Chapter 1

It was my birthday. For once, Rowan Shore had time to be with me.

I was just about to cut the cake when his phone buzzed.

"I need to take this." He smiled at me, his voice still carrying his earlier tenderness.

I nodded and watched as he answered the call. "Hello?"

I heard Tina Green's shrill voice on the other end of the line. She sounded on the verge of tears as she shrieked, "Rowan! Miranda wants to jump off the building! S-She's having a meltdown, and she's screaming for you! She won't let anyone get close."

The phone crackled with harsh static, followed by Miranda Kane's hysterical screams. "Ro, are you with Clara? Do you not want me anymore?"

Her voice was so shrill that it almost pierced my eardrums. "I knew it! I knew that wretched woman…"

Rowan turned ashen. He cried in panic, "Miranda, calm down! I'll be right—"

I instinctively grabbed his wrist. "Rowan, the Kane residence has a psychiatrist on standby around the clock. Their security system—"

Tina abruptly started shouting again. "Is Clara Sterling stopping you from coming here? Miranda's about to die, yet she's…"

"Stop this!" Rowan scowled, sounding displeased. "Miranda's in danger now!"

Then, he softened his tone and reached out to caress my face. "Be good, alright? I'll be back soon."

I turned away to avoid his touch.

On the other end of the line, Tina screamed, "Hurry up and get over here, Rowan! Miranda's already at the edge of the roof! She says… she says if you still don't come, she'll…"

Rowan's eyes turned red. "Clara, we can celebrate your birthday some other time. Miranda is what matters now. I'll never be able to forgive myself if anything happens to her."

He pinched his nose bridge. "I swear I'll spend all my time with you after this."

I sneered. "You said that the last time. The time before that, too."

"I mean it this time." He grabbed my shoulders, but his eyes were already on the door. "I swear that we'll go to Maldove once Miranda's condition has—"

Before he could finish, Tina started berating me on the other end of the line. "You're a shameless wretch, Clara! Do you have to pick a fight with Miranda now?"

Then, there was a violent coughing fit. "Ro, I… I'm so dizzy…"

"Miranda! Miranda, hang in there!" Rowan shouted into the phone, his usual grace and composure nowhere in sight.

Miranda let out a heart-wrenching scream, followed by the sound of something falling to the floor with a heavy thud.

Tina cried out, "Miranda slit her wrist! There's blood everywhere! You need to be here now!"

"Ro… save me…" Miranda's voice suddenly became weak.

Rowan took a deep breath. "Wait for me at home, alright? I'll be back once I've handled this."

When the door slammed shut, I heard myself say, "Don't bother coming back once you leave."

All that answered me was the sound of the elevator arriving with a ding.

I stared at the mess on the table. "System, I give up."

Once upon a time, Rowan would be racked with guilt throughout the night for standing me up. He would hurry home as quickly as possible just so he could apologize to me.

When had even pretending to care become too much trouble?

When Miranda came into the hospital room, Rowan was holding my hand to his cheek and murmuring sweet nothings to me.She placed a hand on his shoulder. "Ro, she's—""Get out." He didn't even look up, and his voice was as frosty as could be."Snap out of it!" She grabbed his face, forcing him to look at her. "The doctor has already pronounced the time of death! How much longer will you lie to yourself?"Rowan shot to his feet, making the chair screech against the floor. He wrapped a hand around her neck, pinning her to the wall. "And who do you think caused this? Huh?"He brushed his thumb against her pulsing artery. "Have you had fun pretending to be sick all these years? Who's the one who's been threatening to kill themselves every time she needed me?"Miranda's pearl necklace snapped amid her struggle, and the pearls scattered across the floor. She grabbed Rowan's wrist, digging her nails into his flesh. "I… I genuinely love you…""Love?" He laughed, tightening his grip. "So,

