Chapter 95

last update Last Updated: 2025-05-18 02:25:19
Charley doesn't move from her spot, and her hands are shaking when I hand her a cup of coffee, but she manages to keep her voice steady as very slowly, she tells me about her troubled past.

As the words tumble from her mouth a picture is painted of a sad and tragic childhood, without love and support. "My family was a mess," she confesses, smiling to soften her statement. "My father was in and out of jail, and my mother had to do a lot of desperate things to keep me and my brothers fed. Drug deals, prostitution, it ain't easy for a poor black woman in NYC."

She grins, and I do my best to keep my expression neutral. Even though I've had my own tragedies, there is no way for me to truly relate to her experience. I'll never know what it is to be in her shoes. All I can do is listen compassionately as she shares what must have been some of the darkest moments of her life.

“When I was 11 I dropped out of school. I was in 6th grade, and because of my mom’s…activities, it became hard for me

  • Divorced But Desired by the Mafia King   Chapter 133

[Addison/Vanessa]“We don’t know anything for certain,” Reggie’s mouth says, but his eyes speak differently as he presses his hand to his ear. “Do we have confirmation?”I can’t hear what is said to him in response, but his face blanches and his expression looks lost, hollow as he replies. “Activate code gray. Yes. You heard me. Lock it down.” "I need to get you all back to headquarters. We'll keep an eye on the situation there," Reggie grimaces, his lips tightly pressed. "There are some protocols that need to be arranged in case there is a...transfer of power." A transfer of power. I don't bother to ask what he means. He needs to make sure that Black Eagle, whatever it is, continues even without it's commander. The ride back to Grant Tower is quiet as the three of us ride in mournful silence. Without confirmation, we can’t know if anyone survived the explosion. My heart goes out to all the families affected–that building was full of staff and security, along with Hunter’s adopted mo

[Addison/Vanessa]The explosion was followed by a string of curse words from the other side of the reinforced door. By some miracle the door is still standing. Thank God a thousand times over. For a moment at least we are still safe. "Whoever is behind this, it was an inside job," Ace grimaces, still holding his side. "They fucking took down half our staff and knew where all of our blindspots were, which means they've hacked our system somehow." Ace tries to smile at me reassuringly when he sees me watching him. "Don't worry, Mrs.," he nods back at the door. "Whoever was behind this doesn't know we just replaced those doors this week using a high-grade custom alloy. The usual methods won't work." "Get a roster of every person who entered this place today," Hunter orders, as he pulls out another gun from his waistband. I'm not sure how he managed to hide a third gun on his body without me noticing when he was holding me, but I'm grateful. "Somebody let them through the door. Don't gi

[The Spy] [20 minutes ago]My international reputation and connection with Hunter made it easy to secure my appointment. It was harder to distract the stylist so that I could make my way to the back gate and open the door under the guise of “needing some air.” I was followed, of course, but we were expecting that. The last time I was at Grant Group, I copied the security protocol for RoseThorn using their own computer systems. Said I needed it for my villa because I was feeling “unsafe with all the developments around the city” and because “Mr. Grant wants to make sure I stay safe.” Nobody questioned that either. They really should have. Mr. D will be thrilled. The men sent to guard me fall to the ground around me like discarded toys and I step forward to enter the outer gate key. 30 men wearing masks and wearing armor stamped with the Grant Group logo march through the door holding assault riffles. This time the armor isn’t fake–they were taken from a container ship delayed betw

[Addison/Vanessa]It's funny, the things we think of when we look back at our life and see the pivotal moments that changed everything. I've had so many in my life, you'd think I'd be better at noticing them. I should have just told him about the child. I should have said the rest of what was in my heart. I didn't realize I might not have another chance. I know that our life is not an easy one, or a simple one. Nothing about our world is safe. Every moment of happiness needs to be enjoyed to its fullest and savored as the treasure that it is. I should have held onto him tighter. Livy rushed up to us as Hunter set me down. "Did she say yes?" she asked hesitantly, her small face turned up to us both expectantly. "Yes, I did," I confirm, holding up my hand to show her my ring, a rock large enough to buy a small country. How am I going to walk around with something like this inconspicuously? I guess it's a good thing my fiance comes with a small army of personal guards. Livy jumps up

[Addison/Vanessa]It feels like an eternity has passed from the moment the words left my lips as I nervously wait for his reaction. At first he doesn’t say anything, but then he does something that surprises me. Kneeling before me again, he pulls out his ring one more time. “Vanessa Addison Vandersteele,” he begins, holding the ring aloft. “I am willing to slay any dragon and fight any beast by your side, as long as you let me stay next to you forever. Please, give me the chance to get to know you every day for the rest of my life. Marry me.”His dark blue eyes are soft with love yet sharp with determination. He means what he says–he’ll help me fight back. “Even if it puts your family in danger?” I ask. “Even if you or…” I can’t say the words, I wouldn’t want to curse poor Livy. I’d die to keep that little girl safe. “Do you trust me to keep you safe?” He asks, his jaw set. “I promise you that with all that I am that I will protect my family and keep them from harm…and that includ

[Hunter]“Then let me get to know you,” I request, holding her close. “I promise, there is nothing that you could say that would make me love you less.”“I wouldn’t be so sure of that,” she pulls away, turning her back to me as she looks over towards the skyline. The old Vandersteele Tower, once the tallest skyscraper in the city, gleams like a gem. Debrassy Corp owns it now. When the Vandersteele family was decimated, there was no one left to take over the family business–Debrassy was able to purchase it for almost nothing only to leave it empty, like a trophy. The lights are on, but nobody has been home for a very long time. “Your family was once close to the Vandersteeles, right?” she changes the subject, staring over at the tower as it blinks to us from across the city. “And the Debrassys…” “They were never part of our circle,” I think back to my childhood. “I remember when they came to New York,” I begin, “Debrassy’s grandfather, Damien, said that he was looking for his family l
