Chapter 3

Auteur: Eternity
What are my choices?" Theodore suppressed the hatred in his heart and asked calmly.

"Don't play dumb. Ms. Vivienne gave you a choice—either rot in this dungeon for the rest of your life or get lost so that you won't defile the land of the Ashcrofts," Henry spat disdainfully.

Upon hearing this, Theodore finally recalled Vivienne's words before she left. If he wished to leave, she wouldn't stop him. In fact, she would even have the household servants escort him back to the Yardleys.

Sure enough, Emery added, "If you choose to leave, we will personally escort you back. However, the moment you step out of this place, you will no longer be the Ashcrofts' son-in-law."

Theodore's brows furrowed slightly. Having endured humiliation for thirteen years, he had naturally learned to be shrewd, not to mention that he had just gained sixty years of cultivation memories of a Lord from the Sword Orb.

An additional sixty years of experience was practically the same as living two lives.

After pondering for a moment, he immediately saw through their scheme.

"If I walk out of here now, the Yardleys will face extermination, won't they?" Theodore's expression darkened.

The two guards were momentarily stunned by his intelligence, but they quickly dismissed it. Since his energy core had been destroyed, no matter how intelligent he was, he was nothing more than trash now.

Emery sneered. "You're smart, but unfortunately, you were born in the wrong place. The fact that your family possesses a sword technique close to the immortal level has already spread across Philodorah. If you leave, the Yardleys will surely be wiped out. But if you stay, you'll have to spend the rest of your life in this dark dungeon groveling for scraps like a dog. At least the Yardleys can continue enjoying the Ashcrofts' protection this way and no other noble family would dare to touch them."

As soon as Emery finished speaking, Henry immediately chimed in, "Even if they don't act openly, the noble families have plenty of ways to make life unbearable for the Yardleys. From what I hear, Mr. Sebastian of the Boltons has already gone to the Yardleys to take your younger sister as his mistress!"

A murderous intent flashed through Theodore's eyes. "So, she had it all planned out. Even if I live, my life will be a living hell. What a wicked wretch!"

Destroying his cultivation wasn't enough for Vivienne. She had set up a perfect death trap for him.

The news that the Yardleys possessed the Seraphic Swordplay had undoubtedly been leaked by the Ashcrofts. Even if they did not spread the word, the powerful factions that knew the secret would still come after the Yardleys.

For thirteen years, the Ashcrofts had suppressed other forces to ensure Vivienne's path to immortality. They prevented others from harming the Yardleys, but things were different now.

The Ashcrofts had gotten what they wanted. Even if Theodore remained in the dungeon, they would no longer suppress the other noble families as they once did.

No matter what choice Theodore made, the Yardleys were doomed. He would be left to waste away in despair.

"What did you just say?"

The two guards' expressions changed instantly.

"I said—Vivienne is a wicked wretch!" Theodore glared at them coldly.

"You little bastard! How dare you? Do you think you're really the son-in-law of the Ashcrofts?"

They thought that their ears were playing tricks on them, but they were certain now of what Theodore said. Emery's face darkened as he swung his fist at Theodore's face.

As a second-class cultivator, he could easily kill an ordinary cultivator, let alone a mortal. He had intent to kill with his punch.

However, Theodore didn't dodge. He channeled his internal energy into his fist while raising his hand and met the punch head-on.

Boom!

A muffled explosion echoed through the air as their fists collided. It was like two boulders smashing together.

Crack!

A sickening crunch followed and a piercing scream filled the dungeon. It wasn't from Theodore.

In that exchange, the surge of internal energy from Theodore's fist shattered Emery's right arm. He was sent flying backward in an instant. He barely stayed conscious because of the pain while clutching his mangled limb.

Henry stood frozen in shock. If not for Emery's agonizing wails, he would have thought he was dreaming.

He stared at Theodore in disbelief. His energy core had been destroyed, and he had become a cripple. How was this possible?

"What a shame. She's wrong. The Yardleys' Seraphic Swordplay isn't just close to being immortal—it is an immortal technique. No, it has even surpassed your perspective of immortals."

Theodore released a chilling aura as he fixed his gaze on Henry.

"Po… Postnatal Realm!" Henry's mouth fell open in shock.

Emery, who was writhing in pain, felt the overwhelming pressure of Theodore's aura and was consumed by terror. He still couldn't comprehend what had just happened.

