On the recovery program's open day, the hall filled with young people who had lost their wolves to wolfsbane and trauma.

One girl was sixteen.

Before her first shift, someone had fed her trace doses of wolfsbane over a long period, and her wolf had never appeared.

The doctor called her name softly.

"Anna."

The girl froze.

The next second, her head snapped up.

"I heard her."

She threw herself into her mother's arms, sobbing so hard her whole body shook.

Applause broke out across the room.

I stood outside the training room, my eyes warm.

My own wolf still couldn't complete a full shift.

But she lay quietly in the depths of my mind.

I could feel her breathing.

That was enough.

Elias stood not far away.

He had been watching me the whole time, cedar wound tight around the edge of my consciousness.

"I want to walk over there and hold you right now."

I answered, "The event isn't over."

"I know.

"I've been holding back for twenty minutes. The second this ends, you come find me first."

After the event, Vivian suddenly burst into the backstage area.

She was painfully thin, her cap brim pulled low.

The moment she saw me, her eyes went red.

"Elena, are you satisfied now?"

I looked at her.

"Meaning what?"

Her voice shook.

"My reinstatement was revoked. Every pack refuses to take me, and the council is putting me on trial again.

"I have nothing left."

She lunged forward, reaching for my hand.

"Please just let me go, okay?

"I know I was wrong. I really do."

I stepped back.

Cedar crashed down like a wall.

Elias reached her before security, caught her wrist, and pulled me fully into his arms.

"Who said you could touch her?"

His wolf roared with fury through the mind-link, and his arms tightened around me.

Security stepped in at once and took over.

Adrian came hurrying over as well.

Vivian looked at him like a drowning woman spotting her last lifeline.

"Adrian, say something for me.

"You used to protect me more than anyone."

Adrian looked at her.

There wasn't a trace of warmth in his eyes.

"I protected you. So she suffered for eight years."

Vivian froze.

Tears spilled down her face.

"I just loved you too much."

Adrian's voice was raw.

"You loved me. So you destroyed her wolf.

"I protected you. So I destroyed her life.

"You didn't fool me.

"I always knew she would be hurt. I took advantage of how reasonable she was and how much she loved me. I thought I could sacrifice her first and soothe her afterward.

"Vivian, we both deserve to pay."

The Inter-Pack Council's enforcement officers walked in.

Vivian staggered back a step.

Before they took her away, she suddenly looked back at me.

There was hatred in her eyes. And fear.

I looked at her calmly.

I felt neither satisfaction nor pity. She was just noise to me now.

Adrian stood where he was.

After a long while, he said quietly, "I'll turn over all my testimony and submit to the investigation."

I nodded.

"That's what you should do."

He smiled bitterly.

"When you look at me now, is it the same way you look at her?"

I thought about it.

"No."

His eyes lit for an instant.

I said, "When I see her, I still remember those eight years of silence.

"When I see you, I feel nothing at all."

That flicker of light died instantly.

He finally understood.

Even hatred was still a kind of connection.
