Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie Moore
Soren said he was leaving, yet somehow his feet never moved an inch.

I was already barely holding myself together after losing my baby, and his little performance was the last thing I needed.

"What, you can't even afford a baby outfit?" I snapped. "You're so broke that you have to beg other people for one?"

Elara immediately stepped in front of him. "That's enough, Callum! Soren is sick. Why are you picking a fight with him? He saved my life once. Of course I'm going to help him. If it weren't for Soren, I wouldn't even be alive today."

I almost laughed.

Saved her life?

All Soren had done was pull her back when she'd been staring at her phone while crossing the street and nearly walked straight into a cyclist.

Apparently, that made him her savior.

But me? I'd given her my blood. I'd even donated a kidney to her. Somehow, none of that counted for anything.

To Elara, those were simply things I was supposed to do. Even our baby had been disposable.

It was almost laughable how obvious the difference was between loving someone and merely tolerating them.

And somehow, I'd spent all this time pretending I couldn't see it.

I didn't answer. I just stared at Elara, any warmth I'd once had for her long gone.

Soren, of course, couldn't resist making things worse.

"Callum, I'm dying anyway. I won't be around much longer to get in the way of your life with Elara. Please don't fight because of me..."

Right on cue, Elara turned on me. "Do you really have to upset him like this, Callum? My patience has limits. Keep this up, and I won't be so nice about it next time. Well? Apologize to Soren."

The whole thing suddenly felt exhausting.

I muttered a halfhearted apology, wanting nothing more than to get it over with.

Soren looked positively smug.

Elara's expression softened as well, apparently satisfied that I'd finally fallen in line.

"See? Was that so hard?" she said. "This is a win for everyone. Soren gets to live on through the babies, and you get a child without having to do anything. You should be happy."

I gave her a cold smile.

Happy?

She still had no idea only one baby was growing inside her. Ours had died during the embryo transfer.

Mistaking my smile for a sign that I'd finally come around, Elara reached over and gave my hand a reassuring pat. Her voice softened. "Alright. I know I haven't exactly been fair to you this time. But I'll make it up to you once the baby is born.

"I still owe you a birthday present, and we never took that honeymoon. We'll do both. I'll make sure you're happy. How does that sound?"

She spoke as though we still had a future together.

We didn't.

The moment she'd gone into that operating room, I'd filed my immigration papers. And just minutes ago, I'd received the approval.

In ten days, I'd be leaving the country for good.

I'd cut every remaining tie I had here, disappear from Elara's life, and make sure we never saw each other again.

With that thought, I started packing faster.

Before I left, I wanted to take my baby's things somewhere quiet and say a proper goodbye. It was the only funeral I could give the child I'd never gotten to meet.

When I kept my head down and ignored her, irritation flickered across Elara's face. Still, she managed to keep her temper in check.

"Callum, I'm hungry. Make some pasta for Soren and me. We've been so busy with the embryo transfer these past few days that we've barely eaten. We're exhausted."

I knew exactly what she was doing. This was Elara's idea of extending an olive branch.

She'd always been too proud to apologize properly. Even when she offered me a way out of an argument, she somehow managed to make it sound like an order.

In the past, I would have taken whatever peace offering she gave me without hesitation. I would've gone straight to the kitchen and made her whatever she wanted.

But not anymore. I didn't move. I simply kept packing away my baby's things as though she hadn't spoken at all.

Elara's patience finally snapped.

With one furious sweep of her arm, she knocked the box from my hands, sending everything I'd carefully packed scattering across the floor.

"Are you done with this little tantrum yet? You've been sulking since the moment we walked in. I've tried being nice, I've tried talking to you, and you're still acting like this. Enough is enough!"

Anger surged through me as I stared at my baby's belongings strewn across the floor.

"What, do you not have arms?" I shot back. "If you want pasta that badly, make it yourself."

I crouched down and started gathering everything up. But before I could, Soren stepped forward and started trampling all over them.

Dirty footprints covered the picture books, and toys cracked beneath his shoes. Then his foot came down on the small guardian angel charm I'd bought to watch over my baby.

It shattered beneath his heel.

I said, "I'm not Callum Vane. My name is Farrow Vane."Elara stared at me for a moment. Then, before I could stop her, she yanked up the hem of my shirt. Her eyes immediately landed on the scar at my waist and filled with tears. "No. You're Callum. You got that scar when you donated your kidney to me. You can change your name all you want, but you can't change that. So that's why I couldn't find you. You changed your name."Cal, you knew I was looking for you. You knew how badly I wanted to find you. How could you just disappear like that?"She was loud enough that people passing by had started to stop and stare. From the looks on their faces, most of them had already decided we were a couple in the middle of some messy breakup. Then Elara reached into her pocket. She pulled out a braided bracelet woven from several bright colors and placed it in my hand."Do you remember this? We made these when we first got together."I stared at the bracelet. "I threw this away.""I know."