Despite his shock, Henry was a loyal guard of the Ashcrofts and a second-class cultivator. He believed that Vivienne did not lie to them. In fact, he was convinced that this was the effect of the Celestial Pill that Vivienne had given to Theodore.

Swoosh!

Henry drew his saber and channeled his internal energy into the blade. In a flash, he lunged forward to slash Theodore.

Forget a cripple like Theodore—even another second-class cultivator would find it impossible to block such an attack barehanded.

So, he was certain of his victory.

Clang!

The sound of metal grinding against something filled the air. Henry's eyes widened in terror at the sight before him. If he wasn't the one who was attacking Theodore, he would have thought he was dreaming.

It was a killing blow, and Theodore had caught the blade between two fingers. No matter how much force Henry exerted, the saber remained fixed in place.

Crack!

With a slight twist of his fingers, Theodore's terrifying strength snapped Henry's wrist.

The saber flipped into the air, and Theodore caught the hilt. Then, he took a step forward and swung the saber.

Slash!

A severed head tumbled to the ground while the lifeless body stood there with blood gushing out like a fountain.

"Why would Ms. Vivienne lie to us?" Emery, still clutching his broken arm, stared in utter horror as his comrade's lifeless body fell.

"She didn't lie to you, but she made a mistake. Not killing me outright was the biggest mistake of her life," Theodore said coldly while stepping toward him with the saber.

"Please… don't kill me! I'll do anything! I'll be your slave, just spare me! Please—"

"Did you show me mercy when you made me grovel on the ground for food like a dog? Did you show me mercy when you beat me just because you felt like it? Did you show me mercy when you wished for my death?"

Theodore's voice was devoid of emotion as his mind replayed the thirteen years of torment.

"You'll rot in—"

Realizing that there was no escape, Emery started to curse Theodore.

Slash!

Before he could finish, Theodore's blade came down. Only then did his hatred fade slightly.

"What's going on? You—"

The commotion had alerted the other guards. Several of them rushed over, only to freeze in horror at the sight of the bodies. Their eyes then shifted to Theodore, who was standing in the center with a saber in hand, like a demon incarnate.

"Theodore killed someone!"

A moment later, the guards snapped out of their daze and shouted in panic. One of them immediately bolted to report the incident.

"Your good days are over from this day onwards."

Theodore sneered and strode forward while slashing the guards as if they were melons.

An hour later, Theodore emerged from the Ashcroft Manor in the outskirts. He then gazed toward the distant city.

"Philodorah, I'm coming."

Behind him, the manor reeked of blood. The stench lingered for days.

Ten days later, when the Ashcrofts' servants arrived to deliver supplies, they found that everyone in the manor had gone to hell.

The skies over Philodorah were heavy and gray when rain began to fall. "Granduncle Clyde… Granduncle Carson...I don't want to marry him..." Amidst the rain, a young girl in a blue dress was kneeling inside the Yardleys' grand hall, tears streaming down her face. She had a graceful figure and her slightly chubby cheeks were adorned with two charming dimples, making her look irresistibly sweet. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying. She looked around desperately with tears in her eyes, pleading with those in the hall. At her side, two groups of people sat upright, facing each other with solemn expressions. On one side were the Boltons, who had come with a marriage proposal, while the other was made up of the Yardleys' elders."Marriage is not something a mere child like you can decide on. Since Mr. Sebastian has come to ask for your hand sincerely, you should accept him. The Boltons are one of Philodorah's three great noble families. They won't mistreat you."The one who

"You're the son-in-law of the Ashcrofts, not of the Yardleys! Get out of here and return to the Ashcrofts immediately!" Clyde, who had finally snapped back to his senses, roared furiously at Theodore. "The son-in-law of the Ashcrofts?" Theodore shot him a cold glance. "After thirteen years of sacrificing for the family, I'm nothing more than an outsider to you guys, huh?" The unfathomable gleam in his youthful eyes sent chills down Clyde's spine. It left him momentarily speechless even though he was an elder of the family. "Hahaha!" Sebastian burst into laughter. "Do you even realize what leaving the Ashcrofts means?" "I do." Theodore loosened his grip on Liliana and gently pushed her behind him. "Yet you still dare to show up?" Sebastian sneered. "It seems like you want to drag the Yardleys down with you!" "Drag them down with me?" A murderous glint flashed in Theodore's eyes as he stared at Sebastian coldly. "Why don't I kill you first before dragging them down

