Mal looks at Ash and he smiles broadly,

“I think I might like her, a lot.” Ash laughs and nods back,

“Same here, let’s head in for a drink and see what we can learn about our mystery bouncer.” Mal groans,

“Oh, don’t go giving me ideas, I’m already struggling to control myself here.” Ash laughs again, clapping his brother on the back before making his way into the pub. The inside of the pub is a quintessential rural English pub, dark beams span the relatively low ceiling, they don’t need to stoop here, but there isn’t a huge amount of clearance above their heads either. There are various horse brasses hung up by the fireplace, where the fire is going gently.

It might not be that cold outside, but it is November and it takes the chill out of the room. The floor is wide oak planks that are remarkably flat considering the age of the place. There are a few scattered rugs that are a mix of patterns and designs, the chairs and tables are a mix of different vintages and styles, and there are booths along the left wall, and a small stage round the corner of the L-shaped bar.

Behind the bar is a large mirrored wall with bottles on shelves and optics hanging up in one large section with a counter underneath it with a selection of cocktail making equipment arranged neatly. Ash raises an eyebrow at this, most country pubs wouldn’t be making that many cocktails, but he shakes himself internally. It doesn’t matter, he takes another glance around the room, hoping to see the redhead, but no luck.

The walls are painted white, and lined with pictures, newspaper clippings and some artwork that he supposed could be some local painter, it was good work, but naïve. The walls are all but obscured with the amount of picture frames and stuff on the walls. He also noticed two ‘yard of ale’ glasses hanging on the wall. They look clean, like they’ve been used recently and cleaned afterwards.

Behind the bar is a tiny old lady, maybe four-four, and wiry, her cerulean eyes staring at him curiously. Her long white hair is in a plait down her back, a short nose, and thin lips completed the face, along with a myriad of wrinkles that told of her age. They walk over and she smiles at them,

“What can I get you two, darlin’s?” Her accent is broad and Scottish, he smiles warmly and looks at the back of the bar. He tilts his head, wishing they’d have the rare stuff he and his brother imported from the Dominican Republic, Mamajuana. But he hums and nods,

“Two whiskies on the rocks please.” She gives him an odd look but nods to go make the drinks. A few moments later and she returns with the glasses, and places them down on the bar. “Thanks.” He pulls out the money to pay, and she hands him the change.

“You’re welcome. Sit wherever you like, just not over there, that table is reserved for the man of the night.” She indicated a decorated table, with banners proclaiming ‘Happy Retirement Albert!’ and balloons and streamers. He nods and heads to the booth where Mal has already sat down and pulled out his phone.

“What are you looking for?” he asks, sliding the drink to his brother on one of the cardboard coasters on the table.

“I’m checking the review of the pub, and seeing if they have a website with employees listed.” Ash chuckles softly and takes a sip of his liquor. It’s incredible, maybe the best whisky he’s ever had. He nudges his brother and indicates the drink and takes another slower sip, savouring the taste as it warms his throat. Once Mal takes his own sip, Ash watches as he lets his eyes slide closed as he holds it in his mouth for a moment. He grins,

“I know right! How is this the best I’ve ever had, and nowhere near Scotland? I know she’s Scottish but still…” Mal frowns,

“The redhead wasn’t Scottish…” Ash chuckles,

“I know, Mal. I was referring to the older lady behind the bar.” Mal tilts his head at that, Ash grins, and Mal looks over to the bar, noticing the lady staring at them and lifts his glass to her, smiling. She grins back and continues serving the other people who have started to wander in. Including a small group that seems to include Albert. The old man and his wife, that’s a guess, are gently shepherded to the correct table and drinks and snacks are brought over.

Lots of people who had already been sitting in the pub went over and dropped off either a card or a gift before returning to their own tables. Ash stretches his hearing, seeing if he can hear their mystery woman. He can hear humming, and the gentle clinking of metal somewhere below them, like someone building something or maybe fixing something? It would make sense of the boiler suit she’d been in. He hears her muttering something then a louder clang of some tool or other being put down on a hard surface.

“I think she’s in the basement, I can hear someone down there working on something metal maybe with tools, I’m not certain though.” Mal nods and closes his eyes to listen too. There’s a soft huff, and someone dusting off their hands,

“Right, trial run one.” It’s definitely her, “Okay, so the fire’s lit, I just need to open the valve here, and check the gauge for pressure.” He had no idea what she could be working on, but she seems to know what she’s doing. He hears her tapping something, then “Huh, that’s not right.” He hears metal straining, then an exclamation of “Shit!” Followed by her shouting “FIRE IN THE HOLE!!”.