I slowly opened my eyes, squinting in discomfort from the blinding white lights. It was silent in the hospital room save for the beeping of the heart rate monitor. Rowan had fallen asleep by my bedside, his hand still gripping mine tightly. He looked haggard, and his dark eye circles were alarming. His jaw was covered in stubble, and even asleep, his brows were tightly knit.I tried to move a finger, which immediately woke him. His bloodshot eyes were filled with alarm as he rasped, "You're up?"Rowan frantically pressed the call button before pouring me some water. He was so flustered that he spilled the water."Calm down. Drink slowly." He carefully held a straw to my lips, his fingers trembling in the process.I scanned my surroundings, noticing that everything sharp in the room had disappeared. The curtain cords had been removed, and even the switch for the bedside lamp had been sealed with tape.I only saw paper cups, plastic cutlery, and soft-bristled toothbrushes. He ha

The heart rate monitor's line finally stabilized, but my consciousness remained consumed by darkness. I didn't want to wake up just yet.Rowan sat by my bed, looking like his soul had been sucked out. He held my hand tightly enough to break my bones, abruptly releasing me when he realized what he was doing. Then, he brushed my fingertips with his trembling ones, afraid of hurting me."Don't leave me," he said brokenly. His tears landed on my hand, feeling like they would burn right through my skin. His eyes were sunken and bloodshot. It had been days since he'd slept. When a nurse came to change my bandage, he shot to his feet, overturning the chair in his haste. "Be gentle. She can't stand being in pain."The nurse was startled by him and made sure to handle me gently.Rowan had been able to maintain some semblance of rationality during my first two suicide attempts. This time, however, he broke down completely."She moved!" He grabbed the doctor's sleeve, saying shakily, "I sa

Rowan sat by my bed, his fingers tapping his knee neurotically.Recently, he'd spent all his time by my side. The bruises under his eyes were proof of how long he'd gone without proper rest. His phone was face-down on the bedside table. Since the last incident, he'd stopped taking Tina's calls."It's our wedding anniversary today," he said softly, placing a small cake before me. "I remember you saying that you liked blueberry-flavored ones."Rowan's fingers shook slightly as he unwrapped the packaging. He'd just lit the candles on the cake when his phone started buzzing incessantly.Though unable to see the screen, he still glanced at it. Then, he blanched. After a few seconds of hesitation, he still answered the call."There's an emergency at work…" He forced a smile at me. "I'll be right back."I stared at his back as he hurried off, reminded of the last incident and the one before that. Each time, he'd chosen to go to Miranda's rescue.Right before the door swung shut, I hea

I slowly opened my eyes, squinting in discomfort from the blinding white lights. The smell of disinfectant wafted into my nose, and I heard the rhythmic beeping of the heart rate monitor beside me."You're up." A hoarse voice rang out.I turned to see Rowan's haggard face. His eyes were bloodshot, and his chin was covered in stubble. His suit was wrinkled. He looked like he'd gone without sleep for days.He held my hand tightly, his palm clammy with sweat. "You scared the hell out of me. This is the second time now."His voice shook, and he traced the bandage on my wrist. "I almost… almost lost you again…"He choked up. "I'm sorry. I'll take good care of you from…"His tears landed on our hands before he could finish.I calmly tried to pull away, but Rowan held on tighter, seemingly alarmed. "Don't… Don't push me away… I swear I won't leave you anymore. I swear!"His phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and turned it off without looking at it, but I happened to catch

In the hospital, Rowan sat by Miranda's bedside, his fingers tapping away at his phone. "Remember to take your medicine per the schedule."He furrowed his brows after sending the message.Five minutes passed.Ten minutes passed.Even after 15 minutes, all he saw was that the messages had been read. His hand balled into a fist, and his knuckles turned white."Why hasn't she replied?" he mumbled to himself. Suddenly, an inexplicable panic surged in him.Miranda, who lay on the hospital bed, noticed something was off about him and immediately coughed weakly. "Ro, my head hurts…"Rowan looked up, but his gaze drifted to the window. Then, he shot to his feet. "I need to head home."Miranda's expression darkened slightly. "Are you abandoning me?"Her voice started shaking. "You said you'd never leave me.""Clara's alone at home." Rowan's voice was strained. "I'm worried about her.""What about me?" Tears streamed down Miranda's face. "You're all I have now! If you leave, I'll end