The grand hall was filled with the elders of the Yardleys.Clyde was at the front of the hall, presiding over the meeting. He knew exactly why the Ashcrofts had come. Given the current strength of the Yardleys, they had no choice but to submit. Even if Sebastian openly declared that he wanted to take Liliana as his mistress, they could only sacrifice her for the sake of the family. However, he hadn't expected the return of Theodore who had been the Ashcrofts' son-in-law for thirteen years! If not for the corpses strewn across the floor and the thick stench of blood lingering in the air, they would have thought they were dreaming. After a long silence, a wail of despair broke out. "They're dead… No… The Yardleys are done for! We're dead meat now!" It was Carson who spoke. His face turned pale as he stared at the lifeless bodies on the floor. The expressions of the other elders were just as grim. "If Liliana had become Sebastian's mistress, it could have bought us s

At this moment, Clyde finally came to his senses, his face darkening to an extreme. Theodore continued with a cold gaze, "I never figured it out back then. The fact that I possessed the Solarborn Physique was kept a strict secret within the family. Aside from Grandpa and my parents, no one else knew about it! And yet, when I was five years old, suddenly all of Philodorah knew!" "Nonsense!" Clyde shot to his feet and looked around at the others present. "Don't listen to this little brute! He's slandering me!" "Are you sure that I'm slandering you?" Theodore chuckled. "Then tell me, how do you know the words 'Seraphic Swordplay'? Did Grandpa tell you about it?" "Yes, yes! I heard it from Callum," Clyde quickly responded. "Callum told me about the sword technique." "Then, do you know why I married into the Ashcrofts? And why did I come back?" Theodore sneered. "Because… I brought the Seraphic Swordplay with me when I joined the Ashcrofts. Grandpa said that if I master it one

Theodore was seated where Clyde once was while holding his severed head which was still dripping blood.Meanwhile, Clyde's body lay lifeless in a pool of blood like the other corpses scattered across the hall. It was a shocking sight for the people present. Most of the Yardleys had hoped Theodore would stay with the Ashcrofts. That way, the other families in Philodorah would have some reservations about acting against them. Even if Theodore was crippled, he would remain the Ashcrofts' son-in-law as long as he was alive. The Yardleys and the Ashcrofts would still be tied together by their marriage alliance. However, no one had expected him to come home. Not only had he returned, but he had done so in the most dominant way possible. He had first killed Sebastian, who had come with a marriage proposal. Then, he exposed Clyde, the traitor who had leaked his family secrets all those years ago. The crowd stared at the young man before them and suddenly found him unfamiliar. H

Theodore stopped in his tracks after arriving at the patriarch's seclusion chamber. He was very concerned about his grandfather's safety. Thirteen years had passed, yet Theodore still vividly remembered his grandfather's words from back then. "Theodore, Grandpa has been in seclusion in the chamber all this time. I'm usually the one who brings him his meals," Liliana said. "But, I haven't seen him for the past two years." "For two years?" Theodore's heart sank. "How long has Grandpa been in seclusion?" "Three years," Liliana replied. "Three years ago, he suddenly announced that he was going into seclusion. After that, he handed over all the family affairs to Granduncle Clyde—" "Don't call him Granduncle. He doesn't deserve it," Theodore interrupted coldly. Liliana smiled bitterly and asked, "Theodore, how did you become so powerful all of a sudden? And Vivienne, is she..." "Don't mention that bitch's name!"Theodore couldn't suppress the lingering fear in his heart

Knock! Knock! Knock! The next morning, urgent knocks were heard at the door when Theodore was in the midst of a crucial moment in his cultivation.Liliana was startled awake. She hurried to open the door and saw Austin standing outside with an anxious expression."Where's your brother?" Austin asked. "Theodore is cultivating inside. Uncle Austin, what's—" Though Liliana was still young, seeing his grave expression sent a wave of unease through her. Austin rushed inside and said, "Hurry up! You guys need to leave immediately!" "Uncle Austin, what's going on?" Liliana chased after him and asked."There's no time for questions! It'll be too late if you don't leave now!" Austin entered the room and found Theodore seated cross-legged on the bed with his eyes closed. "Theodore—" Theodore's brows twitched slightly before he slowly opened his eyes. Austin found it hard to meet his eyes. Although he was only eighteen, his gaze belonged to someone who had experienced a g

