登入Samantha's POV.
Everyone in the locker room burst into wild and uncontrollable laughter. Everyone except Adrian. They must think that I have lost my mind for coming up with such a bet, and yes, I freaking was out of my mind. I held my breath longer than it took Adrian to answer. The teammates' laughter died down after a minute. I wasn't the only one anxious to hear Adrian's reply. Adrian drew in a long breath, hitched his shoulder and cocked his head. “No.” “What? You can't back out of a challenge.” He was about to leave, so I quickly blocked him from walking away. “Don't tell me the big bad Adrian Volkov is too chicken to compete with me.” He let out a sad scoff. “I only accept real challenges, not one from a wimp like you.” That shook more laughter from the guys around This encounter was my one chance to prove myself and let them stop treating me like some pushover. I can't let it slip “Come on, Adrian, take him on. It'll be fun.” Jimmy encouraged Adrian only cast him a sideways glance, and it silenced him. He sucked his teeth and closed the small gap between us. "Okay, Donovan, since you've made it your life's mission to beat me. I'll only accept your challenge when I see that you have what it takes to come after me. Right now, you aren't shit.” He nudged my shoulder with his, and so did the other guys as they filed out. I looked down at my trembling hands. I didn't even realise they were shaking the whole time. Fine, if that's what he wants. Then I'll make him see me. But first, I have to clean up that mess in the locker room. I grabbed some supplies from the cleaning closet and set to work. They were already practicing when I finished. I didn't need an interpreter to tell me how pissed the coach was at me. The day's practice was no different than the last time. In fact, it was worse. My back touched the ground more than ten times that morning. “On your feet, Donovan.” The coach kept yelling. My legs have never ached so badly in my entire life. Adrian circled me, an evil smirk on his face “It'll take a hundred years before you catch up to me.” He jeered. “That's it, practice is over.” The coach shouted. I didn't move from the ground. I felt utterly weak to the bones. “I'm sure you have classes, Donovan.” The coach shouted again. Then he was gone. I don't know how long I lay on the ground for. just enough to muster enough strength to walk at least. There were still classes to take aside from hockey practice, and I have to keep up with that. Gosh, it was going to be a lot. First, I need to take breakfast at the school's cafeteria. The second I stepped in, everyone became hushed. All eyes were on me. It was one thing to be the center of attention with my teammates, then another with a multitude of students. ‘Ignore them, Sammy. Act like they aren't there.’ I whispered to myself. I grabbed a tray and joined the moving queue nervously. Every table I moved to was either occupied or the occupants didn't want me in their midst. Automatically, I have become a loser because I dared to challenge the great Adrian Volkov. No worries, I was isolated from my family for a good six years. A bunch of high school students should have nothing on me My ass had barely touched the empty seat when a tall frame cast a shadow across from me "Zeke!" I almost squeaked. “What are you doing here?” He placed his tray gently on the table, an eyebrow raised at my question. “To eat, just like everyone else.” “Ohhh, I thought no one wanted to get associated with me.” He didn't respond, just began eating. I looked around us. Eyes were glancing at us, obviously. Including Adrian and his crew. “Will Adrian not get upset about you sitting with me?” He looked up from his meal, stopped chewing for a second and swallowed. “Adrian doesn't control what I do.” “But he's your cousin,” I started. “Yeah, cousins, not my dad or my elder brother.” The way he said it, like he's the only person Adrian can't control. “There's something different about you.” He pointed with the fork. My heart skipped a beat. “Me?” I let out a nervous giggle. “It's still the same old me, Samuel Donovan.” “I know your name. There's just something different. What's with the sudden interest in hockey and challenging Adrian? Do you have a desire to die?? I don't understand, does aspiring for greatness imply a desire for death?? “I won't sit back and allow myself to get bullied," I said stubbornly. He waved the fork again. “This right here is what I was talking about; everything about you is different now, especially the way you stand up for yourself.” Does this mean he suspects I am not Samuel? “It's good for you; keep it up.” He added. “Erm, thanks," I said awkwardly. After a moment of silence, I spoke. “I still have to make Adrian take up that challenge though.” Zeke finally dropped his fork on the tray, and it gave a clattering sound. He wiped his mouth with a napkin, very slowly. “Sorry to burst your rising bubble. I admire your newfound spirit, but that can never happen.” Why does everyone think that Adrian Volkov is unbeatable? I gripped the edge of the table so tightly that some particles scraped into my nails. That is why I am here, to prove them all wrong. “Zeke, I need your help to train harder and be someone Adrian can see as worthy of accepting his challenge.” He looked at me as though I were crazy. He may not be as good as Adrian, but he is good enough to help me stand on my feet.Samantha's POVAdrian took my hand in his. I have never felt so drawn to him like now. I do see his point and I understand it as well, but I am just very scared of what could happen“I'd like you to be my girlfriend, Samantha Donovan, and I am asking you officially.”Oh my goodness, my eyes teared up.“Really, Adrian? Does it have to be in this kind of place?”A smile curved up his beautiful lips“Okay, I'll ask you out on a proper date soon.”“I will love to be your girlfriend, Adrian. But first we have to make things right with Pete. We can't just leave him that way.”“I will try my best to do that. Now, let's get you something to eat at the cafeteria.”I didn't think that was a good idea. It would be better if I returned to the room to rest, and I told him so.“Come on now, are you still worried about what people will say?”"Yes, Adrian, you seem to have forgotten that I am a very sensitive person.”“And I said I won't let anyone talk trash to you or about you.”There was no arguin
