After packing my bags, I went to the pack medical center where I had been treated eight years ago.

The old doctor recognized me, but his first words were not what I expected.

"Why did you never complete the second phase? The wolfsbane purge and the psychic reconstruction?"

I froze.

"Adrian said the risk was too high. That the odds of waking my wolf were under thirty percent."

The doctor frowned.

He pulled up the old records.

The records filled the screen one line at a time.

Wolf still responsive.

Complete the purge within three months. Recovery probability: above seventy percent.

Treatment cost: $480,000.

Payer: Adrian Cross.

When I saw the payment record, my chest seized.

So he really had wanted to save me once.

But that flicker of warmth lasted only a few seconds.

The next page was a treatment cancellation request.

Signed: Adrian Cross.

The cancellation date was one day before Vivian faced the Inter-Pack Council's charges.

The stated reason read:

Patient emotionally unstable. Patient voluntarily declined wolf-recovery treatment.

I stared at the words "voluntarily declined."

In the inner world that had been silent for eight years, something felt crushed all over again.

I knew there was a second phase of treatment.

But I never knew the recovery odds were over seventy percent, or that the fee had already been paid in full.

Back then, the wolfsbane kept sending me into comas, and Adrian signed every document as my registered mate and my Alpha-appointed medical proxy.

When I woke, he held me and said it was an experimental protocol with less than a thirty percent success rate. Black Pine had just survived a border conflict, he told me, and its funds were nearly gone.

He said if I insisted, the medicine and food ordinary members needed for the winter would have to be cut.

I was afraid I would become a burden on the entire pack.

So I ended up comforting him instead.

I said I wouldn't do the treatment.

Even without my wolf, I could still manage Black Pine territory for him.

The doctor sighed.

"We contacted the Alpha afterward. He kept saying you weren't willing to endure the shock of shifting again."

I left the medical center with the copies in hand.

A livestream notice for Vivian's reinstatement hearing popped up on my phone.

The headline read: After eight years in exile, will Black Pine Pack welcome one of its own home?

I suddenly wanted very badly to know.

Where that $480,000 had actually gone.

I hurried to the hearing chamber in the pack's main house.

Before I even reached the door, I heard Vivian's stifled sobs.

"Back then, if you hadn't paid the $480,000 in council restitution for me, wouldn't I have been declared a permanent exile?"

Adrian's voice was very low.

"It's all in the past."

Vivian pressed on.

"But that money was meant to wake Elena's wolf, wasn't it?"

It was quiet inside for a long time.

Adrian didn't deny it.

He said, "By then she had already lost her wolf. But if you had been banished for good, you would have lost your standing, your territory, and every protection you had.

"What I owe her, I can make up for slowly.

"But back then, you had no one but me."

I stood outside the door, barely breathing.

So it wasn't that he had no money.

He had simply traded my chance of ever hearing my wolf again for Vivian's right to return to the pack.

I pushed the door open.

Vivian's eyes were rimmed red, as if I had just walked in on some terrible injustice done to her.

Adrian stood up so fast his knee slammed into the edge of the table.

I set the payment record and the cancellation request down in front of him.

"So you've been lying to me all along."

Adrian opened his mouth.

Not a single word came out.

Vivian said softly, "Elena, I didn't know that was your treatment money."

Then she took a step back.

"You two talk. I'll wait outside."

But Adrian stepped in front of her first.

"She didn't force me.

"I decided to take the money. If you want to blame someone, blame me."

I still clung to one last shred of hope.

"Then what about me?

"What did my wolf count for?"

Adrian's voice went hoarse.

"I'm sorry.

"Elena, you've always been stronger than her. Always more understanding.

"I thought back then that if I saved her first, I would have a whole lifetime to make it up to you.

"I'll find you the best doctors."

I smiled.

"The window to wake her closed years ago.

"And that lifetime you keep talking about stopped belonging to me years ago too."

Vivian said quietly, "I'll go. I don't want to intrude."

But reporters' questions were already rising outside the door.

She stopped and instinctively stepped back behind Adrian.

Adrian immediately pulled off his jacket and shielded her face.

He turned to me.

"It's chaos out there. Let me get her out first. I'll explain when I'm back."

I'll explain when I'm back. Again.

I didn't wait this time.

After leaving the hearing chamber, I rebooked my flight to Silver Ridge for late that same night.