Theodore almost burst into tears. He didn’t shed a single tear even when his energy core was crippled. However, his grandfather's words nearly broke his composure. Still, he forced himself to hold them back. "Innate Realm… Lord Callum has broken through to the Innate Realm." "The Yardleys finally have an Innate Grandmaster. No one will dare bully us anymore in Philodorah." "Our ancestors are watching over us!." Feeling Callum's powerful aura, the Yardleys finally let out a sigh of relief. They had been suffering under oppression for too long. The events of thirteen years ago were still fresh in their minds. They all believed that this time, the Yardleys wouldn't be able to escape a disaster like the one before. With the patriarch emerging from seclusion and breaking through to the Innate Realm, the Yardleys had hope now. "No way! He couldn't break through for so many years! How did he succeed?" One man's joy was another man's sorrow.Carson's face turned ashen,

Everyone was left stunned, especially Silas, who was still clinging to the cliffside. Watching Theodore leap into the lava, he had no idea what came over him, but in the next moment, he followed and jumped in too.The two cultivators from the Soaring Dragon Sect turned pale. They didn't dare jump after him and could only watch in horror as Silas plunged into the molten abyss, vanishing in the blink of an eye."What the hell are we supposed to do now? How do we explain this when we get back?" one of them asked, his face ashen."There's nothing to explain," someone said coldly. "We all say the same thing. He lost his footing and fell. End of story."Even Jeffrey hadn't expected the monk to be that reckless."Exactly. Both of them slipped. There's nothing we could do," added Hugh, the Dark Brotherhood disciple. The other three major sect representatives stayed silent. This wasn't exactly good news to them, but it wasn't bad news either. With Jeffrey and Hugh quickly slipping a few

Theodore surveyed the area and realized there was barely enough space to walk along the sides of the tunnel, but they would have to hug the wall. One misstep, and they would fall straight down. That unnatural red glow was clearly coming from the molten lava below, but this wasn't just any lava. No normal magma glowed like that."If I fall in there, I'll be incinerated instantly," Theodore muttered, his expression grim. Even with his body protected by sword force, he wouldn't last a second in that hellfire.Just then, he noticed something on the opposite wall. A figure in a black robe was already carefully inching along the narrow ledge, hugging the rock. The person had made it quite a distance already. Glancing across the gap, Theodore saw another tunnel on the far side."Well, aren't you sneaky," Theodore called out with a smirk."Cut the crap. If you don't want to die, stay back," the robed figure rasped. That voice belonged to Lynette.Naturally, Theodore didn't listen. He tu

As soon as Theodore stepped into the rift, his face was bathed in a strange red glow. Oddly enough, the light didn't spill out past the rift. It was like something was blocking it right at the entrance.Feeling the heat from that red glow, Theodore immediately knew there had to be an Exotic Flame inside. No ordinary fire could emit something this eerie. He had just taken a few steps when he heard footsteps behind him. Turning around, he saw Silas following close behind.Theodore shot him an annoyed glare. "You really don't care about dying, do you, kid?""I'm scared," Silas replied quietly, keeping his head down. "But since you had the guts to come in, I figured I should too.""I've barely got ten percent of my spiritual power left. I'm injured and barely hanging on. I've got enough to worry about without looking after you," Theodore muttered as he walked."No need to worry about me," Silas said with a smile. "You just do what you need to do, Senior. I won't hold you back.""I h

That said, Theodore wasn't lying either. If the Cinder Fiend really absorbed the Exotic Flame inside, it would definitely evolve into the Sunbane Fiend. When that happened, the entire Kingdom of Avelon could be reduced to ashes. It was just that the moment wouldn't come quite so soon."So, what do we do now?" Marie was completely at a loss."You stay here. I'll go in with the others," Theodore said. "They're planning to send people in, right? You should recommend me.""Why are you so set on going in?" Marie asked, curious."I want the treasure too," Theodore replied. "What if I'm the chosen one? Wouldn't that be my big break?"Marie rolled her eyes, but she chose to believe him.She immediately took Theodore to the main camp where the major factions were still debating over who to send into the rift.No one was willing to volunteer. After all, they had all seen the Cinder Fiend's power during the day. Against that thing, Energy Refinement Stage cultivators had no chance. They w

