Karl’s POV

I should have left.

The jurisdiction thing was settled, my parents’ case was dead in the water, and the man being booked behind the reinforced door had nothing to do with my snake or my nails or my useless folder of photographs that two police stations had now declined to act on.

Every rational part of my brain was telling me to stand up, walk through the automatic doors, get in my car, and drive home.

My legs disagreed.

They’d locked into position on the plastic bench—knees together

  • He Wants Me More After Divorce   Chapter 310

Estelle’s POVThree days since we last saw each other. Still nothing.I did the whole thing again. Clinic, patients, school run, dinner, bedtime. The routine was a cage and I was grateful for the bars because bars meant structure and structure meant I didn’t have to decide anything.I checked my phone eleven times. I counted because counting gave me something to be angry at myself about, and anger was easier than the other thing.Eleven times in ten hours.Once per hour, roughly, except for the two-to-three-o’clock stretch when I checked it three times in forty minutes because Chloe had asked about Harrison at pickup and the question had rattled loose something in my chest that wouldn’t settle back down.I could understand him not texting me. I’d ended it. I’d said the words, drawn the line, delivered the verdict.Fine. I could absorb that.I’d asked for this silence and now I had it and it was excruciating but it was mine. But Lucas.Harrison had not asked about Lucas in two days. Ha

Estelle’s POVI made pasta. Butter and parmesan for Lucas—his reliable safe food, the meal he’d eat when he wouldn’t eat anything else. Tomato sauce for Chloe, who wanted everything red and would probably request ketchup on her birthday cake.We sat at the table. Chloe twirled her pasta with focus, loading each forkful. Lucas pushed his around his plate, dragging the fork through the butter in long slow lines, making tracks in the parmesan without lifting any of it to his mouth.“Is Daddy coming tonight?” Chloe asked.“Not tonight, sweetheart.”“Why not?”“He’s busy.”“Busy doing what?”“Just…busy, Chloe.”Chloe set her fork down. “Is he busy like when you say ‘we’ll see,’ which means no? Or busy like actually busy?”“He has things to take care of.”“What things?”“Grown-up things.”“That’s not an answer, Mama. That’s what adults say when they don’t want to give an answer.”“Chloe,” I said tiredly. She picked up her fork again. She twirled a large portion, put it in her mouth, chewed

Estelle’s POVI reached across the bed before my eyes were open. My hand landed on cold sheet.I yanked it back, rolled over, and lay there staring at the ceiling. My arm sat across my stomach where I’d pulled it, fingers still curled from gripping nothing.I’d memorized his warmth in one night and my body was already searching for it at 6:14 in the morning.I grabbed my phone. Empty screen. My message from yesterday sitting there, delivered but unanswered. No typing indicator.Nothing.I’d told him to leave. I’d given him two speeches about love not being enough, slept with him between both of them, cried into his neck, and let him walk out my front door. And now I was checking my phone before sunrise.I dropped it face-down on the mattress and got up.The shower was too hot. I turned the handle and stepped in and the water scalded my shoulder. I didn’t adjust it. I stood there and let it burn because the burning had a location and a cause, which was more than I could say for anythin

Lyndsey’s POVThe wheelchair arrived and I lowered myself into it with both hands gripping the armrests and my teeth clenched against the incision. The nurse wheeled me into the elevator, down two floors, through a long hallway to the NICU’s double doors.“Five minutes early,” she said apologetically. “I’ll let them know you’re here.”She left me in the anteroom. A sink on one wall, hand sanitizer beside it, a single chair. I sat in the wheelchair and looked at my hands. They were swollen from the IV fluids. My knuckles were puffy and my skin stretched and shiny. The hospital landline was mounted on the wall beside the sanitizer dispenser. I picked it up and dialed Grieves from memory. He answered on the second ring. “This is Grieves.”“It’s Lyndsey.”A beat. I heard him shift. Then nothing. He was waiting for me to tell him why I’d called, which meant he already knew.“How long?” I asked.“Ms. Donovan—”“How long have you been feeding information to my mother?”Four seconds of nothin

Lyndsey’s POVMom’s heels hit the corridor floor in two sharp clicks per step. I heard her before the door opened—unhurried, evenly spaced, a woman who had never rushed for anything and wasn’t about to start now.She came in already moving. The thermos went on the tray table. Something that smelled like ginger cutting through the stale recycled air of the room. The cashmere wrap came open in her hands, dove gray, and she draped it across my shoulders without asking, smoothing the fabric over my collarbones, adjusting the fold at the back of my neck with two fingers.“You look terrible,” she said pleasantly.“Thank you, Mother.”“The bags under your eyes could carry shopping.” She stepped back, examined me, adjusted the wrap again. “Are you eating?”“I was up at four pumping colostrum into a plastic bottle for a baby I’ve held once,” I said tiredly. “Eating wasn’t exactly the priority.”Mom unscrewed the thermos cap and poured. She set the cap on the tray table beside my water jug.“Dr

Claire’s POVRoom 412 had a window in the door. A narrow panel of reinforced glass, about eight inches wide, set at eye level.I stopped in front of it.Through the glass I could see my son.The cast on his left arm ran from just below his elbow to the base of his fingers, leaving only the tips exposed. The stitches across his forehead formed a dark crooked line, each one distinct, black thread pulled tight through swollen skin.Twelve of them. His face was slack. Mouth slightly open, jaw loose, the muscles surrendered in a way I’d never seen on my son while he was conscious.Harrison held his jaw locked—always had, since he was a teenager, since he learned that a clenched jaw looked like control and control was the only currency that bought you anything in rooms full of people waiting for you to flinch. He got that from me. The jaw. The posture. The refusal to let his face say what his body was feeling. But the rest of it—lying there with the sedation pulling every learned expression

Karl’s POVDaisy opened the door and gave me a long look before stepping aside to let me through. I walked into the hallway and Estelle appeared from the kitchen doorway, and the sight of her nearly stopped me in my tracks. She looked wrecked. Red-rimmed eyes with no makeup to hide them, her hair un

Harrison’s POVMy phone rang and I grabbed it immediately. “Well?”My partner at Capella sounded amused. “Karl said yes.