Samantha's POV“There's no way you plan to stay in this room all by yourself.” I turned to the other side of the bed. That was exactly my plan for the day“Really? It's not like this is the most disastrous thing to have ever happened to you.”“Not helping Sharon. Can you just go on and leave me alone? I am allowed to stay in the room.”The dorm matron gave me permission to stay inside, just so I don't stress my feet walking from class to class“I know that, but if you stay here all by yourself, you'd start thinking a lot, and that can mess with your brain.”“It won't. Just go on to class, please. I need to rest. I will call you if I need anything.”“Alright, suit yourself.” And she was gone.I brought out my phone again and stared at the message I sent to Pete. He still hasn't responded, but it showed that he read it.This was the second day since we got back. He hasn't even called to check on me or anything.Adrian has dropped a lot of messages. I didn't bother to open them.I know
Pete's POVIn all my years, I have never felt like a fool before. Many times I acted like one, but it was just for fun. It hurts so much because I have never given out my heart to anyone before. Not the way I gave it to Sammy, and what did she do? She took it, threw it to the ground and stomped on it so hard that it stopped beating. Then there was Adrian, that no-good son of a gun. We were supposed to be best friends. Yet he stabbed me right in the chest.I should have seen it coming, or, should I say, I saw it coming. I kept telling myself that Sammy for sure loves me if we keep things up.She might finally be able to move on from Adrian and be fully invested in me.Who was I kidding? I let myself fall hard in love and get hurt in the process.I received her message while we were still on the bus. The intern service was much better now that we were away from the woods. It was a long message of apology and her hoping we could talk. To be frank, I don't think talking would solve anythi
Samantha's POV“You have to eat something, Sammy.” Sharon begged meI only turned my face to the other side of the tent. I wasn't feeling hungry.I heard that Pete got assigned some menial tasks for attacking Adrian like thatIt was all my fault. I pushed him to act that way. He has never been a violent person before. This was the first time I'd seen him react in so much anger, before we started dating when he thought I was a guy.He had never engaged in a fight. He was this sweet, loving person that got along with everybody.“Sammy, if you don't eat, how will you take your meds?”I wasn't even thinking about that right nowI sniffed and wiped a tear that dropped from my eyes“What are people saying about me?”“You can't be serious.” She hissed.“Of all the things you could think of to ask, you are really bothered about what people are thinking about you.”“It's just that they all witnessed it. And there were rumours before now. About toying with Pete and Adrian.”“And you just confir
Adrian's POVIt finally happened. I had the courage to finally tell Samantha that I love her, and she felt the same way about me as well.Right when I thought that I finally had her back, the realisation dawned on me when Pete walked in.She wasn't my girlfriend. I couldn't take her from Pete. It would be a very stingy thing to doI noticed the way Pete glared at me when I also offered to carry her down back to the clearing. His eyes clearly barked at me to stay the fuck away.My body still ached, but I wouldn't mind her weight on me, as long as she was safeI let him carry her. No word of objection came from me.When we got to the clearing, the head ranger put his hands on my shoulder.“You look like shit, Adrian. You should skip physical activities for the day. Get some rest.”“No, physical activities are what I need right now.”He looked at me strangely. Anybody in my shoes would jump at the opportunity for a good rest, but not me.I needed to keep myself from thinking about Samant
Samantha's POVI don't know if it was the kiss that made me sleep soundly or the fact that I slept against Adrian's chest as a pillow. It felt so good to have slept this way, and I didn't want it to end. My eyes were already open to the tweet if birds right outside the cabinDroplets of rain still fell from the ceiling, but it was already bright outside. I can't believe I just spent the night with Adrian. We didn't do more than kissing, but it felt absolutely wonderful.I just lay there, listening to the steady beat of his heart until he stirred in his sleep.“Are you awake?” He asked.I didn't answer. My eyes were already shut, pretending to still be asleep.“Of course you are. I know you, Donovan. I know when you're pretending.”I let out a chuckle. He caught me already. He tipped my chin up so that our eyes met“Can I kiss you again?”That was not supposed to be a question. My smile gave him the answer he wanted, and he dipped his head down for it.“They should be in the cabin.”My
Adrian's POV. I totally forgot the shit that went down between Donovan and Jim.Now he was back in school, I knew that Jim wouldn't let it slide. He'd rather break his other arm than let Donovan walk away happily.“Jim, let's go somewhere and talk.”He shrugged me off with his good hand. “No, she
Adrian's POV. “Are you for real?” I almost bit my tongue as I pushed more spots in the gym that evening.Zeke was assisting me right then when he told me about Donovan's request.I clenched my teeth hard as my biceps strained under the weight.“As real as it gets, I thought he was joking, but he w
Samantha's pov.No.He's bluffing, they wouldn't.Not while I was seated there.“Jenny, you don't mind, do you?” Adrian gruffed. What the fuck?It was the same blonde that screamed her throat out when I walked in on them. Now she's cool with this?I watched as she kissed his neck and bit the lobe o
Samantha's pov. This is it, finally I am going to play, I was already having the jitters.Adrian didn't spare me a glance when he entered the rink.Maybe he's still pissed that I wore his vest.It was time to go onto the rink and I tightened the hockey stick like my life depended on it.“Donovan!”
