Chapter 2 – Asher

Mal looks at Ash and he smiles broadly,

“I think I might like her, a lot.” Ash laughs and nods back,

“Same here, let’s head in for a drink and see what we can learn about our mystery bouncer.” Mal groans,

“Oh, don’t go giving me ideas, I’m already struggling to control myself here.” Ash laughs again, clapping his brother on the back before making his way into the pub. The inside of the pub is a quintessential rural English pub, dark beams span the relatively low ceiling, they don’t need to stoop here, but there isn’t a huge amount of clearance above their heads either. There are various horse brasses hung up by the fireplace, where the fire is going gently.

It might not be that cold outside, but it is November and it takes the chill out of the room. The floor is wide oak planks that are remarkably flat considering the age of the place. There are a few scattered rugs that are a mix of patterns and designs, the chairs and tables are a mix of different vintages and styles, and there are booths along the left wall, and a small stage round the corner of the L-shaped bar.

Behind the bar is a large mirrored wall with bottles on shelves and optics hanging up in one large section with a counter underneath it with a selection of cocktail making equipment arranged neatly. Ash raises an eyebrow at this, most country pubs wouldn’t be making that many cocktails, but he shakes himself internally. It doesn’t matter, he takes another glance around the room, hoping to see the redhead, but no luck.

The walls are painted white, and lined with pictures, newspaper clippings and some artwork that he supposed could be some local painter, it was good work, but naïve. The walls are all but obscured with the amount of picture frames and stuff on the walls. He also noticed two ‘yard of ale’ glasses hanging on the wall. They look clean, like they’ve been used recently and cleaned afterwards.

Behind the bar is a tiny old lady, maybe four-four, and wiry, her cerulean eyes staring at him curiously. Her long white hair is in a plait down her back, a short nose, and thin lips completed the face, along with a myriad of wrinkles that told of her age. They walk over and she smiles at them,

“What can I get you two, darlin’s?” Her accent is broad and Scottish, he smiles warmly and looks at the back of the bar. He tilts his head, wishing they’d have the rare stuff he and his brother imported from the Dominican Republic, Mamajuana. But he hums and nods,

“Two whiskies on the rocks please.” She gives him an odd look but nods to go make the drinks. A few moments later and she returns with the glasses, and places them down on the bar. “Thanks.” He pulls out the money to pay, and she hands him the change.

“You’re welcome. Sit wherever you like, just not over there, that table is reserved for the man of the night.” She indicated a decorated table, with banners proclaiming ‘Happy Retirement Albert!’ and balloons and streamers. He nods and heads to the booth where Mal has already sat down and pulled out his phone.

“What are you looking for?” he asks, sliding the drink to his brother on one of the cardboard coasters on the table.

“I’m checking the review of the pub, and seeing if they have a website with employees listed.” Ash chuckles softly and takes a sip of his liquor. It’s incredible, maybe the best whisky he’s ever had. He nudges his brother and indicates the drink and takes another slower sip, savouring the taste as it warms his throat. Once Mal takes his own sip, Ash watches as he lets his eyes slide closed as he holds it in his mouth for a moment. He grins,

“I know right! How is this the best I’ve ever had, and nowhere near Scotland? I know she’s Scottish but still…” Mal frowns,

“The redhead wasn’t Scottish…” Ash chuckles,

“I know, Mal. I was referring to the older lady behind the bar.” Mal tilts his head at that, Ash grins, and Mal looks over to the bar, noticing the lady staring at them and lifts his glass to her, smiling. She grins back and continues serving the other people who have started to wander in. Including a small group that seems to include Albert. The old man and his wife, that’s a guess, are gently shepherded to the correct table and drinks and snacks are brought over.

Lots of people who had already been sitting in the pub went over and dropped off either a card or a gift before returning to their own tables. Ash stretches his hearing, seeing if he can hear their mystery woman. He can hear humming, and the gentle clinking of metal somewhere below them, like someone building something or maybe fixing something? It would make sense of the boiler suit she’d been in. He hears her muttering something then a louder clang of some tool or other being put down on a hard surface.

“I think she’s in the basement, I can hear someone down there working on something metal maybe with tools, I’m not certain though.” Mal nods and closes his eyes to listen too. There’s a soft huff, and someone dusting off their hands,

“Right, trial run one.” It’s definitely her, “Okay, so the fire’s lit, I just need to open the valve here, and check the gauge for pressure.” He had no idea what she could be working on, but she seems to know what she’s doing. He hears her tapping something, then “Huh, that’s not right.” He hears metal straining, then an exclamation of “Shit!” Followed by her shouting “FIRE IN THE HOLE!!”.

