Chapter 4

Caleb-

When I had climbed into my truck, one of my pack warriors, Lucas called. His voice was muffled as my focus had been on my rearview mirror, watching Sam. I barely heard what Lucas was saying until after I drove away and was on the main road.

“Wait, what did you say?” I asked Lucas once I could no longer see Sam from my rearview mirror.

“I said the rogue has been spotted.” I could hear the fear in his voice. “He was seen by your firm sir.”

“How long ago?” Internally I started to panic. My mind instantly went to Sam. The last I saw her she was getting into her car.

“About ten minutes ago, Sir.” I could hear in Lucas’s voice that he was expecting me to know what to do in this situation. Thinking of Sam, I started to feel a little uneasy. I had to find Sam and make sure she was safe.

I thought for a moment and then said to Lucas, “Have someone follow him. We can’t lose his trail; he has already slaughtered his previous pack and a fair share of humans.”

“Yes, sir.” With that, the phone call ended.

Remembering that Sam said she was going to a bar, I quickly turned the steering wheel to head in that direction. Another car honked at me, more than likely for cutting them off, but I ignored it as straightened out the car and sped down the road. Meanwhile, I tried Liam’s phone.

It rang a few times and then went to voicemail. I tried another two times but still couldn’t get through. I even tried contacting him through our pack link, but still got nothing. Not only as my brother, but as my Beta, he should know that if I am trying to contact him, I had a damn good reason. His infatuation with this human was becoming a real headache. It would be different if they were fated to one another.

I lost myself in thought as I drove to Mitches. From the moment I met Sam, I knew she was mine. I had done my best to ignore her because she was human. It wasn’t that I had a problem with humans, but I did have a problem with the fact that she was my fated mate.

Worse than that, she was innocent and wasn’t aware that all the stories about werewolves, vampires, and the like, were real. To willingly bring a human into my world, wasn’t something I was happy about. My intention was to keep my distance from her.

I had noticed she was my mate the first time I met her at the bar. Thinking I could keep my distance and never see her again, I hadn’t let it bother me then. When Liam called me this morning and I heard her voice and had to hang up. Then I saw that she worked at my law firm.

No matter what I did, I couldn’t escape her. Fate has made it clear that she was meant to be a part of my life. The only other solution I had, was to directly reject her. It had crossed my mind, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

Although I was annoyed that she was human, I couldn’t deny that I was attracted to her. Just seeing her and being near her, calmed my wolf and me. When I looked into her blue eyes, it felt like I was being swallowed by the calming waters of the ocean.

A smile spread across my face as I recalled seeing how there was a flicker of interest in her eyes when we had been standing in the hall of her house. I could see it written all over her face that she knew in the depth of her soul that she was mine, even if logically she didn’t understand it.

When I arrived at Mitch’s I pulled into the parking lot and scanned the cars to locate hers. I found it, but she wasn’t inside. I could only hope that she was inside the bar and safe.

Finding a place to park, down the block, I headed inside. In the back of the bar, covered in darkness, I found a table where I could watch over Sam without her spotting me. She had a beer in her hand, not any of those alcoholic juice boxes other women get.

A man was sitting by her, and I could feel the anger starting to pulse through my veins. This human better walk away before I make sure he can’t walk again. Even over the loud music, I leaned forward so I could hear what the guy was going to say.

“Hey, beautiful.” He said, which put me on edge even more.

“I am waiting for someone.” Sam yelled over the current MGK song that was playing.

I wasn’t sure if she really was waiting for someone, but at this point, I didn’t care as long as this drunken fool left her alone.

“I don’t see anyone.” The man mumbled, but I could still hear him with my enhanced wolf senses. “Maybe you are just saying that.” The man added, half smiling, and nearly falls over as he leaned closer to Sam.

“Look man, I am not interested.” She stated firmly and then focused on her beer.

“Whatever prude.” The man says angrily before shoving away from the bar and stumbling into the crowd of other drunken idiots.

Watching this pleased my wolf and seemed to simmer down my anger. Leaning back in my chair, I relaxed as I continued to watch her. Although I could only see her side profile, she looked beautiful. I was tempted to get up and approach her.

When her head turned and she started to look around the bar, I noticed she seemed a little tense. I didn’t know what she was looking for, so I slunk back to keep her from locating me. The last thing I wanted her to think was that I was following her, even though that is exactly what I did.

After what I counted to be her third beer she stood up and paid the bartender and left. Following her, I kept my distance, but I wanted to make sure she left safely. As she walked across the parking lot, I could sense fear coming from her.

Her head kept turning from side to side as she picked her pace. I watched as she pulled her purse to her chest, after a few moments of scrambling around in her purse, she pulled out her keys. Thinking I was spooking her, I stepped behind another parked vehicle and just watched her.

Her head snapped around when she reached her car. She scanned the area like she was looking for something, only to turn back to her car. I didn’t know why she seemed so spooked, but I doubted it was because of me.

“Calm down crackhead.” She muttered as she stumbled over her keys to get the correct key that would allow her access to her car.

I debated on stopping her because I didn’t like the idea of her driving after the few beers she had. Before I could make up my mind, she backed out of her parking spot and drove off. Wanting to make sure she got home safe; I ran over to where my truck was. My phone rang again as I was starting my truck.

“Anything yet?” I barked at Lucas after I answered the phone.

“Yes, sir he’s been spotted in the forest shortly after we spoke last.” I headed back to Sam’s house as I listened. “Blair has been following him, but we lost contact near a small house on the edge of the forest.”

Blair was one of the best warriors in the pack, she’s fought many battles and never lost a target. This was odd for her to lose one rogue.

“When?” Anger and panic filled my voice.

“Less than five minutes ago, Sir.” I could hear the fear in his voice.

“I’m headed there now, keep me updated.” I hung up and pressed my foot down on the accelerator until it was to the floor. I was only a couple of minutes away, but I couldn’t help thinking of Sam. She better have gone home because I swear if she didn’t… I let the thought fade out as I pulled up to her house and saw her car. She was still in it, so I started to scan the area for signs of a rogue.

I smelt him before I saw him. My gaze followed the direction of the rogue’s scent. Right outside of the forest stood the rogue looking directly at Sam as she exited the car. Jumping out of my truck, I ran towards her.

“Get Liam and tell him to get out here now!” I yelled at her, although it wasn’t my intention to scare her.

“How about you learn how to do your own dirty work, Boss.” She glared at me with venom in both her eyes and voice.

“Go get my brother, Runt. I don’t have time to be nice right now. There are more important things than your ego getting bruised.” I growled, my patience becoming nonexistent.

Instead of fearing me, I seemed to only have stirred up her annoyance. Her blue eyes burned into me as she stared me down. I had to admit she had a lot of guts to not back down against me.

Her mouth parted, but before she could say anything, her head jerked to the side to look over at the tree line. Following her gaze, I saw the rogue baring his teeth at us, and a low growl rumbled across the terrain.

"Go now!" I growled as my wolf stirred inside of me. “Get Liam. I will hold it off.”

Not waiting for her to argue with me, I took off running in the direction the rogue was. Instead of standing its ground, it took off running back into the forest. Just as I broke through the tree line, fur sprouted from my body as I began to shift into my large black wolf.