Eddie chuckles, and snaps his teeth at the nearest one, Guy Three, who full on faints. Eliza smirks at him,“Damn, Eddie. No, we’ll take them far away and dump them somewhere that Sansom won’t find, and let them live their lives free of this mess.” He smirks and she glares at the two conscious men, “But if I see any of your faces again, I won’t be so merciful. You got me?” The two nod enthusiastically. She looks back at Eddie, he nods,“I’ll sort it, boss.” She nods at him. “Where you off to now?” She sighs, closing the com so not everyone can hear her,“Back to their house. I promised them a sleepover.” Eddie smiles at her, and Kai and Ash seem more relaxed, but still on edge. She’s going to have to settle their nerves as much as her own. She goes over to them and takes their hands. “Are you two okay? I know this is a lot.” They look down at her, and Ash gives her a faint smile,“Yeah, we’re being framed for a crime we would never commit. Our lives are in danger, and the only one hel

Eliza smirks, and turns back to watch the three guys by the dock master. The three guys are asking for a specific container to be unloaded first. She opens the coms again,“That’s the container we want. Let them unload it, then we’ll move in.” There’s a quiet chorus of ‘Yes, Boss.’ She starts moving back from the edge. Then finds the ladder down to the ground. Ash and Kai are following her. She nods to them and slides down the ladder carefully. They follow her, more cautiously. She’s at the corner of the building by the time they catch up. The container is now on the crane, being lowered where the three are directing it.“Wait.” Ash and Kai stay behind her and flatten themselves to the wall, she watches the men and the container carefully. Once the container’s safely on the ground, they open it and disappear inside. “Now!” There was a flurry of movement, several of her people converging on the container quickly surrounding it. She and the twins make a bee line for the door. Opening it

“Hey, Boss.” Eddie’s here, which surprises her a little, but she’s glad he’s here nonetheless.“Eddie, I’m surprised you’re out here.” He smirks, but inclines his head,“If you want a job done…” She nods,“Fair.” She takes a deep breath then nods, “So, what have we got?” Eddie nods and taps at his tablet computer,“Ship’s about to pull in to the harbour, it’ll take a few minutes to dock properly for unloading.” Eddie shows her a tablet with a selection of video feeds. She nods and scans through them,“Any noise?” He shakes his head,“Nothing, no one seems off at the moment, we’ve been tracking bank records for the employees here, and found three possible people. But we can’t pin down where they are right now. They should be working tonight, but they either didn’t clock in, or aren’t here.” That isn’t good,“Did they get tipped off, somehow then? Or is it just not clocking in so there’s no proof they were here at all…” She’s mostly talking to herself, and is tapping her chin in thought

She smiles at Kai and nods. She picks up one of the throwing knives. She shows him how it works.“It’s fully flexible, and soft when it’s turned off.” She wafts it, and hands him the thing, he turns it over in his hands.“Feels like fabric almost.” She nods, then, holding it carefully, making sure not to cut Kai when she does, she turns it on. A small electrical current flows into the fabric and it becomes flat and rigid. Kai turns it over carefully, and tests the edge. “That’s a sharp knife.” She smiles,“They’re all like that. Virtually undetectable by touch, and perfectly safe when they’re turned off.” She carefully starts packing the bits back into their places. “Only I can turn these on, they’re coded to my fingerprints.” He nods, “But once they’re on I can give them to someone else, if needed.” He smirks at her,“You planning on letting us have a go, if needed?” She looks at him, she’s not put the swords away yet, and he’s more likely to know how to use one of those. She turns o

“His room is through there.” Kai comments when he sees where Eliza’s looking, “We have adjoining rooms. They are much the same, just mirror images of each other.” She nods, unwilling to trust her voice to not sound like a squeak. Is it warm in here, no? Just her then, perfect. She fans herself as discretely as possible, but she catches Kai smirking. She ignores him, and stops. He drops the chosen clothes beside her on the bed. She squirms a little, and he looks at her appraisingly. She scratches at her neck a little, feeling incredibly awkward. He tilts his head and strokes her cheek gently,“Baby? If you’re uncomfortable, I can change in the bathroom.” She studies him for a moment, then looks away and sighs,“It’s just not something I’m used to, all this attention and wanting me present for everything. I don’t mind it, I think? I just feel a little out of place.” He nods, and takes her hand.“I’m not taking off my underwear, you won’t see all of me. But I’d like to see your reaction

  • Her Eyes of Emerald and Fire   Chapter 45 – Eliza

Ash leads her to the kitchen after texting Kai to figure out what he’s up to. He’d dumped Seth in his room and locked the door, he could sit tight for now. She felt much better knowing he won’t keep pestering her. She can deal with him when she’s awake, but asleep? She has no chance of fending him off then. She just has to hope her nightmares would leave this little incident out. Kai’s in the kitchen when they get there and he smiles at her,“Hey, Baby. I’m just finishing up your food, give me a moment.” She smiles, and takes the seat offered to her by Ash. He sits next to her and she watches Kai cooking. He looks like a master in his element, there’s not a thing out of place. He seems to be making some sort of stir-fry. It smells amazing, she takes a deep breath in as he places the plate in front of her. Brandishing a fork. She disarms him, and smiles. He smiles down at her, then quickly cleans up after himself, leaving the kitchen sparkling clean. She takes her first mouthful and mo
