Chapter five

Rosaline's POV:

My eyes scan through the papers. "Alaric Sylvester gets married at the Fontaine hall with just friends and family to his secretary Rosaline Carter....."

Mia and violet scroll through their phones. "This is the talk of the century!" They squeal with giggles.

I raise my head with wide eyes and contemplate my answer. Did Mr Sylvester know this?

He walks in and everyone freezes. Violet hides her phone behind her back and so does Mia.

His stare moves from us to the confetti litter on the floor, then to me and back to them.

"Is this an amusement park? Or a club?"

Silence.

Cold whooshes over the entire place and I feel goosebumps and see Jonas visibly shiver.

I exhale and walk over to Mr Sylvester.

He frowns and steps back. I hand him the papers. His frown deepens and he takes it from me.

He chokes and Jonas rushes to open a bottle of water for him. "Here sir."

He drinks the water and hiccups. We bite down our laughter, and I hand him a handkerchief.

"What are you doing still standing here?!" He barks and makes everyone jump. He turns to me with red eyes. "My office. Now."

I smile at the entire crew that shuffle to get to work and follow him.

"What did you say to them?"

"Nothing. I was waiting for you to say something first."

He turned to the right side of the windows that stares at the city view. "This is my mother's doing." He whispers.

"What's wrong with it going public?" I ask with a shrug.

"There's nothing wrong with it." He replies.

"Then what's..."

"For Christ sake miss Carter! How would you feel if someone other than you revealed something about you?"

"Oh..."

"Oh?!"

I blinked at him. "Am I to say something else sir?"

He glares at me and picks up his coat.

"One more thing..." I say before he leaves. "We are to act like a couple at work right?"

He closes his eyes for some seconds and when he opens them, he's pissed. "Did you read the contract or not?"

I nod. A yes or no would not kill you would it?

He pauses at the door. "What's the first thing on my schedule today? "

"You are to view the new arrivals at Royalty Furniture."

"Get your coat. You're coming with me."

"You were to go with Jonas sir."

"Do not keep me waiting." He walks out of his office and bangs the door.

I clench my fists. This is just for three years Rosie. I know it's only day two, but hang in there.

I put on a smile and walk out of his office. "I'm so sorry Jonas but I'll be accompanying Mr Sylvester to Royalty Furniture this morning."

"Oh it's fine." He puffs with a smile. "I will leave you two to a time of your own."

I smile, pick up my bag and run after him. By the time I'm outside, his car is no where to be found.

A text pops up on my phone.

"Ten minutes. Don't make me wait."

Shit.

I haul the closest taxi and hop in. "Royalty Furniture please. I need to be there in ten minutes or less."

"That's impossible ma'am. The road's packed."

I hop out and check my watch. 9 minutes. A motorcycle zooms past me and splashes water.

"Hey!" I yell, he stops. He bows.

"I'm sorry."

I pause. A good idea. A fast one. "If you're sorry, give me a ride."

He bows and reverses. "To where beautiful lady."

Beautiful? Or please. Sensible is the word.

"Royalty Furniture." I reply. "Can you get me there in..." I look at my watch again. "Five?"

He hands me a helmet. "Hop on."

He zooms off and just as it strikes 9:25, we are in front of Royalty Furniture. The same time with Mr Sylvester's car zooming in.

"Thank you." I say and hand him a twenty.

"No thank you. It was the least I could do." He smiles at me. "Have a great day beautiful."

A chuckle slips from my mouth.

I run to open the door for Mr Sylvester but he opens it himself and slams the door onto my knee.

He walks out of the car and stares at me from my head to my toe. His eyes linger on the wet part of my skirt then he meets my eyes.

I try to smile. "I had some issues..."

"I don't care. Fix it before you join me." He walks in and leaves me there.

I stare at my reflection in the restroom mirror after I change to the new skirt I bought. I work to steady my breathing.

I hate him.

I fucking hate him!

I take in deep breaths. In... out. And when I'm calm, I force a smile onto my face and leave to find him. I find him few inches from the main door to the VIP furniture hall and I stand beside him.

He looks at my skirt and says nothing.

Few minutes into viewing the new arrivals, the manager meets my gaze, smiles and walks to stand beside me.

"Is it true you're married to Mr Sylvester?"