Eliza and Connor make their way back to the table, with two plates each and Eliza sits back down sighing deeply. Kai looks at her, and she tries to smile, but it’s unconvincing. He rests a hand on her hip, and leans in to her ear.“Baby, I can tell you’re not okay. I know that it’s a sad day, but something else is bothering you, I can feel it.” She nods,“I’m worried, this morning’s excitement has me on edge.” She rolls her shoulders, and shakes her head, “There’s nothing definitive, it’s just a feeling.” He nods, kissing her temple. Charlie looks at her, raising an eyebrow.“What happened this morning?” Eliza sighs,“I didn’t want you to worry, but I would have told you eventually.” She pushes the plate away from her, and gets up to come around to Charlie, she leans down and whispers in her ear. Kai doesn’t need to listen, and so scans the room for anyone that looks like they don’t belong. He can’t see anything off, and frowns. Ash puts a hand on his sho

Eliza smirks, and tilts her head at the vicar,“Not exactly, but I have knowledge of a lot of Gods from a lot of different pantheons. Call it a hobby.” He smiles, and nods, “I’m sorry, I really should go.” He nods and waves, ushering her to the door. She bows her head and leaves quickly, watching every shadow just in case it turns into Sansom. She climbs into the cab and sits between her men. Each of whom has a child in their lap. The driver looks unhappy about them not having seatbelts on, she huffs.“They’ve probably got better reaction times than your seatbelts, and we’re not going far. Just drive, please. We just had their father’s funeral.” He pales and nods, his loud, broad cockney accent filling the back of the cab.“Sorry, ma’am. It’s rules is all.” She nods, but ignores him, looking at her niece and nephew. Jessie’s almost asleep in Ash’s lap, but Danny’s now openly weeping, she rests a hand on his head. And he looks up at her, his eyes shining. Charlie

“Welcome all, I would like to thank you all for attending this service of remembrance for Benjamin Alden. He leaves behind his wife and two children, as well as you all. It was a sad day when I was informed of his passing, even though he had been ill for some time. I visited him in the hospital to give him communion and pray with him, and I was honoured to have been with him during that time.” Eliza does her best to keep a straight face and not look at Charlie. The vicar continues,“We begin with a prayer, then his sister-in-law Eliza is going to sing, um, ‘The Wellsong’.” He seems confused, but lots of the people present make quiet pleased noises, she takes a steadying breath, as he continues. “May God give to you and all whom you love his comfort and peace, his light and his joy, in this world and the next; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you, and remain with you today and forever. Amen.”It was a good prayer, a sol

Charlie is talking to the vicar and Serena and Connor are moving the flowers around as they’re apparently too close together. Eliza doesn’t care, this funeral is going to look exactly how Charlie wants it to, no matter what. The vicar gives a sigh of relief at Eliza’s approach.“Good afternoon, I’m Lawrence Pitfield, I’m the vicar here.” She shakes his hand firmly at his introduction. He’s an old white man, balding and clean-shaven. He has thick glasses, which made his round grey eyes look huge. He had a long thin nose that his glasses keep sliding down. And full lips that are curved in a warm smile, he seems nice enough.“Eliza, sister to Charlie.” He blinks, looking between the two of them, “And the blonde over there is our other sister, Serena.” He looks over at Serena and then back at them. With a confused look. “Adoptive, for want of a better term.” He finally smiles and nods, understanding. “Not that it should matter, after all, you’re all brothers and sisters in

Charlie starts by sectioning Eliza’s hair, and tying the main central part up in a bun to keep it out of the way. She does three tight plaits either side of her head, going from her temple to the back of her head, then down the full length of her hair threading small golden metal rings throughout the length of the plaits. It looks incredible with her dark auburn hair.Once these six small plaits, which are called Goddess braids according to Charlie, are done Charlie undoes the bun on the top of her head and starts working on a bigger braid, it’s still complicated looking. She divides the hair into two sections and begins weaving them together taking about half of the hair from the outside of the right section and crossing it over to the left section, placing it on the inside of the left section of hair. And repeating to the other side. She calls this a fishtail braid, and Ash can see why. Charlie threads more golden rings in as she goes, finishing the bottom of the bra

She closes the bedroom door and wanders over. He helps her out of her clothes, and she sits on the edge of the bed so he can start getting her pants and jumpsuit on, before rolling up the legs to do her boots. He gets her to stand up and pulls up the pants, and jumpsuit to her waist, then sits her back down again to sort out the bra. She has to help him as it’s a different style than her normal sort, but once the strap is around her neck she adjusts her breasts so they’re comfortable and he then takes the chain and clips it together in the middle of her back letting the excess dangle down her back. The way it rests across her back her phoenix tattoo almost looks like it’s perching on the chain. He clasps the halter neck of the jumpsuit at the back of her neck, and stands back to admire his woman. Gods, she looked fine. He bites his lip, and leans down to kiss her forehead.“You look incredible, Honey.” She smirks, and goes to her bag, pulling out a bag of make-u
