take it.

I stood in front of him, close enough to see the blood in his eyes.

Take it, I thought.

I have no other way left to tell you.

After a long time, Jack finally put out his hand.

That hand had dragged three wounded men off a field, had held a rifle, had signed more orders than he could count, and when it touched the box it shook, just slightly.

Late that night, Jack came home alone.

He set the box on the desk in his study, walked around it, and poured himself a drink. Only after he finished it did he cut the seal.

The moment the lid came up, an old car key rolled out.

Under the key were thirty-seven letters that had never been mailed.

And an internal military investigation file.

On the cover was written:

"Concerning the malicious charges brought against Corporal Jack Carter. Evidence provided by Evelyn Whitmore."

Jack stopped breathing.

I stood behind him, and after eighteen years the verdict had finally come.

Except the one on trial had never been me.