Inside the camp, cultivators from the various sects were puzzled by what they had just witnessed. They immediately dispatched several people to investigate. It didn't take long before a report came back."The fissure in the mountain has indeed begun to close, but there's still a gap wide enough to fit three people. There's a faint red glow coming from inside."The leading cultivators from each sect began discussing what to do next. Marie also went to eavesdrop on the meeting and didn't return for nearly an hour."They're planning to head into the mountain to investigate," Marie said when she came back."Idiots. They're throwing their lives away for treasure. If they run into that Cinder Fiend in there, they'll be reduced to ash."Hearing this, Theodore chuckled and said, "Do you know why the Cinder Fiend returned to the mountain after night fell?"Marie blinked, surprised. "You know why?"Theodore stepped out of the tent and pointed up at the moon. "Because of that.""The moon?

The Cinder Fiend was born from absorbing the fire of heaven and earth. If it managed to absorb the Exotic Flame within that fissure, it would evolve into something far more terrifying—a Sunbane Fiend. And once a Sunbane Fiend was unleashed, everything within a hundred miles would be scorched to ashes.Forget Azure Dragon Peak. If that thing emerged, the entire city of Philodorah could be reduced to cinders. The Yardleys wouldn't even need the Dark Brotherhood to wipe them out. This creature alone could do it."This Cinder Fiend seems to be under some kind of restriction. If we can figure out its weakness, we might be able to get inside that fissure," Theodore said, his eyes fixed on the mountain.Marie stared at him in disbelief. "Are you insane?! Didn't you see those cultivators just now? They were vaporized before they could even react!""I saw." Theodore nodded. "If things go south, we leave immediately. I'm not stupid enough to throw my life away."That reassured Marie a litt

From a distance, the entire mountain looked like it was ablaze. Strangely, though, a massive fissure had split the mountain open, and the blinding red light was pouring out from within that crack. The massive beast stood at the summit, letting out a series of thunderous roars. Even though they were over half a mile away, both Theodore and Marie could feel the sheer, overwhelming pressure in those cries.“A Cinder Fiend!”Theodore swallowed hard as he stared at the creature. “With that kind of aura, it's at least a Grade Three beast.”“Grade Three?”Marie’s face turned pale. “That’s basically on par with the Core Ascension Stage, isn’t it?”In the realm of cultivators, becoming an immortal meant ascending beyond the mundane. The growth in stages was Energy Refinement, Foundation Establishment, and Core Ascension.Once someone reached the Core Ascension Stage, they could control an Aetherblade and even kill an enemy a thousand miles away with a single slash. "Huh?" Theodore looked at her, puzzled. "You've come to Azure Dragon Peak so many times. Wasn't it all for this treasure? If you miss it now, wouldn't that be a huge waste?""To me, you are the greatest treasure," Marie said softly, her cheeks flushing red again.Theodore gave a wry smile. "Then, I'll go with you. I may be injured, but I can still hold my own. Besides, I've got someone watching over me in secret."Hearing that, Marie suddenly thought of the mysterious cultivator in black. That finally put her mind at ease. "Who was that person, anyway?""I told you. I inherited my ancestor's legacy. That person is its guardian. But unless things get really dire, she won't intervene," Theodore explained.Since Marie had shown enough goodwill, he figured it was only right to be a little more forthcoming. If they were going to keep working together, she deserved some peace of mind."Was that sword technique you used part of the legacy, too?" Marie asked."It was." Theodore nodded.

Marie's expression darkened. If it were the old Vivienne who had said such a thing, she would've brushed it off as immature nonsense. However, the Vivienne standing before her now was a completely different person. She had mastered the Primordial Technique, become the heir to a sect, and held significant influence within the Dark Brotherhood. If she truly rose to the position of sect leader one day, war between the Dark Brotherhood and the Kingdom of Avelon's royal family would be inevitable.Frankly, the royal family wouldn't have the upper hand. Sure, they controlled Heaven's Reach Academy, but if it came down to an all-out war, not every cultivator in the academy would necessarily side with the crown."Three years from now, maybe it'll be the Dark Brotherhood that's wiped off the map," Theodore replied in a steady voice. He was confident that in three years, he would be able to crush Vivienne and perhaps even the entire Dark Brotherhood. The cultivators from Dark Brotherhood fr
