Chapter 5

作者: Insomniac Moon
Josephine's expression remained cold. "I already told you. As long as you apologize to Jonathan, I'll pretend nothing happened.

"Besides, if you hadn't deliberately blocked the road at this exact moment, would this have even happened? If anything, you're the one blocking traffic on purpose!"

At this point, Josephine was still firmly on Jonathan's side, which I found pathetic and ridiculous.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the hearse in the distance, on the verge of plunging into the river. One of the groomsmen even had his camera pressed right up against Dad's face.

I was overwhelmed with humiliation, but all I could do was lower my head. "Okay. I'm sorry for getting in your way. It's all my fault. Now, can you make him stop doing that?"

Jonathan rolled down the car window, cupped a hand to his ear, and deliberately said, "What did you just say? Speak up, won't you? Why are you acting like a woman?"

I closed my eyes and yelled out an apology, then continued, "I've already apologized. Please stop this now!"

Jonathan pulled his phone from his pocket and pointed it at my face, recording me as he laughed brazenly. "I can do that, but I can't let the fact that you harassed my wife slide. If I did, wouldn't that mean anyone could just try to steal her away from me?"

I looked up, my eyes bloodshot. "What do you want?"

Jonathan waved his hand, and the groomsman beside me immediately understood and untied the ropes binding my wrists.

Then his infuriating voice rang out. "Tell you what. I want you to beg me for mercy. If I'm satisfied, I might let this go."

As soon as he said that, his groomsmen immediately surrounded me. Even if I didn't want to, they would still force me to do it.

My breathing was labored, and a metallic taste filled my mouth.

Josephine clicked her tongue, clearly annoyed. "All he wants is for you to beg him for mercy. Is that shred of dignity really worth it?"

Seeing that I didn't move, Jonathan edged the car forward. "If you don't want to, I won't force you. You'll have to call a search and recovery team to pull this car out of the river later!"

"No!" I would do anything for Dad, even if it meant giving up my dignity.

At the same time, a loud crash rang out. I looked up and saw Jonathan ram the hearse hard, sending it plunging into the river and splashing water everywhere.

With a smirk, Jonathan hopped out of the car and threw his hands up.

"I'm sorry. I accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake."

At that moment, rage consumed me, and I lost all sense of reason. I shoved the two groomsmen out of my way and lunged at Jonathan, wrapping my hands around his neck.

"I'm going to kill you!"

With that, someone struck the back of my head with an iron rod. My vision went black, and I collapsed to the ground. Warm blood trickled down my forehead, blurring my sight.

When I looked up, I saw Josephine toss the iron rod to the ground, her expression grave.

"If anything happens to Jonathan, I'll make you pay for this!"

Everyone crowded around Jonathan, making sure he was okay. In the chaos, someone even stepped on the back of my hand.

Just when I thought I might actually die there, the police sirens wailed in the distance.

Once everything was taken care of, I left the office and hurried over to Dad's funeral. I carried out his wishes when he was alive, opting for a small, private funeral instead of a large one. Aside from Dad's old friends, the family of the veteran soldier he had saved in the fire also came to the funeral. The military also sent a medal in recognition of his actions, and I simply offered them my thanks.Dad was already gone. There was no point in blaming anyone, as it didn't matter anymore. Staring at his portrait in the memorial hall, I felt my eyes sting with tears. At that moment, there was a sudden commotion at the door. I turned to see Jonathan walking into the memorial hall in flashy clothes, swaggering as he came in. Nexora Group's stocks had taken a hit, so he probably thought that with things going the way they were, I was on the verge of bankruptcy. Jonathan spoke arrogantly. "You should've surrendered to me earlier. Now you've lost your wife and suffered heavy losses.

Once Jonathan found out Nexora Group was really mine, he let out an exasperated laugh and immediately started smashing things."You're the reason my reputation is in ruins. Why should you get to walk away unscathed? You've made my life miserable. Don't think you're getting away with this easily!"Jonathan started throwing a tantrum in the company lobby. As the security guards closed in on him, he pulled a dagger from his pocket and waved it around wildly."Don't come any closer! You don't want to die here, do you? I've got nothing to lose! Anyone who comes here is dead meat!"Left with no other choice, Matthew came to get me and took me downstairs. When Jonathan saw me, he was still laughing like it was all just a joke."Sebastian, you've stopped being a coward, huh? I'm telling you—so what if you're the chairman of Nexora Group? I'll make you pay for what you've done to me. Just you wait!"Having been in business for years, I no longer cared about such empty threats and immedia

In the blink of an eye, Josephine's eyes filled with tears. "Sebastian, I know this is all my fault. You can hit me or yell at me all you want. "Please don't be mad at me anymore. There were so many people around earlier. If I'd admitted our relationship earlier, we would've become a laughingstock. "I only did this for you and Nexora Group. But I never expected Jonathan to treat you like that. I just didn't know what to do earlier."If I'd known you would get hurt or that your father's body would be desecrated, I never would've let Jonathan treat you like that."Josephine's voice had gone hoarse from screaming as she clung to the hem of my shirt. Still, I couldn't help but laugh at the irony. To protect her precious reputation, she had almost gotten me killed.I looked down into her tear-filled eyes and hurled the documents Matthew had handed me at her. "For the sake of your precious reputation, you chose not to take my side. Josephine, that day, you lied to me about being on

Josephine wanted to say more, but held back because there were so many people around. Earlier, she kept insisting she had nothing to do with me. There was no way she was going to say anything that would expose her. But the flicker of hesitation on her face made Jonathan realize something was off. He walked over and grabbed her arm, his gaze darting between her and me. "What do you mean? What's going on? Didn't you just say he has nothing to do with Nexora Group?"Josephine didn't answer. She avoided his gaze and looked away. The crowd watched us like it was a show. With Nexora Group's statement as proof, Josephine and Jonathan couldn't keep up their earlier bravado anymore.Jonathan's chest heaved. Finally, he looked at me and strode over, ready to beat me up."I get it now. I bet you must've pulled some dirty trick, haven't you? Otherwise, how could a major company like Nexora Group suddenly change its tune and have Josephine removed as chairwoman? "You'd better tell me the

When ten police officers hopped out of their cars and surrounded the area, Jonathan and his groomsmen gradually stopped hitting me. I clutched my head, lying weakly on the ground. Jonathan played the victim and whined. "Sir, this guy obstructed traffic and even deliberately provoked us. My friends couldn't stand it, so they beat him up. You've got to get justice for me!" With that, Jonathan raised a hand to the corner of his lips. "Do you see that? This guy beat me up and left a bruise on my cheek. I was supposed to marry the love of my life today, but he completely ruined it. I'm so upset!"Jonathan blamed everything on me, and his friends eagerly stepped forward to testify. "That's right. This bastard wasted so much of our time. He should rot in jail!" "Not only did he violate traffic laws and deliberately block the road, but he also harassed Jonathan's wife again and again. Jonathan has been generous enough to let it go, but this guy kept pushing his luck!" With that, the