"Yes. It's true." Mr Sylvester replies before I can speak. "She's my wife." He walks close to me and takes my hand. " And I'd suggest you focus on the task at hand."

Mr Raymond bows and apologizes. Mr Sylvester lets go of my hand without suspicion and continues.

After viewing the arrivals, people including the staff and customers watch us. He opens the door for me and I step in.

I hear gushes and gasps. He clicks my seatbelt and I smile at him. We zoom off.

Instead of heading to the office, his driver diverts.

"Where are we going?"

"To see my mother."

Oh... His mother.

I smile at her when we arrive.

"Why didn't you let me know before letting the entire press in all of LA know?"

His father walks into the living room. "It wasn't your mother. It was I."

"Father I believe..."

"This is good for the company. It is better if everyone knows."

"I understand. But I should have been the one to let the world know."

"What is done is done. It doesn't matter who did it. All that matters is that the end product was the same."

He looks at me and I bow. He ignores me and walks away.

Something was off between Mr Sylvester and his father. I could feel the tension.

"Don't mind my husband." His mother says to me. "He's..."

"Let's go." Mr Sylvester says to me and takes my hand. I smile at his mother again. Outside, he lets go of my hand.

"Could you please stop smiling?!" He says through clenched teeth.

I furrow my brows. "Why are you angry at me? I wasn't the one who revealed it."

He walks the car without sparing me a word. He's about to open his door when I shut it and hug him.

"What do you think you're doing?!"

"Your father's watching. And I'm making it look like I'm consoling you." I pause. "I'll let go after three seconds."

One. Two. Three.

I let go.

"Don't you ever do that again." He whispers through clenched teeth, then he opens the door for me.

During the ride, a sharp pain jabs at my stomach. I grit my teeth.

"What is it?"

"Nothing."

We arrive his house and walks to his room while I walk to mine.

I'm barely past the door to my room when the pain returns. I crouch to my knee and grab my stomach.

It jabs me again and I groan.

Mr Sylvester bangs on my door. "Miss Carter! What's wrong?!"

The pain jabs again and I scream. He opens the door and crouches beside me.

"What is wrong?"

"I'm fine." I reply through clenched teeth and try to stand. I lose my footing and he catches me.

"Are you sure..."

What part of I'm fine doesn't he understand? I try to pry myself from his grip but he holds unto me.

The pain jabs me again, I snap and punch his face.

"I said I'm fine!!"

My typing ceases and I stare from one face to another. "Lunch." I giggle. "Yeah. Lunch." Violet hooks her hand with mine and drags me along with her. We settle in our usual lunch restaurant. I order spicy pasta with pepper soup and just water. Jonas wrinkles his face at my choice of food. "How do you digest so much spice lady Rosie?"I shrug. "Yeah." Amara says. "You only ever eat spicy food. Why?""Every other thing just tastes like... Ash.""That's weird." Violet mumbles. "Anywho... Today's bill's on me!""Why?" Jonas blurts out. Got lost or snooping around? My mother smiles and takes Carter's hands in hers. "Finding your way around here can be trouble for our guest. Come."I watch them move back to the dinning room and yesterday replays in my head. Was she shameless or just didn't care? It was difficult to tell that from Miss Carter. Boring ol her who always had her nose in her job. She did not decline. Despite all she knew about me. Despite all people said about me. All she asks is if she'd be paid overtime?! Fucking payment! My skin crawls at the thought of living in the same house with this woman. She always gets on my nerves. It was soul biting to think about having to deal with it at a closer range. "Don't you need an heir?" I ask the one thing that's been on my mind all night. Mr Sylvester chokes on his expensive wine. I hand him a hanky and stand back as he recollects himself. "An heir?!" He echoes, his eyes red rimmed from the coughing fit. When I see his okay, I return to my seat. "Yes. You're Alaric Sylvester. Surely you want more out of this marriage than...I don't know, the title of a married man?" He straightens his back, works his tie and clears his throat. "Do not jump into rash conclusions. I have no need of heirs ..and not from you." I shrug. "I don't mind, honestly. A kid would sell this whole marriage thing faster. And we can share custody." His eyes narrow and he leans forward, "if I didn't know better, Miss Carter, I'd say you were trying to get into my bed." I blink. Th
