Chapter 1

Author: Nameless
Zac Hilton only arrived home three days later.

When he walked into the house, I was lying on the couch watching television.

He exclaimed, “Did you not see my text messages?!”

I did not even look at him. “I did, but I was busy. I forgot about it the moment I received it.”

He had an incredulous expression.

It was not surprising for him to react that way. In the past, whenever I received his text messages, I would be happily waiting for him downstairs, half an hour before he arrived.

He was quiet for a while before saying, “I haven’t eaten anything today. You can just make something for me.”

He was a very picky eater. He disliked packed food on trains. Whenever he came back from his business trips, I would cook for him to satisfy his cravings.

My show had just ended. I looked up at him and pointed at the delivery flyers on the table.

“I saw these in our mailbox previously. It seems like there are some opening discounts.”

Zac looked unhappy. “I’m really hungry now. Even if you’re mad at me, you should cook.”

I looked at him, puzzled. “Can’t you order delivery? Besides, I’m not angry.”

Of course he did not believe me.

He continued to mutter, “Faye’s all alone in a different city. I’m only taking care of her as a friend.”

“Sure.”

He rubbed his forehead and said tiredly, “Enough, I really don’t have that much time on hand to cheer you up.”

I sighed. “If you’re tired, you should just rest. I’m not expecting you to cheer me up.”

He was at a loss for words. His breathing started to become heavier.

I knew he was angry.

After a while, he took out a gift box from his luggage and tossed it at me.

He snorted. “Your birthday present. This should be enough.”

I simply placed it on the coffee table. “Thank you.”

He was stunned, then his face fell. “Is that all?”

I was dumbfounded. Then, I immediately remembered that we had a promise in the past. Regardless of whose birthday it was, we had to prepare presents for each other.

“Oh, sorry. I was too engrossed in the film. I’ve forgotten about it.”

I was a little embarrassed. “I’ll make it up to you later. Why don’t I transfer you the money?”

He glared at me intently. I felt a little awkward, and immediately transferred him the money for the present.

Then, I looked at my watch and went to my bedroom to put on a jacket.

He was stunned when I walked into the living room.

“Are you going out? You put on makeup earlier because you’re heading out? Not because you’re welcoming me?”

I stared at him, puzzled. “Didn’t you say that it’s a waste of time for me to put on makeup at home? Why would I do that to welcome you?”

I ignored his stunned expression and opened the door.

“Besides, Piper’s my girlfriend. I hope you can respect her in the future.“That’s all, goodbye.”He ended his call, but his phone started to buzz non-stop. He switched off his phone and looked at me pleadingly, “Piper, can we… would we still be able to…” I stared intently at him and sighed. “I’m going overseas. It’s best that we break…” “No!” He begged me, “Don’t say that!“If you’re going overseas, I… I’ll…”He looked like he had made up his mind on a huge decision. He said firmly, “I’ll go with you!”Undeniably, I was shocked by his commitment. I knew his career was doing well in the country, and all his connections were here. He was willing to give all that up because of me?Zac saw that I was not saying anything, so he hugged me tightly and sobbed next to my ear, “Piper, I’ve really learned from my mistakes. Please forgive me, alright?”I recalled our past, and I felt really upset. However, my mind only grew clearer. “Zac, let’s break up.” After that day, I move

Zac was still hesitating, but he had already parked before the subway station entrance. I got out of the car, and he said, “Are you really okay by yourself?”I said indifferently, “What harm is there to take a subway ride in broad daylight? Just go, don’t make her wait for too long.” After Zac left, I walked around the area and had lunch. I was going to leave the country in a few days. I wanted to enjoy local cuisine before I left. I went home very late, and no one was at home. It was pretty normal. I bet Zac was still attending Jack’s wedding. The next day, I walked into the living room after I woke up. Then, I saw Zac sitting motionlessly on the couch. He heard the sound of my footsteps, and he met my gaze. I did not know what else to say. “You’re back early.” He did not answer me. Instead, he looked at me sadly. After a while, he spoke hoarsely.“You didn’t go out for documentation purposes yesterday. You were just shopping, right?”I was a little surprised. How

After I put my containers into the trash, I said, “Sure, go ahead.” He became quiet. When I walked out of the kitchen with the trash bag, he said, “Aren’t you mad?”I simply answered, “Why would I be? Didn’t you say that what happened between Faye and you is history, and she’s just a friend in your friend group?“Both of you have to attend the wedding anyway. It’s normal to go together.” “Piper, let’s talk…”I stopped him.“You must be tired from taking care of her all night. You should catch some rest today. I have something to do, so I won’t bother you any longer.” Then, I took my laptop and went into the study. I shut the door and started to watch shows. We spent the next few days like roommates. On Saturday, when I was about to make breakfast, I saw that breakfast was already served on the dining table. Zac smiled and said, “Come and eat. After you finish eating, I’ll send you to where you need to go.” I had forgotten about my lie, so I felt a little awkward. Then,

In the past, whenever I asked Zac about his whereabouts or his estimated time home, he would be annoyed at me. “Can you not check up on me like my mom? I don’t need to tell you everything!”I apologized to him for a long time before he decided to forgive me. He reminded me to never ask him those questions again. I texted him a thumbs up emoji. He sent another text message: Don’t overthink this. I’m sleeping in her living room, and I promise that nothing will happen!I did not reply to him and went straight to bed. I also drank a little, so I fell into a deep sleep. When I woke up, it was almost noon. The timing was a little awkward for breakfast, so I had brunch. I ordered food delivery and got myself a pasta. The pasta was really good. When I was eating happily, Zac returned. He sniffed the air and frowned. I knew he smelt the pasta sauce in the air. He did not like tomatoes, so he did not allow me to eat any dish that had tomatoes in them. He would be mad if I bou

I frowned. He must have overheard my conversation with my colleagues. However, it had been half an hour since we talked about my overseas work assignment. Was he waiting outside of the private room all this while? My colleagues felt a little awkward in this situation. They asked me if I needed help. I thanked them and told them I would be able to handle it myself. Then, they bade goodbye and left. Before leaving, they told me to call them if I needed help. “Tell me, Piper.” Zac’s eyes looked a little frantic. “Are you really leaving?”I nodded. He would have found out eventually. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier? If I hadn’t heard it today, how long would you have kept this a secret from me?”“Uh, I wanted to tell you, but I’ve been too busy with my handovers recently. Besides, you seem very busy too. I feel there’s no point troubling you over such trivial matters.” Zac’s eyes looked hurt.“How is this a trivial matter? You’re my girlfriend. No matter how big or small the

He was stunned. Three seconds later, he stopped me from lying down. “Let’s talk.” I looked at him, speechless. He took a deep breath.“That post is to commemorate our gathering. It doesn’t mean anything. Don’t overthink it.”I was really too tired, so I quickly nodded. “Alright, got it.” A hint of impatience flashed in his eyes.“Why are you refusing communication? Are you still mad at me for meeting up with Faye? I’ve told you, she’s part of the friend group.“Yes, we had our history, but it’s in the past. If you really care about it, I’ll bring you to our future gatherings too.” I nodded again, “Alright, I get it. I’m really tired, can you let me sleep?”Zac did not say anything else. He sighed and wanted to get into the bed. I jolted up.“What are you doing?”He froze, then he glared at me coldly before leaving and slamming the door behind him. Then, he kicked the door to the master bedroom open. After his interruption, I was worried that it would be hard for me to