My phone wouldn't stop buzzing the entire ride to the airport.Elara had called more times than I cared to count, and 99 unread messages were waiting for me."Cal, where are you going? Please, just tell me."I know I messed up. I'll do anything you want, anything at all. Just don't leave me."Where are you? I'll come to you. Please."I didn't answer a single one. Eventually, I'd had enough and switched my phone off.At the airport, I cleared security, made my way to the gate, and boarded my flight.By the time Elara came racing into the terminal, it was too late. My plane was already in the air."Cal! Why couldn't you just wait for me? How could you do this to me?" From up above, everything on the ground grew smaller. So did Elara, until finally, she disappeared from view. The moment my flight touched down in Mersya, I turned my phone back on. The screen immediately flooded with messages from Elara."Cal, where did you go? Please, just tell me where you are."Do you have a

Soren haughtily said, "You agreed to the procedure, remember? And now you want to act like none of this was your fault? Don't stand there pretending you were some devoted mother. If you cared that much, you would've protected your baby when it mattered."Cruel as it was, he wasn't entirely wrong. Elara didn't love our child or me nearly as much as she'd claimed.Maybe that was exactly why his words hit so hard. She threw herself at him, and within seconds, the two of them were fighting.I'd seen enough. Soren had been exposed, and I'd gotten the justice I'd come for. There was nothing left for me here. Besides, I was running out of time to get my paperwork sorted. I took a breath, turned around, and walked away. The moment Elara realized I was leaving, she broke free from Soren and hurried after me. By the time she caught up, she was breathless, her hair falling loose around her face.I'd always known Elara to be perfectly put together. I'd never seen her look this much of a mess

"Do you really hate me that much, Callum?" Soren choked out. "Fine. If you want me gone so badly, maybe everyone would be better off without me!"He suddenly lunged toward the wall, but Elara caught him before he could do anything."Soren, stop!" Her eyes were red as she held on to him. "I believe you, okay? You don't have to prove anything. Please, just don't do this."Then she rounded on me. "Is this what you wanted, Callum? Are you seriously not going to stop until you've destroyed him?"I didn't even raise my voice. "Interesting. All I suggested was another examination, and suddenly you're making a scene. You're awfully desperate to avoid those tests, Soren. Got something to hide?"The crowd was starting to have doubts of their own."Wait, he does seem awfully worked up over a simple test.""Exactly. If he's telling the truth, why not just get checked and shut everyone up?""You don't think he actually faked the whole thing, do you?"The mood shifted fast. Soon, the same p

As if on cue, Soren clutched his chest and let out a couple of weak coughs, looking every inch the fragile, dying man.The moment he brought up his cancer, Elara's anger crumbled. She pulled him into her arms, her fury replaced by concern. "Don't talk like that. You're not dying. I won't let you. I'm not angry anymore, okay? Just... take care of yourself. You promised you'd be here when our baby is born, and I'm holding you to that."Soren wrapped his arms around her in return. "I knew you'd forgive me."The two of them gazed at each other like I wasn't even in the room. And there I stood, watching them cling to each other after everything that had happened.I couldn't help but laugh at myself. So that was all our baby's life was worth to Elara? She knew exactly what Soren had done, and she'd forgiven him anyway. What was I supposed to be, then? Just another prop in whatever twisted game the two of them were playing?Still nestled in Elara's arms, Soren shot me a smug look. Th

I said, "No. Absolutely not."Elara stared at me, confusion flashing across her face. "What are you talking about? Who killed anyone?"I shot Soren a furious look and pointed straight at him. "Him. Soren knew exactly what would happen. He knew the embryo transfer meant we'd lose one baby to save the other, and he went through with it anyway. Our baby is dead because of him."For just a second, panic flickered across Soren's face. Then it was gone. His eyes reddened, and he bit his lip, slipping effortlessly back into the role of the innocent victim."Callum, I know you're grieving. You're angry, and I understand that. I really do. But that doesn't give you the right to accuse me of something like this."Elara immediately stepped between us, shielding Soren behind her. "He's right, Callum. If you're going to accuse him of killing someone, where's your proof? Because without proof, all you're doing is throwing around accusations."Behind her, Soren looked almost smug. He clearly th