Later, Adrian tried to transfer one of Black Pine's medical funds into the program I ran.It was an enormous amount. The note contained only one line.Compensation for Elena Ward. The finance officer brought me the file.I read it and told her to send it back."The program can accept public restitution from Black Pine Pack."But it will not accept Adrian Cross's private emotional debt."He came to see me himself. It was raining that day.He stood outside the office building without an umbrella. He looked the way I must have at the reinstatement hearing, waiting for him to turn around.Only back then, I had been the one in pieces. Now it was him.By the time I came downstairs, he was soaked through."Elena, I'm not here to make you take it."I just want to do something for you."I looked at him calmly."I don't lack money now."I don't lack doctors."I don't lack standing."And I don't lack people willing to stand beside me."His lips trembled."Then what do you lack?"I said, "The wolf

On the recovery program's open day, the hall filled with young people who had lost their wolves to wolfsbane and trauma. One girl was sixteen. Before her first shift, someone had fed her trace doses of wolfsbane over a long period, and her wolf had never appeared. The doctor called her name softly."Anna."The girl froze. The next second, her head snapped up."I heard her."She threw herself into her mother's arms, sobbing so hard her whole body shook.Applause broke out across the room.I stood outside the training room, my eyes warm.My own wolf still couldn't complete a full shift. But she lay quietly in the depths of my mind.I could feel her breathing. That was enough.Elias stood not far away.He had been watching me the whole time, cedar wound tight around the edge of my consciousness. His voice came through our private mental channel, barely contained."I want to walk over there and hold you right now."I answered, "The event isn't over.""I know."I've been holding back for tw

Six months later, I went to Elias's office of my own accord and knocked. He was working through a border resettlement list. The moment he saw me, he closed the file and strode around the desk to meet me.I gave him my answer."I'm ready to accept our mate bond."His breath stopped for a beat. The next second, he pulled me hard into his arms.Cedar flooded around me, carrying pure, unguarded joy."Elena, do you know how long I've waited to hear that?"He lowered his head and pressed his forehead to mine, his eyes impossibly bright."From today on, everyone will know you're the mate I spent six months wooing."His heat made me laugh."Mate only. The Luna question can wait.""Deal." He held me tighter. "Today we're just celebrating that you finally want me."Two years later, I became Luna of Silver Ridge Pack.I first joined pack governance as head of the recovery program.Through border resettlement, medical reform, and the member protection initiative, I earned the recognition of Silver

During the first awakening session, the pain almost made me dig my nails into my palms.Dr. Monroe guided me as I searched for my shift core. But my mind held nothing except scrambled static, splintering bones, and the memory of wolfsbane burning into my blood eight years ago."Hold on a little longer."My body began to shake out of control.Elias stood outside the observation window. The moment he saw my body start to convulse, he shoved open the training room door and hit the emergency stop. The machine's hum cut out.He crouched in front of me and took my sweat-soaked hand in his."If it hurts, cry out. If you can't take it, stop."Elena, here with me, you don't have to prove your strength by letting yourself get hurt."Tears spilled before I could stop them. Not from the pain.Because there really was someone in this world who knew that pain was allowed to stop.No need to be sensible. No need to endure. No need to grind myself into a silent wasteland just so someone else could be

The exams at the Silver Ridge medical center took an entire day.Dr. Rachel Monroe reviewed the results, her expression grave."The wolfsbane has lingered too long. A full recovery isn't realistic."I nodded.I had known that answer for a long time.Dr. Monroe continued."But your nerves and your shift core still respond. With long-term detox, psychic stimulation, and partial shift training, your wolf may wake again."I went still."She's still alive?""She's been alive all along."All these years, the wolfsbane and trauma kept pushing her back down. Severing the mate bond dealt her another blow."The instant those words landed, my chest began to ache again. But for the first time, the ache wasn't only despair.I thought of eight years ago.Adrian had once brought me that close to recovery. Then he shut that door himself. Then he lied that an abyss waited on the other side.It wasn't an abyss.Behind that door was the other life I should have had.Elias set the treatment agreement in f

Half an hour later, Adrian came rushing in.He charged to the nurses' station, but I was long gone. Before the plane took off, my phone kept buzzing. The screen was full of his name.Elena, where are you?Did you go back to the main house?Rejecting a mate isn't a joke. Retract it now.Your body can't withstand the backlash. Answer me.He even forced open the broken psychic channel between mates. But all that came through was chaos and pain. For the first time, I shut that channel down completely on my own.So Adrian could search for someone this desperately after all.It was just that before, that someone was never me.The announcement told us to switch our devices to airplane mode.I took one last look out the window. The lights of Black Pine territory merged into a single glow in the dark. For eight years, I had believed I couldn't leave this place.Couldn't leave Adrian.Couldn't leave the man who stayed with me through every failed shift and taught me to run a pack without a mind-
