Chapter 38

I could feel the tension before the police even spoke. The air in the hospital lobby was heavy, like everyone’s breath had decided to hold itself hostage.

One of the officers, tall with sharp eyes, stepped forward. “We are looking for Mia Collins,” he announced.

Dr. Bertham, our hospital manager, raised an eyebrow. “May I know what she has done?” Her tone was polite, but there was a nervous twitch in her jaw.

“Call her here,” the officer said. “Then we’ll tell you exactly what she has done.”

Dr. Bertham gave a small nod to a nearby nurse, who ran upstairs to fetch Mia. I folded my arms and leaned slightly against the wall, my heartbeat thumping against my ribs. I already knew what this was about, but watching it unfold was something else entirely.

A few moments later, Mia came down the staircase, her heels clicking against the polished tiles like a countdown. She wore her usual smug expression, as if the hospital itself belonged to her.

“Mrs. Bertham, you asked for me?” she

Chapter 47She stepped forward, raising her hand again, but this time I caught her wrist before it could land on my cheek. Her eyes went wide never expecting that i would do that.“How dare you touch my mother!” Cassandra shot up from the couch, rushing toward me. “Do you want to rub your bad luck on her? Is that it?” Her voice was a sharp, mocking hiss.I let go of Mrs. Rivers’ wrist slowly, keeping my voice level but cold. “You can talk to me however you want and trust me, I can take it but if either of you says one more word against my mother…” I stopped, breathing heavily, not trusting myself to finish that sentence.Mrs. Rivers narrowed her eyes. “You dare threaten me....”I hissed under my breath. “I’ve given you respect, and where has it gotten me, huhhhh???? It’s gotten me nowhere. So from now on, don’t expect it. Be ready for what is to come now.”Her mouth fell open slightly. “You are leaving my house, Elena.”I laughed once, short and humorless. “Ohhhh.... you guys really c

Chapter 46 A moment later, the soft rumble of his engine faded down the street. What I didn’t know then was that in the shadows, a camera lens had clicked. More than once. Someone had been watching and capturing my every move. I had no idea that that happened.I stepped inside the house, my mind still somewhere else entirely, only to be brought crashing back by the atmosphere that greeted me.Mrs. Rivers and Cassandra were sitting in the living room, but when they turned their heads toward me, the looks they gave… made me sick It wasn’t new. I’d seen those looks before. The ones that made me feel like something under their shoe. Like I was some filthy person but tonight, it carried an extra layer of venom.I kept my mouth shut and moved toward the stairs but before my foot even touched the first step, Mrs. Rivers’ voice cracked through the air.“And where do you think you’re going, madam?”I froze mid-step and turned slowly, meeting her eyes. “What kind of question is that… Mother?

Chapter 45The moment the cool weight of Lucian’s ring slid onto my finger, I could see the change in him instantly. His shoulders loosened, his jaw unclenched, and the grief lingering in his eyes seemed to soften just a little. It was as if handing that piece of his past to me had lifted something heavy off his chest, it felt like he’d finally allowed someone else to carry a fraction of it.He gave me a small, genuine smile, wiped the dampness from his cheeks with the heel of his palm, and stood up from where he’d been sitting.“Now,” he said with a tone lighter than before, “let’s take you home.”I nodded, relieved to see him breathing a little easier. We left his house without much more conversation. He opened the passenger door for me, a small gesture, but one that caught me off guard because so few people in my life had been… gentle lately. I slid into the seat and pulled the door shut, listening as the engine hummed to life. The drive was quiet, not awkward, but still. Only the

Chapter 44He stammered slightly. “No... nothing. It’s.... anyways, you said you were ready, so… yeah, I wanted to show you something.”I crossed my arms. “That was a smooth deflection, wouldn't you agree???"His mouth twitched in a half-smile, and he gestured for me to follow him down the hall.We stopped in front of a door at the far end. When he opened it, I was met with a rush of soft pastel colours. Creams, blush pinks and muted golds. My hand flew to my mouth. “Oh… Lucian…”The room was beautiful. Not just pretty but it was carefully and lovingly arranged. Delicate lace curtains filtered sunlight into golden beams. A small vanity stood against the wall, its surface lined with perfumes and hairbrushes as if waiting for someone to return. There were framed photos on the shelves, a plush throw over the bed, and the faint scent of lavender lingering in the air.“Why is…” I turned to him slowly. “Why is your room decorated so… girly?”His eyes dropped to the floor. “It’s not my room

Chapter 43The moment I heard that name, it rang a bell somewhere in my mind, faint but insistent, like an echo bouncing in a half-forgotten room. Lucian Evans. Why did it feel familiar????? I searched my memory, shuffling through fragments of faces, voices and moments, but nothing settled into place. My brain was too tired to chase ghosts.“OK… nice meeting you, Lucian,” I finally said, my voice softer than I intended. “I’m Elena..... Elena Rivers.”His eyes softened at the sound of my name, as if it meant something to him too.“Thank you for saving my life,” I continued, shifting awkwardly on the chair, “but I’ll have to leave now. I have my own life to get back to… and I appreciate your help but… You know…” I trailed off, looking at my hands. “I have to stand and fight my battles by myself. If I don’t fight, how will I ever defeat them all?”Lucian studied me for a moment, his gaze both warm and searching. Then, with a small smile that didn’t quite hide the shadow in his eyes, he

Chapter 42The shower was heavenly. Hot water pounding against my tired muscles, steam curling around me. My thoughts wandered to Nathan. Was he safe? Was he worried? And Mia… I clenched my jaw at the thought of her. She wasn’t going to stop. I could feel it in my bones. She wouldn’t stop until she had silenced me for good. When I stepped out of the shower, wrapped in a robe, there was a knock on the door.“Come in,” I called. He stepped inside, holding a neatly folded set of nightwear. “Here,” he said, offering it to me but as he stepped forward, his slippers caught on the water dripping from my hair onto the floor.I gasped as he almost slipped, but instinct kicked in and I grabbed his arm, steadying him.“Well,” he chuckled, looking amused, “I guess you’ve repaid the favour already.”“Yeah,” I said with a small laugh, “guess we’re even now.”He smiled again, this time softer. “When you’re done, come downstairs. I made dinner.”“Dinner?” I raised a brow.“Don’t look so surprised,” h
